I've come to the realization that, although it is way cool, I just don't enjoy knitting with the Habu Shosenshi Paper. I should have realized it when my Shippo scarf was left lingering so long.

I'm really not that far in--I could abort, but somehow I don't want to do that. With buttons. It has pockets. It's SKIF-y.

I like it, but it's perhaps a bit too much like some of the previous patterns to have much of an effect on me at the moment. Good thing, I'm still trying to finish Neptune and I really want to knit Martha next.

PS--take a look at the updated SKIF website. There are lots of great new pics of their RTW sweaters--even swatches of their yarn combinations. Also, our own Donni got a shout out on the pattern page! Woohoo!

Seriously, check it out, you're going to flip. I think "Partisan" is my favorite, but it's hard to say. Scoobydoo long, is pretty kewl, too.

Pls, SKIFfies, Can we haz teh pattrns nao?

An absence of colour. Deep, dark blackness cloaked in fantasy and romanticism. Almost haunting. Definitely edgy.

The process:
When I first started this project, I truly believed it would fly off the needles – basic pattern, lovely wool, some time to actually sit and knit. No problem I thought. Quick. Mindless. Simple.
I’d even planned how it would be worn: with dark jeans tucked into long suede boots. Casual. Elegant. Chic.

Enter the dark side.

The side where knitting time is limited as real life sets in and takes over. Where unique designs are mighty different to how they initially appear and severe modifications are called for. As we know, SKIF encourage a different type of knitting, but really, there’s a fine line between creativity and downright ridiculous [and while others have managed to stay within the confines, I’m not that confident]. A botched first attempt a few months ago added to the self doubt and let’s just say it got a little edgy over here for a while.
Then, suddenly, it all fell into place and the result is a wonderful, lightweight garment that has been worn almost every day since it’s completion.

The knitting:
This knit up reasonably fast. The pattern, at a glance, is easy to follow, although this changes somewhat as you move through it. I made a decision early on to modify the instructions, using the SKIF photo as a guide: I reversed the front and back sections, leaving the plain side at the back [which I knit from the bottom up]. The front was knit separately, top down, to accommodate the seam. I also deleted the exposed seams, freeform knitting style and buttons.

The yarn:
STR medium-weight in Black Onyx, lends itself to the casual, organic nature of SKIF designs and looks fantastic in reverse stocking stitch. I’d love to see this in Habu Lamb Linen, Tsumugi Silk or a Kakishibu Ramie/Extra fine merino mix – perhaps with some Silk Stainless Steel thrown in.

The verdict:

A lovely textural piece that is lightweight and fluid. I've worn it layered over a fine merino knit and adore the way it falls away from the body without being baggy. The neckline is incredibly soft and skims gently across the collarbone - total love!

I can't count.
Call it a testament to the level of education we receive here in the States, but somehow I managed to get past Algebra III and deep into Statistics without being able to count properly.

Some how the instructions "CO 104 sts" equals (in my little brain) "CO 102 sts"

Yeah.
Oh, just wait, it gets better...

I bound off the appropriate number of stitches for the armscye, knit until I needed to evenly divide the stitches for the neck shaping, worked the appropriate number of stitches (which should be half the total number of stitches), went to place the remaining stitches (which should also, coincidentally, be half the total number of stitches) on a stitch holder and....

Not half. (?)
Not evenly divided. (??)
41 stitches (Wha'???)

Hmm. Let's recount the number of stitches worked. Perhaps we got a tad overzealous. We are enjoying this knitting experience so much we simply lost track of the number of stitches worked. Let's count again.

Not half. (?)
Not evenly divided. (??)
42 stitches (Wha'???)

Somewhere in the 14½ inches of straight knitting required to get to the armscye, I managed to dwindle 102 stitches to 95....

Good times right?
Oh, just wait, it gets better...

Then, as I was counting and recounting, as I desperately tried to make sense of the madness, in a pivotal moment, I remembered.

The moment was akin to the remembrance Mrs. Dalloway experiences as the scent of fresh flowers envelops her while shopping and she is instantly transported to the summer evening parties in the days of her youth.

It was that profound. But, instead of scent acting as the catalyst, I believe texture was the agent.

