DEEP PURPLE have today released their new single “Diablo,” the latest taste from SPLAT!—their new studio album, out July 3 on earMUSIC. The new track features a very special guest: global superstar and Grammy-winning guitarist, singer, and songwriter Keith Urban on second guitar.

“Diablo” follows “Arrogant Boy” (the album’s first single) and opens the door to one of DEEP PURPLE’s surreal new story worlds: the most dangerous place on earth, where a heroine crosses a river, jumps into a fighting pit, celebrates with a bucket of wine, falls into the glitter pool and somehow makes it back home with a tale to tell. “Diablo” is a classic DEEP PURPLE rocker— the kind of hard rock track that lives from the riff, the groove, and the band chemistry captured in the studio.

Watch the video for “Diablo” below:

“It is all about taking chances,” DEEP PURPLE frontman Ian Gillan says of “Diablo.” “Just for once in your life, do something exciting, step out of the mold, take that curious bend in the road instead of sticking to the highway and do something that will, for the rest of your life, either guide or warn you.”

SPLAT! has already received enthusiastic first fan and media reactions, with early press praising the album’s DEEP PURPLE spirit. Uncut calls SPLAT! “distilled, high-octane Purple at its finest,” while Classic Rock praises the album for delivering “everything that makes Deep Purple one of the greatest acts in hard rock.”

DEEP PURPLE are gearing up for a major run of European summer dates, starting next week in Finland, followed by shows in Norway, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Italy before the SPLAT! World Tour heads to North America. The upcoming touring schedule includes 86 shows across 28 countries. Tickets are available via Deep Purple’s official website.

Long before they were headlining amphitheaters, launching their own festivals, or carrying the torch for an entire musical movement, the members of Slightly Stoopid were just two teenagers from Ocean Beach hanging around the orbit of one of Southern California’s most influential bands.

The story of Sublime and Slightly Stoopid has often been told through record sales, tour posters, and festival lineups. But at its core, it has always been a story about mentorship, friendship, and the unlikely passing of a torch from one generation to the next.

Today, that story has come full circle.

This summer, Slightly Stoopid and Sublime will once again share stages across North America, including the massive Field Of Dreamz Festival at Petco Park in San Diego. But this time, the singer standing at center stage for Sublime is not Bradley Nowell. It’s his son, Jakob.

For Miles Doughty, the journey from those early Skunk Records days to watching Jakob front his father’s band remains surreal.

“We were listening to those guys back in the day on cassettes and CDs,” Doughty tells ThePier.org. “We were fortunate to know those guys since we were fifteen and sixteen, and they kind of took us under their wing and taught us a lot in a short amount of time.”

That mentorship began during one of the most important periods in Southern California music history.

In the mid-1990s, Sublime was on the verge of exploding beyond Long Beach. Bradley Nowell, alongside producer and Skunk Records co-founder Miguel Happoldt, had already built a fiercely independent culture around the band. Their blend of punk, reggae, hip hop, ska, and surf culture wasn’t simply creating songs. It was creating a community.

When Nowell discovered Slightly Stoopid, he immediately recognized something familiar in the young band. Rather than treating them like competitors, he welcomed them into the family.

Through Skunk Records, Sublime helped provide the first major platform for Slightly Stoopid, making them one of the earliest acts signed to the label. It placed the band directly inside the DNA of a movement that was still being written in real time.

Just as important as Bradley’s influence was Miguel Happoldt’s.

Looking back, Doughty still speaks about those recording sessions with obvious admiration.

“Miguel was a genius in the lab,” he says. “Honestly, him and Brad really kind of took us under their wing.”

The studio itself was hardly glamorous.

“It wasn’t like anything glorious,” Doughty recalls. “It was a pretty ghetto recording setup called the Fake Nightclub in Long Beach. It was just some real eight-track recording and pretty punk rock, the whole setup.”

Inside that makeshift creative headquarters, future history was being made.

“The whole Long Beach posse would be hanging out,” Doughty says. “That was kind of the party zone, even though it was a punk rock studio.”

What Happoldt offered went far beyond recording techniques.

