Apart from the traditional services such as bill payments, mobile banking and top-ups, these mobile money services are venturing into the new areas of mobile credits and insurance. Shoaib Khan, CEO of SK Designer, says: "Mobile money services are gaining leadership in the MEA region.

"Though the demand for mobile money services continues to be exponential in Africa, in the Middle East, it is not so much developed as the banks' population is much higher here. But I think it's a matter of time that the Middle East will also catch up with this trend."

Mobile Money System (MMS)
To this end, Orga Systems launched the Mobile Money System (MMS) at Mobile World Congress in February. "For the Middle East market, we are adding the Mobile Money suite that enables telecom operators and financial institutions to offer advanced mobile financial and payment services.

Cost-effective solution

"As mobile phones represent a cost-effective solution mobile money transfer and payment services will bridge the gap for unbanked users to access financial services," Younan says. "These facts further underline the importance of real-time based mobile money solutions, and how operators can make huge revenue streams offering an alternative to the existing traditional payment systems.

"In today's mobile money services, there are limitations whereby you cannot do transactions, for example, beyond $100 or $200 depending on the country's regulator," says Younan. Apart from enabling operators to offer traditional services such as mobile payment, bill payment, airtime selling, cash-in and cash-out, money transfer, and prepaid top-ups, Orga's suite is stated to offer next generation mobile services providing the ability to do all these transactions, which integrates with the same platform that an operator is running.

Consumers

"We are not only giving mobile money services to consumers as credits on their mobile phones, but also enable them to bridge with banks thus allowing customers to move money from mobile credit, not limiting to $100 or $200, to save the additional money into a bank or finanical institution," he adds.

Younan says that Orga is currently working with operators to provide the traditional mobile money services within the credit limit assigned by regulators.

"We are also working with financial service providers that enable us to open a bank account on an operator's customer's behalf and certify the movement of money from their mobile to a bank and vice versa. This facility allows customers to bring the money back as mobile credit, if need be.

"We are currently working towards bringing the ‘next generation of mobile money services' into the region. These services are expected to be launched during the second quarter of this year in Africa."

Discarded Mobile Phones Create an Avalanche of Toxic E-Waste

Thousands of tons of electronic waste hit landfills each year as users upgrade to new mobile phones and discard the old ones.According to British newspaper The Independent, there are already 11,000 tons of unused cellular phones in the United Kingdom that have not yet been disposed of. Most of these phones will eventually be discarded, along with old laptops, portable music players and video game consoles. These electronic products are made with highly toxic metals and other chemicals that leach into the earth when discarded.

About 100 million people

According to Thomsen, about 100 million people upgrade to new phones each year in Europe alone, even though the average handset has a life of 5 years.

To encourage phone reuse, Green Mobile asks new customers to keep using their old handset and rewards them with a lower rate than can be offered by companies that subsidize new phones each year.

Recycled phones

The prevalence of recycled phones is expected to increase as the problem of e-waste enters the public consciousness and stricter regulations force more companies to tackle the problem. ABI Research estimates that these factors, in addition to shorter handset replacement cycles and a greater demand for cheaper phones will cause the recycled handset market to be worth $3 billion by 2012, with recycled phone shipments numbering above 100 million.

Using a cell phone regularly – even a modern one – raises the risk of developing a brain tumor for many users, a new Finnish study published online in the International Journal of Cancer. The study, done by a collection of researchers from many universities and led by Anna Lahkola of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority in Finland, found firm corollary evidence that using a cell phone causes the risk of getting a brain tumor called a glioma to rise by 40 to 270 percent on the side of the head preferred for using the phone.

There's a lot of debate today about the safety of using cell phones while driving. Statistics show that those who use cell phones while driving cause a much greater percentage of accidents than those who avoid using their cell phones. And the studies have shown that it's not just the physical coordination required to punch numbers into the cell phone while you're trying to work the vehicle that causes accidents; it's actually the lack of attention resulting from driving and talking on the cell phone at the same time. It seems that when you're distracted, you're more likely to cause accidents.

