Prep Fisherman to Fish in Fly Fishing World Championships

2011-03-05T10:31:00.000-08:00

One of our own will be competing in the IGFA World Inshore Flyfishing Championships, held in the Florida Keys this summer. Sam Hart, a senior at the Prep, qualified for the event by placing in the top two at the Tres Pescado Slam, an IGFA Championships qualifier event, held in Belize this past summer. To read more about Sam's great accomplishment and the IGFA Inshore Championships, check out the links below.

We wish Sam luck this summer and can't wait to hear about the championship event! Tight lines!

Untamed Tuna Fishing

2011-03-01T08:03:00.000-08:00

Captain Judd and Mr. Borgatti hooked up with a group of science filmmakers known as Untamed Science this summer. Many of you know Untamed Science from your freshmen biology textbook and the videos that support the curriculum. Our goal was to film actively feeding bluefin tuna and also catch, tag, and release one. Despite some great fishing leading up to the trip, we were blanked. We still managed to have a good time, despite the less than favorable conditions.

We're Back ...

2011-02-28T08:48:00.000-08:00

It has been way too long since we have updated the blog. The next couple posts will consist of memorable catches from the SJP Fishing Community since our absence from the blogosphere.

Go Fish Camp, Week 2 Day 2

2010-06-30T00:54:00.000-07:00

Another great day on the water; however, it started very slow. We began the day at one of our most productive fishing spots, only to find very difficult to find fish. In an effort to change our luck, we made the call to hit a pond that no one had ever fished before. Before long, we were into fish, including some nice bass.

Go Fish Camp, Week 2 - Day 1

2010-06-28T13:27:00.000-07:00

The second week of the St. John's Go Fish camp is underway and we have a great group. Today we hit three fishing holes and pulled some nice fish out of each one. Tomorrow we will be back at it bright and early. Here are some photos from the day:

Go Fish Camp, Day 4

2010-06-24T18:58:00.000-07:00

What a week! We had a great group of kids and from the start they were pretty fishy bunch with an average of over 70 fish a day! Despite my suggestion of just enjoying the time on the water and not worrying about how many fish they are catching, I have to admit I was pretty impressed when the kids were crunching the numbers. They definitely fished hard and earned their success on the water.

Trip Report: School's Out

2010-06-20T04:15:00.000-07:00

Several fishing club students met at the docks in Beverly to do a trip after the school year with Captain Judd. From the beginning, it had the makings of a great day with beautiful weather, not to mention a surface right off the docks. We started the trip out with diamond jigs and sabiki rigs and very quickly filled the bait well with live mackerel. Only a short trip later to one of the Captain's favorite fishing holes and we were into fish. The bite was hot and everyone had multiple fish in the boat within twenty minutes. The fish ranged from 26 -32 inches. All fish were released and 6 were tagged with American Littoral spaghetti tags.

Trip Report: Senior Trip

2010-06-02T11:46:00.000-07:00

Last week, the graduating members of the SJP Fishing Club were invited on the first charter of the season with Captain Judd of CJ's Charters. The plan was simple: catch mackerel for bait; rig on circle hooks; catch striped bass; tag fish; and release. The plan pretty much went off without a hitch and everyone had a great time. We tagged and released our first 4 striped bass of the 2010 season.

Memorial Day Weekend

2010-06-01T07:59:00.001-07:00

Memorial Day weekend always seems to be a great time to get on the water around here. Based on the reports that have come in already, this year is no exception. Several big fish were caught live-lining mackerel and there were also reports of a few nice fish caught on the fly as well. Here are a few of the pictures that came in this morning.

Sam has been pulling fish like this out of local ponds all spring long. Can't wait to see the pictures from his upcoming fly fishing exploits in Vermont and Belize!

Hot Flounder Bite

2010-05-26T07:18:00.000-07:00

The striper fishing has been pretty good on the North Shore, but there has been a lot of talk regarding the flounder bite. Captain Judd reported flounder up to 22" this past week. Chris V. also heard the positive reports and took a break from striper fishing and targeted flounder. From the looks of it, he was rewarded for his efforts!

"Salters" Restoration Project

2010-05-04T10:15:00.000-07:00

A great article ("Fish liberation: Historic trout stocking gets underway" by Mary Jo Shafer) on the project to restore sea-run trout to the Mill River... SJP Fishing Club is looking forward to helping in these efforts in the future.

Trip Report: 4/29/10 ~ Great Day!

2010-04-29T18:05:00.000-07:00

We had a great day on the water today, especially Chris M. and Sam who both had noteworthy catches. Sam's smallmouth was the first that has been caught on an SJP Fishing Club trip to the "Res". Not to be outdone, Chris landed by far the largest pickerel that has been caught out of the reservoir on one of our trips. Well done guys!
