I bought Borderlands simply because of the cover. I usually don't cover shop for games. I feel like I used to do that when I was young, and ended up finding either the best game, or the worst game I'd ever played. It was usually the latter. I decided to "cover buy" this time around though, mainly cos I'm sick and tired of the hype created around games. Hype can be a good thing for some games, the ones that are actually good, but I tend to stray away from hyped up games in this day'n'age. I'm sick of going to buy games that have been hyped up as the greatest thing of all time, and then they end up being a half-assed game with a title slapped onto it. For example: forum folks will sick the dick of Modern Warfare 2 for DAYS. Saying things like "this game has the best campaign of ALL TIME." Now, I love me some MW2 multiplayer, but I'm sorry... that game has no campaign to speak of. But before I get completely off topic... Borderlands was a game that I hadn't been exposed to on a gaming website. That I just bought completely off impulse, and ended up loving.

Borderlands is a FPS/RPG that takes place on a distant planet known as Pandora. Gearbox paired FPS action with class based characters, which include Hunter, Siren, Soilder, and Berserker. Each class takes to combat their own unique "action skill," while still being able to wield the plethora of guns available in the game.

Story:

Borderlands story seems interesting, but at times is a little hard to follow. But, what the game lacks in story it makes up for in the amount of quests available to the player. Aside from the main quest line, which I felt was a little short, there are a handful of side quests available, many of which can give you new gear or bag space, which can be crucial when yer trying to make money, and fun when you've finished the main quest line and are looking for more.

Graphics:

Borderlands graphics are cell-shaded. Cell shading is one of my favorite graphical styles, and is one of the many reasons I loved Crackdown back in the day. It just looks neat. In a cartoony sorta way. Canyons, desert walls, all of it looks very sharp, and the views from some of the cliffs can be pretty stunning. I have noticed some problems with texture pops, and it seems as if rendering takes a while, but it has never resulted in my 360 needing a reset or anything. Explosions and fire also look quite impressive in this game, but can sometimes make my 360 hiccup in framerate. Nevertheless, they look damn good.

Gameplay:

Gameplay in Borderlands feels smooth at almost all times. On foot combat can be approached with either a run'n'gun style, or with a strategic style. Most encounters pit you against five or six enemies, who are generally one or two levels higher than you. I felt that most of the time close quarters, run'n'gun combat was my style of play, and many others style of play as well. These encounters happen frequently, and generally without warning. You can be running along the arid badlands and all of the sudden start taking fire from an unknown location. This can be fun for awhile, but then just gets tedious as you start to get sidetracked from yer quest. While the on foot portion of Borderlands is smooth and fun, the driving is fucking horrendous. I haven't seen driving this bad since I first played Saints Row 2. You'll constantly be getting stuck behind small jut-outs or rocks in Pandora, and more often times than not, these obstacles won't just slow you down or knock you off track, they will fucking STOP you, and force you to back up and steer clear. Shitty driving doesn't really take away from the game though, it can just be an annoyance.

Online Play:

Borderlands features a Co-Op system that is as smooth as the gameplay. It's a "jump in - jump out" sorta system, where you can literally fire up the game, and jump into the first co-op party you see, picking up whatever quest the leader has on track, and spawning near them as well. I haven't experienced any lag in the co-op system either. Gearbox did a good job with the online in Borderlands, and I think that if you're going to buy the game, you should get a friend to buy it too.

Verdict:

All in all, Borderlands is an incredibly fun game. Save the poor story, minor graphic errors, and shitty driving mechanics. With loads of weapons, missions, and areas to explore, there's plenty of game here to get yer moneys worth. Gearbox has already begun support for the game with new DLC too, with promises of more on the way. That new DLC: "The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned," which features new enemies, and missions, is only 800MS points.
