लॉक-डाउन की सच्ची लघु-कथाएं : मैराथन हो सकती है जानलेवा

कोरोना का संकट सारी दुनिया को घेरे हुए है... हर देश, समाज, जमात और इंसान इस से अपने अपने तरीके से निपट रहा है... वास्तव में कोई इस संकट से सही मायनों में लड़ रहा है तो वो हैं हमारे डॉक्टर्स, सुरक्षाकर्मी (पुलिस), सफाई-कर्मी और रोज़मर्रा की ज़रूरतें आपको, हमको, सबको मुहैय्या कराने वाले हमारे फ़रिश्ते...

इन सब के अलावा तो सब अपनी अपनी लड़ाई लड़ रहे हैं... सबके अपने अपने दुःख हैं और उन से भी बढ़ कर अपने अपने दुखड़े... आज, 17 दिन के लॉक-डाउन के बाद, भारत का हर टीवी चैनल एक मेडिकल-साइंस चैनल है और पुराने, प्रतिष्ठित चैनल्स जैसे डिस्कवरी, नॅशनल जियोग्राफिक या बीबीसी अर्थ से काफी आगे निकल गया है. हमारे टीवी ऐंकर्स कोरोना के इतने बड़े विशेषज्ञ बन कर उभरे हैं जैसे हम सदियों से इस बीमारी से निपट रहे हैं... साथ ही, हमेशा की तरह, हर बिल्डिंग या सोसायटी में कम से कम एक बुज़ुर्ग टाइप के अंकल ज़रूर मिल जाएंगे जिन्होंने कोरोना को अपने सामने पैदा होते, खेलते और बड़े होते हुए देखा है और वो इस से अच्छी तरह से निपटना जानते हैं. उनके पास कोरोना के हर लक्षण के लिए कोई न कोई घरेलू नुस्खा होता है और उन्होंने अपनी जवानी से ले कर अब तक कई लोगों को इसी तरह के 'कोरोनामय' लक्षणों के लिए ठीक भी किया होता है... शुरूआती घबराहट के बाद अब लोगों ने धीरे धीरे कोरोना की विचलित कर देने वाली खबरों और लॉक-डाउन की बड़ी सच्चाई के साथ जीना सीख लिया है या कम से कम जीना सीखना शुरू तो कर ही दिया है.

इसी कड़ी में हमारे ध्यान-खेंचू (Attention-Seeking), स्वघोषित सेलेब्रिटीज़ ने सोशल-मीडिया का शोषण ज़ोर-शोर से शुरू कर दिया है. कोई झाड़ू लगा रहा है, कोई बर्तन धो रहा है, कोई खाना पका रहा है और हम सब 'फैंस' से उम्मीद लगा के बैठा है कि हम झट से उनकी Posts को Like या retweet करेंगे और उसके नीचे बड़े बड़े 'Wow' या 💖 के इमोजी से प्रतिक्रिया देंगे...इसके अलावा एक बहुत बड़ा तबका रोज़ाना अपने व्यायाम करते हुए वीडियो डालता है... आप एक बार तो सोचने को मजबूर ही हो जाते हैं की ये एक फिल्म या टीवी के कलाकार हैं या कोई Gym-Instructor? कई सेलेब्रिटीज़ अचानक से हम सब को योग सिखाने लगे हैं और शुरुआत ही सीधे, कठिनतम, बकासन से कर रहे हैं... कुछ का कहना है कि वो अपनी बिल्डिंग की छत पर ही जॉगिंग या ब्रिस्क-वॉक कर रहे हैं... ये सब देख सुन कर कभी कभी तो ऐसा लगने लगता है जैसे सिर्फ हम ही निठल्ले हैं और गुपचुप तरीके से इस लॉक-डाउन का मज़ा उठा रहे हैं, सिर्फ टीवी या इंटरनेट पर ही समय व्यतीत कर रहे हैं.... चूँकि प्रधानमंत्री जी ने कह भी दिया है कि घर पर बैठना ही आज के समय में सच्ची देश सेवा है, हम खुद को और घर वालों को तसल्ली देते नहीं थक रहे कि 'देश सेवा चल रही है....ये आलस नहीं है'.

.. तमाम सोशल-मीडिया पर बिखरे पड़े वीडियो और चित्रों को देखने और सुनने के बाद, अपराध बोध से ग्रस्त, मैंने भी अपने लिए 'उचित' गृह-कार्य ढूंढना शुरू किया...बर्तन मांजने, झाड़ू-पोंछा करने, पंखों की सफाई, घर के पर्दे बदलने इत्यादि जैसे महत्वपूर्ण कार्यों में से एक पर मैं लक्ष्य साधने को ही था कि पार्श्व में आवाज़ गूंजी..."चावल में तिलूले पड़ रहे हैं... इनको ज़रा धूप दिखाओ... ये कोरोना के चक्कर में सामान ला ला कर भर लिया है, अब कीड़े पड़ रहे हैं... कब तक संभाल के रखेंगे..." जो नहीं जानते, 'तिलूले' लम्बे समय तक बिना उपयोग किये गए चावल या अन्य अनाजों में पैदा हुए सबसे सामान्य कीड़े हैं जो 'बीटल' परिवार के कीट हैं मनुष्यों एवं जानवरों के लिए हानिकारक नहीं हैं. इनका अंग्रेजी नाम Weevil है... और जिनका आपके अनाज में होना इस बात का द्योतक है कि आपके अनाज में किसी हानिकारक कीटनाशक का प्रयोग नहीं किया गया है और गला फ़ाड़-फ़ाड़ के 'ऑर्गेनिक' चिल्लाने वाले आपके सुपरमार्केट ने आपको वास्तव में 'ऑर्गेनिक' उत्पाद दिया है (ये ज्ञान, गूगल पर उपलब्ध स्रोतों से प्रतुत है).

बहरहाल, लॉक-डाउन के चक्कर में दाल-चावल ज़्यादा ही स्टॉक कर लिया है. वैसे लॉक-डाउन की आड़ में ये बार-बार किराना ना लेने जाने की छोटी-मोटी कोशिश भी थी...घर में स्टॉक ज़्यादा पड़ा है और ये सोशल-मीडिआ वाले सेलेब्रिटीज़ खाने पर रोक लगाने पर तुले हुए हैं... अगर आप नियमित दिनचर्या का पालन नहीं कर रहे, तो सुबह-शाम नाश्ते में कटौती कीजिये...दिन के खाने में और रात के डिनर में एक-एक रोटी कम कर दीजिये... अगर व्यायाम नहीं कर कर रहे हैं तो चावल खाने पर कुछ दिन रोक लगाइये... अनाज का सेवन कम कीजिये, हरी सब्ज़ियां और फल ज़्यादा खाइये...अरे हुज़ूर, जो स्टॉक में है वो खाने नहीं दे रहे, जो खाने का सुझाव दे रहे हो वो न तो अब (17 -18 दिन बाद) स्टॉक में बचा है और (लॉक-डाउन के चलते) ना बाहर जाने दे रहे हो... ख़ैर, पार्श्व की वो आवाज़ अब आदेश में बदल चुकी थी..."धूप चली जाएगी...तब रखोगे क्या चावल धूप में?...प्रधानमंत्री जी ने घर में रहने को कहा है, ये नहीं कहा कोई काम नहीं करोगे!"

बे मन से उठते हुए मैंने चावल का डब्बा एक हाथ में उठाया और दूसरे में घर में उपलब्ध सबसे बड़ा थाल...और चल पड़ा धूप में तिलूलों का विनाश करने... बहुत दिनों बाद कोई काम हाथ में लिया था, लग रहा था हाथ में तलवार और ढाल है और आज दुनिया ही बदल दूंगा... घर की लगभग आधी बालकनी में अभी भी धूप बची थी पर वो भी निरंतर पीछे सरकती जा रही थी... मैंने डब्बे के चावल उड़ेले और धूप को पकड़ने की कोशिश करते हुए, थाल बची हुई तेज़ धूप में रख दिया...चूँकि आजकल समय की कोई कमी नहीं है, मैं वहीँ छाया में ये प्रयोग देखने बैठ गया की धूप में ये तिलूले चावल को कैसे छोड़ भागते हैं? 4-5 मिनिट में ही सफ़ेद-सफ़ेद चावल में ज़ीरे सामान एक्के-दुक्के तिलूले नज़र आने लगे...धूप में उनकी बेचैनी नज़र आ रही थी...मैं बैठा-बैठा उनकी अगली प्रतिक्रिया की प्रतीक्षा करने लगा...कुछ अति-उत्साहित, और संभवतः नयी-नयी बाइक खरीदे हुए, तिलूले सबसे पहले सरपट भागते हुए थाल की किनार पर इकट्ठा होने लगे...मेरी जिज्ञासा निरंतर बढ़ती जा रही थी... इतने में ही बाकी, थोड़े समझदार टाइप, संभवतः अधेड़ उम्र के तिलूले भी युवाओं के पीछे हो लिए...मैं अब थोड़ा हतप्रभ था...ये सब भाग क्यों रहे हैं? किस से भाग रहे हैं? भाग कर जाने कहाँ वाले हैं? इत्यादि इत्यादि प्रश्न मन में उठना स्वाभाविक थे...बस चावल थाल में निकाल कर धूप में रखे, कोई दवा नहीं डाली पर एक एक कर के सारे तिलूले चावल में से निकल कर भागे और....देखते ही देखते तिलूलों की पहली खेप थाल से कुछ दूर जा कर अचानक रुक गयी... कोई हरकत नहीं, कोई हलचल नहीं...धीरे-धीरे पीछे से आते हुए तिलूले भी रुकते जा रहे थे...मेरा आश्चर्यचकित होना स्वाभाविक था...नज़दीक से विश्लेषण करने पर ज्ञात हुआ, सब मर चुके थे!!.... पर कैसे? कुछ किया ही नहीं, कोई दवा नहीं डाली तो कैसे मरे?...मैं 15-20 मिनट ध्यान से देखता रहा तो समझ आया कि ये सब तिलूले असल में थकान से मरते गए... ज़िन्दगी भर बेचारे अपने छोटे से डब्बे या पैकेट के अंदर घूमते रहते, दौड़ते रहते....थोड़ी सी धूप लगते ही, किसी ज्ञानी तिलूले ने उकसाया होगा, "कुछ नहीं होगा...समय भी खूब है, जगह भी खूब है, करने को कुछ नहीं...चलो 'फिट' रहने के लिए दौड़ लगाते हैं....बस सब निकल पड़े मैराथन पर... जिन लोगों ने ज़िन्दगी भर 50 मीटर रेस भी नहीं दौड़ी थी, सीधे मैराथन पर निकल पड़े.... और क्या होता? रास्ते में थक कर मरना ही था.

मेरी जैसे आँखें ही खुल गयीं..... जब आपने ज़िन्दगी भर कोई कसरत, व्यायाम या योग नहीं किया है, तो इस लॉक-डाउन में कृपया अचानक से किसी सेलेब्रिटी को instagram या tiktok पर देख कर अनावश्यक अपराध-बोध से ग्रस्त होने से बचें... मन की हीन भावना को शरीर की लाचारी पर कदाचित हावी मत होने दें... कुछ ना समझ आये तो पलंग की चादर ठीक-ठाक कीजिये, रिमोट पर कब्ज़ा कीजिये, तकिया लगाइये, पैरों को लम्बा कीजिये ... और शुरू हो जाईये... इधर-उधर 2 -4 किलो बढ़ जाएंगे तो चलेगा... जान है तो जहान है...याद रखिये, आप इंसान हैं, तिलूले नहीं.

मुंबई से पुणे

"चैन से सोना है तो जाग जाइए" ....वैसे तो सोने की ऊपर-नीचे होती कीमतों ने चैन से सोना लगभग दूभर ही कर दिया है पर शनिवार 18 जुलाई 2015 की उस अलस्सुबह मैं लगभग साढ़े चार बजे जाग ही गया. पुणे में मेरी चचेरी बहन की लड़की, चिकि, की सगाई में जो शामिल होना था. संभवतः मेरी दीदी और जीजाजी पहली मर्तबा मुबई से पुणे जाते हुए, 'नीता वोल्वो' की अगल-बगल की सीटों पर लोनावला में ही मिले थे... और अपनी बड़ी बेटी का नाम उन्होंने 'चिकि' रख दिया (How Sweet... & Crunchy naa!!). बहरहाल, भान्जी की सगाई में शामिल होने के लिए मैं, गोपाल गौतम, सुबह 8.40 की 'उद्यान-एक्सप्रेस' पकड़ने मुंबई छत्रपति शिवाजी स्टेशन पहुँच गया.

ट्रेन में confirm टिकट मिल जाना अभी भी हम भारतीय लोगों के लिए किसी उपलब्धि से कम नहीं है. ट्रेन-कोच के बाहर चिपके, dot-matrix -printer के उस print -out में अपना नाम और उम्र दिखना सचमुच काफी सुकून देता है. लिस्ट में 'गोपाल गौतम, 24, पुरुष' देख कर मैं इत्मीनान से S-3 कोच में दाखिल हुआ और अपनी सीट 10 (Middle-Berth) पर जा कर बैठ गया... फिर यकायक मन में आया की देखूं तो इस सफ़र में मेरे हमसफ़र कौन कौन हैं. मैं उठा और कोच के बाहर लगी लिस्ट को ध्यान से पढ़ने लगा :

ख़ैर... गोपाल गौतम लिस्ट देख कर अपनी सीट पर आ कर बैठ गया और अपने सह-यात्रियों का इंतज़ार करने लगा. जैसे-जैसे गाड़ी चलने का समय नज़दीक आता गया, लोग आ कर बैठने लगे. गोपाल के सह-यात्री लगभग उसी क्रम में आये जिस क्रम में शायद वे दुनिया में आये होंगे. बलवंत शर्मा शायद कहीं विदेश से लौटे थे , वो अपने नए नए हासिल 'एक्सेंट' को अन्य यात्रियों के दिमाग में और वो २५-२५ किलो के दो बड़े-बड़े सूटकेस को बर्थ के नीचे जबरन घुसेड़ने की कोशिश कर रहे थे. फिर म्हात्रे मियाँ-बीवी पहुंचे. पहुँचते ही म्हात्रे साब ने मुझे टार्गेट किया - "आप अकेले हैं तो बर्थ एक्सचेंज कर लेंगे क्या?"... फिर उनको अचानक अहसास हुआ की बीवी की तो Lower बर्थ है, वो भी हाथ से जाएगी. तुरंत ही बीवी से मुख़ातिब हो बोले, "अरे आमने-सामने की तो हैं ही, तुम क्यों परेशां हो रही हो?"... गाड़ी लगभग चलने को ही थी की 'चिंटू' भागता हुआ आया... और सामने वाली बर्थ पर खिड़की की तरफ बैठ गया (जो श्रीमती म्हात्रे की थी) इधर उसके सामने वाली खिड़की पर मैंने कब्ज़ा कर रखा था (बर्थ हालाँकि शर्मा जी की थी पर उन्होंने एक दानवीर NRI की तरह उदारता का परिचय देते हुए मुझे दे दी थी)... किसी तरह एक बड़े से बेडौल बैग को घसीटते हुए, एक हाथ मैं टिकट निकाले, कंधे पर हैण्ड-बैग टाँगे और निरंतर "चिंटू.. चिंटू...... देखो भाग रहे हो न... बिलकुल नहीं सुन रहे हो न हमारी..." आदि कहते कहते चिंटू की मम्मी - ममता चतुर्वेदी का आगमन हुआ, उनके बिलकुल पीछे ही- मुस्कुराती हुई, एक हाथ में Bisleri की बोतल और दुसरे में एक बैग लिए वर्षा जी खड़ी थी. उन दोनों को देखते ही चिंटू बोला, "मौसी... खिड़की के पास मैं बैठूँगा!". सब मौसी की तरफ देख रहे थे. ममता जी की बहन और चिंटू की मौसी, वर्षा.

