I upgraded WordPress at Othermakes.net yesterday and started getting a server error when accessing the WordPress Dashboard. All the regular posts and pages were fine.

To fix this I opened up the file “error_log” in the root directory of the site. You can access that using an FTP client such as FileZilla or maybe the control panel of your host.

You should have some error messages giving you a clue as to what is failing. In my case it was a plugin called postie.

[02-Jan-2012 14:22:59] PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function _fill_user() in /blah/blah/othermakes.net/wp-content/plugins/postie/postie-functions.php on line 2618

To fix this I renamed the /wp-content/plugins/postie file to postie_old.

Now I could care less about postie so in hind sight I should have disabled that plugin and others I don’t use to avoid issues.

Update 1: picked up the SanDisk Extreme 16GB Class 10 at Best Buy. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I was stoked to unwrap a GoPro HD Hero 2 for Christmas this year. My wife went all out after I emailed it to her a few months back with little hope of getting one. She rocks.

So yesterday I strapped it to my helmet for a chilly night ride. Turned the GoPro on, hit the top button and it did not start recording. No happy beep and happy light. So I threw it in the truck and rode off with my friends undocumented.

After some googling turns out GoPros are very picky about what SD Card you use. The instructions say SDHC Class 4 recommended. Turns out my Kinston 4GB Class 2 was not gonna cut it. However, the Class 2 card worked fine in my house for a few 60 second test recordings.

The MTBR forums are saying the best sd card for a GoPro (non-Hero 2) is tough to nail down.

So I’m on the hunt now for the best SD Card for a Go Pro. Anyone have any insight? As always I will comment below with my findings.

If you have not noticed I’m a SOB. I’ve wanted a GoPro for a while now and I have found some good alternatives. Yes, my time is worth a lot less to me than the cash in my pocket.

Yes, I know I should just shell out the cash for a GoPro. I’ve invested more than $299.99 of my time researching GoPro DIY alternatives which could buy me a Hero2 with all the fix’ns.

So here is my list so far. Drop a comment if you have any bright ideas.

Lady L – Quick iPhone 4 vLog Solution

If you wear a full face helmet on your motorcycle or your willing to wear one on your bicycle look not further than this work of DIY camera mount genius. Yes, you may loose your teeth from iphone radiation but your gonna save $300 over a new GoPro Hero2 with fix’ns.

Ram Mount DIY Camera Mount

I don’t care where you want to mount your digital camera, iPhone or Camcorder. You can piece together a great solution by simply surfing RAM Mounts website. Wanna get extra cheap SOB points? Search Sears.com (yes, Sears has it) or Ebay.com for RAM accessories and find the stuff even cheaper.

This RAM X-Grip mount combined with an iPhone Otter case really has me intrigued.

More to come….

Motorcycles on prime time TV happens once every few years and usually involves big air, fireworks and lots of Redbull advertisements. The Smage Brothers out of Elkhorn, WI (right across the cheddar curtain from my house) are bringing something different to the masses on America’s Got Talent.

The Smage Brothers are masters of the trials discipline. This form of riding involves slow speed motorcycle handling skills and has not felt much love from Americans. It is the polar opposite of big air FMX that has captured the limelight over the last decade.

Last night Phil and Pat Smage took out hip hop favorite Snap Boogie to advance to the next stage. Be sure to tune into NBC next Tuesday and Wednesday at 9/8 central to show them some love and hope they continue to bring a new old discipline of motorcycle riding to the masses.

I’m not sure if I’m more surprised to see Trials bikes on prime time TV or that I’m watching AGT. Go Smage Bros!

My cousin and two friends rode the 2011 Ride For Research in Wabeno, WI last weekend. It is a two day dual sport ride organized by the Wisconsin Dual Sport Riders.

If you have the chance I recommend riding it. It was a great time. Or you can check out the Big Woods 200 this September. Same guys and gals run it.

Great discussion on ADVRider about the ride. I found some of the 2011 pictures there.

During the last week I have been riding every morning and cutting some new trails near by my house.

I am not the kind of guy who cleans my bike every ride. I just try to remove the dead weight and keep the drivetrain clean.

Rain or shine (there is not real trail to damage by riding in the rain) I have been out at 5 am riding and chopping. My ex8 came back pretty dirty one sloppy morning so I took the hose to it. The next day an annoying squeak / creaking noise started up. I assumed it was the seat.

Turns out it was the seatpost.

I cleaned and lightly greased the post and the creak was gone.

Here are some other possible sources of a creaking noise coming from your ex8..

The seat rails could need to be cleaned where they attach to your seatpost

The rear suspension bearings could have come loose.

Your spokes need to be tightened.

You ate too many beans last night

I recommend starting with cleaning and inspecting things that are easy for you to wrench on. The seatpost for example requires no tools to remove. Of course, if you don’t feel comfortable go to your local bike mechanic! I’m sure they will be happy to see you.