“Miguel just has the ear. He still does. And it’s incredible,” Doughty says. “Just helping Kyle and me along the way when we were first starting and just so much great advice and also just his studio magic.”

Then everything changed.

Just as Sublime’s self-titled album was preparing to become one of the defining records of the decade, Bradley Nowell died in May 1996 at age 28.

For many scenes, the loss of a foundational figure can create a vacuum that never gets filled. But the culture Nowell, Happoldt, and the Skunk Records crew built proved stronger than any one individual.

Slightly Stoopid became one of the bands that helped carry the movement forward.

Over the next three decades, they evolved from protégés into leaders, building one of the most successful independent touring careers in modern rock. Their annual summer tours became gathering places for an entire subculture, connecting surfers, punk kids, reggae fans, jam-band followers, and alternative rock audiences under one banner.

Meanwhile, Sublime’s influence only grew.

“I don’t think anyone could have ever thought it was going to be as big as the scene is,” Doughty says. “Brad never really got to enjoy the explosion of the band because he had passed away right as the band was getting this monumental success.”

Yet the music never disappeared.

“It’s still relevant today,” Doughty says. “All their records are so relevant today. They feel like they just came out recently. That’s what’s so dope about it.”

That staying power is what makes the current era feel so emotional.

Today, Doughty finds himself sharing stages with Jakob Nowell, a musician who not only inherited his father’s voice but also his place within the culture.

“There are so many moments where you close your eyes and Jake sounds so much like his dad,” Doughty says. “I’m just stoked for them, man. It’s a family vibe.”

That phrase — family vibe — comes up repeatedly when Doughty talks about Sublime.

Because despite the decades, the record sales, and the changing generations, the relationship has never felt like a business arrangement or a nostalgic reunion. It feels like family members continuing a story that started long before most of today’s fans ever bought a ticket.

For Doughty, seeing Jakob carry the legacy forward is less about recreating the past than celebrating the future.

“It’s great having Jakob back in the band and they’re creating music,” he says. “Sublime has been around three decades, and they’re still relevant today.”

That’s ultimately what makes the connection between Sublime and Slightly Stoopid so unique. Most musical scenes can trace their history through records and timelines. California reggae can trace its history through relationships.

Bradley Nowell discovered a young band from Ocean Beach and gave them a shot.

Miguel Happoldt helped shape their sound.

Slightly Stoopid carried the culture forward for three decades.

Now Jakob Nowell is helping write the next chapter.

The family tree keeps growing.

And somewhere in that story, Bradley’s fingerprints remain on all of it.

The South Carolina by way of Philly indie, alternative and hip-hop duo continue to carve out their own lane with a sound that moves between sharp lyricism, offbeat humor, melodic hooks and genre-blurring production. “My Own Parade” adds another vibrant entry to the group’s catalog, balancing their laid-back personality with the kind of rhythmic energy that has made them a favorite across the reggae-rock, alternative and festival circuits.

Little Stranger have built their reputation on a mix of musical versatility and live-show charisma, moving comfortably between hip-hop, indie rock, reggae-adjacent grooves and left-field pop instincts. That range has helped them connect with audiences across multiple scenes, and “My Own Parade” feels like another step forward in that evolution.

The single arrives during a busy year for the group. Little Stranger already have multiple festival appearances on the books, including Bonnaroo, Sweetwater 420 Fest, Northlands Music & Arts Festival and Everwild. They also recently announced a summer headlining tour with Tropidelic, Wax, Jarv and Damn Skippy, bringing their high-energy live show to fans across the country.

As this week’s Pier Song of the Week, “My Own Parade” will be featured on Skratch N Sniff’s ALT show, where The Pier highlights standout tracks from the reggae, alternative, hip-hop and coastal music worlds.

There is a moment on Kurt Deimer’s new album A Grog Is Born where the volume drops just enough for the message to cut through.

That moment arrives in “True,” a soaring rock anthem that serves as one of the emotional anchors of an album built on reinvention, resilience, and self discovery. While A Grog Is Born features everything from crushing hard rock to cinematic balladry, “True” may be the song that best captures where Deimer finds himself today: confident in his voice, grounded in his identity, and determined to stay connected to the principles that shaped him.