ट्रेन नियत समय पर चल पड़ी. श्रीमती म्हात्रे, जिनकी सीट पर चिंटू ने कब्ज़ा कर रखा था, बोल ही पड़ी, "आप लोगों की तो मिडिल और ऊपर की बर्थ है ना? ". मैं जैसे मौके का इंतज़ार ही कर रहा था... मैंने तपाक से कहा... "...हाँ... हाँ, इधर आ जाओ चिंटू... इस खिड़की पर बैठ जाओ.."....चिंटू बोला, " थैंक यू, भैय्या... मौसी तुम भी इधर आ जाओ ना". मैं मन ही मन बुदबुदाया, "थैंक यू, चिंटू!"... "हाँ ..... हाँ.... मौसी, आप भी इधर ही आ जाओ ना, जगह है इधर!". वर्षा झेंपते हुए बोली, "मैं चिंटू की मौसी हूँ!"...और वो उठ कर इधर मेरी बगल में चिंटू के पास आ कर बैठ गयी. इए बर्थ पर अब जगह थोड़ी कम पड़ रही थी, पर हम भारतियों को तो आभाव में जीने की जैसे आदत ही है - मैं, शर्मा जी और म्हात्रे जी अब भी मुस्कुरा रहे थे. म्हात्रे जी की धर्मपत्नी, सुधा, जो सामने ही बैठी थी, उनको म्हात्रे जी का वर्षा जी पर टकटकी लगाये मुस्कुराना शायद बर्दाश्त नहीं हुआ और १० बेचैनी भरे मिनिट के बाद वो फट पड़ी, "अरे ... सब लोग उधर ही बैठोगे क्या?... आप इस तरफ क्यों नहीं आ जाते?" म्हात्रे जी के पास कोई जवाब नहीं था, बेचारे उठ कर सामने वाली बर्थ पर जा बैठे. अपनी झेंप छुपाते हुए वो बोले, '' हाँ भाई चिंटू, तो तुम्हारा नाम क्या है?" चिंटू अपने रेट-रटाये लहजे में बोल पड़ा, "My name is Chinmay Chaturvedi... Father's name Mr Harish Chaturvedi... Mother's name Mrs Mamta Chaturvedi..." मेरे बगल में बैठे शर्मा जी जो अब तक Foreign-returned-sophistication का लबादा ओढ़े हुए थे अपने आप को रोक नहीं सके, "... और मौसी जी का नाम बेटा?"... और मैं अब तक सोच रहा था, इन ६ बर्थ में मुझे कोई competition ही नहीं है..."अरे अंकल, मौसी का नाम तो वर्षा दुबे है ना"... तभी चिंटू की मम्मी, ममता जी कूद पड़ीं, "हमारी वर्षा अभी बी.कॉम. III Year में पढ़ रही है, हमेशा से 1st Division आयी है, १-२ साल में इसकी भी शादी करनी ही है, हम लोग सरयूपारी ब्राह्मण हैं, ... वैसे आप लोग कहाँ के रहने वाले हैं, शर्मा जी?" मैं, गोपाल गौतम, जो अभी तक अपने आप को सबसे योग्य वर समझ रहा था, चुपचाप बैठा सबके मुँह देख रहा था... अपनी बीवी की घूरती नज़रों से बचते हुए म्हात्रे जी ध्यानाकर्षण प्रस्ताव लाये... "... वैसे ममता जी आप पहली बार ही पुणे जा रही हैं ना...  ये बहुत ही खूबसूरत रास्ता है... और हाँ रास्ते में कर्जत का वडा-पाव ज़रूर चाखियेगा"... शर्माजी ने भी ज़ोर से हाँ में हाँ मिलाई... ममता जी तुरंत बोली,"अरे वडा-पाव तो हमारे चिंटू का favorite है भाई... हाँ वर्षा को उतना पसंद नहीं है... वो इन लोगों के आजकल पिम्पल-विम्पल के बहुत लफड़े रहते हैं ना ". अपनी महत्ता और ज्ञान का परिचय देते हुए मैं, थोड़ा सा सीना चौड़ा करते हुए और वर्षा जी की तरफ देखता हुआ बोला - ये ट्रेन कर्जत रूकती ही नहीं है. सुपरफास्ट है! ... म्हात्रे जी की एक बार और कट गयी... उन्होंने बची-खुची इज्ज़त समेटते हुए ऐलान किया ... अच्छा, लोनावला का वडा-पाव भी ठीक है... चलो फिर सब लोनावला आने पर ही वडा-पाव खायेंगे...

बहरहाल, ट्रेन कोंकण-रेल्वे के अपने सफ़र पर आगे बढ़ती जा रही थी. अभी-अभी 'कल्याण जंक्शन' निकला था और सब पुणे जा रहे थे पर म्हात्रे जी पुणे से ज्यादा शायद लोनावला का इंतज़ार कर रहे थे ..."सुधा, लोनावला 10.30 तक आ जायेगा.." उनकी बेचैनी को ले कर उनकी धर्मपत्नी ज़्यादा बेचैन थीं. तीनों मर्दों की अवस्था लगभग एक जैसी ही थी - तीनों विश्व की तमाम समस्याओं को छोड़ वडा-पाव पर ध्यान लगाये हुए थे। सारी प्रतियोगिता इसी में थी की वर्षा जी को वडा-पाव कौन खिलायेगा। मुझे भी बेचैनी थी की लोनावला आज शायद किसी ने आगे खिसका दिया है.....आता ही नहीं दिख रहा!...

... तभी ट्रेन एक Tunnel में दाखिल हुई.... "भू s s s ....त ....." चिंटू चीखा...."चिंटू .... पागल हो क्या?...मैं डर गयी ना…" चीखती हुई वर्षा चिंटू से ही चिपक गयी .... मैंने भी चिंटू को समझाइश देते हुए कहा "...नहीं बेटा .... ऐसा नहीं करते ..." पर अन्दर ही अन्दर कोंकण रेल्वे की मुंबई-पुणे के बीच बनी 8 -10 tunnels में से अगली Tunnel का बेसब्री से इंतज़ार करने लगा...चिंटू भी शायद अगली Tunnel का इंतज़ार कर रहा था .... मैंने बात आगे बढाई ..."किस क्लास में पढ़ते हो भाई चिंटू ?" वर्षा जी ने दखल दिया "... 2nd में आ गया है…पर पढ़ता कहाँ है ये!..." मैंने भी एक क़दम आगे बढ़ाते हुए कहा "अरे...मौसीजी आप पढ़ाएंगी तो क्यूँ नहीं पढ़ेगा ?" चिंटू की मम्मी, ममता जी जो अब तक श्रीमती म्हात्रे से एकता कपूर के टीवी सीरिअल्स डिस्कस कर रही थीं, हमारी 'आपसी' परिचर्चा में कूद पड़ीं "... अरे ये बहुत बदमाश हो गया है… इस बेचारी की सुनता है क्या?"...वो दोबारा 'बालिका-वधु' में तल्लीन हो गयीं। हम लोग चिंटू के बहाने एक दूसरे को जानने में लग गए। "आप कहीं Job क्यूँ नहीं शुरू कर देतीं ?"...वर्षा जी बोलने लगीं "...मैं तो दीदी के कब से पीछे पड़ी हूँ ... पर ये बोलतीं हैं पहले शादी कर लो फिर जो जहाँ करना है, करना ..." बातों-बातों में अचानक घुप्प अँधेरा छा गया ... चिंटू चीखा "Tunnnnellllllllllll....." और वर्षा जी इस बार चिंटू की बजाय मेरी तरफ सिमट गयीं। मैं मन ही मन बोल रहा था "Thank you , Konkan Railway"... पर Tunnel उम्मीद से बहुत छोटी निकली ... वर्षा जी को पूरा डरने का मौका ही नहीं मिला, और ना ही मुझे संभालने का। फिर भी मैं माहौल कायम रखने के लिए बोले जा रहा थ… "रास्ते में अभी कई और Tunnels हैं ....और कुछ तो बहुत लम्बी और अँधेरी हैं…" शर्मा और म्हात्रे जी धीरे-धीरे कमोबेश ये स्वीकार करने लगे थे की वर्षा जी मुझ से दुनिया की समस्याओं पर चर्चा करने में तल्लीन हैं। ममता और सुधा जी भी उनको एकता कपूर के साथ बाँधे हुए थीं। ट्रेन धडधडाते हुए आगे बढ़ती जा रही थी - सब अपने अपने इंतज़ार में मशगूल थे - पुणे का शायद सभी कम ही इंतज़ार कर रहे थे। मैंने बात आगे बढ़ाई, "... पुणे जाने का सारा मज़ा रास्ते का ही है .... कर्जत का वड़ा-पाव, लोनावला की चिक्की ...."

वर्षा जी ने सफ़ाई दी ,"… पर मुझे मीठा ज़्यादा पसंद नहीं है", चिंटू ने भी हाँ में हाँ मिलाई, "मीठा ज़्यादा खाने से दांत में कीड़ा लग जाता है ना, मौसी?"… मैं भी कहाँ चूकने वाला था,मैंने भी जोड़ दिया "हाँ, हाँ.… मीठा खाने से मोटे भी होते हैं".... म्हात्रे जी से मेरा ज्ञान (और उस से ज़्यादा, मेरी बढ़ती नज़दीकी) शायद बर्दाश्त नहीं हो रहा था. वो फिर कूद पड़े, "अरे भाई, मोटे तो आप नमकीन या तला हुआ खा कर भी हो सकते हैं …मीठा बेवजह बदनाम है". श्रीमती म्हात्रे ने भवें तानते हुए मराठी में कुछ बुदबुदाया और झिड़क के बोलीं, "आप अपने आप को देखिये, हवा भो खाते हैं तो मोटे हो जाते हैं.…" इसके पहले की ममता जी और वर्षा उनके पेट (तोंद) की तरफ देखती, म्हात्रे जी ने साँस खींचते हुए पेट अंदर लिया और दलील दी "अरे भाई, हमारा पेट तो Genetic है…हमारे पिताजी और दादाजी के भी पेट निकले हुए थे". मुझे थोड़ा मौका मिल गया. ये भांपते हुए की म्हात्रे जी को Competition से हटाने का ये एक मौका है, मैंने भी व्यंग्य किया "सर, उम्र के साथ भी पेट बाहर आ ही जाता है". हमारी संस्कृति में पत्नी को आखिर धर्म-पत्नी यूँ ही नहीं कहा जाता, श्रीमती म्हात्रे ने पत्नी-धर्म निभाते हुए संभाला, "हाँ, ये ठीक कह रहे हैं, इनका थोड़ा पेट तो हमारी शादी में ही निकला हुआ था.… ये इनके परिवार में ही है". वर्षा जी की हंसी फूट पड़ी. हम तीनों मर्दों का साथ में हंसना स्वाभाविक था. शर्मा जी जो अब तक सब सुन रहे थे, ज़्यादा ही ज़ोर से हंस पड़े और उन्होंने भी एक झटका दिया "पर भाई, अमेरिका में लोग बहुत Conscious हैं, आपको बहुत काम लोगों की तोंद दिखेगी". फिर उनको शायद अपनी भी तोंद का अहसास हुआ,"अरे भाई, पर वो भी कोई खाना है क्या....बस उबला हुआ,ना तेल ना मसाले....मरीज़ों का खाना होता है वहाँ". सब ने सांत्वना देते हुए हाँ में हाँ मिलायी।

तभी ट्रेन लोनावला पहुँच गयी. श्रीमती म्हात्रे को अनदेखा करते हुए, म्हात्रे जी ने ऐलान किया "वडा-पाव कौन कौन खायेगा?". चूँकि शर्मा जी ये मौका चूक गए थे,उन्होंने मेरी अधीरता को सहारा दिया "अरे भाई म्हात्रे जी, अब आप कहाँ जाएंगे.... ट्रेन यहां ज़्यादा रूकती नहीं है…ये जवां लोगों को जाने दीजिये…ये लो भाई गौतम, 12 वडा-पाव ले आओ" मैंने व्यंग्य करते हुए वर्षा जी को छेड़ा "अच्छा, चिंटू और मौसी के लिए एक-एक…हाँ भाई मौसी का पिम्पल-विम्पल का भी चक्कर है" तीर निशाने की तरफ बढ़ चला था…वर्षा जी झेंपते-मुस्कुराते हुए बोलीं "नहीं ऐसी कोई बात नहीं है… बस अभी ज़्यादा भूख नहीं है." मैंने भी ज़्यादा वक़्त ना बर्बाद करते हुए, स्टेशन पर एक वडा-पाव वाले का रुख किया … 3-4 मिनिट में मैं गरम-गरम वडा-पाव के साथ वापस ट्रेन में था. ममता जी ने सबको एक-एक वडा-पाव बाँटा…इस बीच वर्षा जी, मौका देख कर, अपने मोबाइल से चिपक गयीं....शर्मा जी ने अनौपचारिक होने की कोशिश की "… अरे वर्षा जी, लीजिये…ठन्डे हो जाएंगे…गोपाल बहुत बढ़िया वडा-पाव लाये हैं" मुझे लगा जैसे मैंने Olympic में मेडल जीत लिया, थोड़ी विनयशीलता (Modesty) दिखाते हुए मैंने छेड़ा "अरे अंकल,हम तो जो मिल रहे थे वही लाए हैं पर वर्षा जी को फुर्सत कहाँ है अपने मोबाइल से!!". ममता जी ने भी कटाक्ष किया "आजकल दिनभर बस मोबाइल से ही चिपकी रहती है...वही सब Facebook, Whatsapp वगैरह दिन भर.…" म्हात्रे जी की जिज्ञासा फिर जागी "अरे वर्षा जी, आप Whatsapp पर हैं क्या?… ज़रा हमको Add कीजिये....हमारा नंबर है 9243XXXXX6.... आपका नंबर बोलिए?" वर्षा जी अभी तक ढंग से झिझक भी नहीं पायीं थीं कि चिंटू तपाक से बोल पड़ा "अच्छा मौसी का नंबर?.... मौसी का नंबर है 9857xxxxx8" मैंने, शर्मा जी और म्हात्रे जी ने फ़टाफ़ट वर्षा जी को Add किया और मन ही मन चिंटू के प्रति 'धन्यवाद प्रस्ताव' पारित किया। उतावलेपन में म्हात्रे जी मेरे 'मन की बात' कह गए "चलो अच्छा है, वर्षा जी से Whatsapp पर भी जुड़े रहेंगे …ऐसे ही तो दोस्ती हो जाती है". सुनते ही श्रीमती म्हात्रे ने म्हात्रे जी को घूरा और म्हात्रे जी चिंटू को छेड़ने लगे.

