'Nur Kasih' hits cinemas

When a few entertainment journalists generated a boycott on Remy Ishak recently over something he said, the actor was left baffled and confused. The incident happened after Remy said something along the line, "entertainment reporters do not do their homework." And the next thing Remy know, he was on the boycott list.

"It was all a miscommunication and I never expected things would turn out this way. I had no intention to incur the wrath of the reporters. I am sure I can explain myself if only I'm given the chance," said Remy after the preview of Nur Kasih The Movie at KLCC recently.

According to Remy, he has always enjoyed a good rapport with most entertainment journalists but somehow this time around, he was a bit unlucky when the two female journalists miscontrued what he said.

"I've made a public apology and I want to say it again that I am very sorry for what had happened. Im very humbled by the incident and I promise it will never happen again," said the Malacca-born who earned his popularity through the TV3 series, Nur Kasih, directed by Kabir Bhatia in 2009.

Remy who was first introduced by indie film director Osman Ali in 2006, hope to put the sad episode behind him and move on. He will be busy making promotion rounds of Nur Kasih The Movie which will hit the cinemas on May 19.

"Nur Kasih The Movie should please a lot of cinema goers and fan ofNur Kasih the TV series s it has a lot of winning elements.

There is a few twists here and there but basically it is family-oriented movie," said Remy whose real name is Zalimei Mohammad Bin Ishak.

The 32-year-old actor, who is reputed to enjoy a fling with the leading actress of the movie, Tiz Zaqyah, described Nur Kasih The Movie as "the best thing that ever happened to his acting career so far."

"As for Tiz (pictured above), we are as close as any good friends can be. We are always photographed together because we are invited to the same function. I can't predict what the future holds for us but I dont deny we enjoy a good chemistry on and off screen. Only God knows what happens next," said the actor who used to work as a bell boy at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel before finding his way to be an actor.

In fact, many would be surprised to know this handsome hunk who is dubbed as the answer to 'Malayasian Hero' had done many odd jobs before he got the first taste of the glamour world.

His resume mentioned that Remy was just a simple village boy who used to be a fishmonger, rubber tapper, a labourer doing landscape planting trees and building bridges and a waiter at a 5-star hotel. Remy, however, took the bold way out by leaving his family to start a challenging life in Kuala Lumpur when he was 18.

However, a prominent part in the movie, Anak Halal in 2007 changed Remy's destiny and soon he became the new heart throb of the Malay movie world.

For Remy who has acted in movies like Anak Halal, Evolusi KL Drift 2and Cun, fame has given him more than what he bargained for.

"Im happy with fame comes money and job offers but the gossips are really killing me," said the actor who has been linked with several secelbrities like Ummi Nazeera, Maya Karin and the latest is Tiz Zaqyah.

How to Detect Their Liar

STEPS

1
Establish a base line. A base line is what someone acts like when they are not lying. You have to get a base line before you proceed with anything. Imagine you have a itch on your nose ever since you got out of bed. Someone might think you are hiding something because you scratch your nose when answering a question, when really you've been scratching your nose all day. To establish a baseline, you need to see the person when they aren't lying. Try asking what their name is, and what they do for a living. If any of the signs below pop up when you know they're telling the truth, then those signs aren't indicative of lying.

Learn to recognize deflections. Usually when people are lying, they will tell stories that are true but are deliberately aimed at not answering the question you asked. If a person responds to the question "Did you ever hit your wife?" with an answer such as "I love my wife, why would I do that?", the suspect is technically telling a truth, but they are avoiding answering your original question, which usually means they're lying.

Notice the behavior of other body parts. Watch their hands, arms and legs, which tend to be limited, stiff, and self-directed when the person is lying. Their hands may touch their face, ear, or the back of the neck. These are, however, a sign of nervousness, not a sign of deceit. They might not necessarily be nervous because they're lying.

Look out for microexpressions. Microexpressions are facial expressions that flash on a person's face for a fraction of a second and reveal the person's true emotion underneath their facade. Some people may be naturally sensitive to them, but almost anybody can easily train to be able to detect microexpressions. Typically, in a person who is lying, their microexpression will exhibit the emotion of distress, characterized by the eyebrows being drawn upwards towards the middle of the forehead (sometimes causing short lines to appear across the forehead skin).

Check for sweating. People tend to sweat more when they lie. (However, some people may sweat a lot more during nervousness/shyness.) But this is not always a reliable indication of lying.

Mind exaggerated details. See if they are telling you too much, like "My mom is living in France, isn't it nice there? Don't you like the Eiffel tower? It's so clean there." Too many details may tip you off to their desperation to get you to believe them.

Notice the person's eye movements. Contrary to popular belief, a liar does not always avoid eye contact. Humans naturally break eye contact and look at non-moving objects to help them focus and remember. Liars may deliberately make eye contact to seem more sincere. You can usually tell if a person is remembering something or making something up based on their eye movements. When someone is remembering details, their eyes move to the right (your right). When someone is making something up, their eyes move to the left. It's usually reversed for lefties.

Be aware of their emotional responses
- Timing and duration tends to be off when someone is lying. If you ask someone a question and they respond directly after the question, there is a chance that the person is lying. This can be because they have rehearsed the answer, or they're already thinking about the answer just to get it over with and move forward.
- Pay close attention to the person's reaction to your questions. A liar will often feel uncomfortable and turn their head or body away, or even subconsciously put an object between the two of you. Also, while an innocent person would go on the offensive (usually responding with anger, which will usually be revealed in a microexpression directly after you say you don't believe them), a guilty person will often go immediately on the defensive (usually by saying something to reassure their facts, such as deflections).

Listen for a subtle delay in responses to questions. An honest answer comes quickly from memory. Lies require a quick mental review of what they have told others to avoid inconsistency and to make up new details as needed. However, when people look up to remember things, it does not necessarily mean that they are lying.

Be conscious of their usage of words. Verbal expression can give many clues as to whether a person is lying, such as:

Using/repeating your own exact words when answering a question
Avoiding use of contractions
Vocal pitch rising
Avoiding direct statements or answers (deflections)
Speaking excessively in an effort to convince
Speaking in a monotonous tone, speaking with a jumpy tone, or allowing pitch to rise and fall unnaturally
Leaving out pronouns (he, she, it, etc.)
Speaking in muddled sentences
Using humor and sarcasm to avoid the subject
Allow silence to enter the conversation.
Pausing at an unusual time, such as in the middle of a sentence
If they're lying, they will become uncomfortable if you stare at them for a while with a look of disbelief. If they're telling the truth, they will usually become angry or just frustrated (lips pressed together, brows down, upper eyelid tensed and pulled down to glare).

Change the subject quickly. While an innocent person would be confused by the sudden shift in the conversation and may try to return to the previous subject, a liar will be relieved and welcome the change. You may see the person become more relaxed and less defensive.

Watch his or her throat. A person may constantly be either trying to lubricate their throat when he/she lies by swallowing or clearing their throat to relieve the tension built up. A person's voice can also be a good lie indicator; they may suddenly start talking faster or slower than normal, or their tension may result in a higher-pitched speaking tone.

Follow through. If you have the means, check the validity of what the liar is saying. A skilled liar might give some reason why you shouldn't talk to the person who could confirm or deny a story. Perhaps the liar will imply that the person is particularly favorable towards the liar, or that the person would have little time for you. These are probably lies themselves, so might be worthwhile overcoming your reluctance and to check with the person you've been warned against.

Notice it when the suspect repeats sentences. If the suspect uses almost the exact same words over and over, then it's probably a lie. When a person makes up a lie, he often tries to remember a certain phrase or sentence that sounds convincing. When asked to explain the situation again, the liar will use the very same 'convincing' sentence again.

TIPS

Just because someone exhibits one or more of these signs does not mean they are lying. The above behaviors should be compared to a person's base (normal) behavior whenever possible.
The more you get to know someone, the better you will become at recognizing their thinking style and the better you will become at knowing when they may be straying from the truth. In the ordinary course of events, you will see a consistent pattern of eye movements. If a person breaks their pattern, this may well suggest that they are deviating from the truth, though they may not be lying deliberately. To test the pattern break, ask more questions to try and clarify whether the pattern break was indeed an attempt to tell a lie.
Some of the behaviors of a liar listed above also coincide with those of an extremely shy person, who might not be lying at all.
Some of the behaviors may also occur when somebody is very concentrated on speaking (for example, when the topic is sophisticated or the person is stressed).
Botox or other plastic surgery may also interfere with 'tells' and give false positives.
Some people may have reputations for lying; keep this in mind, but don't let it mask your opinions all the time. You have to take it on a case-by-case basis.
Some people are extremely experienced or even professional liars. He or she has told their made up story so many times that they are actually believable, getting all their days, dates and times down perfectly! Sometimes, you may need to simply accept that you can't catch every lie all the time.
Many of the signs that a person is lying are also signs that they are simply nervous. This can especially be the case if they are uncomfortable with the subject they are talking about.
If they are being accused of something they, they may be a defensive to convince you otherwise. This may seem like they are lying but they are just shocked to be put at the center of attention unexpectedly.
Most people tell the truth most of the time, and will cherish their reputation. Liars will 'sail close to the wind' - they'll artificially bolster their reputation so that they seem more credible or desirable than they actually are.
Train yourself to lie, and well. If you can lie very well, you should be able to tell when others are lying.
A lier might use objects around them to help put detail into their lies, e.g. there might be a pen on the table and then in the story it might include a pen.

