The Problem:

You are unable to open a Microsoft Access database hosted on another computer within your local network. Usually the following error shows:

This file is located outside your intranet or on an untrusted site. Microsoft access will not open this file due to potential security problems.
To open the file, copy it to your machine or an accessible network location.

In my case this error started because the machine that hosted the access database was switched to Vista

The Solution:

To solve the problem I had to do some research. After performing this fix on 4 other machines I feel pretty comfortable that this fix will work for you. If not leave a comment.

Steps:

Open Internet Explorer and click tools/internet options.

Click the ‘Security’ tab and select ‘Local Intranet’ in the ‘Select a zone…’ area.

Click the ’sites’ button below that section.

Un-check ‘Automatically detect intranet network’. Make sure other choices are checked.

Click ‘Advanced’

In the ‘Add this website to the zone:’ box, type in the following: “file://ACCESS_MACHINE_HERE” (where the machine that hosts the access db needs to be after the “//”) then click ‘add’.

So, there you have it. This may not be as much as a Vista issue as it is a Internet Explorer 7 issue. That I don’t know for sure. What I do know is that this worked for 4 machines (3 Vista and 1 XP). Let me know your results in the comments.

Normally connecting Windows XP to a wireless router is a pretty easy venture. However, I’ve stumbled upon this problem a couple of times and it can be very frustrating.

The Problem:

When this problem occurs the client machine will attempt to connect to the wireless router and fail. You see a popup that tells you, “Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network {name of wireless router}.”

The Solution:

This issue is almost always caused by the WPA Shared Key field on the router being left blank, or the data in the field is corrupt.

To fix this issue I logged into my router and made sure that I keyed in passphrase. I also went back in after saving just to make sure it stuck.

If your router already had a valid passphrase in place then you might be dealing with some sort of corruption. Try changed the security type from WPA to WEP. Then change it back to WPA and re-enter your passphrase. Lastly if that doesn’t fix the issue you might have to do a total reset on the router and re-enter your settings from scratch.

Good Luck,

Getting your old email messages into your new Vista box.

Outlook Express:

In Outlook Express, click Tools menu then click Options.

On the Maintenance tab, click Store Folder.

Remember the folder location.

Open Windows Explorer, and browse to the folder location in step #3.

Select and copy all the files in the folder to a USB thumbdrive or burn them to a disk.

Once you get the files on the Vista machine open the “Windows Mail” program.

Click File then click Import then click Messages.

Next choose the profile you want to apply the messages too. (or choose the bottom option).

Finally point to your thumbdrive or CDROM and choose the folder that holds your old emails. At this point “Windows Mail” will ask you which email folders you want to import (inbox, outbox, deleted, etc..). After you make your selection here you should be done.

It’s called the “Bellsouth Premium Internet Security Suite” and it’s touted as a guiding light in a world filled with evil (spyware) and more evil (viruses), but for almost $10.00 per month, this snake oil is digital.

What is it:

This suite contains a hat trick of protection.

Anti-Virus

Anti-Spyware

Firewall

Do I need to install this suite and give a review on each piece? No… what’s the point right? Look, Bellsouth is a phone company not a software shop. Would you trust Midas to do your taxes? So why not use trusted software from companies in the computer security business. Even if Bellsouth is just re-selling brand name vendors software, you can still come out cheaper buying it from the vendor (ie: Norton and Mcafee). Quality aside why would I need to pay for things that I can get for free (and work just as good if not better)

Free Alternatives:

Anti-Virus
There are two main players in the Free Anti-Virus market.

AVG (link)
Avast (link)

Anti-Spyware
The big one here is from Microsoft.

Microsoft Defender (link)

Firewall
These are plentiful

Microsoft built in firewall (included in XP Service Pack 2)
Kerio Personal Firewall (link)
Zone Alarm (link)

All in ones:
Now if you don’t want to fool with installing 3 different things you can try a suite from these shops. These are not free but they would still be cheaper than $10 per month.

Norton (link)
Mcaffee (link)

Bottom Line:
You would be better off upgrading your DSL speed package rather than paying for this “service”.

The Solution:
A couple of things could be causing this issue. In my case it was the fact that Internet Explorer was not the “default” web browser on the system even though it was the only web browser installed.

To make IE your default browser do this:

Click the “tools” menu at the top of Internet Explorer.

Then click “Internet Options” in the list.

Click on the “Programs” tab.

Look in the “Default web browser” section of the window.

If this section looks like this, then Internet Explorer is your default browser.

If you have firefox installed, a discrepency between IE and firefox could be causing the issue so see this post.

Someone smack me for not trying this earlier. In the past I have had to go through lengthy steps to make an audio cd to take with me in my car or play in my home.

Find the .mp3’s in my music cache and put them in a separate folder.

Use Cdex to decode the .mp3s back to .wav format.(Usually 15+minutes)

Finally use Nero to organize and burn the cd.

I will now put alway all those tools for one.. iTunes

The Problem:

Find an easier way to create an Audio CD.

The Solution:

1. Crank up iTunes and insert a blank “CD-R” in your drive(If you don’t have iTunes get it here.

2. Click “File” | “Create new playlist”

3. Name your playlist and then start dragging songs to it.

4. Click “Burn Disk” in the lower right hand corner of iTunes.

5. If you happened to grab more songs than will fit on a single disk don’t worry, iTunes asks you if you want to split the songs onto multiple disks.

6. Sit back and relax.

If you use iTunes as your music player of choice you can probably testify to one or more great features that it has to offer. However, Every yin has it’s yang, and for Apple it’s the fact that they “assume” that you will either rip a cd (that you own of course) or buy songs from the iTunes music store.

The problem is that most people already have a large collection of .mp3’s. So if want to add an album to an existing iTunes library the process is … well… harder than it should be. If you were to just drop the album in your normal music location the iTunes library and actual music in the collection cache (see definition above) do not match.

This tool however makes this process much easier.

It’s called the “iTunes Library Updater” and some of its features are:

Adding new music or video clips to the iTunes library.

Removing entries from the iTunes library that point to non-existing files.

Synchronizing the iTunes library with one or multiple directories.

Updating iTunes track information with meta information out of the media files.

Updating your iPod.

Usage:

The main window is pretty straight forward. The two main features I use the most are the ability to add new music to the library. The second feature I use is the “clean orphaned entires” feature.

Main Window

i_tunes updater (Main Page)

Update window

While Running

Overall I feel like theiTunes Library Updater greatly reduces the time spent trying to keep your music and iTunes library synced up and is definitely worth a look.

Download it here.

It appears that the client software has a bug feature that will broadcast networks you have trusted to anyone who is close enough to hear it. The kicker is that Microsoft hasn’t pushed this fix down through the normal “keep my computer up to date” channels. You have to actively seek this patch, download it and install it to fix your wireless client.

Steve Gibson from www.grc.com (link)

A completely patched, like right up to date, XP system that includes wireless will not have a client update to the Windows – it goes by various names, like Wireless Zero Configuration, WZC. But it will not have a really important update which all XP Service Pack 2 people will really want to incorporate. So it’s something that Microsoft – it turns out it was on October 17 of ’06, so only a few months ago, that Microsoft released this to fix a whole bunch of holes in this Wireless Zero Configuration. But they never put it on their list of stuff that you’d like to have automatically downloaded into your machine.

He goes on to say:
“If no infrastructure mode networks are present, wireless auto configuration sends probe requests out to try to connect to the first ad hoc wireless network in the preferred networks list. An observer could monitor these probe requests and establish an unsecured connection with a Windows wireless client.”

To fix the issue get this patch.