मैंने फ़टाफ़ट यार-दोस्तों के पुराने Messages से कुछ शेर-शायरी खंगालना शुरू किया और वर्षा जी की Whatsapp Profile की तरफ़ 'भागा'… उनका Status Message था "With 3 Jokers in Train...Romantic Weather,Missing u my love (Rohan)"........की.… ई ई ई ई ई …च च च.… की आवाज़ करते हुए ट्रेन अचानक ही रुकने लगी. मैं, शर्मा जी और म्हात्रे जी एक साथ बोल पड़े "अरे, शायद किसी ने चेन खींच दी है!!!" वर्षा जी की दीदी, ममता जी ने टोका "अरे भाई, पुणे आ गया है, ट्रेन स्टेशन पहुंच रही है"

मन मसोस कर मैंने अपने आप को दिलासा दी "अच्छा हुआ, समय से पुणे आ गया"

हम नाक-मुँह सिकोडें उसके पहले ह़ी

सब के नज़दीक से निकल जाते हैं

नज़र भले ही ना आये, पर

एक 'छाप' छोड़ जाते हैं

दिन-भर झांकते रहते हैं, और

दो-चार बार बाहर भी आते हैं -

उपस्तिथि फिर दर्ज़ करवा जाते हैं

साल भर खूब तड़पाते हैं, पर
सर्दियों में थोड़े 'ठन्डे' पड़ जाते हैं

जिनको सर्दी-झुकाम है, शायद

उन पर अल्लाह का करम है

अन्यथा हर-इक की नाक-में-दम है

पर मिश्रा जी को इनकी कहां पड़ी है

जहां-तहां सुराख हैं और

एलास्टिक भी अब सड़ी है

बेचारे अब बस टखनों से लिपटे रहते हैं

रगड़ते-घिसटते हुए कितनी ज़िल्लत सहते हैं

Women-Oppression & Reasons : My Take

Of late, I have been getting a lot many mailers, emails & SMSs reminding me about the declining Male-Female ratio in our country. A lot many invites for seminars & webinars are also pouring in after a study widely published recently. Many page-3 celebrities are busy covering the front pages of reputed publications, urging us to 'Think' about it & 'act now'. We Indians are particularly blessed with an Analytical & Argumentative mind. We may not perform (act) in most of the situations but we dissect & analyze it better than anybody else in the whole world. Having bombarded with statements & questions like "Save the Girl-Child" or "How are you going to contribute towards improving Sex-Ratio in our Country?" or the more incisive ones like "Will you marry your boy to a boy?"... or "Shut Sonography centres"... I am forced to ponder on the burning issue of our skewed Sex-Ratio and the probable reasons behind it. For sure our mindset to blame. Pretty recently a High-Court in India suggested castration of Rape accused. I would like to suggest a step further - get their sexes changed altogether!

Anyway these are some of the suggested solutions, more importantly we need to look at the reasons behind such a mindset - of oppression, suppression, deprivation of Women in Indian society, in particular. Men have been suppressing women folk since time immemorial but as we have become more educated, advanced & sophisticated - it has only increased. In one way or other, we are still continuing with it - Sometimes directly, mostly under the garb of various other reasons. Since, I cannot blame myself, I'll blame the SYSTEM for it. System is actually aiding to our psychology of oppressing women, on getting a chance (or creating one). I just want to ask why : -

~ Why do system has to give 30% reservation to Women in competitive exams when I was always ready to let them cheat from my answer-sheet?
~ Why does Indian Railways need to have separate coupe for Ladies, when we were always ready to offer them our own Seats & Berths? (Subject to certain conditions of Age & Looks)
~ Why does a 'Ladies Special' local train timed exactly at the time when you are already getting late to reach the office? (and very well know that Boss won't say a word to the ladies on getting late!)

Actually, I often feel, it is Men which are continued to be discriminated against - like here's an insignificant example, there are Men selling Lingerie but no sales-women selling men's undergarments.

But I don't advocate that men are not to be blamed, and I (on behalf of men, who agree to it) own this responsibility. Since I don't want it to sound more like a 'movement', I leave all other men & would like to introspect personally ..... Why, at times I (if at all I do) behave against the Women? After a lot many thoughts coupled with my limited ability to find a logic to various worldly issues, I could zero-in on some of the reasons. I still believe that to an extent, females themselves have also been instrumental in inviting this oppression & suppression against Women. By 'females' I mean including females of other species too. Deeds of 'other' females have also been reason for our (Men's) attitude towards Women folk. Like, how many of you have been bitten or have heard of being stung by a 'Madhu-Makkha'???... remember it's always a 'Madhu-Makkhi' that stings!

Having said that, I hereby conclude that the single biggest reason for my attitude against Women is nothing but a 'Machchar' (Mosquito) ... the same Machchar that not only gives me many a sleepless nights but has also been responsible for infusing me with Malaria, at least twice. But how come that justifies my angst against Females... wait, yet again, it's only the Female Anopheles Mosquitoes that feed on blood & therefore transmit Malaria, (poor) Male mosquitoes primarily feed on plant nectar...

बीवी तभी दिलासा देती है
"अरे नर-मच्छर खून नहीं पीते
सिर्फ मादा ही खून पीती है"
मैं क़ातर निगाहों से पूछता हूँ
"ये आश्वासन है या धमकी?"
वो तपाक से वार करती है
"इसमें गुंजाईश कहाँ है भ्रम की?"

'स्त्रियाँ' शायद किसी की नहीं होती,
मच्छर उसे भी परेशान करते हैं-
मादाएं मौका ढूंढती रहती हैं
मर्द सिर्फ कानों के करीब गुज़रते हैं.
एक नया हथियार* आजकल मिल गया है
घर का शक्ति-समीकरण बदल गया है
बेझिझक, दुर्गा की तरह वार करती है
मौत बन कर मच्छरों पर टूट पढ़ती है
मैं डरते हुए पूछ लेता हूँ -
'मादाओं' के जुर्म की सज़ा -
आख़िर 'मर्द' क्यों पाता है?
हाथ में रेकेट लिए, दुकानदार
से पूछा जाता है- "क्यों भैय्या,
इस से बड़ा वाला भी आता है
जो इंसानों पर चल जाता है?"

आजकल, मुझ से पहले

नमक से भी इनकी कहाँ बनी है

ज़बान, जो दातों से

बेवजह लड़ जाती है

इनको आजकल दिन-रात सहलाती है
दर्द है, तो इनका काफ़ी ज़िक्र है
सबको इनकी ही फ़िक्र है
कोई समझाता है,
बारिश से इनका पुराना रिश्ता है
पर पेट के मामलों में

Everybody... well almost everybody will agree that we Indians are the biggest Hero-Worshipers. We try, find or create Heroes around us and then start worshiping them. Mostly our Heroes come from Film-Stars, Cricketers and Politicians..... add Domestic-Helps (बाई) to the list.

Recently we lost our maid. No she didn't die..... she left our home for greener pastures. Literally, her hubby got a large chunk of land bequeathed to him by his uncle and they are planning to raise some goats, buffaloes and their own kids at the newly acquired Farm. Her move to the new place has however completely disturbed our Home. Maa used to get up at 5.30 am in the morning, all worried (but did nothing). Wife didn't get up early- may be to escape morning worries. Dad was still unaffected. Mom was sudenly on the job, searching for a new Maid. Looked like she'd dedicated all her Mornings, Noons & Evenings to the cause. The perfectionist she is, she had taken the whole process of selecting a Maid (read 'Baai') to altogether a different level. She contended there's hardly anything more Technical than selecting the right Baai! I bet, without letting any of us know, she had secretly evolved a whole set of Techniques and processes to select the right Baai for our Household. She often discussed elaborately that peace & harmony in a home actually depend on the type of Baai one has. Selecting a Baai therefore required a very systematic approach. Some parameters in the process devised by her included :

1. Age & Looks : With men in home, she has to be in the range of 38 to 45 (past youth but still capable of working hard). She should not be too gorgeous for a Baai. (Mom justified "हमको घर का काम करवाना है कोई Beauty Pageant नहीं")

2. Back Ground Check : She should have worked/ working in homes having almost same standard-of-living (so that she doesn't feel alienated)

3. Her Family : What's the main profession in her family? If she has other ladies in her house who are into the same profession (basically having a reserve in case of sick-leave)

4. Salary : She should be paid enough to be not able to afford what we can (Sadist!!)

5. Weak Negotiator : for obvious reasons.

With such guidelines having set, Mom used to be on a daily mission to find a Baai. She had taken to Morning-Walks. She initially used to observe the ladies who were moving on the road during those early hours of morning, then used to fix a Baai-looking target, used to start walking with her for the next couple of days and then finally used to pop the question "तुम झाड़ू-पोछा-बर्तन करने का कितना पैसा लेती हो?"... mostly to find strange expressions on the ladies' faces and a reply like "..अरे, मैं तो इधर सुबह बच्चों को स्कूल छोड़ने आती हूँ "... or .... "मैं और मेरे पति तो सुबह मोर्निंग-वॉक पर निकलते हैं, अलग-अलग ". But this attack by my Mom on unsuspecting Baai-type aunties had certainly made them take notice of their looks in the morning, subsequently, almost all the middle-aged & above ladies were rather better dressed on Morning-Walks.... . After many unsuccessful attempts, Mom dear started approaching the Doodhwallas, Paperwallas, Tailors, Sabziwallas in the area, "भैय्या तुम्हारे परिवार या जान-पहचान में कोई बाई है क्या?"... A few expressed their helplessness, a few more shared the concern... one even went out to share " मैडम, मेरे बीवी किसी के घर काम पर जाती है, पर हमने अपने घर के काम के लिए बाई लगा रखी है "... after repeated efforts and considering her dejected disheveled look a Chemist, on listening to her plea for 5 minutes said, "... अच्छा... आप क्या क्या कर लोगी वैसे.... देखो मेरी जान-पहचान में किसी को बाई रखनी होगी तो तुमको फ़ोन कर दूंगा .... अपना नंबर दे कर जाओ ..." Mom came running back to the home!

Finally, after SATO (Search, Assess & Target Operation) of about 20 days, she fixed 'Interviews' on a Saturday... then it was extended to Sunday. It was such an 'authoritative' feeling for all of us - as if we are recruiting some executives for some vital positions. Each one of us (Mom, Dad, me & wife) had our own set of questions and wanted to grill the candidates.

There were all sorts of Candidates. Retrospectively, they can be divided into a few broad categories, based on their performance in the 'interview' and interaction. The candidates were informally divided into 3 broad categories, one overlapping the other as The Amma Types, The Mumma Types & The Chhamma Chhamma Types.

1. The Amma Type : This was the preferred lot - for their Work-experience and experiences of Life in general. They were, however, equally authoritative. One of them - Anguri Bai was quite forth coming. As soon as Mom & Wife finished their queries, she took off with very uncomfortable and embarrassing questions like "तुम लोग सुबह कितने बजे सो कर उठते हो?", "मैं तो ये सब काम करुँगी ही, पर फिर तुम लोग दिन भर क्या करोगे?", "ये बाबूजी दिन भर घर पर ही रहते हैं क्या?, इतने बुड्ढे तो नहीं हैं, कोई काम क्यों नहीं करते ?" She was already acting like a matron, on a mission to set things right in my home. She was the 1st to be selected but didn't last for more than 8-10 days, having sufficiently rubbed the egos of one & all.

2. The Mumma Type : Then one of the other major categories was the 'Mumma' type. They just love their Mumma (Mummy) type devotion & caring for their own family and supposedly live (and work) for it. Mamta Ben, started with a lot of preconditions. Almost every condition was revolving around her family. "... मैं अपने लड़के को सुबह स्कूल छोड़कर आने के बाद ही आऊंगी... उसके बाद १० बजे वापस जा कर मेरे आदमी के लिए टिफिन बनाने का रहेगा...." ... Mom seemed to be agreeing with her. Then she continued "... अच्छा, कभी-कभी मैं शनिवार/ सन्डे नहीं भी आऊंगी... मेरे बच्चे और आदमी की छुट्टी रहती है तो हम लोग घूमने को जाते हैं..". Work-wise also she had many reservations. She would not clean the utensils used for cooking, serving and eating Non-Veg food. Once in a while her little kid will also accompany her on his holidays. Despite a long list of preconditions, the lady seemed genuine and was entrusted with the job. The 1st pinch was felt on the ensuing Saturday when she opted for a leave. On Sunday, she came to the job with her 3 year old son. The Cute-looking-little-boy, Monty, realised that her Mom had already taken a 'Permit' for his assault on our home. The boy demanded that either Cartoon Network or Pogo be tuned on the TV. Suddenly I realised both my parents & wife watching Cartoon Network, helplessly. If that was not enough, Monty further demanded, "... कुरकुरे .....". Trying to pacify him for a good 10 minutes and all of my family member trying to lure him with Gems, Uncle Chips etc, Mamta Ben had to rush down to get a pack of Kurkure. As soon as she restarted, Monty further demanded, " मम्मा.... गाना सुना ना..." and again stuck to it... after a while my Dad started clearing his throat... Mom interrupted with a, ".. ऐ मालिक तेरे बन्दे हम..." and finally, once again, Mamta had to come to our rescue with a "... क्या करूँ की साला character ढीला है..". Somehow the day ended with a unanimous decision that Mamta Ben needs to take care of her family and we better find an alternative.

3. The Chamma-Chamma type : These type were in the age range of 20-35. Highly energetic, full of excuses, keeping-up with the trends in Bollywood, Fashion, TV, Gossip etc. Chhaya was among the shortlisted candidate. Going by the age-range, nobody (neither Mom nor wife) sought my opinion in the matter. I had to pretend 'even I am least interested' and kept myself busy watching TV. Chhaya interrupted, "... अरे B4U Music लगाओ ना..." she started-off with her choice of TV Serials and Reality Shows. Looked like she's struck the chord with my wife & mom both. Then she said " ... देखो मैं सुबह जल्दी नहीं आ सकेगी...सुबह उठो फिर सबको टिफिन दो... फिर आधा-घंटा खुद तैयार हो .... ये सब इतना सुबह सुबह मुझ को नहीं जमता है ...."... a bit too much stress on 'तैयार' planted a good degree of skepticism in the minds of Mom & wife. I was still watching B4U Music, oblivious of the fact that my reactions & expressions were equally judged along with those of Chhaya. She continued "... अरे मैडम, Ready होने को टाइम तो लगेगा ही ना? .... काम पर आना है.... " People around me were obviously getting anxious on this stress on 'Ready'... suddenly 'Dhinka-Chika Dhinka-Chika' from 'Ready' started playing on B4U Music. Chhaya exclaimed, "... ये आसीन किती छान आहे ना...धिन्का-चिका... धिन्का-चिका... हे हे हे हे.....". Wife, who was till now negotiating the compensation at around Rs 2000 per month, suddenly declared "... देखो छाया, १२०० रुपये महिना से ज़्यादा नहीं देंगे... हमारे घर काम ही कितना है???...". Chhaya was awestruck, I was pretending to be ignorant but was thinking 'Stupid lady, saw the Song but didn't see that Centre Fresh-Zabaan pe Lagaam commercial just before that'. She could not bear that crash from Rs 2000 to Rs 1200 a month and the whole song & dance came to an abrupt end.

This whole exercise went on for almost a month. My Mom & Wife were about to commit something to the Gods (मन्नत). But suddenly our good deeds paid-off (by the way our deeds are good enough to be utilised for such purposes only). Aided by a lot of search and valuable inputs from Neighbours, Paper-wallas, Doodh-wallas, Sabzi-wallas we finally found a blend of all the above categories... in Jayanti Baai. She had only 1 major condition .."...मुझे कोई बाई नहीं बुलाने का, मौशी बुलाने का..". My Dad was visibly uncomfortable initially but before he could submit his grievance, I took-out the Police verification form (mandatory for hiring a domestic help) and popped the Question................. " बा..आ..आ s s s आई....तुम Sign करोगी या नहीं ...?"