WARNINGS

Be careful of how often you appraise others' truthfulness. If you are always looking for lies, people may avoid you.
Remember that eye contact is considered rude in some cultures, so this may explain why they are reluctant to look at you in the eye consistently.
Some people with developmental disabilities like Autism or Asperger's syndrome are very reluctant to make eye contact or do not make eye contact at all. This is a trait of the Autism spectrum and not a sign of dishonesty. Also, some people like to stare at you eye-to-eye.
Forcing a smile is often just an attempt to be polite; don't take this personally. If someone fakes a smile for you, it can also mean that they want to make a good impression on you because they value you as a person and are showing respect.
Someone who is deaf, or hard-of-hearing, may need to watch your mouth instead of your eyes, in order to lipread or better understand what you are saying.

Sirih Junjung telah memainkan peranannya sendiri. Dalam kebanyakan adat budaya, terutamanya semasa masyarakat Melayu mengadakan majlis perkahwinan, ianya sebagai satu kemestian dijadikan barang hantaran pengantin.

Disamping itu juga masyarakat Malaysia kini juga telah memberikan sirih junjung tempat dalam beberapa majlis rasmi negara. Kebiasaannya sirih junjung dalam jumlah tidak kurang dari 10 pahar (sejenis dulang berkaki) akan mengiringi perarakan atau dijadikan penyeri dimajlis tersebut.

Pada zaman dahulu Raja-raja Melayu telah menggunakan sirih junjung sebagai satu alat istiadat pertabalan raja atau sultan, terutamanya di Negeri Kelantan.

Satu perarakan sirih junjung telah diadakan di sekitar bandar sempena majlis tersebut. Bagi penyediaan membuat sirih junjung, biasanya digubah oleh orang yang mahir dalam membuat gubahan barang hantaran pengantin.

Sebanyak 100 helai daun sirih Melayu atau lebih diperlukan. Daun-daun sirih yang segar, lebar lagi cantik diperlukan, disamping peralatan lain seperti gabus yang digunakan sebagai menara, dawai untuk pengikat, jarum penyemat, lidi dan lain-lain yang bersesuaian.

Sirih junjung digubah dengan pelbagai bentuk seperti bangunan atau masjid, juga berbentuk flora mengikut citrarasa penggubah. Bunga-bunga segar seperti mawar, dahlia dan kekwa serta lainnya akan menyerikan lagi gubahan tersebut. Untuk menambah keharuman pada sirih junjung tersebut, pada kebiasaannya wangian akan dibubuhkan seperti bunga rampai atau air mawar.

ambangan sirih junjung merupakan satu gubahan yang unik dan indah. Hasil daya kreatif penyusunan daun-daun sirih yang tersisip rapi mengikut bentuk dan imaginasi pengubahnya.

Biarpun musim berganti zaman berlalu ia tetap menjadi lambang dan kemegahan masyarakat Melayu dalam memartabatkan budaya dan adat istiadatnya.

Dalam kerja mengubah sirih ini beberapa peralatan dan bahan gubahan perlu disediakan terlebih dahulu. Daun-daun sirih yang lebar dan cantik secukupnya. Antara lain bahan-bahannya seperti span, gabus, buah betik muda, empulur pokok pisang, dawai bunga, gelung rotan, tali tangsi, reben, kertas pelilit, kain net, lidi penyapu, kad keras, jarum peniti, raga kecil, dulang, bunga segar atau kering, daun pakis, manik, kapur, pinang, cengkih, gambir dan lain-lain yang difikirkan perlu.

Manakala peralatan yang perlu digunakan ialah pisau, gunting, pemotong dawai, kacip serta mengikut kesesuaian.

Konsep gubahan perlulah direka atau dibentuk terlebih dahulu, menyiapkan tapak atau alas gubahan itu, dengan menghiaskan dulang atau gabus dengan kain atau lain bahan. Kebiasaan reka bentuk diperbuat dari gabus, buah betik muda, empulur pokok pisang, raga kecil, kad keras atau bahan lain seperti pasu bunga kecil dan sebagainya.

Kepelbagaian gubahan sirih junjung mengikut citra rasa penggubah. Daun-daun sirih mula disusun mengikut aturan yang tertentu menyelimuti asas bentuk tersebut. Samada disusun selapis atau tiga lapis dengan menggunting daun-daun sirih itu mengikut saiz tersendiri. Lazimnya daun-daun sirih disusun dengan mengembang dibahagian bawahnya sebagai dataran dan membentuk dibahagian atasnya.

Bunga-bunga segar atau kering disulamkan dicelah atau dicucukkan bahagian kemuncak sebagai jemalanya. Bunga rampai, gambir, pinang dan kapur disorokkan dicelah lipatan daun-daun sirih dibahagian datarannya. Kain net dan manik-manik juga menyulami junjungan sirih itu sebagai hiasan dan menambah seri kecantikannya

Rasulullah SAW bersabda, "Orang yang paling sabar diantara kamu ialah orang yang memaafkan kesalahan orang lain padahal dia berkuasa untuk membalasnya." (HR Baihaqi)

Rasulullah SAW bersabda, "Iman terbagi dua, separuh dalam sabar dan separuh dalam syukur". (HR Al-Baihaqi)

Rasulullah SAW bersabda,"Sungguh beruntung orang yang beriman, karena segala perkara adalah kebajikan. Jika dia mendapatkan kenikmatan, dia bersyukur (dia mendapat pahala kebajikan) dan jika dia ditimpa musibah, dia sabar (dia mendapat pahala kebajikan juga)." (HR. Muslim)

Saiyidina Ali Abu Talib k.a.w pernah bermadah, maksudnya: Jika engkau bersabar, takdir itu berlaku juga ke atas diri mu, tetapi engkau dikurniakan ganjaran pahala. Jika engkau tidak sabar pun, takdir tetap berlaku juga ke atas dirimu dan engkau berdosa.

Dari Ummu Al-Ala', dia berkata : "Rasulullah Shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam menjengukku tatkala aku sedang sakit, lalu baginda berkata. 'Gembirakanlah wahai Ummu Al-Ala'. Sesungguhnya sakitnya orang Muslim itu membuatkan Allah mengampunkan dosa-dosanya, sebagaimana api yang menghilangkan kotoran pada emas dan perak". (HR Abu Daud)

Dari Sa'id bin Abi Waqqash Radhiyallahu anhu, dia berkata. 'Aku pernah bertanya : Wahai Rasulullah, siapakah orang yang paling keras cobaannya ? Beliau menjawab: Para nabi, kemudian orang pilihan dan orang pilihan lagi. Maka seseorang akan diuji menurut agamanya. Apabila agamanya merupakan (agama) yang kuat, maka cobaannya juga berat. Dan, apabila di dalam agamanya ada kelemahan, maka dia akan diuji menurut agamanya. Tidaklah cobaan menyusahkan seorang hamba sehingga ia meninggalkannya berjalan di atas bumi dan tidak ada satu kesalahan pun pada dirinya". (HR Ibnu Majah)

Sabda Rasulullah SAW yang bermaksud : “Sesungguhnya orang mukmin akan menerima tekanan hidup kerana tidak ada satu bencana sama ada kerana terkena duri atau yang lebih besar, tidak juga ketakutan melainkan Allah akan mengangkat darjatnya satu darjat dan menghapuskan satu kesalahan dengan kesabarannya menghadapi bencana dan kesusahan tersebut”. Dari Anas bin Malik, dia berkata. "Aku pernah mendengar Rasulullah Shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam berkata. "Artinya :
Sesungguhnya Allah berfirman. 'Apabila Aku menguji hamba-Ku (dengan kebutaan) pada kedua matanya lalu dia bersabar, maka Aku akan mengganti kedua matanya itu dengan syurga". (HR Bukhari)

Allah berfirman, "Dan bersabarlah kamu, karena sesungguhnya Allah itu bersama orang yang sabar." (Al Anfaal : 46 )

Allah SWT berfirman : "Dan Allah mencintai orang-orang yang sabar." ( Ali Imran : 146)

Rasulullah SAW pernah menggambarkan: "Sesiapa yang mensabar-sabarkan diri (berusaha untuk sabar), maka Allah akan menjadikannya orang yang sabar". (HR. Bukhari)

Why Do We Make Soundcheck. Part Two

Making it easier on junior engineers makes your band sound better.