For Deimer, the song was born from a simple but increasingly relevant idea.

“I wrote ‘True’ because I wanted people to think about if you can just go through life and stay true to who you are, true to what your soul is all about, what your heart is all about,” he explains. “You’re going to have those moments where you might not stay true to yourself, but you’ve got to always try to remember to come back to your beliefs and your thoughts and your principles.”

It is a message that resonates throughout A Grog Is Born, an album that marks a significant leap forward from Deimer’s debut release. Years of touring alongside artists such as Geoff Tate, Tesla, Sebastian Bach, Buckcherry, Steel Panther, and Drowning Pool helped sharpen both his confidence and his vocal abilities.

“As I toured, that just kept building up my vocal cords and my strength,” Deimer says. “My voice came into itself. My voice is stronger than ever.”

That growth is evident throughout the record, particularly on “True,” where Deimer balances introspective lyrics with a widescreen rock sound crafted alongside producer Chris Lord-Alge. The track carries a nostalgic quality that feels intentionally timeless.

“I love the song because we kind of did it in a way where it’s like true Americana,” Deimer says. “It’s kind of nostalgic and you just jam that tune in the car.”

The song’s soaring guitar work and singalong chorus make it one of the album’s most immediate tracks, but beneath the hooks lies a deeper reflection on how easily people can lose themselves amid life’s pressures.

“I bet if people really look deep inside, the majority of people would find out, ‘I really do care about other people. I really do want to help other people. I really am a kind person,’ but life beats them up so bad that you tend to lose yourself and who you are.”

That sentiment mirrors the broader story behind A Grog Is Born. Inspired by family memories, personal loss, and Deimer’s evolution as both a musician and actor, the album represents what he describes as a rebirth.

“This year just feels like a big opening, like I’m being born into a whole new level of my craft in movies and in music.”

On an album filled with towering riffs, powerful collaborations, and larger than life characters, “True” stands apart because it strips everything back to a universal question: When the noise fades away, are you still the person you set out to be?

For Kurt Deimer, that answer has never sounded clearer.

But according to frontwoman Amy Lee, the real triumph of the band’s new album Sanctuary isn’t the arenas, the stadiums, or the renewed cultural relevance. It’s the freedom.

“It feels so good,” Lee says of finally completing the record. “It’s already a release just to have it be done and be able to listen back and not be listening for flaws and problems to fix. Just enjoying it and being like, ‘That’s it. It’s done.’”

That sense of liberation pulses through Sanctuary, an album Lee describes as emotionally expansive and sonically adventurous. Across its tracklist, Evanescence leans harder into electronic textures, cinematic production, and massive hooks without sacrificing the storm-cloud heaviness that made the band iconic in the first place. Songs like “Rapture” explode with synth-driven momentum and dancefloor undercurrents, while tracks like “Forever Without You” tap into the emotional vulnerability that has always anchored Lee’s songwriting.

“To make a great album, you need to go to a lot of different places,” Lee explains. “I want to serve a lot of emotions so that you have it when you’re in that quiet place and you have it when you’re in that rage place.”

Part of that evolution came from opening the creative process wider than ever before. Alongside veteran producer Nick Raskulinecz, the band brought in producer-songwriters Jordan Fish and Zach Cervini, a move that injected fresh energy into the sessions. Lee describes the collaboration as “magic,” recalling how quickly ideas started flowing once everyone got into the same room.

“It became this perfect round of, ‘Ooh, I got an idea. Ooh, let me do this on that,’” she says. “Just amazing synergy. When it clicks, it clicks.”

What makes Sanctuary especially striking is that Lee entered many of those sessions without the safety net she normally relies on. “I always have a bag of ideas,” she says. “This time I didn’t. Going in empty-handed was what was different for me.”

Instead of fear, though, the uncertainty unlocked confidence. “I’m not scared to not have a cool idea,” Lee says with a laugh. “I know I’ve got cool ideas in my head.”

That confidence extends beyond the studio. As Evanescence prepares for one of the biggest tours of its career, Lee is fully aware the band is operating on a different level now than during its early-2000s peak.