एक बूढ़ा बरगद मुझे अक्सर आवाज़ देता है

कुछ अनमना सा, कुछ उदास, जटायें लटकाए

बेतरतीब सी शाखों पर चंद पत्ते

आधे सूखे हुए आधे मुरझाये

एक तरफ से निकलती पगडंडियों को

देखता टकटकी लगाये

कोई राही काश मुझ तक भी आये

बहुत अरसा कहाँ हुआ जब

हर सरगर्मी का हिस्सा था

जिसके तले रोज़ इक नया किस्सा था

खेल के मैदान के दूसरे छोर पर अब

पंचायत का नया भवन बन गया है

ग्यारह कमरों का प्राइमरी स्कूल भी

पास ही तन गया है.

गाँव में गतिविधियाँ ही चंद हो गयी हैं,

शिक्षा अब दरवाज़ों में बंद हो गयी है

शाखें भी औकात से ज़्यादा बढ़ गयी हैं,

नीम-शीशम-कनेर से बेवजह उलझ गयी हैं

लच्छु नीचे चबूतरे पर खेला, बढ़ा हुआ

गोद में झूला है, आज कुल्हाड़ी लिए खड़ा है

श्यामू का कहना है -

"कोटर में हींग भरवा दो, फिर ४० दिन बाद

नीलाम करवा दो" . पूनम कहती है

"ये बारह-मास झड़ता है, दिन भर अब

बस कचरा ही करता है "

सूरज और गोपाल जो दिन-रात

बरगद के नीचे लोटते थे,

उनको वही चाँदनी अब खटकती है

बरगद के नीचे अब नींद कहाँ लगती है.

मीरा सिर्फ वट-अमावस पर याद करती है

इक कच्चे धागे की शपथ दे जाती है

और श्यामू की साल भर की उम्र ले जाती है.

पंडितजी कभी कभार इधर भटक जाते हैं

वचनों-प्रवचनों से शर्मिंदा कर जाते हैं.

पटवारी कहता है-

इधर से पक्का रास्ता आ रहा है और अब

ये बरगद गाँव के विकास में आड़े आ रहा है.

काटेंगे फिर खोद कर जड़ें भी निकाल देंगे

जटायें कुछ काम नहीं आतीं और

लकड़ियों के उपयोग में संस्कार आड़े आते हैं

अब इंतज़ार बहुत हुआ.

तना भी गलने लगा है, छाल बिखरने लगी हैं,

जटायें भी शिखर से उतर अब,

धरा चूमने मचलने लगी हैं.

अब और इंतज़ार क्यों

और पैरवी किस बात की?

ये मंज़र अब और ना देख पाऊंगा

मुझे अब बस जल्द कटवा दो, यहाँ से हटवा दो

आखिर कब तक बर्दाश्त कर पाऊंगा

अगली बारिश में वरना

ख़ुद-ब-ख़ुद उखड़ जाऊंगा

इंसान सबसे ज्यादा बेबस कहाँ होता है?... हर इंसान अलग अलग परिस्तिथि में अलग अलग तरह से बेबस महसूस करता है... कोई अपने बॉस के आगे बेबस होता है.... कोई कर्मचारियों के सामने... कोई दुनिया के सामने. मुंबई की लोकल ट्रेन में... तीन लोगों की सीट पर अगर आप चौथे इंसान हैं तो आपकी बेबसी थोड़ी देर में ही जग-ज़ाहिर हो जाती है. आप लगभग मिमियाते हुए बाकी तीनो को निरंतर उम्मीद से देखते रहते हैं कि काश अगला स्टेशन बगल वाले का हो... या फिर खिड़की के पास वाला थोडा ध्यान हटाये तो मैं उसको यही से दबा कर कुछ और जगह 'रिक्लेम' कर लूं... आखिर पूरा मुंबई बसा ही 'reclaimed land' पर है!... इधर उधर सर्वत्र .... हर इंसान बेबस ही दीखता है... एक दिन इसी विषय पर सोचते हुए, बीवी के आदेश पर मैं सब्ज़ी लेने निकल पड़ा .... ये भी एक बेबसी ही है .... यह बात दीगर है कि अब मुझे सब्ज़ी-लेना भाने लगा है... कदमो के साथ साथ सोच भी आगे बढ़ने लगी... "सब बेबस ही हैं... किसी का कहीं कोई बस नहीं.." ..... "ये लौकी क्या भाव दी भैय्या?.... साब, ४० रु. किलो... और ये शिमला मिर्च?... साब, शिमला सस्ती हो गयी है....६० रु. किलो"... मैंने कहा "सस्ती के बाद ६० रु. ?".... सब्ज़ी वाला बोला "... अरे साब कल तक ८० बेची है... ये हरा धनिया देखो १०० रु. किलो चल रहा है अभी भी!..".... "इतनी महंगी सब्जियां, मैं बुदबुदाया... और इतने सारे प्रतिबन्ध और बंदिशें?" .... मुझे फलां सब्ज़ी पसंद है, पर बीवी वही सब्ज़ी खा नहीं सकती... फलां सब्ज़ी उसे सूखी अच्छी लगती है, तो मैं शोरबे के बिना उस सब्ज़ी कि कल्पना भी नहीं कर सकता...एक सब्ज़ी को बनाने के लिए साथ में आलू भी चाहिए, मैं उस सब्ज़ी में ज्यादा आलू भी बर्दाश्त नहीं कर सकता... कोई सब्ज़ी मुझे 'जैन-स्टाइल' (बिना लहसुन-प्याज) भाती है, तो माँ-पिताजी को उसमें तड़का चाहिए... फलां सब्ज़ी मुझे अच्छी लगती है और (खुशकिस्मती से) अन्य सबको भी पसंद है, तो वो 'टिफिन' में रखने लायक नहीं है..... इतने सारे विकल्प और लगभग सभी इतने मंहगे???... अचानक मैं अपने आप को बहुत बेबस महसूस करने लगा... किसी तरह ३० मिनिट के 'डेली-सोप' की तरह सब्ज़ी-बाज़ार की परिक्रमा की, कुछ ज़रूरी सब्ज़ियों की खरीदारी की, जिन पर कमोबेश सर्वसम्मति रही है. कुछ भ्रमित, कुछ हताश मैं घर की ओर लौट पड़ा. रोज़ाना की तरह, 'बालिका-वधु' के साथ मेज़ पर खाना खाने बैठ गया .... मुझे मेरी थाली में रखा सलाद ५० रु. के नोट में लिपटा दिखा रहा था, कटोरी में ८० रु. का नोट तैरता दिख रहा था, थाली में एक कोने में रखी सब्ज़ी की जगह मानो छुट्टे ४५ रु. पड़े थे....

..... किसी तरह खाना गले से नीचे उतरा.... आज पेट हल्का ही था, पर दिल भारी होने लगा था... मैं सोचने लगा इंसान शायद सब्ज़ी-मंडी में ही सबसे ज़्यादा बेबस होता है, आजकल... बेबसी का अहसास और उस पर विश्वास दोनों होने लगा था...कि लेटे-लेटे मेरी आँख लग गयी... हलकी सी नींद लगी ही थी कि मेरी (अब तक छटपटा रही) अंतरात्मा जैसे सीना फाड़ कर ही बाहर आ गयी और मुझे दिलासा देते हुए बोली... "बेटा, ये सच है... कोई भी इंसान आजकल सब्ज़ी बाज़ार से ज्यादा बेबस कहीं नहीं होता" .... मैं मन ही मन खीज उठा "... मुझे इन सब्जियों से स्पष्टीकरण चाहिए (These vegetables owe me an explanation)" यही सोचते हुए मैं ख़्वाबों में खोने लगा :

मेरे पलंग के सिरहाने लुढ़कते हुए टमाटर आये
कुछ सहमे कुछ शर्माए कुछ आखें चुराए
बोल पड़े, "बाकी सबके पर निकल रहे हैं
पर हम हैं की अब भी ३६ रु. किलो चल रहे हैं"
फिर बोले,"प्याज़ वैसे थोड़ी नरम है आज
पर इसका श्रेय उसे नहीं
कोल्ड-स्टोरेज मैं छुपा है राज़
स्टोरेज वालों ने धक्के मार निकाल दिया
और इसका भाव ३०रु. से १८ पर ला दिया
आलू बात-बात पर इतराता है
हर दूसरी सब्ज़ी से चक्कर चलाता है
पर अति-आत्मविश्वास में मारा जाता है-
-आलू कहाँ १०० रु. किलो बिक पाता है?
गिलकी-तोरई-लौकी लम्बी पड़ी हैं
३५-४० रु. किलो हैं, चाहे छोटी या बड़ी हैं
पालक-मेथी दोनों कोने में मुरझाई खड़ी हैं

इनको हमेशा से जल्दी पड़ी है

जब तक ताज़ी हैं - ४० रु. किलो हैं, वरना
बाद में २० रु. किलो के भाव भी सड़ी हैं
मिर्चियाँ ज़बरदस्ती की तीखी हैं
ब्लेकमेलिंग इन्होंने शायद धनिये से सीखी है
इनको मालूम है खाना इनके बिना बे-मज़ा है
६० रु. किलो में इनको खरीदना भी सज़ा है
हरा धनिया सबसे नक्-चढ़ा है
आजकल सबसे ऊपर खड़ा है
अभिमान से फूला नहीं समा रहा
१०० रु. किलो बाज़ार में है आ रहा
फ़िज़ूल के तर्क-वितर्क करता है, कहता है
- जो दिखता है, वो बिकता है
उसको गुमाँ है- उसके सामने कौन टिकता है?"

मेरी आँखों में जो आँसू रुके हुए थे
वो टमाटर की आँखों में आ गए
मुझे लगा वो मेरा दर्द पा गए
पर उनकी पीड़ा कुछ जुदा थी
रोते हुए बोले "हम कच्चे हों, या पके-पिलपिले
हर सब्ज़ी में हम ही कट-कुचल रहे हैं
... जबकि औरों के पर निकल रहे हैं

हम हैं की अब भी ३६ रु. किलो चल रहे हैं"

चेहरे पे लकीरें यूँ झाँक रही हैं

बालों में सफेदी भी अब मिलने लगी है
खुद को तसल्ली देता हूँ यही सोच कर

उपयोगिता पर कोई सवाल करूँ,

'टेम्पो' की तरफ इशारा कर
जैसे कटाक्ष करती है,लिखा है-
'मेरी चलती है तो तेरी क्यूँ जलती है'

जन्मदिन पर पुराने तोहफे 'मिस' करता हूँ
चौकलेट-केक को मन ही मन तरसता हूँ
फिर हिम्मत बटोर, पूरे आत्म-विश्वास से
दुकान से,'किसी को गिफ्ट करना है' बोल
कुछ मिठाई-चौकलेट पैक करवाता हूँ
फिर इत्मीनान से, ऑफिस के कोने में बैठ कर
'गिफ्ट' की चीज़ों का मज़ा उठाता हूँ
दन्त-चिकित्सक के शब्द याद आते हैं
मीठे के बावजूद मुंह किरकिरा कर जाते हैं
'अपनी दाढ़ों के सुराखों पर थोड़ा ध्यान दीजिये
इस उम्र में मीठा थोड़ा कम कीजिये'

'फेसबुक' भी इक अच्छा-सस्ता साधन हो गया
मेरा परिवार अचानक रातों-रात चौगुना हो गया
अल्लाह से अब एक नया शिकवा-गिला है
उम्र के इस पड़ाव पर ये सिला मिला है
पहले जिन्हें मेरी सूरत भी याद ना थी
कॉलेज की वो लडकियां दोस्ती का दंभ भरती हैं
रात १२ बजे ही 'हैप्पी बर्थ डे' विश करती हैं

बस बहुत हो गया ये अहसास-ए-बुढ़ापा
इसके पहले कि मैं खो दूं अपना आपा
सभी बुढ़ाते जवानों का आवाह्न करता हूँ
इस विषय पर अब आन्दोलन होना चाहिए
३०-बाद 'साल गिरह मुबारक' के हर सन्देश में
उम्र का ज़िक्र प्रतिबंधित होना चाहिए
ग्रीटिंग-कार्ड्स कि कंपनियों से अनुरोध हो
इस तरह के कार्ड्स-तोहफों का प्रतिरोध हो
बल्कि गुज़ारिश है, संसद में क़ानून बनाया जाये
और जन्मदिन पर उम्र के उल्लेख को
'घोर-अपराध' की श्रेणी में लाया जाये

Save from 'Saving'...

'Save' is the call God specially inscribes in the Indian psyche at the time of 'formation'. I have grown up ... or rather still growing up hearing this 'call'. At times I listen and follow, more often ignore it... after all its purely a matter of convenience!... As long as I can remember, I have been given this call of 'Save.... ' innumerable times. They might have started it long before that but probably I don't remember things that old or I was not big enough to understand that... I still remember my mom advising me continuously to 'save' almost everything for my younger brother... be it the chocolate, ice-cream or some pretty ordinary things... May be the advise to 'save something for somebody' is a way of communicating the closeness one has (or should have) with the person for whom one is advised to save... that might be the reason my mom never advised me to save anything for पड़ोस वाली आंटी कि पप्पी. I started saving a lot of big & small things for my brother and finally started taking a lot of pride in that ... expressing 'ये मेरा भाई है '. Be it my toys, my chocolates, my marbles, my tiffin-box, my pencil-sharpeners... anybody who was exclusively authorised to use it was my younger brother. I thought I was 'saving' enough...

... then in KG2, when I was asked by Lily Mam to sit next to Roopa Mishra on the very first day, I started feeling as if an access to Roopa will invariably have to be through me... I used to 'save' the adjoining seat for her in the Auto and some biscuits & gajak for her in my tiffin-box... Surprisingly, nobody ever asked me to 'save' these things for Roopa... Wrong, it was my instinct which was instructing me this time. It continued for some 3 months then Lily Mam, after probably noticing that I was 'saving' a bit too much for her, asked Roopa to sit with Ajay Jain and Chhidrup was seated next to me... me & Chhidrup hardly saved anything for each other after that!... Then during my adolescent years, my dad often used to convey his displeasure on putting on the best shirts & denims without a reason or an occasion... he would often suggest 'Why not save a few good shirts for special occasions, festivals, parties etc?'... Thank God, the 'instructions' gradually changed to 'suggestions'... but he also continued with 'Save time, time is money'... I often used to scoff it off with '... if time is Money, then Chouksey uncle who is a time-keeper with Ordnance Factory must be a very rich man!'... could never really understand 'How to SAVE time'... mostly I have believed, you cannot SAVE time- you can only properly utilize it. But, then again, proper utilization of time is relative. I often thought that while in college I was best utilizing my Fridays by seeing first-day-first-shows of all Sanjay Dutt's movies, but my parents never seemed to agree. Likewise, I advocated ultimate utilization of a Sunday by getting up after 9 in the morning, then watching BR Chopra's Mahabharat with breakfast... or having a brunch with 'Rajani'... then passing the whole day watching TV or listening to Music... my parents continued advocating 'Save time, it will pay you in the long run'.... I hardly listened and often argued '... यही तो उम्र है मस्ती करने की, बुढ़ापे में कौन मस्ती करेगा... ' the rebellious sort in me was completely against 'saving' of any type whatsoever...later in my college years, my parents advised me to save money while in hostel... I did save a bit... but... then splurged it on completely useless & worthless things... the tendency of 'Saving' had still not crept into me.