Earlier today I went over the basic preparations required to make a sound check run smoothly. Now, we’ll get down to the nitty gritty of how you and the house technical staff can best work together to bring your audience a truly memorable and killer show.

Follow the procedure.
The venue engineers will guide you through the process of sound checking, but knowing what’s coming saves time, and demonstrating familiarity with the process provides reassurance to the technical team and the promoters.

The first step involves finding the peak level for each source, so that no matter what happens in the show, the channels won’t overload and will operate in their butter zone for the majority of dynamics levels. Thus, when the engies call for you to play, tell them, “OK, here come some peaks,” then really dig in and give themthe loudest thing you could imaginably play during your set.

For those using pedals, be sure to stage your gain such that turning on or off any given effect doesn’t cause any significant volume changes. For those using patches or samples, be sure all your sounds produce a fairly consistent level. Depending on your medium, normalizing or gently compressing your sounds in advance can help this tremendously. Start with a clean and clear tone or sound, and play long, resonant notes.

Once you’ve caught the engineers’ eyes, you can move on to step two, the tonal and textural stuff. With the input level in place, the engineers will start applying inserts and EQ to the channel, so this is the time to begin playing throughout the full range of the instrument, loud and soft, high and low, staccato and legato, clean and effected. [Vocalists who use effects, please see NOTE #1 at the bottom.]

When this process of level and tone setting has been iterated across every source, you’ll move on to the third step, building your monitor mixes. The monitor engie will ask each player in turn what (s)he wants in his/her wedge. When answering, try to follow the same order of channels you just worked through, indicating for each source how loud or “forward” it should be in the mix. If one or two sources are significantly more or less crucial to monitor than the rest, be sure to note that after providing the complete list of what you’ll need to hear. For example:

• A singing guitarist might say: “I’d like just a touch of kick and snare, a moderate amount of bass, a bit of my own guitar, a fair amount of the other guitar, and plenty of keys and my voice. The most important thing for me to hear is my own voice and the keyboard. If you have to cut something, pull the drums out.”

• A drummer who also plays a sample pad could reply: “I don’t need any of my kit, but please give me a bunch of bass, a middling amount of guitars and keys, a ton of my sample pad, and just a little vocals. The most important source for me is my sample pad, and the vocals can go away if they have to.”

Once the monitor engie has basic mixes up for all the wedges, the band should play and loop a part of a song that uses the most sources possible. [Why? See NOTE #2 at the bottom.] While continuing to loop the part, each member should catch the engie’s eye, one at a time, to fine tune his/her mix.

When it’s your turn, point at a source, then point up or down, then point at the wedge where you want the change. This says to the engineer, “I want source in mix.” Keep looping the part until all the monitor mixes are to taste. A smile and a nod or the “OK/perfect” hand sign indicates to the engie that your mix is to your liking. Repeat as necessary until you’ve covered all your sources.

You may have to tolerate some feedback during your check while the engineers maximize their gain staging and chase down trouble frequencies. Keep playing through the feedback [Again, see NOTE #2.] so the engineers can find the ringing frequency amidst the dynamic and shifting signal. Realize that although standing over a ringing wedge is obnoxious and even occasionally painful, it certainly beats gambling on feedback returning mid-show, so taking a few extra minutes to properly and sufficiently ring out a wedge is always time well spent.

When you and your bandmates are happy with your monitor mixes, it’s time for step four. Stop the loop you’re playing, and tell the engineers that your mixes are good and that you’re ready to play a song and check the house. Pick a couple songs from your set and play them from beginning to end, without stops. [See NOTE #2.] If your wedges need further tuning, signal the monitor engineer while you play.

After a couple songs, ask the front of house engineer if (s)he has heard enough and has the mix dialed in. Once the FOH engineer is happy, ask to play one more tune so the band can hear the sound in the house. Take turns, one band member at a time, walking through the house. If you have any requests for the FOH engineer, now is the time to make them. When every band member walked the house, and the band and engineers are all sufficiently satisfied, then the check is complete.

If your gear must be moved before your set, follow this procedure immediately, well before you consider heading to the green room or the bar or to dinner:

• Mark the onstage position of your gear, using 2-3” strips of tape placed in right angles at the corners of each piece of gear, including mic stands and stage monitors. Using bright and uncommonly-colored tape helps these “spike” marks show up under low stage lighting and allows for your setup to be easily distinguished from other acts’.

• Once the positions of all your gear has been spiked, carry or roll your gear from the stage to your cases at side of stage. Don’t bring your cases to your gear, as that, as before, both doubles the amount of carrying you have to do and screws up the backline staging occurring both onstage and next to it. Start with the delicate items (guitars, cymbals, electronics, etc.) and work towards the rugged stuff (stands, drum hardware, amps, etc.), all the while making sure that the gear will be accessible in the reverse order from side of stage come show time, so the last things to get uncased before your set are also the most delicate. This protects your gear as much as possible and allows for a quicker changeover later on.

• If you are sharing any of your own gear with other bands, be sure that it’s properly labeled and placed somewhere immediately visible to them when they arrive. If you aren’t sharing anything, carefully remove every last piece of gear you care about; an unlabeled power strip or 1/4″ cable or hi-hat clutch left on a stage quickly becomes the property of whomever picks it up.

• Do a quick “owner’s walk” of the stage to be sure you’ve collected every last thing you brought with you. Once this is done, enjoy your break! The engineers, not to mention the bartenders and waitstaff and barbacks and management and security and promoters and bathroom attendants, usually don’t get such a break, so saying thank you and shaking their hands on your way out, as a demonstration of your appreciation for the work they performed, is always a welcome and valued show of respect.

NOTE #1: Unless you are using very particular, obscure, and uncommon effects, you will be much better off by letting the engineers use their house effects. Reverbs and delays are ubiquitous and the engineer will likely put some on your voice even without you asking.

Unless you are running an advanced real-time autotuning rig, or absolutely have to punch in a flanger at only a few crucial moments in a couple songs, or have a calibrated and road-proven harmonizer that needs different settings recalled between each song, let the engineers handle your effects. Otherwise, you’re stuck with the inferior preamp (if there even is one) in your unit, and the monitor and FOH engineers’ hands are severely tied since they can’t separate your vocals from the effect in the channel, meaning the effect will carry into any monitors and submixes, will throw off any inserts and EQ on the channel, and will, sometimes drastically, lower the gain before feedback. Your other option is to pickup a quality mic splitter so that you can send two channels to the engineers, one clean and one effected. Thus, the clean channel hits a proper mic preamp, inserts, and EQ before any effects, meaning both your monitor and FOH mixes will be cleaner, more flexible, and deliver more gain before feedback.

NOTE #2: An engineer cannot fix or adjust something that isn’t happening or being played, so stopping a song to ask for an adjustment is usually completely counterproductive. Instead, keep the tune going and ask over a vocal mic, loudly if need be, for what you need. Alternatively, or if you need something during the show, just catch the engineer’s eye (as any engineer worth their pay will look across the stage periodically, just like a good driver scanning his/her mirrors), and indicate what you need with a couple hand signs. If there is a monitor desk at side of stage, you can also always walk over to talk to the engie, so long as you keep playing. Remember, if in the process of dialing in a mix, an engineer doesn’t want to hear something, they can always mute the related channel, but if they need to hear something when you’ve stopped playing, nothing can progress.

Why Do We Make Soundcheck. Part One

One of the single greatest indicators of a band’s degree of experience, expertise, and general savoir-faire is the manner in which it conducts sound checks. So for those of you looking to take a simple step towards professionalism, or for anyone who prefers eating, sleeping, showering, and hitting on that cute bartender to playing quarter notes to an empty room while feedback swirls around you like a class three tornado, I offer these five bullet points on how to perform a painless, efficient sound check.

First, the basics:

Send all relevant information ahead of you.
The minute your show is booked, you should send your rider and contract to the promoter and venue. Ask the venue, in writing, to forward your rider to the sound and lighting engineers. When in doubt, include more, not less, information: you can never be clear or specific enough. By seeing your rider well in advance, the venue crew can better prepare for your arrival and save crucial time going over basic requirements. Riders should include, at the very least:

• Stage Plot: a detailed picture of the position of all performers, instruments, monitors, and power drops. Drawing it on a bar napkin with a crayon does not count; use any word processor that can draw shapes and lines and save the image as a JPG.

• Input List: a complete account of every input source, including all mics, DIs, and wireless systems. Just about any engineer you will meet will appreciate you following the industry standard convention of channel/source order, so stick with that unless you have a really good reason not to.

• Technical Requirements: a description of what, at minimum, constitutes an acceptable sound system and backline. If you need to clear 1200 decibels SPL, or your drummer must have a 62″ plasma subwoofer to accompany his monitor, or your keyboard must be a Chrysler Grand Caravan, or you’re sponsored by SlimJim and have to use one of their mics, or the system must respond up to microwave frequencies, this is where to say so.