“As we’ve gotten older, we’re having this bigger moment than we had in the early days,” she says. “Which is wild and really beautiful because I’m ready for it now.”

And while Evanescence fans have spent years begging for more music, Lee knows exactly what this album means to them.

“The number one thing they always want is new music,” she says. “That’s the gold.”

With Sanctuary, Evanescence isn’t chasing nostalgia or attempting to recreate the past. The album feels more like a band rediscovering its power in real time — older, wiser, heavier, and somehow more alive than ever.

A musical brotherhood founded by Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald, Slightly Stoopid has grown to achieve artistic freedom and commercial success through a DIY ethos all their own. Unwavering in their principles of independence and determined to succeed on their own terms, the pair of longtime childhood friends were mentored by Bradley Nowell of Sublime and lean into their rock, reggae and punk roots with music that embraces West Coast subculture and positive party energy. Warriors of the road, their touring has grown exponentially both domestically and internationally with sold-out headlining dates across the world, and festival appearances at famed events such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Austin City Limits, Outside Lands, Cali Vibes and countless others.

Thirty years into the journey, the prolific collective has much to celebrate. The band founded their own record label, Stoopid Records, which released their platinum single “Closer To The Sun,” and gold singles “2am” and “Collie Man.” With Billboard-charting albums and over 1 million physical catalog sales to date, they continue to elevate their game. Slightly Stoopid’s eclectic collaborations include Snoop Dogg, Bob Weir, Stephen Marley, Cypress Hill, G-Love, Barrington Levy, Chali2na, Karl Denson (Rolling Stones), Don Carlos (Black Uhuru) & Rashawn Ross (Dave Matthews Band). The band independently curates their annual Closer to the Sun destination music festival in Mexico, which has sold out 10 years in a row. Born from humble Southern California roots in Ocean Beach, CA, today Slightly Stoopid bears the torch for a musical lifestyle that resonates across the world.

Last weekend’s Skratch N Sniff mixes are now live, and this one came stacked on both sides of the dial.

The weekend of May 30, 2026 brought Alternative Mix #700 and Rock Mix #1216, giving listeners another full blast of remixes, deep cuts, new releases and left-field collisions from across the rock, alternative, punk, reggae-rock and heavy music worlds. If you missed the broadcast, both shows are now available to stream at soundcloud.com/snsmix.

Alternative Mix #700 hit a major milestone for the Alt Show, moving through a wide-ranging set that jumped from remix-heavy classics to newer cuts and scene staples. The show opened with a Kastra remix of Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” before moving into In Color, M.O.T.H.E.R., Bad Suns and All American Rejects. From there, the mix pulled in Beastie Boys’ “No Sleep Till Brooklyn,” MGK and Fred Durst’s “FIX UR FACE,” Paramore, The Neighbourhood and The Clockworks.

The back half of the Alt Show leaned into the kind of cross-genre energy SNS does best. The Clash, Codefendants, NOFX, Alt-J and Crazy Town all made appearances, while Segment 4 brought a full reggae-rock and alternative crossover moment with Sublime’s “Ensenada,” Cisco Adler’s “Mango Tree” featuring Mihali as ThePier.org Feature Song, AWOLNATION and Makua’s “Catch A Wave,” and AWOLNATION’s “Sail” in Feed Me remix form.

Rock Mix #1216 came in just as heavy, opening with AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” in Crookers remix form before rolling into Breaking Benjamin, The Hu featuring Jonny Hawkins of Nothing More, Beartooth and Architects. The show also featured MGK and Fred Durst’s “FIX UR FACE,” Social Distortion’s “Born To Kill,” Sleep Theory’s “Words Are Worthless,” Five Finger Death Punch’s “Eye Of The Storm,” Korn’s “Freak On A Leash,” Deftones’ “Be Quiet And Drive,” Nothing More’s Jonathan Davis remix of “Angel Song,” Everlast’s “Stones” and Wage War’s “Blindfold.”

Across both shows, SNS once again found the sweet spot between radio-rock familiarity and remix-show chaos. Linkin Park, Beastie Boys and Social Distortion crossed into both playlists, while newer names like Bad Omens, Jutes, Falseheads, Ryan Perdz, Nightshift Special and untitled helped keep the weekend fresh.