Getting into a job opens up a lot many avenues for oneself ... it also opens up a lot many avenues for multitude of advisors... your Boss, who has been waiting for all these years to share (bombard) his wealth of knowledge, finds an avenue and pours the essence advising you to save for the future, for a flat, for a car, for a family etc. The Administration Manager advises you to use email & SAVE paper, at the bottom of his signature in the mails you find the irritating 'Print this mail only if necessary'. Then there are so called investment advisors who come up with funny examples & reasons for you to invest & SAVE. They invariably start with 'I pray to God for your long & healthy life BUT... suppose....'... and then they will present the worst possible scenarios with your life... will scare the life out of you... all this in order to make you save something... last time I argued with an 'advisor' - "When I am not going to be there, you are gonna pay my nominees a huge sum of money!... they may not care a heck, having received the windfall.... and therefore may blow it up in a couple of months. How will you ensure that the money I am saving shall be utilised 'properly'? " The advisor had no reply to my logic... I further argued, "what's the point in saving for others' future at the cost of my present?...मैं अभी मर-मर के save करूँ और लोग मेरे पीछे ऐश करें... जिसको ऐश करना होगा वो अपना कमाएगा और ऐश करेगा.."... I continued "... the moment we started following the Darwin's 'Survival of the fittest' principle, a lot many pains & obligations will get eliminated on their own!"... He might have been stunned on my views & approach... but so was I (as if I had propounded a new principle contrary to the theory of Insurance or rather contrary to the theory of high value Insurance availed by paying HUGE premium).... but, then there are emotions... 'Saving' has to come out of emotions not just for the sake of it... why otherwise I would have saved a seat & my lunch for Roopa when nobody asked me to and when Roopa didn't save anything at all for me ??...

'Saving' is one of the few traits that everyone wants others to develop instead of inculcating themselves. It has lead to many a disasters. The Project Tiger started by the Indian Government in 1972 is a case in point where the Govt wanted all of us to save Tigers through print and AV campaigns but didn't do much themselves. Same is the case with our politicians who keep on advising all of us to save Electricity but their own unpaid bills run into lakhs of rupees. Everybody who advises should be leading by examples. Things may then start moving in the right direction. A group of youngsters embarked on a campaign for cleaning & saving Yamuna (River) last year set an example of how you can go all the way from Mumbai to save Yamuna at Delhi, have a blast on the way (in train), loads of fun in Delhi, countless photographs & subsequent activity on facebook and still achieve a bit, not to forget the tonnes of enjoyment both for themselves & (probably) for Yamuna!!

The crux of the matter is STOP advising me to SAVE paper, electricity, fuel, power, energy, environment, rivers (Yamuna included), Nilgiri Tahr, Indian Wild Ass ... and the whole of Earth. On the contrary, I beg to be saved from ever advising Politicians, poking relatives, uninvited advisors, Happy-to-help telecallers, ever ready consultants and self-proclaimed guides...

... so what if only 1411 Tigers are left in the wild... there is only one of my kind left in the whole world... SAVE ME

An Alternate Profession

... Got up early one morning to Milk the cows, I was new to all this... had started this little Dairy a few weeks back... I now had some 4 Cows, a calf and a Red Bull. This newly constructed Dairy, by the side of my newly acquired farm, had provision for some 20 Cows. Your newest venture gets the most of your attention, labour and everything else... so I was finding it tough to devote quite some time to my new found profession (actually an old passion) in addition to my 9 to 5 job. I always wanted to be a farmer but never really knew that it actually is a lot of hard work!... One needs to plow the fields, sow the seeds, fertilize, harvest and so on & so forth... Farming is actually a larger profession with integrated Dairy, Poultry, Sheep & Goat rearing and a hell lot of other subsidiary activities... believe me its a full-time job... you are attempting 'impossible' when you try to do it with your office-job... but that's what you have friends for... I was never so close to some of the persons as I am right now (after taking up farming). Some of my college-mates (girls) who never even used to look at me properly while in college, are suddenly fertilizing my crops, gifting me calves, horses, goats, sheep and many trees. God has never been so kind. God has also been specially kind with respect to the chunk of land I acquired. Its probably an irrigated land with enriched soil. Its a great boon as I never have to irrigate my crops. I am really blessed - my friends take turns to fertilize my crops. Irony is that I never really get to meet them while they are at it in my farm... I also have a feeling that they neither meet each other while working in my farm even at the same point of time... I have grown in status and expertise in cultivating some particular crops. Initially, I used to get a bit too affected by the local market it is not so anymore. While routinely visiting the local vegetable market, on finding that prices of Onions or green chillies were going up, I used to sow these vegetables in my farm the very next morning before leaving for office. Now, having achieved a bit, I have a tractor, harvester and a seeder. Now I often cultivate Pineapple, Bell Peppers, Artichokes, Daffodils, Red Tulips, Lavenders etc without a worry about the market to sell them. A lot many of my friends now vie for being my neighbours... Life has never been so good as far attention is concerned. But it does have its own share of responsibilities, one should reciprocate by gifting back the friends & neighbours and fertilizing their crops. It is probably the camaraderie among friends & neighbours that pays off everybody - The trees are producing fruits without any inputs or care, the hen are producing eggs without disruptions, cows & goats are producing milk, crops grow on their own... you only have to harvest everything. Suddenly the farming seems very easy & enjoyable...

.... more so on 'Farmville' .... its addictive... it does give a great high being the cynosure of all your friends' activities who have taken up 'farming' ... makes you feel a lot privileged ... I am now seriously thinking of giving-up my 9 to 5 job and take up farming full-time!

Indian Government has lately been trying its best to provide basic Medical Facilities to one & all... beyond caste, creed, color, status... the stress has certainly been on covering almost all of about 638365 villages ... the Government is offering subsidies on Medical Studies in some colleges... of course with a rider that pass-outs will initially be posted at some villages in interiors. There's a 'Lock-in'... the 'fresh' docs can't get a transfer for a period of two years... the aspirants plan variety of things to escape such postings... strangely though, almost all such postings are followed by recommendations from the very same MLAs, MLCs, MPs... Ministers... Leaders who have been instrumental in making this 'policy' of rural postings. These doctors are then required to submit their performance report on a monthly basis... and it should invariably reflect some improvement...

Dr. Jeevan Pyaare Gautam (JPG - as he was fondly called by his classmates of MBBS for his ability of creating great pictures, mostly out of his imagination), freshly out of the college, got posted at a village called Phanda in Sehore district in Madhya Pradesh. As is with any new responsibility, JPG enjoyed being addressed as 'Daaktar Saab' by the 650 odd villagers of Phanda and of the adjoining villages. The village chief 'Sarpanch' - Chaudhari Mitthu Singh deputed one of his men called Pungi Lal at JPG's service. Pungi was actually an all-rounder... Helper, Cook, Driver, Masseur... and even a Compounder. Pungi used to accompany JPG to everywhere, from Patients' residences to weekly bazaars at Phanda and neighbouring villages. He gradually started being recognized as 'Compounder saab'. More than Jeevan Pyaare, Pungi started discussing ailments and their cure at length at various forums- Panchayats, Vivah-Bhoj, Funerals, family gatherings.... etc etc. JPG was a born attention-seeker and he started relishing all this due & undue attention he was getting in the village. JPG was mostly busy being the Guest of Honour at all sorts of functions in Phanda and nearby villages... needless to say, most of this was courtesy Pungi Lal ji. Both the dignitaries used to travel these distances on JPG's second hand bike- Kawasaki Bajaj Caliber 112. Pungi used to be the Master of Ceremonies on almost all such programmes and more often than not used to test JPG's oratory skills... " राम आसरे भैय्या के तीसरे बेटे के मुंडन में आज हमारे बीच हैं डाक्टर साब, डाक्टर साब आप सब लोगों को बतायेंगे कि बच्चों का मुंडन कराने के क्या फायदे हैं और मुंडन करने की सही उम्र क्या होनी चाहिए..." or on rather further weird issues like "... बड़ी ख़ुशी की बात है कि गुल्लू की गैय्या गेरू को कल रात बड़ा खूबसूरत बछड़ा हुआ है - गजनी, डाक्टर साब माँ-बेटे कि सेहत बनाये रखने के उपाय आज आप सब को बतायेंगे..." all this went on for almost two and a half months ... JPG also kind of started enjoying this... he often thought why was there a need to study Medicine if he was doing (and enjoying) such kind of activities!... In the meantime, they were attending to local patients... which rarely turned up at the Government dispensary... since Doctor & Compounder were hardly available!

Suddenly... one fine morning, Dr Jeevan Pyaare Gautam, MBBS received a telegram from सहायक निदेशक, चिकित्सा सेवाएं, मध्य प्रदेश शासन (Assistant Director, Medical Services, Govt. of M.P.) with a message "... आपका मासिक प्रगति प्रतिवेदन पिछले दो माह से प्राप्त नहीं हुआ है, कृपया तुरंत प्रेषित करें और भविष्य में इसकी प्राप्ति अगले माह कि ७ तारीख तक सुनिश्चित करें ..." (We have not received your Monthly Progress Report for the last two months. Please forward it immediately and also ensure its receipt by the 7th of next month, in future)... There was no 'progress' as such, JPG had hardly treated any patients during the past two months... and was completely clueless on what to make-up in the 'Progress-Report' that too for the last two months...

He turned to Pungi Lal for a solution. After discussing all the technicalities, Pungi Lal opined that creating fake patients and submitting a false report might end up terminating his services, if proved even in future. This is how the previous Medical Officer- Dr Laxmi Prasad lost his job. He suggested that they should work overtime and Check each and every resident of the village as a patient, to make-up for the shortfall (in numbers) of the last two months. Pungi further suggested that he himself will go village to village urging people to get themselves checked up and 'cured' even for very ordinary& minor problems. People started flooding the Government Dispensary at Phanda in hoards... much beyond the expectations of both JPG and Pungi. Initially Pungi liked it and could generate the required data within a period of some 5-6 days... the people, however, continued to turn up day-after-day-after-day..... Daaktar saab had not much aptitude left for his real profession after an initial taste of 'Chief Guestship'. Pungi was also not enjoying this 'real' work-load, after all he always aspired for 'bigger' things in life. People continued to visit JPG & Pungi with all sorts of ailments... "डाक्टर साब, मेरी पिंडली में बहुत खुजली हो रही है दो दिनों से"... या फिर.... "... साब मेरी नाक के अन्दर छोटी फुंसी हो गयी है... आजकल नाक में ऊँगली करने में बहुत दर्द होता है"... or else..."..डाक्टर साब, आजकल कई दिनों से रोज़ रात में जोर जोर से आवाज़ के साथ खट्टी डकारें आती हैं..".... This was way too much for JPG... suddenly he was hating his profession, posting , village-life... Pungi...and everything.

... JPG was not the one to give up so easily.... or rather he was not in a financial position to leave the job for a city-job by paying the bond money of Rs. 2.5 Lacs... he contemplated various options to go back to his old 'job-profile' while adhering to official reports etc. The only way he could go back to his old relaxed ways was by reducing the number of patients who were still coming in loads... JPG thought this reduction can only be achieved if he started giving more time on individual patients BUT the ailments were so minor that somehow it was not possible to devote more time on each individual patient. ... Theoretically, he thought he would increase the time taken for diagnosis of a patient, this would not only keep the patients happy (that Daaktar saab was giving him so much time) but will also not reflect badly in his 'Monthly Progress Reports'... here was the solution, Dr. Jeevan Pyaare Gautam started asking all sorts of weird questions while diagnosing the diseases...A patient of constipation was bombarded with questions like - "क्या जब से तुम्हारी प्रेमिका की शादी हुई है, ये कब्ज की शिकायत बनी हुई है?"... या फिर.. "स्कूल में तुम्हें अंग्रेजी वाली मैडम पसंद थीं या विज्ञान वाली?"... या फिर "तुम साइकिल का पंचर गेंदालाल के यहाँ बनवाते हो या पूरनचंद के यहाँ ?"... almost at the end he used to face a relevant question like "कल रात तुमने क्या खाया था... दही-चावल?".... similarly a patient of Eczema had to answer questions like - "... तुम्हारे माँ-बाप ने भाग के शादी की थी या गाँव में?"... या फिर ...."तुम हनुमान जी की पूजा ज्यादा करते हो या शिव जी की?"... या ... "तुम्हें धनिया की चटनी पसंद है या पुदीना की?"... finally at the end only was he asked about any skin allergies he had.... a patient of common cold had to face questions like -.."तुम्हारे हिसाब से शोले में ज्यादा पावरफुल रोल किसका था - जय का या वीरू का?"... या... "तुम लाईफबॉय से नहाते हो या रेक्सोना से?"... या फिर ..."तुम्हारी भैंस 'भूरी' ज्यादा दूध देती है या 'दुलारी'?"... everyone initially thought that Daaktar saab was doing a detailed diagnosis... only to realise a few weeks later that its better to try home-remedies for such minor problems than answer all sorts of awkward questions at Dispensary...

The flood of patients finally started receding after a few days... credit to the long interrogatory sessions. After a few weeks there were virtually no patients... the time for next 'मासिक प्रगति प्रतिवेदन' was already there... Both JPG & Pungi submitted a detailed report on Patients treated during last month. The major difference being, this time they were stressing more on the Quality & Details of diagnosis than the number of patients treated. The next couple of months saw further more more 'Details' ... and then further more... after 4 months or so ... they were exactly back to their initial life and job-profile... The Monthly Progress Report mentioned... 'No Patients during last month'.... The inference derived - "Either There are no more patients or people have stopped falling ill and all diseases have been eradicated since our postings at Phanda"... As is mostly the case - Higher-ups are more impressed by the way content is 'presented' than the 'content' itself... Dr. Jeevan Pyaare Gautam, MBBS got promoted and posted at his home town at Harniya Khedi, Mhow and Shri Pungi Lal Choubey got 'permanent' as Compounder (now addressed as Daaktar Saab) at Phanda.

मामूली आविष्कार जिन से (मेरी) दुनिया बदल गयी

काफ़ी समय हुआ... सोचता हूँ कुछ चीजों के आविष्कार और उपयोग सुझाने वाले लोगों का 'शुक्रिया' अदा करना चाहिए... ऐसी बहुत सी चीजें हैं जो आपने, मैंने, हम सबने कभी न कभी उपयोग की होंगी ... पर कभी, चंद सेकंड्स रुक करा सोचा नही की हम ये स्वीकार करें की ये चीज़ें ना होती तो जीवन वाकई दूभर होता। बहुत सोचा... इस लिस्ट में क्या शामिल करुँ क्या नहीं... जो मुझे ज़्यादा उपयोगी लगा, जोड़ दिया है... आप अपनी चीजें नीचे टिप्पणियों (कमेंट्स) में जोड़ सकते हैं :

१ एलास्टिक : बहुत सारी चीजों में इसका उपयोग हुआ है और होता रहेगा पर मैंने महसूस किया है अगर अधोवस्त्रों और पायजामों में इसका उपयोग नहीं होता तो बहुत सारे लोगों को अधिकतर कार्य शायद एक ही हाथ से करना पड़ते। एलास्टिक आपको एक अलग प्रकार का आत्मविश्वास देती है की विपरीत परिस्तिथियों में भी वस्त्र अपने स्थान पर बने रहेंगे। ये विश्वास, दिन हो या रात, आपको एक विशेष प्रकार की निश्चिंतता देता है.