• Extra Credit: Send sound files along with the rider. This lets the engineers hear who you are and what you’re about. It also provides a reference so they know if their mixes are hitting the mark. If you have decent audience recordings of any shows you think were mixed particularly well, those can be of great use to an engineer, in addition to your studio tracks. Similarly, sending photos or video of lighting you’ve enjoyed in the past helps the lighting designer plan and program his looks.

Bring complete instruments.
Cables, rugs, power strips, picks, sticks, mallets, bows, reeds, and tambourines are all part of your instrument: a guitarist without a pick isn’t a guitarist, a drummer without a rug isn’t a drummer, a keyboardist without a power cable isn’t a keyboardist, and so on. If you need it, and the venue hasn’t guaranteed you, in writing, that it will be there, then bring it. In fact, bring two. In general, unless otherwise specified by a contract, musicians should bring, at the very least:

• Drummers: sticks, cymbals, snare, felts, multitool, drum key, and hi-hat clutches to fit various diameter stems. If you’re bringing a kick drum, then you need to bring a rug. Having a spare kick pedal and extra cymbal stands around never hurts either.

• Guitarists and bassists: picks, power strip, 1/4″ cables, change of strings, multitool, strap, 9V batteries. If you’re savvy, you also travel with at least one spare 1/4″ cable, one spare power strip, one spare IEC cable, and a bunch of 9V DC transformers.

• Keyboardists: stand, power strip, 1/4″ cables. Really slick guys have extra 1/4″s and power strips, as well as redundant power cables for their keyboards.

• Computer Musicians and DJs: table or stand, power strip, 1/4″ cables. If your outputs are XLR, then don’t sweat the 1/4″s. If they’re TRS, bring TRS-to-XLRmale adaptors. Again, spare 1/4″ cables, power strips, power supplies, and output adaptors are all good to bring along.

• Brass & Strings: reeds, bows, rosin, change of strings, and stands are all requisite. Spares of all are a bonus.

• If you use music stands, bring your own clip lights with extension cords and spare bulbs even if there are stands at the venue.

• Extra Credit: EVERY player, regardless of instrument, should bring an extra 1/4″ cable, power strip, pack of picks, pair of 5A drumsticks, roll of gaff tape, Sharpie, pen, multitool, and zip ties in an “emergency kit.” All of this fits in a small bag and weighs just a couple of pounds, but it’s well worth it for the gloating you can do after you save your idiot bandmate’s ass when he forgets something crucial.

• Extra Credit: Bring your own vocal mics and DIs. Professional quality gear please – no RatShack, no B******er, no PG series, no cheap/unreliable/flimsy stuff. This affords you the delight of not having to taste the mouth of whomever last used the venue’s mics, and it means you’ll always have spares on hand in case something goes down during the check or the show.

Load in intelligently.
Place your cases to side of stage so the full stage is available for gear and cable runs. By bringing your gear from its case at side of stage to its onstage position, you both keep from cluttering the stage right when it needs to be its cleanest for cable running and dressing, and you save yourself the trip of carrying an empty case offstage. The exceptions to this rule are amps and cabinets in top-over-style cases. Leave the top at side of stage and roll the amp into position on the bottom/caster plate. (Don’t forget to lock your casters once your amp is in place!)

Start by helping each other move the large and heavy objects like drums and amp cabinets. Once all the big stuff is staged, break off and finish the details of your rig by yourself. Any pedal setup involving more than two pedals should live attached a pedalboard, with its patching and power configured for plug-and-play readiness.

• Extra Credit: Use exclusively ATA-rated hardcases in standard sizes. Such cases’ dimensions, durability, and recessed hardware make packing, stacking, and moving much easier. ATA-rated cases also meet the most demanding specifications for the transport of delicate materials, so your gear travels as safely as possible.

Be on time!
It might sound obvious, but lateness screw up dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of people’s days. It pushes back all the other checks at least, and the door and show times at worst. If you’re lucky enough to be the headliner, you will likely check first; checks usually run in the opposite order from that of the show, so that when the first opener finishes their check, everything is set and ready to go come show time. When other acts are late or run long at check, it’s almost always the poor opening act that suffers the most, as it’s ultimately their check that will get shortened, or even cut entirely.

• Extra Credit: Be 30 minutes early. If the venue is open, load your gear to side of stage, and begin prepping the gear, making sure to leave room for any other acts’ backline. If the venue is closed, line up your gear neatly by the stage door, big and heavy stuff first, small stuff last.

Osama Ben Laden Is Confirmed Death

Osama bin Laden has been killed by US operatives in Pakistan,US President Obama announced.

Osama bin Laden, the criminal mastermind behind al-Qaida and the world's most sought-after terrorist since the attacks of 11 September 2001, has been killed by a US operation, President Barack Obama has announced.

In an address to the nation, President Obama said Bin Laden was killed in a "targeted operation" in Abbottabad, a highland town north of Islamabad, last night.

The operation started with an intelligence lead last August, and culminated in an operation involving a "small team of Americans". "After a firefight they killed bin Laden."

None of the Americans was killed. Pakistani co-operation "helped to lead us to him" he said.

Osama's body is in possession of the US, according to the first reports from the US television networks.

As the news spread, crowds gathered outside the gates of the White House in Washington DC, singing the national anthem and cheering.

President Obama made the highly unusual Sunday night live statement to announce the news at around 11.30pm eastern time.

Bin Laden's capture comes eight years to the day that President George Bush declared "mission accomplished" in Iraq. As president, Bush declared he wanted bin Laden "dead or alive" – but it is now the unlikely figure of Barack Obama who has been able to announce the final triumph as US commander-in-chief.

This is a turning point in the global "war on terrorism" that has been waged since 9/11 - and the news will reverberate around the world.

The news comes as an unparalleled boost for US foreign policy, the key aim of which since 2001 has been the disarming and dismemberment of al-Qaida, and coincidentally probably ensures the re-election of Obama in 2012.

As a candidate during the 2008 election campaign, Obama repeatedly vowed: "We will kill Osama bin Laden." And so it has proved.

The Obama statement was scheduled originally for 10.30pm, but the need to inform US congressional leaders caused the delay.

In the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, one western diplomat described the news as a "game changer" – not just for al-Qaida, but also for US foreign policy in Pakistan and Afghanistan, a region embroiled in turmoil and violence since 2001.

"I'm overjoyed," said the diplomat. "But what this exactly means is really not clear."

Some analysts fear bin Laden's death could spark a precipitous US withdrawal from the region, with the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan still unresolved.

It will likely also reconfigure relations with Pakistan, where the CIA is engaged in a controversial assassination campaign against senior al-Qaida figures using Predator and Reaper drones.

"He's dead," said an official with Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence, declining to give details other than to say that it was "highly sensitive intelligence operation".

The official said he was "not at liberty" to give further details on the killing, including on reports that Pakistani intelligence was involved in the operation. "We'll release more information later this morning," he said.

Abbottabad is about two hours' drive north of Islamabad, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It is not part of the tribal belt, where the CIA drone strike campaign has been concentrated, but is home to the Pakistan military's main training institution, the Pakistan Military Academy at Kakul.

The fact that bin Laden was killed outside the tribal belt in Pakistan will raise questions about how the six-foot four-inch fugitive, one of the most famous faces in the world, managed to escape justice for so long.

Pakistan's intelligence services have largely co-operated with the US in capturing al-Qaida fugitives - some of the most notorious figures seized since 2001 were caught in Pakistan's cities such as the architect of 9/11, Khalid Sheikh Muhammad.

In recent months US military and intelligence officials have publicly complained that the ISI has been assisting the Haqqani network, an al-Qaida-linked militant network that straddles the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Ramai nabi menjadikan bumi ini sebagai tempat tinggal di dalam misi dakwah mereka. Masjid ini juga pernah menjadi kiblat pertama bagi umat Islam.

Suatu masa dahulu, umat Islam bebas untuk keluar masuk di dalam al-Aqsa. Ramai yang memulakan pergerakan menunaikan haji dari masjid ini. Apatah lagi terdapat galakan langsung daripada nabi Muhammad untuk menziarahinya. Sabda nabi Muhammad SAW di dalam sepotong hadith:

وعن أبي سعيد الخدري رضي الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: لا تشد الرحال إلا إلى ثلاثة مساجد: المسجد الحرام، والمسجد الأقصى، ومسجدي متفق عليه، واللفظ للبخاري

Daripada Abi Sa’id al-Khudri R.A. Rasulullah SAW dilaporkan berkata:

Janganlah bersungguh-sungguh/bersusah-payah pergi berjalan melainkan ke tiga masjid, al-Masjid al-Haram (Makkah), al-Masjid al-Aqsa (Al-Quds) dan Masjidku (Masjid Nabi di Madinah)

Sehinggalah penjajahan Zionis ke atas Palestin, al-Masjid al-Aqsa kini sunyi daripada pengunjung Muslim bukan Arab. Sekatan serta fatwa pengharaman menziarahinya oleh Mufti Palestin yang turut disokong ramai ulamak kerana perlu membayar wang yang banyak kepada penjajah Zionis, menyebabkan hanya sedikit daripada kita yang mengenali bangunan al-Aqsa yang sebenarnya.