Deep in the cockles of my little brain, there is a slightly dusty and battered memory of "customizing" my Zena (Warrior Princess) with some waist shaping.

Here's the right side:

I tried to use only yarn from my stash-beast, but it was too difficult. If I start a new knit I have to have fresh-out-of-the-bag yarn to go with it.

Some of the yarns are:
A lovely sport weight, chocolate merino-camel blend I picked up at O.F.F.F.
There is some Fleece Artist Flaxen in Midnight (my heavens I love this yarn).
Alpaca 1 (that's royal alpaca baby) in Raisin by Catherine Lowe.
Both the alpaca and flaxen were purchaed at my LYS, where I work.
I also tried to "go with the flow" by frogging a custom design and adding it in. It was a tunic made from a mixture of Habu Tsumugi Silk A-1 (color 54) and two colors of Bamboo XS-45 (Wine and Charcoal). I was heartbroken when I lost my instructions to my tunic and it just seemed like too much chaos to reverse-engineer what I had. So ripit ripit ripit...
In the very beginning you can see I had some Blue Moon Fibers Silk Thread in a rest-in-peace color: Shibui. See it here on the cast-on:

I really liked this colorway. It's a combination of demure beige, tramp-red, and sophisticated charcoal. But in this combination it looks red, white, and blue. I think it will make it back in though. Somewhere on the sleeve maybe?

I was really proud of that combination of Habu yarn. It felt like I discovered how well chocolate and peanut butter go together. It does feel good to reknit the yarn in combination with other yarns. What would you consider the new combination? Perhaps peanut butter cup icecream?

Better. Much, much better. Perfect I would say. A simple piece that gently falls away from the body, without being oversized or baggy.

I could’ve shown the entire front [and back] but it really needs sleeves to make it a whole. İ have completed the first sleeve, and am on the BODY. İ'm so excited!!! For those of you thinking about knitting her, 24 inch Addis are working just fine for me. (İ can't find the inch symbol on this European keyboard to save my life!!!) İ don't have a camera handy, but will try to post again within the next few days.

Martha, that is...

Phew!

I've been a very, very bad SKIF fan. BUT, I'm finally here. This is a close-up of my Martha swatch. In the tradition of SKIF, I've tried to incorporate "sewing thread" into my yarn to make it look like the SKIF sweaters sold in boutiques and that I see at market on those Deep South Fibers girls.

I got very lucky. I was in my friendly Hancock's Fabric store on Sunday, and lo and behold, the Maxi Lock sewing thread was on sale for $1.77/spool, 3000 yds. per spool! (I haven't been able to see this swatch in real life as well as I can in this photo!) So, I bought two shades of orange and two shades of my favorite, chartreuse/lime green, because I knew I would have SOMETHING at home to put it with for another SKIF, maybe the next one, CAT.

I got home with my thread, and put the oranges with some Schaeffer Anne that I bought in Reno a couple of weeks ago. It's perfect!!! I'm going to knit this sweater to and from Turkey, where I'm going to see my Mom and siblings. Here is a photo of a small pile of "Martha" yarn.
I've got only one Martha pattern left. However, I've ordered more, and they're on the way! I won't be able to fill any more orders until I get back from the homeland on the 28th. Specifically, I think the elasticity of wool would work well with its sideways construction.

It seems to me that silk, bamboo, cotton, or linen might stretch in an unflattering manner, but something really springy like a couple of strands of wool sock yarn would be terrific, particularly, handpainted yarns (maybe one solid and one variegated) to play up the unusual directionality of the piece.

Does anyone have differing thoughts on what fibers would be appropriate?

But, I'm roughly 6" into the front of my Neptune/Button Back, and really in love with the way the yarns are coming together. The cotton nerimaki slub, which was a bit of a whim purchase at Habu's stall at the 2007 Stitches East in Baltimore, MD, has become, probably, my favorite yarn in this mix. You can see it in this photo as the lighter brown/red/mauve stitches in the center of the swatch. The thicker bits add textural interest.

I remain a bit ambivalent about how the charcoal Tsumugi silk looks worked in with the other colors (it's most clearly visible in this photo on the far left). I think its colors may be too cold compared to the other colors of yarn I'm using. I just remind myself that it's easy to overanalyze a piece this size. When it's a full garment, I think the whole will be greater than the sum of its parts.