२ जीभी : दाद देना पड़ेगी उसके दिमाग की जिसने सोचा की जीभ को सुविधाजनक रूप से साफ़ करने के लिए भी कोई ऐसा यन्त्र हो सकता है. सोचिये शरीर के एक ऐसे अंग को आप दोनों हाथ बाहर रखे ही भी आसानी से साफ़ कर सकते हैं जो पूर्णतया मुंह के अन्दर ही रहता है.

३ आइसक्रीम कोन : आइसक्रीम अपने आप में दूध और क्रीम को खाने का एक बहुत स्वादिष्ट और सुविधाजनक तरीका है. पर एक बार पिघलने पर इसको संभालना दूभर हो जाता है. यह हमेशा संभव भी नहीं होता की आप किसी बर्तन में रख कर इसे खाएं. कोन से बेहतर आइसक्रीम खाने का उपाय शायद ही दूसरा कोई हो. इस तरह ना सिर्फ आप अपनी सुविधा से इसे किसी भी स्थान पर ले जा कर खा सकते हैं बल्कि खाने पश्चात बर्तन लौटाने या फेंकने का सरदर्द भी नहीं रहता.

४ हथोड़ी : एक लोहे की पतली तार-नुमा वस्तु को किसी अपेक्षाकृत नरम वस्तु के अन्दर पहुंचाने के लिए हथोड़ी से सुविधाजनक और सस्ता शायद कोई औजार नहीं है. चूँकि हम लगभग सभी इस औजार का उपयोग होश सँभालने के दिनों से ही कर रहे हैं इसलिए अब ये सोचना और स्वीकार करना नामुमकिन सा लगता है की इसके बिना भी कभी काम होता होगा. दाद देना पड़ेगी उसके दिमाग जिसने सोचा की ऐसा भी कोई औजार हो सकता है जिसका सिर अगर उसके लक्ष्य के सिर से बड़ा और वज़नी तो वो अपने लक्ष्य को आसानी से आगे धकेल सकता है.

५ टी.वी. का रिमोट कंट्रोल : एक वो भो ज़माना था जब इंसान (कम से कम भारत में) सोचता भी नहीं था की टीवी देखने के लिए भी आपको विकल्प मिलेंगे. १९८०-८५ के आसपास जब टीवी पर सिर्द दूरदर्शन आता था तोह कम से कम मैं तो नहीं ही सोचता था की कभी ऐसा दिन भी होगा जब दूरदर्शन के अलावा भी कुछ देखूँगा... सच कहूं तो इस दिशा में इंसान सोचता भी शायद नहीं था... पर आज का दिन है..१००...२००.. २५०.. चैनल की संख्या लगभग अनियंत्रित होती जा रही है... जहां एक चैनल पर न्यूज़, फिल्म, नाटक... खेल, रंगोली, कृषि-दर्शन से ले कर पता नहीं क्या क्या आता था, अब इन सभी एक एक चीज़ों के लिए कई कई चैनल हैं. ज़रा सोचिये, अगर इस दशा में आपके पास रिमोट ना हो तो चैनल न. १२ से १८२ तक पहुँचने में आपकी नानी को भी नानी याद आ जायेगी. इस खोज ने हालाँकि एक नए युद्ध को ज़रूर जन्म दे दिया है - रिमोट के लिए घर में युद्ध. मेरे और भाई की आपस की लडाई में मैं अपने लिया नया रिमोट ले आया... जिसके साथ एक टीवी फ्री था!

... ऐसे अनेकों-अनेक उदहारण हमारे चारों तरफ बिखरे पड़े हैं... हजारों-लाखों चीज़ें हमारी ज़िन्दगियों को रोज़ प्रभावित करती हैं.. ये चंद चीज़ें मुझे याद आयीं ... आप अपने पसंदीदा उदहारण नीचे 'Comments' में शामिल कर सकते हैं...

सबसे बड़ा सुख

परिस्थितियों के मुताबिक हम अक्सर विभिन्न चीजों की व्याख्या अलग अलग तरह से करते रहते हैं. ... एक सन्डे की दोपहर, नए नए ख़रीदे बीन-बैग पर कुछ आढा-टेढा सा लेटने की कोशिश करता हुआ मैं सोच रहा था 'साला, इस से बड़ा सुख कोई नहीं'... एक दोपहर में खाना खा कर, ऑफिस-घर के काम-काज से बेपरवाह, बेतरतीब से पड़े हुए एक पसंदीदा मैगजीन पढ़ना... वाकई में बड़ा सुख है.... पर सुख वास्तव में आपेक्षिक (relative) है ... किसी विशेष समय पर आपको कोई बहुत बडी चीज़ भी वो सुख नही दे पाती जो एक बहुत मामूली सी चीज़ दे देती है. फिर सुख प्रदान करने वाली चीज़ों की लागत का ध्यान रखना भी ज़रूरी है.... अब सुख की खातिर हर आम आदमी तो अपनी पत्नी या प्रेमिका को एक एयरबस A-३२० तो गिफ्ट नहीं कर सकता ना?... बहुत सारे मुझ जैसे आम आदमी तो पत्नी की मांग पर हीरों-का-हार या विदेशों में छुट्टियां देने में भी अक्सर सक्षम नहीं हो पाते हैं.

इस तरह सुख की परिभाषा में दोनों मापदंडों का अनुपात आवश्यक है - सुखानुभूति और उस पर आने वाली लागत. संभवतः कुछ भद्रपुरुष इस बात पर भी सहमत होंगे कि आपकी सुखानुभूति और उसे प्राप्त करने का माध्यम दूसरों के आराम और दिनचर्या में बाधक नहीं होना चाहिए... वरना कुछ स्वघोषित गायक और संगीतकार रियाज़ के नाम पर दूसरों का जीना हराम कर देंगे. वहीँ कुछ मनचले युवा रोज़ सड़क पर कई लोगों को कुचलेंगे... अपना वाहन-चालन का रस लेते हुए. आज भी कई लोग इस में ही बहुत सुख ले लेते हैं कि उन्होंने फलां किले के खंडहरों पर कहीं कोने में चॉक से 'दिल' का निशान बना कर गोद दिया है "Moolchand luvs Sunita"... बहुत से मजनू स्कूलों- कॉलेजों के टॉयलेट में "रूपा तू मेरी है - श्रीकांत" या फिर "प्रेमलता-मेरे दिल की रानी, I love you Premlata" जैसी घोषणाएं करके अजीब सुख महसूस करते हैं... ये हालाँकि समझ से अब तक परे है की रूपा 'बोयज़ टॉयलेट' आकर श्रीकांत की प्रेम-विज्ञप्ति कैसे पढ़ पायेगी या फिर प्रेमलता किसके दिल की रानी है.... और अगर है भी तो ये सन्देश प्रेमलता तक पहुंचेगा कैसे?

खैर, सुख की ना ख़त्म होने वाली मेरी अपनी खोज में मैंने कई विकल्प तलाशे. एक या दूसरे मापदंड पर एक के बाद एक रद्द होते विकल्पों के बीच मैं सोचने पर मजबूर हो गया की ऐसी क्या चीज़ है जो मुझे ( और अन्य सभी को भी ) उसकी लागत के अनुपात में अधिकतम सुख की अनुभूति देती है... बहुत दिमाग दौड़ाया... काफी देर सिर खुजाता रहा पर किसी चीज़ पर बात जमती नहीं दिख रही थी... आखिर सिर खुजाते-खुजाते अहसास हुआ की शायद 'यही' वो चीज़ है जिसके लिए मैं दर-दर भटक रहा था... सहसा अहसास हुआ की मेरी शर्तों को कोई सुख अगर सबसे अधिक योग्यता से पूरा करता है तो शायद 'यही' वो 'सुख' है..

..... अ...आ...sss..ह..हा..हा... ज़रा सोचिये क्या इस से बड़ा कोई सुख है जब आप की पीठ में जोर से खुजली हो रही है और आप किसी तरह अपने हाथ को लगभग तोड़-मरोड़ के अपनी पीठ के उस क्षेत्र तक पंहुचा लेते हैं जो आपने आज तक सीधा अपनी आँखों से देखा तक नहीं है.. फिर धीरे-धीरे रफ़्तार पकड़ते हुए आप अपनी उँगलियों को एक ताल में चलाते हैं और आँखें बंद कर ये सोचना भी नहीं चाहते की ये उंगलियाँ कब रुकेंगी... सचमुच इस से बड़ा सुख शायद और कोई नहीं... या फिर, पसीने से उत्पन्न खुजली जो आपके अधो-वस्त्रों के किनारों पर मचल रही हो... पर अपनी महिला सह-कर्मी या सह-पाठी की नज़रों के सामने होने से आप अपने हाथ वहाँ तक बढा भी नहीं पा रहे हैं... फिर, भगवान् आखिर आप की सुन लेता है... और अचानक ही वो अपने कंप्युटर स्क्रीन पर ध्यान गडा देती है ... फिर, मौके का फायदा उठाते हुए, भगवान् का शुक्रिया अदा करते हुए... आप उन दो-चार मिनटों में ही जैसे एक सदी से उठ रही खुजली को मिटा लेना चाहते हैं... सोचिये और बताइए.. इस लागत में इस से ज्यादा सुख की अनुभूति आपको कहीं मिल सकती है... ये बात दीगर है की 'खुजली' की अगली अवस्थाएँ, दाद और खाज, खुजाने की पूरी प्रक्रिया में से 'सुख' का अंश लगभग गायब कर देती... इसीलिए, मेरी निजी गुजारिश मान कर, जब मौका मिले, खूब खुजाएँ...इस विषय पर अब तक के सबसे प्रचलित विज्ञापन को थोड़ा मरोड़ते हुए - खुजली करने वाले, बी-टेक्स लगाने से पहले, जी भर खुजा ले...

During my recent annual pilgrimage to the Hospital, owing to my Dad’s unwritten pact with the Medical community, I got a chance to spend more time in the Intensive Care Units, ICU (and more so in the lobby outside ICU) in one of the biggest hospitals at Bombay. I have been visiting these ICUs on a regular basis for quite some time now. Having covered these Units of some of the big & small hospitals of Bhopal, Indore and Mumbai, a few things appear common to all. The characters mentioned in the starting are common to almost all the ICUs, except for the persons playing these Characters.

Trying to sleep outside the ICU, in the lobby, amongst the snoring-sounds of other concerned relatives, I started cursing my fate in the middle of the night. This cursing started for the loss of sleep, which I attributed to uncomfortable Bed (a steel Chair), which I further attributed to insufficient provision for relatives & families of patients by the Hospital management, which was further attributed to my Dad’s illness (owing to which I was in the hospital), which in turn was my misfortune… and finally the God was found to be responsible for everything bad happening in my life – due to which I was not able to have a good night’s sleep… I wanted to scream “Bhagwaan mere peechhe kyun pade ho?”… What for am I made to suffer outside an ICU… year after year after year??... a lot of similar questions were thumping on my mind, with my eyes closed… senses awake…

… Suddenly I heard a loud voice… could be heard only by me – loud & clear, as if coming through an earphone… “Why are you cursing me?”… “who’s that?” I retorted?... “Arre… I am the God…your Bhagwaan… have come to meet you”… my senses further shaken-up, I asked – “… is this ICU the only place where I can SEE YOU, may be that’s why it’s called ICU?”… God said… “No, rather this is the place where I see you.”… I opened my eyes to find nobody standing anywhere in the lobby… still, I made myself believe that it was indeed the God I was arguing with… still doubting that, I almost shouted… “if you are seeing me then why the hell am I (and my Dad) suffering so much?... and why can’t I see you still”… God replied, “it’s not you alone who are suffering… look at others in this ICU… and you are seeing me so many times during the day… I ‘call’ you here to see me… and realise and accept ‘I See You’…” I didn’t know how to argue and thought I’ll try and verify whatever God said… had a nice sleep after that, being confident that God is seeing me here and so am I… ‘ICU’ both ways.

Argument of the last night started my search for the God around me, next morning. I found the liftman – Shirke, the very first man next morning. Looking fresh for the morning shift. I tried impressing him with a smile hoping this exchange of smiles will yield some dividends when I’ll try to get into the lift during the day (without a pass). … God’s statement flashed in my mind “I ‘call’ you here to see me… and realise and accept ‘I See You’…”….. suddenly Shirke started looking like God. I thought may be its God who’s taking me, and many like me (who are suffering much more) to our patients, doctors, Canteen, Operation Theatres with a smile (and sometimes without a Pass)… the regard ceased the moment Shirke demanded ‘Saab… aap logon ko without Pass itna oopar neeche le ke jaata… hamara Chai-pani bhi toh socho!’… I disembarked from the lift, with a broader smile, somewhat challenging that of Shirke… sitting outside the ICU, I was wondering, questioning – I still can’t see you.

I was sitting in the lobby... a voice with a southy accent shrieked - "1064 ke saath kawn hai?"... I murmured, idhar sabke saath Bhagwaan hai... she repeated "... 1064.." and I suddenly realised it was my Dad's bed number and I was with 1064... I rushed to her, reading the Name-Card which read Sister Nancy Nair. She said I have been attending your Dad since last night... "Jao abhi cleaning & sponge ke liye Mausi ko bulao"... I went to the 'Mausi-Room' on 5th Floor and enquired about the Mausi on Duty for assisting Sis Nancy. One middle-aged Mausi accompanied me in the lift,on her own she started murmuring ... "dekho Babu, hum logon ko kya life hai, jitna apun ke ghar-parivaar wale logon ki care nahin karte, tum logon ki karte hain..." ... I thought.."this is it"... dekho Bhagwaan kitne alag-alag roopon mein milta hai... she concluded her murmur with... " Babu per day 50 Rs. ke hisaab se de dena"... "Aage aapki khushi, mangte hum log kisi se nahn hai"... I thought Bhagwaan is checking my belief again and again...

I was quite impressed by sisters Nancy Nair's & Suby Verghese's support and care of all my Dad's requirements & medication. It is an established fact now that almost 85-90 percent of beautiful-working-Mallu women are professional nurses, the not-so-good looking fat girls join Movies! I used to admire their dedication, day & night taking care of injections, ventilator, bio-prep, medicines, tests ... at times I used to think while lying on the floor at midnight... these sisters were more than my Dad's real sisters, while I was trying to sleep at night they used to try to keep awake so that they don't miss out any observations related to my Dad... I thought for a moment "That's how you find God among humans"... then I was handed over a Bill one morning before the Doctor's visit, to pay in Cash... on enquiry Sister Verghese told me that they had to order those medicines from a chemist outside the hospital... the same thing continued for the next 5 days before I intervened by asking for a Doctor's prescription... hope of finding God was waning yet again... I screamed inside... "Bhagwaan tum ho kahaan??"... I was calming myself down when a hoarse voice instructed all the attendants " ... ab shaam saat baje ke pahle koi nahin aana... yahaan hospital mein doctors, nurses sabko dekhtey rahtey hain... ye ICU hai... itni gardi nahin chahiye idhar.." I tried my best to agree to his declaration... my Dad had also started improving and was feeling much better now on the 7th day... he was actually seeing his God in Dr Prakash Gaikwad, MD. Out of his new found confidence and excitement, he requested Dr Gaikwad in a self-assuring way "... Sir, is baar mera full check-up karwa do... kahin kuchh complication na rah jaaye..." ... instead of assuring a recovering patient, Dr decided to grab the opportunity with both the hands and all the hands of his colleagues from Cardiology, ENT, Medicine, Gastroenterology etc... all the 'Gods' combined, started trying their bests to rescue my Dad from the 'evils'... with a considerable price-tag though... I could do nothing except "Hey Bhagwaan!"... my search continued... Rathoreji probably read my sufferings & frustration and approached me one night... "Aapko Saify Hospital jaana chahiye tha, udhar wo loag itna nahin loot-te... " understanding his intent, I questioned him ..." kya Rathoreji, aap 8 saal se idhar ho... apne Hospital ke khilaaf bol rahe ho?"... Rathoreji sympathized, "... arre saab abhi ek-do din mein aap ke papa ko ye loag discharge karengey... mere do-teen sau rupaye ke liye main apko mis-guide to nahin karoonga na... toh agle baar idhar nahin aana..."... I understood his intent but was afraid of his anticipation.