Di dalam bersemangat mempertahankan al-Aqsa, ada antara umat Islam yang cuba untuk memperkenalkan bangunan al-Aqsa.

Antara maklumat yang kerap disebarkan melalui rantaian email dan laman web seperti ini, ialah menyatakan yang Qubbah al-Sakhrah (Dome of the Rock) adalah bukan al-Aqsa. Mereka mendakwa yang ianya adalah propaganda Zionist untuk mengalihkan fokus umat Islam daripada mempertahankan al-Masjid al-Aqsa yang sebenarnya. Ramai daripada kita yang percaya dengan maklumat ini.

Dalam artikel ini, saya akan cuba berkongsi maklumat yang sebenar mengenai bangunan al-Masjid al-Aqsa seperti yang dikenali penduduk Palestin. Saya perlu memberikan kredit kepada pensyarah Universiti al-Najah, Dr Haithem F. al-Ratrout yang telah melakukan kajian perkembangan senibina al-Aqsa di dalam kajian PhD semasa menuntut di Al-Maktoum Institute.

Saya telah mendapat keizinan beliau untuk menyebarkan maklumat kajiannya, kerana menurut beliau ini merupakan tanggungjawab Muslim bagi memperkenalkan bangunan al-Aqsa yang sebenarnya.

Pembina Al Aqsa Yang Sebenarnya

Untuk mengetahui al-Aqsa, kita terlebih dahulu perlu mengetahui siapakah pembinanya. Menurut ulamak, tidak ada satu nas yang amat sahih menyatakan secara jelas siapakah pembina al-Aqsa. Cuma terdapat sepotong hadith sahih menceritakan secara umum pembinaan al-Aqsa, seperti yang diriwayatkan oleh al-Bukhari dan Muslim:

حديث سليمان بن مهران الأعمش، عن إبراهيم بن يزيد التيمي، عن أبيه، عن أبي ذر قال: قلت: يا رسول الله أي مسجد وضع أول؟ قال: المسجد الحرام. قلت: ثم أي؟ قال: المسجد الأقصى. قلت: كم بينهما؟ قال: أربعون سنة

Hadith Sulaiman bin Mahran al-A’mash, daripada Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Tamimi, daripada bapanya Abu Zarr beliau berkata, aku bertanya kepada Rasulullah

“Wahai Rasulullah, masjid yang manakah dibina terlebih dahulu (dalam sejarah)?” Nabi menjawab, “al-Masjid al-Haram.” Aku bertanya lagi, “Selepas itu?” Jawab nabi, “al-Masjid al-Aqsa.” Aku bertanya lagi, “Berapa jarak pembinaan antara keduanya?” Nabi menjawab, “40 tahun.”….

Berdasarkan hadith di atas, oleh kerana jarak pembinaan antara al-Masjid al-Haram dan al-Masjid al-Aqsa adalah dekat, iaitu 40 tahun, ditambah lagi dengan umur umat terdahulu yang amat panjang, maka ramai ulamak berpandangan pembina kedua-dua masjid ini adalah orang yang sama. Justeru, dalam usaha mencari siapakah pembina al-Aqsa, adalah perlu untuk kita mencari siapakah pembina al-Masjid al-Haram di Makkah.

Sebahagian kita berpandangan yang pembina al-Masjid al-Haram ialah Nabi Ibrahim. Ini berdasarkan kepada ayat al-Quran di dalam surah al-Baqarah ayat 127:

وَإِذْ يَرْفَعُ إِبْرَٰهِيمُ ٱلْقَوَاعِدَ مِنَ ٱلْبَيْتِ وَإِسْمَٰعِيلُ

Dan ketika Nabi Ibrahim dan Ismail mengangkat kembali tapak asas tapak rumah ibadah itu (Al-Masjid al-Haram).

Jumhur ulamak, walau bagaimanapun menyatakan yang ayat di atas hanyalah menunjukkan yang nabi Ibrahim membina kembali tapak al-Masjid al-Haram yang telah dibina oleh nabi sebelumnya. Dengan erti kata lain, nabi Ibrahim bukanlah orang pertama yang membina al-Haram. Sekiranya nabi Ibrahim bukan orang pertama membina al-Haram, maka baginda juga bukanlah orang pertama membina al-Aqsa.

Ketika mentafsirkan ayat di atas, Imam al-Tabari telah merekodkan beberapa riwayat mengenai pembina al-Masjid al-Haram yang sebenarnya. Antaranya ialah seperti yang dilaporkan oleh Ato’ bin Abi Rabah dan Abdullah bin Amru yang menyatakan bahawa pembina Ka’bah yang pertama sebenarnya ialah nabi Adam.

Apabila nabi Adam diturunkan dari langit, baginda telah membina rumah ibadah pertama di muka bumi dengan arahan Allah SWT. Baginda tawaf di keliling Ka’bah tersebut, berdasarkan sempadannya yang telah ditetapkan. Ka’bah itulah merupakan asal bagi al-Masjid al-Haram. Kemudian berdasarkan hadith Abu Dzar tadi, baginda telah membina al-Aqsa 40 tahun selepasnya. Adapun nabi Ibrahim, baginda hanyalah membangunkan kembali asas binaan tersebut yang telah roboh berikutan banjir besar serta faktor cuaca yang lain.

Justeru, ramai ulamak yang menyatakan nabi Adam adalah pembina al-Aqsa kerana baginda juga membina Ka’bah.

Konsep Binaan Masjid Di Dalam Islam

Untuk mengetahui bangunan al-Aqsa, kita juga perlu untuk mengetahui konsep binaan masjid di dalam fiqh Islam. Secara ringkasnya, yang dinamakan masjid itu perlulah mempunyai empat elemen:

Lokasi.

Sempadan.

Qiblah.

Aktiviti, termasuklah ritual ibadah dan juga segala aspek kehidupan yang membawa kesejahteraan akhirat.

Gabungan lokasi dan sempadan, menurut ulamak, tidak membawa maksud yang masjid itu perlu berada di dalam satu bangunan. Masjid di zaman nabi Muhammad pun tidak mempunyai bangunan. Yang paling penting ialah, pembina masjid tersebut perlu menentukan lokasi dan sempadannya. Adalah menjadi satu kesilapan sekiranya kita memahami yang masjid itu perlu dibuat di dalam bangunan.

Lokasi Al-Aqsa

Dalam peta politik moden, al-Aqsa terletak di sebuah kawasan yang dikenali sebagai Pekan Lama atau Old City of Jerusalem, Tebing Barat (West Bank). Semasa zaman nabi, banyak istilah yang digunakan untuk merujuk kawasan ini, seperti Eiliya’, Sham, al-Ard al-Muqaddasah, al-Ard al-Mubarakah dan al-Quds. Old City of Jerusalem dikelilingi oleh pagar. Di dalamnya terletak kawasan penempatan lama. Ianya agak padat. Dahulu Muslim Arab merupakan majoriti, akan tetapi selepas penjajahan, orang Yahudi semakin ramai menguasai kawasan penempatan di dalam Old City of Jerusalem. Turut berada di dalam pagar Old City berkenaan, ialah Holy of Sepulchre, gereja utama agama Kristian. Al-Masjid al-Aqsa terletak di tenggara pagar Old City.

Plan Kaabah Di Al-Masjid Al-Haram

Selain itu, kita juga perlu mengetahui bagaimanakah plan asal Ka’bah yang telah dibina oleh nabi Adam. Ini adalah kerana kita telah faham bahawa pembina kedua-dua bangunan ini berkemungkinan besar adalah orang yang sama berdasarkan hadith Abu Dzar tadi. Ramai yang memahami Ka’bah sebagai bangunan berbentuk kiub yang dilitupi oleh kain kiswah hitam. Fakta ini kurang tepat, kerana sebenarnya kawasan Hijir Ismail adalah juga sebahagian Ka’bah berdasar pandangan ramai ulamak. Jika diteliti laporan daripada al-Azraqi (meninggal 222 H), beliau telah melakarkan plan Ka’bah seperti yang telah direnovasi oleh nabi Ibrahim seperti imej berikut:

Secara ringkas, al-Masjid al-Aqsa yang sebenar ialah meliputi semua monumen bangunan dan tanah lapang di sekitar pagar empat segi di atas. Hujjahnya ialah seperti berikut:

1. Nabi Muhammad diisra’ ke al-Aqsa. Kemudian dimikrajkan dari al-Aqsa juga. Semua bersetuju yang nabi dinaikkan ke langit daripada lokasi Dome of the Rock sekarang yang letaknya di bukit paling tinggi di dalam pagar di atas. Justeru tidaklah tepat sekiranya Dome of the Rock dikatakan bukan sebagai al-Aqsa.