I thought I would post a photo (sorry about the quality) of the front, as there is no representation of the front on the pattern. It was a bit bland, so I made a patch pocket & used one of the Skif buttons on it. I also did a hybrid Neptune/Button Back by sewing a bit of the way down the back & using 2 buttons. I have mixed feelings about the finished product. It's not all that flattering on me, but very cozy, more like wearing a big sweatshirt. I chose an organic cotton that is a bit chunky, so if I do this sweater again, I will use a lighter weight yarn & definitely mix it up a bit more with some other yarns, as Skif suggests. I'm not sure I'm all that crazy about wearing the purl side as the outside, but then you wouldn't have the cool roll in the back. I love the idea of really taking a design & making it your own, as Skif encourages. I think the Habu yarns would have been more appropriate, even Noro, maybe. Happy knitting! -- Cara

I'm very happy with the results.

Recall that I knit this with 2 strands of Habu A-33 Merino (one black, one a light olive) and one strand of Habu Silk Mohair hand-dyed Kasuri in green. The resulting fabric is very open and drapey, but the mohair makes it less transparent and gives it some body.

I made a few changes to the pattern:

After several attempts, I gave up trying to make the collar by picking up the stitches on each side. It just looked messy. I had even knitted several inches of the back before deciding to rip back and simply re-knit the back of the collar as a separate flap and then seam the three parts together later.

I did not use the larger needle on the sleeves, as directed, nor did I switch to a smaller needle for the last 4 inches.

I knitted the sleeves with the knit side, rather than the purl side called for in the pattern.
Also, I knitted the sleeves flat because I my circs weren't flexible enough to magic loop and I wasn't into DPNs.

The sides and sleeves were joined with invisible seams using a sportweight yarn from the stash that had similar colors.

As previously mentioned here, the pattern was a bit of a challenge given the errors and the quirky wording, but it was well worth the effort.

I truly love Zena. It is the perfect foil for the Habu yarns, as many of us suspected.

I had planned to knit Neptune using the A-33 and silk mohair with a strand of Shosenshi Paper, but I'm thinking that combination might be more appropriate with Jess. The drape isn't quite what I want. My gauge is tight, but I don't think I want to go up a needle size because I'm not convinced I'll like the resulting fabric. I'll probably just modify the pattern to support this gauge (and, at the same time, make the sweater somewhat smaller).

I am responsible for helping write the new Skif Hand Knit patterns. We are so excited about this adventure. Skif sweaters are so much fun to wear. I would like to ask you to tell me any problems you are encountering with these patterns and I will do my best to help. We tried to keep the patterns very easy to read and would like your imput.

We didn't even have to ask! Thanks, ShopKnits!

I hope everyone else is having pleasant experiences regarding their corrected patterns.

As to the actual corrections, I glanced through Zena and it appears several numbers have changed, but I'm too far along to bother analyzing it. At least, I'll have the presumably correct numbers for Neptune.

As far as I can see, there were no updates to the instructions for clarity, which is too bad.

I think we can all agree--SKIF designs are awesome; SKIF patterns, not so much.

But, at least they're getting better. Thanks, SKIF!

I got my shipment of corrected patterns Monday. I'm back on my swatching! I've got some laceweight hand-dyed alpaca that I'm going to hold with some mercerized cotton this time, since I didn't like my first swatch. Heck. Maybe I'll just knit a bunch of SKIFs, all the while trying different combinations! I don't have the Mateo and Bellagio yet...the Bellagio is men's pullover, the Mateo is the cardigan.

She alerts us to the following:

FYI…..Skif patterns have been corrected and are being distributed to retailers today. Folks are encouraged to re-visit their LYS or on-line source for a corrected copy of the pattern(s). Corrected versions will not include the hardware.

Also, she mentioned that there are two new SKIF patterns: Mateo, a cardigan, and Bellagio, a man's pullover. Hmmm...with the name "Mateo", perhaps both are men's patterns.

Lastly, Donna would like to join our KAL! She will bring along some insider knowledge and be a direct source of contact with the designer. Welcome, Donna!