It was recorded at producer Justin Raisen’s (Kim Gordon, Charli xcx) Los Angeles home studio alongside musicians assembled in the spirit of the Wrecking Crew session players in the ’60s and ’70s, and its sound takes perpetual influence from the alternative sounds of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s: Pixies, Soundgarden, Cocteau Twins, The Breeders, PJ Harvey, The Muffs, Björk, Alice in Chains, L7, Juliana Hatfield.

“I’ve listened to that stuff since I was a kid,” Grohl says of the blend of sounds evidenced on the album’s singles “THUM,” “595” and “Cool Buzz.” Also out today is a Nikki Milan Houston-directed music video for album track “Bug in the Cake,” which can be seen below. Grohl will make her television debut on June 3 on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

“Everything was written in the studio,” Grohl says of the Be Sweet To Me material. “I would come in with an inspiration playlist, we would hang and listen for a little while, and then start writing.” “Violet is so well-versed in all styles of music; every playlist was different,” says Raisen, describing Violet’s assemblages of trip hop, new wave, Scandinavian black metal, ’70s acoustic folk, and vocal jazz. “She showed me a number of things that I wasn’t familiar with; her encyclopedic knowledge of music is crazy.”

Critics are already raving about Be Sweet To Me, with NYLON stating, “Violet Grohl is the most authentic successor we’ve had to ‘90s alt rock in a long time, and if you’re skeptical of that claim, just let the music speak for itself.” SPIN wrote, “The songs from Be Sweet To Me aren’t tentative. They arrive loud, fuzzy and dangerously catchy.”

Violet’s first-ever headline tour kicks off tonight with a sold-out show in Los Angeles and continues this month with sold out shows in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. If you’re in New York, Violet will be playing an in-store at Rough Trade NYC on June 1st.
Cisco Adler isn’t chasing a comeback. If anything, “Mango Tree” feels more like a return — not to a sound, but to a state of mind.

For someone who has spent years shaping the sonic identity of other artists, helping define the loose, sun-soaked elasticity of modern reggae rock, Adler’s latest release leans inward. It trades polish for something more instinctive, rooted in memory and muscle. The track pulls directly from his upbringing in Maui, where music wasn’t curated — it was absorbed.

“That one is really about coming home,” Adler says. “Because I grew up underneath the mango tree in my yard in Maui. And I can still smell the mangoes on the ground rotting.”

That sensory detail is the engine behind the song. “Mango Tree” doesn’t try to recreate a genre so much as bottle a feeling — the kind that defined Adler long before he became a go-to producer for artists across hip-hop, reggae, and alternative scenes. There’s a looseness to it, but also intention. The beat hits, the guitars are immediate, and the melody moves like something remembered rather than constructed.

“There’s something about not trying to write a pop melody… and just sing a beautiful melody that comes to you and comes naturally,” he explains. “And that’s how ‘Mango Tree’ was. It came right out.”

That immediacy is notable coming from an artist who openly describes himself as a “shape shifter” in the studio, someone who has spent years adapting to the needs of others. As a producer, Adler’s role has often been to refract another artist’s vision back at them, sharpened and amplified. Here, the refraction is gone.

“It’s time also that I assume my own shape and form and I deliver the message that comes sort of purest from my heart and soul,” he says.

The shift didn’t happen in a vacuum. Adler reveals that his studio burned down last year, wiping out years of work and forcing a hard reset. Instead of rebuilding what was lost, he leaned into the blank space.

“It was such a moment of rebirth and figuring out who the hell I was and what did I want to do with this next chapter,” he says. “And it just brought me back to myself.”

That sense of rediscovery runs through “Mango Tree.” It’s not just autobiographical — it’s elemental. You can hear the overlap of the influences that have always defined Adler: reggae’s warmth, hip-hop’s cadence, rock’s edge. But more than anything, you hear clarity.

“I just know when I’m true to myself, that’s when the best things happen to me,” he says.

For an artist who has long operated as a behind-the-scenes catalyst, “Mango Tree” feels like a rare moment of full focus — not on the scene he helped build, but on the foundation that built him.