2. Masjid tidak semestinya berada di dalam satu bangunan. Ianya boleh jadi di atas tanah lapang, atau dalam bangunan, atau gabungan tanah lapang dan bangunan, selagi mana ditentukan lokasi dan sempadannya.

3. Al-Aqsa mempunyai hubungan dan persamaan dengan Ka’bah. Tidak mustahil, kerana pembinanya adalah orang yang sama. Bahkan jika dibesarkan plan Ka’bah, kita akan dapati yang plannya adalah sama dengan pagar sempadan al-Aqsa. Dengan erti kata lain, sudut bukaan setiap hujung empat seginya adalah sama. Penjelasan lanjut boleh diperolehi daripada buku Dr Haithem yang sebenarnya merupakan thesis PhD beliau.

Memang benar Saidina Umar seakan marah dan tidak bersetuju dengan cadangan Ka’ab al-Ahbar mengenai lokasi di mana perlunya dibina bangunan masjid di dalam al-Aqsa. Ka’ab mencadangkan di lokasi Dome of the Rock sekarang. Umar tidak bersetuju kerana lokasi itu adalah lokasi paling suci dalam agama Yahudi, dan keduanya bangunan utama yang menempatkan Imam sembahyang, perlulah berada di tempat paling hampir dengan qiblat/Ka’bah.

Maka dibinalah bangunan masjid kecil di selatan sempadan pagar al-Aqsa yang betul-betul dibina oleh nabi Adam menghadap ke arah Ka’bah. Masjid asal yang dicadangkan saidina Umar itu dikenali penduduk tempatan sebagai Jami’ Qibli atau Jami’ al-Aqsa. Adapun sekiranya menyebut al-Masjid al-Aqsa, maka ianya merujuk kepada semua yang berada di dalam pagar sempadan al-Aqsa tadi, termasuklah Jami’ Qibli, Masjid Buraq, pelbagai masjid kecil di dalamnya, beberapa bilik perpustakaan, pejabat dan kelas pengajian, Dome of the Rock, Dome of Ascension, Dome of Chain, tanah lapang, dan lain-lain.

Kesimpulan

1. Al-Aqsa ialah kawasan yang meliputi semua monumen, bangunan dan tanah lapang di dalam pagar al-Aqsa seperti gambar di atas. Ini termasuklah Dome of the Rock, yang merupakan sebahagian daripada al-Masjid al-Aqsa.

2. Umat Islam perlu menghentikan penyebaran maklumat salah yang kononnya Dome of the Rock bukan sebahagian daripada al-Aqsa. Sasaran Zionis sekarang ialah membina Haikal Sulaiman di atas tapak Dome of the Rock, yang dianggap sebagai The Holiest of Holy oleh orang Yahudi. Sekiranya kita membiarkan fokus kita daripada mempertahankan Dome of the Rock, maka mudahlah orang Yahudi merampas al-Aqsa.

3. Saya amat mencadangkan rakan-rakan pembaca untuk membeli buku Dr Haithem, serta membaca kajian lanjut mengenai pembinaan Ka’bah, pembinaan Jami’ Qibli, Dome of the Rock dan kubah-kubah lain, sejarah pemerintah yang menguasai dan memakmurkan al-Aqsa dan lain-lain.

7 cool tips to improve your emotional intelligence

Once there lived an old man who kept all different kinds of animals. But his grandson was particularly intrigued by two tigers that lived together in one cage. The tigers had different temperaments; one was calm and self-controlled whilst the other was unpredictable, aggressive, violent, and vicious.

“Do they ever fight, Grandfather?” asked the young boy.

“Occasionally, yes they do,” admitted the old man.

“And which one wins?”

“Well, that depends on which one I feed the most.”

Being able to control your emotions depends in part on how much you ‘feed’ a particular emotion; on how much we focus on what we are afraid of, enraged by, or depressed about. But it’s more than that. Good ‘emotional intelligence’ requires we understand our own moods, recognizing when and why we are upset and having very real strategies in place to be able to influence the way that we feel.

So if you ever find yourself tossed around helplessly on a hysterical tumultuous sea of emotion and want some ways to at least adjust your sails, the better to steer your own course toward calmer waters, then read on, dear reader.

Tip 1: Control your emotions by looking ahead

I recall an old Zen master saying: “Your anger, depression, spite, or despair, so seemingly real and important right now; where will they have gone in a month, a week, or even a moment?”

Very intense emotions blind us to the future (1) and con us that now is all that matters. In fact, when we are incredibly angry or anxious, we can even momentarily forget that there is even going to be a future. I’m reminded of one guy I worked with who’d stuffed an ice cream cone in his boss’s face when he was enraged. This momentary action had huge and prolonged consequences on this man’s life; particularly finances.

We’ve all said or done things we later regret simply because, for a time, we let ourselves be dictated by our own emotion. If you get angry, think to yourself: “How will I feel tomorrow if I lose my dignity and tell this person (I have to see everyday) that they have a face like a cow pat?” If you are anxious about some imminent event, say to yourself: “Wow, how am I going to feel tomorrow/next week when I look back at this?” Look beyond the immediate and you’ll see the bigger picture and calm down, too.

Tip 2: Get to know yourself

We all kid ourselves a little/a lot. “No, I’m really pleased for you! No, I really am!” (Arghhhhhhhh!)

Learn to observe your own attitudes and emotional ebbs and flows. One key first step to emotional control is to know when we are actually being emotional and also why.

If you catch yourself feeling unexpectedly strongly about something, ask yourself why. Controlling your emotions isn’t about pretending they are not there. If you feel jealous, angry, sad, bitter, or greedy, label exactly how you are feeling in your own mind: “Okay, I don’t like that I’m feeling this way, but I’m feeling very envious!” Now you’ve admitted it to yourself.

The next step is to identify why you feel the way you do: “I hate to admit it, but I’m feeling envious of Bob because he’s just been complimented for his work and I haven’t!”

Being able to exercise this self-honesty means you don’t have to resort to what a large proportion of the human race do. You won’t have to ‘rationalize’. We rationalize by kidding ourselves that we are angry with someone not because they have got a raise at work and we haven’t, but because of ‘their attitude towards us’ or some other made up reason. Knowing what emotion you are feeling and being man or woman enough to identify the truth as to why you are feeling it means you’re that much closer to doing something about it.

Tip 3: Change your mood; do something different

We tend to assume that moods just ‘happen to us’ and, like storms, the best we can do is wait until they pass. But, unlike climatic storms, we can influence - even change - our moods without resorting to unhealthy means such as alcohol or drugs. Being able to manage and influence your own emotions is a powerful marker for good health, emotional maturity, and happiness.

One way to alter your mood is to instantly do something else. For example, if you feel flat and bored, continuing to watch uninteresting TV will deepen the mood. Switching it off and going for a walk in a new neighbourhood will inevitably change your mood. If you feel cross, consciously focus on three things in your life for which you can feel grateful. If you are anxious, start to imagine that what you are anxious about has already happened and gone much better than expected.

The important thing is just to do or think something different. Don’t be passively carried along by the current of the mood. The quickest way to do this may be to simply imagine not feeling the way you are feeling. So if I’m feeling hacked off, I might close my eyes and take a few moments to strongly imagine feeling relaxed and comfortable and even in a good mood. This will, at the very least, neutralize the bad mood and may even put you in a good mood.

Tip 4: Observe how others deal effectively with their emotions

We can learn so much from other people (as long as we look to the right people to learn from!).

How do other ‘emotionally skilled’ people deal with their frustrations and difficulties? You could even ask them: “How do you keep so cool when you’re presenting to all these people? Why doesn’t that make you angry? How do you keep smiling after such setbacks?"

Their answers could actually change your life if you start to apply what you learn.

Tip 5: Change your physiology

Some people assume that emotions are ‘all in your head’, whereas actually all emotions are physical responses. Anger pushes heart rate and blood pressure up, which is why having an angry temperament is a predictor of heart disease (2); anxiety produces lots of physical changes; and even depression suppresses the immune system (3).

So part of changing your emotional state involves dealing directly with the physical changes. Physical changes are led by the way we breathe. For instance, anger and anxiety can only ‘work’ if we are breathing quicker with shallow breaths. Take time to:

Stop breathing for five seconds (to ‘reset’ your breath).
Now breathe in slowly, focussing on your diaphragm, until your lungs are full of air.
Then breathe out even more slowly (and whilst doing this, imagine that you are breathing pure rest and relaxation into your hands).
Keep doing this and remember it’s the out-breath that will calm everything down.