Dad finally got discharged after almost 11 days in ICU and two days in a private ward. Shirke was the man who met me most often during this period... he was bound to be most 'hopeful'... after dropping my Dad into the Ambulance, he 'accompanied' me to 'assist' in settling the final dues... frustrated in flashes, I murmured... "har cheez mein saala dikkat hai... Abhi Bhagwaan kahin raha hi nahin...", understanding my angst and not probably my frustration, Shirke replied "Abhi Bhagwan se kya kaam phans raha hai saab aapka... mere saath lift-man tha... tabiyat theek nahin rahti thi... idhar bahut pressure-job hai saab, usko sambhalne ko bilkul nahin hota tha... abhi do saal hua Retirement liya..."... I settled my Bills, Shirke diligently put all the papers in a File and handed it over to me. Without even looking into his eyes I put a crumpled 100 Rs. note in his hand whispering 'Thank You'... Shirke informed me "saab hum loag teen loag hain... teeno shift main" ... Looking straight into his eyes now, I tucked another 100 Rs note into his shirt-pocket and started moving... thinking my meeting with the God was only a dream probably... he & me were yet to come face-to-face... but then there was still some belief that he was seeing me all through these days in & around ICU... hope in my Dad's eyes corroborated my belief to an extent...

I was probably looking for God in humans I came across... I was trying to find him in their dedication, service, assurance, sympathy.... let's accept it-we are not Gods, we only carry a part of him which we exhibit as per our conveniences - we have individually defined 'Nobility'... our greeds have far exceeded our worths... Bhagwaan bhi kab tak sambhalega, achchha hua retire ho gaya!

In my Next Birth - Batata Vada

Recently, while going thru my facebook account, I hit on a quiz - 'What would you be in your next birth?'... not been able to get the sense of this whole quiz... I quizzed myself - What am I in my this birth... to be frank, I have been struggling for an answer all these years, this question though is still unanswered... I didn't give a damn to the quiz... sometimes, the things you try to avoid, kind of roam more all over the mind... a whole variety of thoughts started coimng to my idle mind... what if...?, what if I become.....?

After a lot of 'what ifs?'... my idle mind sparked - why only for next birth... why not for next-to-next... and further next etc! As Dr. Amartya Sen has titled one of his works 'The Argumentative Indian'... my mind argued, instead of 'What would you be?' can't it be 'What you want to be in your next birth?'... In any case, both the options cannot be verified. Then why not 'select' your next birth instead of carrying what's been 'imposed'... like I wanted to be Sir Edmund Hillary in my present birth or may be Sir Richard Branson or may be Mickey Mouse or may be a Jackfruit etc etc... but God made me what I am!... may be I didn't put in my request in advance...

... being undecided on what I want to be in my next birth... I started thinking about next birth...and then next... further next... to accommodate all the options. I zeroed-in on a few things that have fascinated me all along, by virtue of their looks, utility and various other features... being a decent cook myself, 'Food' was the first category that flashed in my mind... and... I almost screamed - Wowww!... I wanna be a Batata-Vada!!!

I just loved the thought... In a Vada-paav, how I would lie encushioned in a split fresh paav...wowww!... Some gorgeous girls taking large bites out of me and requesting the chaat-wala "भैय्या इस पर ज़रा हरी चटनी डालना"... I am simply thrilled imagining the freshly ground mint/ dhaniya flavoured 'hari chatni' flowing all over me... Can it get more cool??. How the top executives will stop mid-way to their homes for a bite..."चल यार, एक एक Vada-Paav मार के चलते हैं"... even their bosses don't get such a preferential treatment. I am ecstatic, just imagining how I'll be a part of get-togethers, friends' reunions or even small parties... people trying to snatch- grab-hold-bite me .... suddenly realising (and murmuring)... ऊपर से ठंडा लग रहा था ... पर अन्दर से आलू साला बहुत गरम है .... what a feeling it is to get noticed even in such parties & get togethers - what more can you ask for?

Like IMG, Globosport, Nimbus, Percept D'Mark, PMG etc vie for Sachin Tendulkar, Sania Mirza... how all the famous brands will vie for a share of mine - be it Jumbo King, Goli, the local 'Ganesh cha Vada-paav' or a politically motivated 'Shiv Vada-Paav (launched by Shiv Sena to counter north Indian chaat-waalas)'. Finding life-long friendships in 'लसून ठेचा (A very hot dry Garlic-Red Chilli-Lime mixture)' is already giving me goosebumps!!!... I am already feeling honored, how people won't mind taking me home to their wives... लाजवंती, ... छज्जू हलवाई के यहाँ गरम गरम निकल रहे थे ... मैं चार पैक करवा लाया ...

... I firmly believe, being a Batata-Vada is not an ordinary deal, it lets you - grab a lot of attention, be relished by others, being tasteful, find life-long friends and bring a lot of joy to every life you touch. What more can you ask for in a life-time?

... Given a chance, I would love to be a Batata-Vada in my next birth... is there anybody now who wouldn't??

Daanton Daanton Mein

Recently, while on a leisure trip to Malaysia... I had the fortune of pampering my own self. The eight days trip started off with luxuries at Langkawi... I got myself further tanned on the beach... then took the cable-car to Genting Highlands... it was great being suspended in a Box some 60 feet above ground, which was nowhere visible because of the floating clouds. By now I was attempting all sorts of cuisines ... which seemed within my capabilities.

My nightmare started on the second night at Genting, when a grain of 'saunf' got trapped inside my already broken tooth... a molar precisely (lovingly called दाढ़ in hindi)... the painful journey took off within the next 20 minutes or so.... I tried everything available starting from a tooth-pick to a needle available in the complimentary sewing-kit... to a thread pulled out of the hotel towel... to a chewing-gum (thinking the saunf will come out stuck in the Chewed-Gum)...and what not. After literally running around in the corridors & lobby of the hotel, I could locate an indian doctor at 4.30 am... I barged into his cabin with mouth wide open.... holding my jaw which was already swollen... he looked inside my mouth for some 7-8 minutes... the aroma of fish-tikka that I had last night was probably still emanating... or may be he started relishing the Mooli-ka-paratha that I had with the tikka... in any case 'Mooli' is well-known for its after-tastes... after the complete investigation he kind of proudly declared that he was a General Physician and tried explaining me that Dentistry is altogether a different science. Till the moment he was inside my mouth ... the doc seemed like a God and I was assuring myself that I will be relieved of my excruciating pain... the moment he said he can't do much... I got determined that I'll get my self cured... the famous hindi movie song flashed all over my mind where Rishi Kapoor stands in front of Sai Baba and sings ... तेरे दर पे आया हूँ कुछ कर के जाऊंगा, झोली भर के जाऊंगा या मर के जाऊंगा... he kind of understood my intent and prescribed a pain-killer for immediate relief. Advised me to come back again at 9.30 am to see the Dentist. I was there at 8.45... still holding my 'jabda'. The lady appeared at 9.20 am and was glad to see me with a swollen lower jaw... me being the ONLY patient available... she smilingly assured, 'I'll call you first'... I thanked her for the consideration! ... I was lying on that longish chair with mouth wide open... the lady was still smiling and started off with 'what all you had last night?'... I bluntly said 'severe pain & swelling'... 'naughty'... she meant by those looks... then she kind of found so many problems & imperfections in my mouth... and said it's a Four-sitting course and she'll have to do a root-canal-treatment... I reminded her that I had come to visit Genting... not on a Resident Visa. She prescribed a pain-killer and an anti-biotic and advised me not to be worried about this swollen jaw... I jumped from the chair asking "Will swelling be alright Doctor?"... "No", she said "You'll get used to it"...

Next two days in Kuala Lumpur passed with a bit less pain and seemingly a bit less swelling... my wife being quite cooperative in assuring me after every 2 hours "it's getting lesser"... almost 27 of the next 60 hours passed in me asking her about the 'status' of swelling or observing myself in the mirror in bathroom... in shops.... in the rear-view of a taxi... even replied to Air-hostesses looking out of the window (while it was completely dark outside)... reached India at midnight ... but was not ashamed of the swelling as most of the 'taxi-wallas' looked similar with Gutkha/ paan tucked on one of the sides of their mouths! Next morning, without any further delay, I sought opinions from office colleagues about the Dentist available near my residence. They reached a sort of consensus on Dr. N. D. Shah, BDS. I was his first patient that morning. The doctor got overwhelmed on hearing that I had come from Malaysia, the previous night and it took me some 10 minutes to convince him that I had not come all the way from Malaysia for a treatment from him but I stay here in Mumbai only. Gujju Bhai started off with "Main bees saal se daant dekhta hoon"... with things already going haywire... I felt like retorting "main bhi saala paitees saal se daant dekhta hoon"... so what if I have seen only mine!... with pain, swelling & frustration all over my face he started looking inside my mouth ... humming some filmy song... which I heard like ..."कहते सुनते दाँतों ही दाँतों में प्यार हो जाएगा"... he quietly looked inside my mouth which, I never imagined, was big enough to pass some 13-15 minutes. After taking his own time he listed the problems & imperfections inside... I started getting a feeling that he was trying to see his world inside my mouth just like 'Yashoda maiyya saw the whole universe inside the mouth of baal Krishna' ... observing for some 13 minutes he asked me to come to his table. Suddenly I realised that I had probably hit upon the 'R.K. Laxman of Dentists'... the man was actually an engineer under the garb of a dentist... who had a knack for sketching 'everything' and complimenting the sketches with his surprising one-liners!... he reproduced my lower jaw on a piece of paper. The dark portion is the 'site' and another molar is already missing from the action.

He started frightening me saying "एक दाढ़ निकलना handicapped होने बरोबर है... तुम्हारा तो एक पहले ही गया हुआ है"... I argued " फिर मुझे आज तक कोई सरकारी नौकरी में physically-handicapped वाला reservation क्यों नहीं मिला है?"... he probably had no answer to my child-like logic!... he continued that it was not possible for anybody to eat without a Molar... I confirmed him that I have been successfully doing that for the last 9 years... he verified "अरे तुम सामने वाला दाँतों से खा रहे हो क्या ? "... I got worried thinking "ये गैर-कानूनी है क्या?" he himself 'clarified'.. " अरे सामने वाला दांत तो smile करने के वास्ते होता है ... तुम तो दाँतों का एकदम misuse कर रहे हो !" .... my swollen mouth gaped further... he continued..."we'll have to do a major Root Canal Treatment (RCT) in that broken Molar"... use of words 'major' & 'canal' made me imagine the Indira Gandhi Canal which was constructed to feed Sutlej River water from Punjab to desert in Rajasthan. He snatched his pen & paper and sketched the procedure... "we'll first clean the interior walls of the broken tooth...then will drill from the intact side... it will be followed by reinforcement by a titanium screw... which will be filled-up by white cement and then the vacant space owing to the missing molar will be bridged with a foundation of adjacent teeth!"

... hoooof!... for a moment I thought he was discussing about some construction site of L&T... I was myself ready with a sketch this time... in my mind though!

After a couple of sittings, I hesitatingly asked, "सर, पैसा कितना हो जाएगा ?"... after a lot of hmmm.... ummm... taking into consideration my Malaysia trip he said... "RCT will be Rs. 5000, Caps will cost you Rs. 3000 for a metal cap or Rs. 6000 for a ceramic cap... an implant for the lost molar will cost an additional Rs. 15000"... using simple arithematic I murmured ... "it would be around Rs. 36000!!"... I was suddenly reminded of a documentary on Animal Planet where they had claimed that a 100 gms of Zambian Ivory cost around Rs. 25000... and many elephants were getting poached every year for their tusks.... out of obvious anxiety, I whispered "Sir, my one tooth is getting costlier than ivory, hopefully they'll not poach me the moment I leave your clinic!!"... he was ready with another one-liner "अरे तेरे दांत का क्या करेंगे वो लोग ... उसमें तो पहले ही carving की हुई है!"... he probably referred to the cavity!... he then offered to add a sparkle to my smile by fixing a semi-precious stone on one of the front teeth... I had to get agitated considering the cost..... he again snatched his pen & paper and offered to improve my smile... this time I genuinely thought he was actually an Engineer in the garb of a Dentist... he was ready with his Engineering Drawing - using light & Total Internal Reflection. He explained how, when a ray of light will enter my open mouth... and after hitting all the metal caps at the ends of jaws... will create an aura like illumination in the centre of the mouth which will burst-out with my smile !!...

I was simply intrigued by his understanding of the Science of Light ??... stunned, I asked... "is this really possible Doctor?".... "hehehe... the same principle is used in optical fibres"... he kind of corroborated his suggestion... the cost attached was still exorbitant... I suggested him to put it on hold till I accumulate some more money or my brother remits it through Western Union...

... the episode finally came to an end, he has advised me not to quote the expenses as there are chances that Income-tax sleuths might be after me!... as we decided to part ways... Dr Shah reminded " मिलते रहना"... we smiled looking at each other ... just like Shah Rukh Khan & Anushka Sharma smiled at each other in the climax of 'Rab Ne bana Di Jodi'... both accepting "मुझको तुझमें रब दिखता है".... I think its gonna be a never-ending relationship... not because we found 'Rab' in each other... probably because I still have 27 natural teeth inside my mouth!

मेवों की मनुहार

This is a post dedicated to my wife. As most of you know by now, I am from a highly conservative & a traditional family. Living in a joint family, Me & Wife don't even get a chance to talk to each other in presence of other family members. This Deepawali, while trying to burst an Agarbatti-timed-Sootli Bomb in our living room, I annoyed my wife inadvertently. She wasn't infuriated on my attempt at bursting the Bomb right in the Living Room... rather she got upset as the Bomb turned out to be 'Phussi-Bomb'...this yet again reinforced her 7 yr-old opinion about me… “तुमसे कुछ नहीं हो सकता”… she has quite frequently used this statement - at times directly, at times under the garb of some other relatively polite or wild words. As already told, we cannot look into each others eyes while in home, taking the advantage of Deepawali I tried using the Fruits & Dry-Fruits 'presented' (under coercion) to me by some Shri Preetam Lal Soni, as metaphors. Embarrassed to even tell her, I am posting it here

मेवों की मनुहार

ज़रा सी बात थी , दिवाली की रात थी

उफ़! ये दाग मैं उम्र भर नहीं धो सकता!

