Get more life out of your books! Learn techniques to do simple, effective repairs that will help keep your books looking better and circulating longer!

Learn how to do the following repairs:

- Clean and mend pages
- Tip in pages that have come out
- Repair a book that is falling out of its cover
- Mend/replace broken spines
- Repair broken or split sections of pages
- Corner repair
- Hinge tightening (textblocks loose from the covers)
- Hinge repair
- Bring one or two books from your library that need repair!
- Please bring an x-acto knife and ruler (steel ruler or wood with a metal edge)

Your daily interactions with customers are are the lifeblood of the library!

In this workshop, we will discuss five key principles of communication and how they relate to staff/patron interactions, and we will define customer service and the behaviors that boost it from good to exceptional.

In a variety of fun activities, participants will practice: handling difficult situations, using four practical steps for saying "no", active listening, and overcoming defensiveness. In addition to supporting individual service skills, we will discuss how managers can promote good service throughout the library by creating an institutional service attitude and ethic.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

- Describe good customer service
- Apply behaviors that ensure good service
- Apply strategies for coping with difficult situations
- Promote customer service to your staff <

07/31/08 Toastmasters Meeting

Would you like to be less nervous when called on to speak in front of a group?

Would you like to be able to organize your ideas and speak clearly and effectively?

Then you may be interested joining the SJRLC Chapter of Toastmasters International.

Since March, 2004, SJRLC has been hosting a new chapter of Toastmasters, a non-profit organization that develops public speaking and leadership skills through practice and feedback. Our new group has been meeting monthly for 90 minutes, 2:30-4:00 at the SJRLC office. Toastmasters is a great way to improve your communication and presentation skills, and manage your fears of public speaking.

Membership is open to anyone affiliated with an SJRLC member library, and SJRLC is picking up the tab for member fees, which cover the useful manuals each new member receives.

At Toastmasters, members learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment. Each meeting gives everyone an opportunity to practice:

* Conducting meetings. Meetings usually begin with a short business session, which helps members learn basic meeting procedures.

* Giving impromptu speeches. Members present one to two-minute impromptu speeches on assigned topics.

* Presenting prepared speeches. Three or more members present speeches based on projects from the Toastmasters International Communication and Leadership Program manuals. Projects cover such topics as speech organization, voice, language, gestures, and persuasion.

* Offering constructive evaluation. Every prepared speaker is assigned an evaluator who offers feedback.

SJRLC has always offered a variety of one-time programs on speaking and/or self-promotion, and we offer a substantial "train-the-trainer" program. The Toastmasters Chapter is a new model of continuing education for us. This model allows us to offer continuing support and practice in public speaking and presentation skills - skills that have become so integral to our jobs as librarians.

More secrets to keeping your books in circulating condition!

Learn the fundamentals of proper repair, and work with repair materials that will not harm your books. In this three-hour hands-on workshop we will cover:

* Determining grain
* Measuring and gluing techniques
* Tip-ins with Japanese paper
* Hinge repair
* Split textblocks and detached sections
* Spine repair

Participants are invited to bring 2-3 books that require the types of repairs listed above for evaluation and to solicit repair advice.