Tip 6: Use your noggin

Think of emotion as a strong but stupid being that sometimes needs your guidance and direction. We need some emotion to motivate us, but it needs to be the right emotion at the right time applied in the right way. The more emotional we become, the stupider we become (4). This is because emotions want us to react blindly and physically rather than to think or be objective and rational.

Being objective and rational when a lion was attacking wouldn’t have been great from an evolutionary point of view - because it would have slowed us down. But much of modern life needs measured calm thought rather than blind and sloppy emotional responses.

If you force the thinking part of your brain to work when you start to feel emotional, then you can dilute and subdue the rampaging emotional part. You can do this by simply forcing yourself to remember three names of other students you went to school with or even running through the alphabet in your head. Try it - because it really will work.

Tip 7: Create spare capacity in your life

We experience counterproductive emotions for different reasons. Maybe we have never learnt to control ourselves or perhaps we are living in such a way that makes it more likely we’ll experience emotional problems.

Every organism, from amoeba to antelope and from bluebell flower to blue whale, has needs. And so do you. If these needs aren’t met, then the organism will suffer. You have very basic needs for food, sleep, shelter, and water; if these needs aren’t met properly, you will feel more emotional - no doubt. But you also have emotional needs.

To be emotionally healthy, a person needs to:

Feel safe and secure; feel they have safe territory.
Regularly give and receive quality attention.
Feel a sense of influence and control over their life.
Feel part of a wider community.
Enjoy friendship, fun, love, and intimacy with significant people.
Feel a sense of status; basically, feel they have a recognizable role in life. This also connects to a sense of competence and achievement.
Feel stretched but not stressed to avoid stagnation, boredom, and to enhance self-esteem and a sense of status in life.

When these are met adequately, we then feel our life has meaning and purpose.
Not meeting basic needs leaves us feeling that life is pointless and meaningless and will leave us wide open to emotional problems.

When you live in a way that, to some extent, meets all or most of the above needs, then you’ll enjoy greater emotional stability and control. Knowing what you need in life is the first step to creating ‘spare capacity’ to focus beyond your emotions. And you can see how not meeting the need for feeling secure or getting enough attention or feeling connected to people around you could cause you emotional problems. Really think about these needs and gradually pursue activities that are likely to help you fulfil them.

In this way, you’ll begin to feed the right tiger with the right amount of the right foods.

Kisah Kejayaan

Terlalu banyak kisah-kisah kegagalan mereka yang berjaya boleh dikongsikan. Antara kegemaran saya adalah kisah seorang pemain baseball di Amerika Syarikat pada tahun 70-an. Namanya adalah Babe Ruth.

Babe Ruth ketika itu merupakan pemain yang paling banyak sekali membuat home-run (larian dengan markah tertinggi di dalam baseball) ketika itu. Tiada siapa boleh menandingi rekod Babe Ruth yang membuat home-run.

Namun begitu, Babe Ruth juga merupakan pemain base-ball yang paling banyak sekali struck-out (terpaksa keluar oleh kerana pukulan tidak mengena bola!)- lebih daripada 1,300 kali!

Setiap kali Babe Ruth tidak mengena bola, beliau akan senyum sahaja. Apabila ditanya wartawan sukan kepada Babe Ruth, mengapa beliau senyum setiap kali tidak mengena bola, jawabnya “Setiap kali hayunan saya gagal mengena bola, ia bermakna makin hampir hayunan saya akan mengena bola dan akan mendapat home-run untuk pasukan saya tidak lama lagi!”

Pemikiran Babe Ruth adalah, lagi banyak kali beliau mencuba walaupun gagal, lagi hampir dirinya akan mencapai kejayaan dalam

mendapatkan home-run!

Fikiran beginilah yang perlu ada oleh semua dalam mencapai kejayaan. Kegagalan bukan bererti anda yang gagal secara peribadi,

tetapi, ia bermaksud makin hampir anda akan mencapai kejayaan.

Fikirkan kisah-kisah ini pula:

-Genius Albert Einstein, hanya boleh bercakap apabila umurnya 4 tahun!

-Saintis Isaac Newton sering gagal ketika sekolah dan diberi gelaran oleh guru-guru sebagai murid yang “tiada harapan”!

-F.W Woolworth ketika berumur 21 tahun bekerja dikedai runcit sering dimarahi oleh pemilik kedai sebagai “seorang yang tidak

pandai menjual!”. Kini, Woolworth adalah antara rangkaian pasaraya terbesar di United Kingdom!

-Pengasas Disneyland, Mr Walt Disney ketika bekerja di syarikat akhbar pernah dimarahi oleh editornya oleh kerana “Tidak mempunyai imaginasi dan tidak pernah mempunyai idea yang bernas”!

-Michael Jordan, pemain basketball terulung pernah dikeluarkan dari pasukan basketball ketika di sekolah menengah!

-Thomas Edison, pencipta lampu mentol pula ketika sekolah sering dimarahi oleh gurunya dengan “Seorang murid yang terlalu bodoh untuk pelajari apa sahaja”!

Tidak habis lagi kisah Thomas Edison, tahukah anda Thomas Edison juga gagal dalam lebih 1,000 eksperimen dalam mencipta lampu mentol sebelum menjumpa formula sebenar cara menyalakan lampu mentol!

Adakah ikon-ikon di atas pernah mengalah dan berhenti daripada melakukan apa yang mereka percaya? Sudah tentunya tidak.

Kegagalan adalah sesuatu yang pasti dilalui oleh setiap insan dalam mencapai kejayaan. Apa yang membezakan mereka yang berjaya kini dan mereka yang tidak adalah, mereka yang berjaya melihat kegagalan sebagai peluang untuk belajar supaya kegagalan tersebut tidak diulangi. Apabila jatuh, mereka akan bangun semula!

10 Amalan Terbalik

Marilah kita bermuhasabah atau menilai dan menghitung kembali tentang amalan harian kita. Kadang-kadang kita akan dapati amalan kita adalah terbalik atau bertentangan dari apa yang patut dilakukan dan dituntut oleh Islam. Mungkin kita tidak sedar atau telah dilalaikan atau terikut-ikut dengan budaya hidup orang lain. Perhatikan apa yang dipaparkan dibawah sebagai contoh amalan yang terbalik:-

1. Amalan kenduri arwah beberapa malam yang dilakukan oleh keluarga simati selepas sesuatu kematian (malam pertama, kedua, ketiga, ketujuh dan seterusnya) adalah terbalik dari apa yang dianjurkan oleh Rasulullah di mana Rasulullah telah menganjurkan jiran tetangga memasak makanan untuk keluarga simati untuk meringankan kesusahan dan kesedihan mereka. Keluarga tersebut telah ditimpa kesedihan, terpaksa pula menyedia makanan dan belanja untuk mereka yang datang membaca tahlil. Tidakkah mereka yang hadir makan kenduri tersebut khuatir kalau-kalau mereka termakan harta anak yatim yang ditinggalkan oleh simati atau harta peninggalan simati yang belum dibahagikan kepada yang berhak menurut Islam?

2. Kalau hadir ke kenduri walimatul urus (kenduri kahwin) orang kerap salam berisi (hadiah wang yang diberi semasa bersalam). Kalau tak ada duit nak dikepit dalam tangan, maka segan ia nak pergi makan kenduri. Tetapi kalau ia menziarah orang mati, tidak segan pula salam tak berisi. Sepatutnya kalau menziarah keluarga si matilah kita patut memberi sedekah. Kalau ke kenduri kahwin, tak bagi pun tak apa kerana tuan rumah panggil untuk diberi makan bukan untuk ia menambah pendapatan.

3. Ketika menghadiri majlis pemimpin negara kita berpakaian cantik kemas dan segak tetapi bila mengadap Allah baik di rumah maupun di masjid, pakaian lebih kurang saja bahkan ada yang tak berbaju. Tidakkah ini suatu perbuatan yang terbalik.

4. Kalau menjadi tetamu di rumah orang dan di beri jamuan, kita rasa segan nak makan sampai habis apa yang dihidangkan kerana rasa segan dan malu, sedangkan yang dituntut dibanyakkan makan dan dihabiskan apa yang dihidang supaya tuan rumah rasa gembira dan tidak membazir.

5. Kalau bersolat sunat di masjid amat rajin, tapi kalau di rumah, sangat malas. Sedangkan sebaik-baiknya solat sunat banyak dilakukan di rumah seperti yang dianjurkan oleh Rasulullah untuk mengelakkan rasa riak.

6. Bulan puasa adalah bulan mendidik nafsu termasuk nafsu makan yang berlebihan tetapi kebanyakan orang mengaku bahawa dalam carta perbelanjaan setiap rumah orang Islam akan kita dapati perbelanjaan di bulan puasa adalah yang tertinggi dalam setahun. Sedangkan sepatutnya perbelanjaan di bulan puasa yang terendah. Bukankah terbalik amalan kita?