Banning mobile phones

So if we're going to go through the trouble of banning mobile phones in automobiles out of concern for driver safety, I think we should go all the way and just ban drivers with low cognitive function and slow reaction time. Why isn't reaction time one of the tests when you go get your license renewed? When someone sees a red light, shouldn't they be required to respond in one second or less? Isn't someone who takes longer than one second to respond to a red light and apply pressure to the brake pedal a danger to other drivers, and aren't slow people in fact far more dangerous than drivers who carry cell phones? I think they are. I mean, if we're going to get serious about driver safety and ban cell phones, we should ban anyone who's taking a great number of prescription drugs from driving.

Public safety

And in terms of real dangers to public safety, cell phones don't even come close to the dangers posed by prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs. Approximately 40% of all drivers are on at least one drug at all times, and if you include nicotine and caffeine, that number goes up to around 70%. The abuse of drugs is the root cause of the vast majority of automobile accidents.

Cell Phone Radiation Triggers Measurable Brain Cell Changes in Mere Minutes

As little as 10 minutes on a cell phone can trigger changes in brain cells linked to cell division and cancer, suggests a new study conducted by researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and published in the Biochemical Journal.

Previously, advocates of cell-phone safety have maintained that the phones cannot cause brain damage because the microwave radiation that they emit is at a level too low to heat the body's cells. But in the new study, changes in biological processes began at an energy level even lower than that used by a typical phone, even without heating occurring.

Safety guidelines

"Safety guidelines assume [that] health effects from mobiles can only occur when significant heating of body tissue occurs. [But] this study shows biological changes in response to low-level mobile phone radiation -- something that could potentially have implications for health," said Graham Philips of the British nonprofit Powerwatch.

Researchers exposed

Researchers exposed both human and rat cells to low-level radiation at a frequency of 875 megahertz, a similar frequency to that used by most cellular phones. The intensity of the radiation was far lower than that used by most phones, however.

Even so, within 10 minutes the scientists observed changes within the cells. A chemical switch regulating cell division was switched on -- a switch that has been linked to a variety of cancers.

There was no direct evidence of cancer inducement in the current study. However, the researchers point out that the changes occurring at the low radiation level were non-thermal in nature, something previously said to be impossible. Thus, the study challenges the entire basis on which cell phones' presumption of safety has been based.

Significance lies

"The significance lies in showing cells do react to cell-phone radiation in a non-thermal way," said co-author Rony Seger. "We used radiation power levels that were around one tenth of those produced by a normal mobile. The changes we observed were clearly not caused by heating."

"This helps explain why mobile phone radiation has been linked to increases in cancer tumors," said consumer health advocate Mike Adams. "Until now, skeptics have said the radiation wasn't intense enough to cause cells to overheat, but now we're learning there can be significant cellular changes taking place at far lower levels of exposure."

(NaturalNews) The United Kingdom's largest study on the safety of cellular phones has failed to rule out the possibility of long-term cancer risk, and concluded that parents should continue to limit use of cell phones by children over the age of seven and disallow it for younger children.

The Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research (MTHR) program was launched in 2001, with funding from the British government. The study found no evidence of a risk from short-term exposure among adults, but a "very slight hint" of increased risk among those who had been using mobile phones for more than 10 years. The data were at the "borderline of statistical significance," meaning that more research is required.

The reason for the inconclusiveness of the data may be that the study included very few such long-term users.

"We cannot rule out the possibility at this stage that cancer could appear in a few years' time," said study chair Lawrence Challis. "There is no way we can do that, both because the epidemiological evidence we have is not strong enough to rule it out and because most cancers cannot be detected until 10 years after whatever caused them. With smoking there was no link of any lung cancer until after 10 years."

Some cell-phone critics have accused the study of using selective data to make mobile phones appear safer.

"Normal use of a mobile phone for a couple of minutes may not cause any health effects, but what about calls of 20 minutes?" said Roger Coghill of Coghill Research Laboratories, which specializes in studying the health effects of radiation. "There are many omissions in this report, not least important work on children, and there are biological reasons why we should have concerns about children and old people."

The MTHR study did not conduct much research on children, both for ethical reasons and because of the presumption that research on adults could also be applied to children.