अपने आंसुओँ से ही काजू नमकीन हो गया
पिस्ता ग़म में दिनों-दिन पिसता जा रहा
अंजीर ने पेट में मार लिया खंजर
बादाम का भी लगभग दम निकला जा रहा
इक बार बस नज़र भर के देख लो
सब दूध में कूद जायेंगे
... ग़र तुम मिल्क-शेक लो।
मुझसे भी ज़्यादा शायद तुमसे प्यार करते हैं

Overheard a discussion among Eunuchs, waiting for a Dadar bound train at Borivili Railway Station... as generally observed, this lot is mostly up-to-date with what's happening around the country (lately...around the world!), be it Politics, Economy, Corporate affairs, Religion, Peace, Science & Technology.... Bollywood, Fashion and what not!... this community is most famous for hitting below the belt, generally ...but.... as the discussion got 'informative & interesting', I missed a few trains... the main participants included Kammo, Pappi, Dilruba & Chandni ... here are the excerpts :

Pappi : ae Ruby (Dilruba) ... wo aajkal Big Baas dekhti hai tu... kitta achha kar rahe hain naa re wo log...
Kammo : Achha... kya achcha kar rahe hai ri... tere ko kya achcha lag gaya usmein... poore time wo Rahul ek-ek laundi ke peechhe laga rahta hai... kya achha karr rahe ye log?
Pappi : ae...e....e.... wo log ek- ek ko nikaal nikaal ke kitta achha kar rahe hain re... saari gandagi ghar ke bahar karte ja rahe hain...
Dilruba : ae... to tere ko woi achha lag gaya .... tu bhi kamaal hai... Faizabad se bumbai aa ke tere ko yei achha lagne ka tha kya?
Pappi : arre...e... Ruby tere bheje main shaadi... bachcha...khatna...phitna... is ke siwa kuchh ghusta hai kya kabhi?
Chandni : arre tu dhande ko beech mein kyun laati re Pappi... usi ki to roti khate na apan.. usi ke waaste mein Main Guntur se idhar bumbai aai na!
Pappi : arre..e.... usi ki khatir to main aur Kammo bhi Nagpur se bumbai aa ke rukke na re... par main kahti thi..ye Big Baas waale kitna seedha tareeka nikale re Gandagi ghar ke baahar karne ka...
Kammo : haan... wo to tu waajib boli re Pappi... soch.. apan ka desh ek bada sa Big Baas type ghar ho to apan milke kisko kisko baahar karengey?... chalo re nominate kartey hain...
Dilruba : dekh waisa bole toh abhi saari ikonaamy ki waat laga ke rakhe ye log... abhi us din main galti se Gents First class dibbe main chadh gayi to mere toh saare khwab phuss ho gaye re.. wo sab tie laga ke baat karte the ki puri duniya ki ikonaamy ki waat lagi padi hai... bolte they sabka paisa jo jidhar jama kiya.. abhi aadha ho gaya... main bhaag ke Tabassum aapa ke paas gayi wo apney Mutual fund agent ko phone lagai to wo bhi bataya ki uska saade teen laakh abhi do laakh bhi nahin bacha tha... mere toh saare khwaab hi phuss ho gaye...
Chandni : ... haan re... samajh le apan ka desh ek Big Baas ka ghar hai... bole toh apan isko 'Pig Baas' ka ghar maan lein... dekh Pappi ... main bolti hai... ki ye ghar main bahut saare Pig pade huey hain... aur mahul mein bahut baas hai...toh agar tere ko is ghar se ek-ek pig ko baahar karne ko bolun toh tum log kaun logon ko nominate karte?

Kammo : ...dekh mera sabse pehla nomination hoga.....

Investment Advisors : Ye log saala teen-chaar saal pahle aa ke Tabassum aapa ko bole tumhare 3 laakh rupaye do... 2-3 saal mein double karke dengey... hum log ikonaamy ka bahut analysis kiya hain... aur purane 5 saal mein logon ka paisa itna badh gaya hai... saala teen saal baad paisa utna ka utna hi hai abhi... kya padhai-likhai-analysis kiye ye log re??

Pappi : ... mere ko poochhegi toh mere ko politics ki much-much bilkul jamti nahin, main nominate karegi..

Mamta Banerjee : ... wo dekh Singur mein faltu lafda kari na wo... usko kuchh maloom nahin aur dharna-andolan kar di.... logon ko udhar naukri nahin... khane ko roti nahin... dekh Singur-Midnapore se log hamare dhande mein aaye toh idhar kitna competition badhega... Mamta udhar andolan karegi to idhar hamare roti ke vaande hotey... tu kisko baahar phekengi Chandni ?

Pappi : .... dekh Ruby... mujhey poochhegi toh mera... raat 10 baje TV phodney ka man karta hai ... saala din bhar dhandha kar ke ghar ko aati hai toh ye saare channels pe Murder-birder karke rakhtey hain...
5. Crime Reports & Breaking News : ... dekh ye log dus baje baad crime... murder... aisa glamour daal ke dikhaatey na... ki Chhumman us din zid pakdi ki wo 'ye' imaandaari ka dhandha chhod ke yahi sab karegi.... bolti hai waisa bhi wo daadhi waala halkat screen mein se apne munh pe aake poochhta hai "... ye sab jo murder... loot... rape ho raha hai iska zimmedaar kaun hai... kya aapne apne aap se ye kabhi poochha hai?..".... to mujhe ek baar to yahi feeling aati hai ki main hi shayad ye sab ke liye jummewaar hai... jab bina kar ke itni badnaami ho rahi hai ... to ye sab karke hi main famous ho jayegi!... bolti hai... kabhi Mahesh Bhatt dekha to Emraan Hashmi ki jagah chance ban sakta hai...

... main bhi sochti hai ki wo kabhi kabhi theek sochti hai... dekh Ruby.. ye log jo Breaking News.... Breaking News karke din bhar dikhatey naa... mera dil TV break karne ka karta re... jo subah 8 baje News break hui ... usko raat 10 baje tak Breaking News karke dikhatey re... dekh Chandni tu bhi manegi... Gauna ho kar ladki waapas aayi toh hum log apna neng maangne ko nahin jaate... purani hui bolke... par ye log ke dhandhey mein koi imaan-dharam baaki bacha nahin lagta... tereko maloom Breaking News mein us din dikha rahe they "Debojeet Big Boss se Baahar hua"... ek din toh Breaking News mein dikhaya "Sooar ke bachchon ko Kutiya paal rahi hai".... aisey dekhe toh Chhumman ko bhi Bilqis aapa paali hai... ye Breaking News hui kya.. bol Kammo?

Himesh Reshammiya :... dekh... waisey toh main Himmesh ko bahut maanti hai... wo hum logon ko kitna 'maal' deta hai aajkal... uskey gaane yaad karne ko kitney easy padte re.... ek word ko hi solah baar repeat kiya toh aadha gaana ho jaata hai... dekh tann nnn....nnna nnnnna naaa.... Pappi : phir tu usko baahar kyun karti hai?
Kammo : ... dekh mere ko uski acting se problem hai... kabhi acting karta hai... kabhi nahin... abhi tak pata nahin chala... wo Sa Re Ga Ma Pa mein..... excellent, fantastic, mindblowing tak hi theek hai re... uskey aagey wo acting karta hai toh Real lagne lagta hai re... aisi acting ka kya faayda.. bol.... ae...Chandni kab se munh sil ke baithee tu... bol na?

Chandni : ...ae... dekh main toh abhi bahut pareshan chal rahi hai... mere ko Dubai jaane ke liye Passport banwaane ka hai... par Raashan Card banwaane mein hi kitna problem kar rahe ye log...
7. Sarkaari Babu : ... dekh ye log kitna corruption kar rahe hain... baat baat par paisa maangte re ye log... humko bhi peechhey chhodey re ye log... abhi main Raashan card ke liye BMC gayi to mera faarm bharne ke sau rupaye manga wo Babulal... Naam, Pataa, Baap ka Naam sab sahi batai... 'Sex' poochha toh mera bheja out ho gaya... main boli faarm bharney ke sau rupaye dee phir bhi faaltu baat karta hai... main halla macha dee...toh wo paas waala Mangtu Raam bola...arrey ye faarm main bharna padta hai... Sex bole toh Male ya female... main boli mere ko ispe doubt aata hai...dono lik doh... toh Babulal sau rupaye aur le liya... main boli na ye log baat baat pe paisa mangtey hain... sau sau rupaye mein ye log Male Female kar rahe hain... hum log faaltu itna paisa 'kharcha' karte re...

Kammo : Main Bandra utroongi... wo Sachin 12000 run banaya na... uska neng abhi bachta hai... Anjali aaj bulai thi.. aur tu kidhar Pappi?
Pappi :... dekh...main pahle Dadar jayegi.. wo Raj ko Police chhod di na.. wo kuchh toh dega... dekh hum log sab doosre states se aaye hain phir bhi wo hum log ko kabhi 'nakko' nahin bola... tu kidhar nikal rahi Ruby?
Dilruba : ... main Juhu ja rahi hoon... Jeetuji ke ghar... wo Tushar ki picture Golmaal Returns hit hui na... Ekta, Jeetuji kuchh toh dengey... main pichhli baar bhi boli thi jab 'Shootout at Lokhandwala' hit hui thi... Tushar ko lead role nahin dogey to picture chal jayegi... is baar goonga kar diye to aur badi hit ho gayi!.... tu kahan ja rahi Chandni?
Chandni : .... main Himesh ke ghar ja rahi hoon... Andheri utroongi...
Kammo : ...par Himesh ke ghar kyun... Karzzz toh flop gayi na re?
Chandni : ....arrey ye to duniya ko maloom na... Himesh to abhi bhi samajh raha hai ki Karzzz supper-dupper hit ho gayi hai....

These are some of the verses scribed sometime in Feb'06... trying to depict the onset of Summer in India. This particular season falls between Spring (Basant) & Summer (Greeshm). Its an attempt to visualize and present the routine in an Indian Village and the changes in surroundings with the passage of Spring.

Its usually the season when school going children start preparing for their Final Exams.....its the season when the Water-levels in natural sources start drying-up... there are frequent power-cuts in villages... and married daughters start planning visits to their Parents (as Summer vacations of the kids are about to start)... Guddu, Kusum, Bhola etc are only the Metaphors!... as usual, Google is not supporting Hindi Language & fonts completely, please bear with some spelling errors...

पतझड़ के टुकड़े

हवा खुश्क, धूप गुनगुना रही है
बसंत का यौवन अब ढलता जा रहा है

खेतों की हरियाली उतरती जा रही है
पलाश सुर्ख हो इतरा रहा है

दिन खिंचते जा रहे हैं अब दिनोदिन
दोपहर का सन्नाटा पैर पसरा रहा है

गुड्डू किताबों के पन्ने पलटता है
परीक्षा का खौफ नज़दीक आ रहा है

कुएं की लम्बी रस्सी शहर से आ गई
पानी कुसुम से दूर हुआ जा रहा है

शामों का 'सरकारी अँधेरा' बढ़ने लगा है
भोला लालटेन चमका रहा है

माँ-बाप की आँखें भी अब पथराने लगी हैं
बेटी को पीहर से बुलावा आ रहा है

Ganpati Bappa Morya...

This year I got a chance to attend the famous 'Ganpati Visarjan' at the Girgaum Chaupati, Mumbai. The festival is now famous world over for its fervor, devotion and involvement. Everybody - right from the actual devotees to Celebrities to Film Stars to Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to various Political Parties to 'Bhai-log' to Street vendors to Eunuchs... wants his share of the pies of Blessings and Business. Everything aside, the 9 day long festival does have a distinct charm to it. People do rise above caste & creed to be a part of the festivities. The Drummers (Nagada Players) are mostly Muslims, the lorry drivers who drive the Ganesha Idols all the way from Pandaals to the beach for immersion are many a times Sikhs, the person announcing the arrivals of Ganpati from around the city with a high dose of melodrama atop a BMC tower, was a Christian. You rarely find a blend of so many Indian Religions and Sects joining a Religious Celebration with so much dedication.... that's probably how the late Bal Gangadhar Tilak must have planned it to be. To an extent, the festival has still been able to retain its Character. But, as all things are destined to, the Character has also been changing with times - for good & for bad. One thing is for sure, it’s certainly getting more and more commercialised. Almost all big & small pandaals are having sponsors ranging from the local Chaat-waala to big consumer brands. You will find a banner of 'Lachchu Mithai & Chaat Pakodi' alongside that of Cadburys, a banner of 'Dhamaka' Gutka alongside that of Wrigley's Double Mint Gum plus a banner mentioning that 'All the activities of this Pandaal are being telecast Live on CNN (Read it Chembur News Network)' . . But the promotional banners inside & outside the pandaals make for an interesting read while you are queued-up, sometimes, for 4-5 hours to have a darshan of your favorite Elephant-God. The discussions among the devotees, ahead & behind you in the queue, make up for the rest. Off late many a movie stars are thronging various pandaals for 'Blessings' from Ganpati. They will, however, bow for 5 seconds and then wave to hoards of fans for 25 minutes, remember all this is telecast live on CNN!... then there are some not-so-famous TV Stars. You get to know he/ she is a certain star the moment they start waving at the crowd, all by themselves.

Then there are some sidekicks of Political leaders who will move into a pandaal with their group of supporters and 'invite' some of the local & national TV Channels for an interview. The reporter, in all her humility, will start interviewing with an obvious question - What did you pray for... to Ganpati Bappa?... Depending on his political party, the 'Leader' in question will start with - The COUNTRY is facing a huge crisis in Bihar, owing to Floods & incessant rains and our Government in Bihar is putting in all possible efforts for the poor people of Bihar and I have prayed to Ganpati to protect OUR poor people from such Natural calamities.

Imagine all this happening at some Ganpati Pandaal somewhere in Ghatkopar. Next Question - What did u request for your own self?... and the 'leader' will reply... I want that MY people should not suffer because of the unfriendly policies of Central Government; I want that MY people should remain hale & healthy... I don’t want anything for myself.... this is selflessness to extreme!!... An outburst of slogans like Degu Bhai Patil zindabad... Aapla manoos Degu Bhai... amidst some chants of 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' from his supporters. Get ready for a group of Eunuchs in Pandaal, Dressed up & made up as if attending a marriage, the kamlas, Rekhas, Hemas & Madhuris, while in queue and having Darshans, will make a statement on everything big and small. You may not get where their discussion is heading to but it will be interspersed with "Ae..e... dhakka kaiko deta hai"...Peechhla baar main Ganpati mein wo georgette saari lee thi na, wo abhi tak sambhaal ke rakkhi hoon, ek baar koi saari Ganpati mein pahin kar aaye to wo dharam-karam ka saari hota na re Hema... Ae...e dhakka kaiko deta hai.... I can have a separate post on conversations between Eunuchs, if public demands.

Then there are some old fellows who get into the queue probably to admonish the 'young generation' and blame everything to God. Even Ganpati is not spared. Even mismanagement in Pandaals will be blamed on Ganpati. "Kya bolega bhau, Oopar waala jaisa chala raha hai duniya waisa chal raha hai"... After repeated blames even I am forced to think WHY the things are happening the way they are?... Why the petroleum prices are rising? - May be God wills that there should be less Pollution on the Roads. Why is there so much Violence in Movies? - May be God wills that we should see the and satisfy our appetite for Violence in Movies and not indulge ourselves in the same. Why is Salman Khan not getting married? - May be God wants to let some of our Parents know & accept that Celibacy has its own advantages!!!

While in queue, a whole variety of questions keep coming to my mind... then I reach in front of the Ganpati Idol... mesmerised by the Idol, decoration and atmosphere… a question hits - Why one of the heaviest Gods has chosen one of the smallest animal (a mouse) to ride on? - May be Ganpati wants to put across - if there is a belief and confidence we can pull-off a lot heavier and bigger things in life which initially seem way beyond our abilities.

Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhcha varshi lavkar ya!...