7. Kalau nak mengerjakan haji, kebanyakan orang akan membuat kenduri sebelum bertolak ke Mekah dan apabila balik dari Mekah tak buat kenduri pun. Anjuran berkenduri dalam Islam antaranya ialah kerana selamat dari bermusafir, maka dibuat kenduri, bukan kerana nak bermusafir, maka dibuat kenduri. Bukankah amalan ini terbalik? Atau kita mempunyai tujuan lain.

8. Semua ibubapa amat bimbang kalau-kalau anak mereka gagal dalam periksa. Maka dihantarlah ke kelas tuisyen walau pun banyak belanjanya. Tapi kalau anak tak boleh baca Quran atau solat, tak bimbang pula bahkan tak mahu hantar tuisyen baca Quran atau kelas khas mempelajari Islam. Kalau guru tuisyen sanggup dibayar sebulan RM20.00 satu pelajaran 8 kali hadir tapi kepada Tok Guru Quran nak bayar RM15.00 sebulan 20 kali hadir belajar pun menggeletar tangan. Bukankah terbalik amalan kita? Kita sepatutnya lebih berbimbang jika anak tidak dapat baca Al Quran atau bersolat dari tidak lulus periksa.

9. Kalau bekerja mengejar rezeki Allah tak kira siang malam, pagi petang, mesti pergi kerja. Hujan atau ribut tetap diharungi kerana hendak mematuhi peraturan kerja. Tapi ke rumah Allah (masjid) tak hujan, tak panas, tak ribut pun tetap tak datang ke masjid. Sungguh tak malu manusia begini, rezeki Allah diminta tapi nak ke rumahNya segan dan malas.

10. Seorang isteri kalau nak keluar rumah samada dengan suami atau tidak, bukan main lagi berhias. Tetapi kalau duduk di rumah, masyaAllah. Sedangkan yang dituntut seorang isteri itu berhias untuk suaminya, bukan berhias untuk orang lain. Perbuatan amalan yang terbalik ini membuatkan rumahtangga kurang bahagia.

11. Kita cukup teruja untuk meng’forward’ kan sms atau emel dalam bentuk gossip2 artis kepada kawan2. Malah kebanyakkan sms emel tersebut tidak benar dan boleh menjatuhkan maruah org lain. Tapi kenapa susah sangat nak forward emel2 peringatan sebegini kepada kawan2 kita??….. Cukup dengan contoh-contoh di atas. Marilah kita berlapang dada menerima hakikat sebenarnya. Marilah kita beralih kepada kebenaran agar hidup kita menurut landasan dan ajaran Islam yang sebenar bukan yang digubah mengikut selera kita. Allah yang mencipta kita maka biarlah Allah yang menentukan peraturan hidup kita. Sabda Rasullullah SAW: “Sampaikanlah dariku walaupun satu ayat.” (Riwayat Bukhari)Semoga dapat kita sama-sama fikir-fikirkan dan renung-renungkan, tergolongkah kita di dalam golongan yang terbalik ini?

Perlaburan di dalam industri penternakan burung walet

PROGRAM Transformasi Ekonomi (ETP) yang melibatkan aktiviti pertanian dijangka mampu mencipta 75,000 peluang pekerjaan sepanjang lima tahun akan datang.

Menurut Menteri Pertanian dan Industri Asas Tani, Datuk Seri Noh Omar, kementeriannya kini diamanahkan oleh kerajaan untuk melaksanakan 16 buah Projek Permulaan (EPP) membabitkan pelbagai perusahaan pertanian yang merangkumi tiga sub utama iaitu rumpai laut, burung walet dan ikan hiasan.

Menurutnya, melalui pelaksanaan projek tersebut, ia akan mampu membuka peluang pekerjaan kepada masyarakat dan juga pelatih dalam industri pertanian.

Memperkatakan tentang industri sarang burung walet, Noh melihat ia sebuah industri yang memberi pulangan lumayan. Ia sesuai diusahakan dan dikendali tanpa memerlukan penjagaan makan dan minum burung walit.

Malah, ia juga menawarkan cabang perniagaan keluarga yang boleh diwarisi oleh generasi seterusnya.

Industri sarang burung walet bukan baru di negara ini tetapi tidak ramai pengusahanya, terutama bumiputera.

Semua ini kerana kekurangan maklumat mengenai industri ini. Oleh kerana wujud pendedahan dan digalakkan oleh kerajaan hingga dimasukkan dalam Bajet 2010 dan 2011, industri ini menjadi pilihan ramai termasuk usahawan bumiputera.

Dianggarkan sehingga kini terdapat lebih 10,000 premis membela burung walet di seluruh negara dengan nilai eksportnya lebih RM500 juta.

“Tahun 2011, kita sasarkan mendapat pendapatan RM1 bilion. Kita yakin potensi industri burung walet dapat menyumbang sebanyak RM5 bilion kepada pendapatan negara menjelang 2015,” katanya.

Kementerian Pertanian dan Industri Asas Tani melalui Agrobank telah menyediakan peruntukan kepada mereka yang berminat untuk menceburi industri sarang burung walet.

Untuk menggalakkan industri ini, kerajaan telah meluluskan RM68 juta wang pinjaman pada tahun 2010.

Untuk pengusaha kecil pula, kerajaan menyediakan bantuan geran. Pada 2010 disediakan peruntukan RM5 juta, dan modal permulaan sebanyak RM10,000 hingga RM30,000 untuk seorang pengusaha.

Oleh kerana ia tumbuh bagaikan cendawan tumbuh selepas hujan, maka Jabatan Perkhidmatan Veterinar (JPV) dipertanggungjawabkan dalam industri ini. Untuk itu JPV mewujudkan struktur bangunan pemeliharaan burung walet yang standard di samping menjamin pemuliharaan alam sekitar.

JPV juga akan mengetuai pemantauan terhadap pemeliharaan burung berkenaan sejajar garis panduan yang telah dikeluarkan oleh Kerajaan Pusat.

Sebelum ini beberapa jabatan kerajaan terlibat seperti Perhilitan dan Pihak Berkuasa Tempatan (PBT). Bagaimanapun, pengusaha yang ingin membina bangunan burung walit di kawasan PBT maka kebenaran perlu diminta daripada pihak berkuasa berkenaan tetapi bagi di luar kawasan PBT, ia perlu mendapatkan kelulusan daripada Pejabat Tanah. Dengan ada kelulusan ini barulah pengusaha diberi lesen.

Untuk memastikan industri ini berjalan baik, Noh berkata, kerajaan akan menguatkuasakan Garis Panduan Pembangunan Industri Burung Walet Negara yang baru diluluskan.

Garis panduan yang juga disebut 1GP Sarang Burung Walit yang pertama di dunia ini akan membolehkan lebih 50,000 premis rumah burung di negara ini termasuk di Sabah dan Sarawak didaftarkan dengan Jabatan Perkhidmatan Haiwan sebelum dilesenkan oleh pihak berkuasa tempatan yang berkenaan. Antara lain ia bertujuan mengatasi masalah bau, bunyi dan risiko penyakit.

Kata Menteri Pertanian dan Industri Asas Tani itu lagi, kini sesiapa pun boleh melabur dalam industri ini. Caranya melalui pembelian sebuah rumah burung walet berserta tapak rumah yang dimajukan sebagai Ecopark.

Harga bagi sebuah rumah burung walet yang ditawarkan ialah RM200,000 hingga RM320,000. Rumah burung walet ini turut dilengkapi peralatan audio untuk memanggil burung tersebut.

Hasil sarang burung walet boleh mencecah daripada RM10,000 sehingga RM20,000 sebulan.

Secara umumnya, sarang burung walet ini diperbuat daripada air liur haiwan tersebut dan mempunyai kualiti tertentu dengan nilai harga yang berbeza berdasarkan jenis dan warna.

Khasiat sarang burung walet banyak diperkatakan sejak dulu lagi. Ia yang mampu melancarkan fungsi paru-paru, perjalanan darah, menambah daya ketahanan badan, meningkatkan kekuatan jantung dan banyak lagi untuk kesihatan manusia.

Permintaan terhadap sarang burung walet semakin tinggi dan berterusan terutama untuk pasaran luar negara termasuk di Hong Kong, China, Taiwan dan Korea dan harga sarang burung tersebut mencecah RM5,000 sekilogram mengikut kualiti.

Industri sarang burung walet telah mencetuskan satu lagi industri yang berpotensi besar bagi semua usahawan untuk merealisasikan kehidupan mewah selain daripada bidang-bidang perniagaan yang lain.

Mungkin selepas ini lebih banyak kewujudan blok rumah seperti ‘kubu’ tidak lagi mengundang seribu pertanyaan kepada kita.
