Summer vacation 2010

5 September is Skandar's 19th birthday. He has been vacationing in Lebanon and enjoying eating the grapes and figs from the garden and generally relaxing before going to university. He took a day trip to the historic Roman ruins of Baalbec in the Bekaa Valley. Here he is in front of the huge iconic columns.

Puss and Boots

Miss Peri Puss and Mr Fil Boots or Puss and Boots are now five years old. They are brother and sister and are still devoted to each other. The diet seems to have worked a little better with Boots and he is now very slim whereas Puss is still a little round. I think this might be an understatement as the family is chortling in the background!

Sebastian Keynes the Giant Tortoise

Skandar is hoping to visit the Galapagos in the summer of 2010 to meet his friend Sebastian and other giant tortoises on Santa Cruz in the Galapagos Islands. He also hopes to see the sea lions, turtles and sharks under water.

Sebastian has a tracking device attached to his back which you can see on the picture.

Filming of Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Principal Photography has ended on the Gold Coast of Australia. Skandar has come away with a PADI certificate in scuba diving which he is hoping to put to good use in the future. The story of the film is of a sea journey on the Dawn Treader. The boat is even more magical than in the pictures posted by fans on the internet so wait till you see the film!

Skandar's father's book about Charles Darwin has been made into a feature film Creation. The DVD is now out and on sale at all the usual outlets. The film directed by Jon Amiel opened the Toronto Film Festival in 2009 and stars Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly as Charles and Emma Darwin.

Darwin's Treasure Chest and The Great Plant Hunt

It can't have escaped your notice that 2009 was the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth. As a great-great-great grandson of Charles Darwin Skandar presented Darwin's Treasure Chest to William Tyndale Primary School in Islington, London. The Great Plant Hunt is a project funded and devised by the Wellcome Trust and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to jump-start an interest in plant-based science by distributing a Treasure Chest to every maintained primary school in the UK.

On 11 March Skandar stood before the assembled school and read the first chapter of Following in Darwin's Footsteps. This is one of the booklets in the chest which also contains fun stickers, magnifiers, a plant identikit, a plant press and a mini seed bank. The children are invited to take part in a unique experiment which will help Kew's scientists at the Millenium Seed Bank. The project is supported by online resources.

Charles Darwin was only twenty-two years-old when he set out on his journey on HMS Beagle in 1831. The hope is that the Great Plant Hunt will inspire you too to set out on a life-altering path of caring for the natural world.

2010 has been declared the International Year of Biodiversity by the United Nations - the year that celebrates the diversity of life on earth including every plant, animal and micro-organism. In early 2010 a special Biodiversity webpage will be launched with a new Thinking Walk activity.
