Johnson has struggled to reproduce the kind of performances which helped the Aussies to triumph in their winter series in South Africa although captain Ricky Ponting was encouraged by his display against Northamptonshire last week even though his figures were modest.

The skipper revealed that Johnson may not take the new ball against England as his side look to peg back a 1-0 deficit but he believes this would allow him to "swing the ball later in the innings".

And Sky Bet make it 20/1 about Johnson silencing his critics in emphatic fashion with a 10-wicket haul in the match while it's 50/1 he strikes with a hat-trick.

Johnson can also be backed at 7/1 to pick up five wickets in the first innings and it's 9/2 that he scores a half-century with the bat.

Following the news that Ian Bell will bat at four for England, Sky Bet are offering 13/8 for the Warwickshire man to score a half-century in his first innings. Bell, who has scored a total of 640 runs from 11 innings in Division One of the County Championship, is 7/1 to mark his return with a first innings century and it's 5/6 that he scores over 31.5 runs.

Sky Bet's Tim Reynolds said "With the Edgbaston pitch only producing four results in it's last 20 first class matches and the likelihood of several delays, it's no surprise that the draw had been backed off the boards."

In the series outright, Australia are 5/2 to come from behind and retain the Ashes, with England evens and the draw 9/4.

Sky Bet make Fernando Alonso 2/1 joint favourite with Michael Schumacher to take Felipe Massa's seat at the next Grand Prix in Valencia on August 23rd.

The sight of either the Ferrari legend, Schumacher, or Spanish favourite and rumoured Ferrari 2010 driver, Alonso, in the Ferrari would give the Maranello outfit a huge boost after a poor season so far.

Sky Bet spokesman, Scott Springgay, said: "Renault are banned from the next Grand Prix, which leaves Alonso, who is still eligible to compete, without a drive and it would seem to be a perfect solution for Ferrari to try and 'lease' him for one race in front of his own Spanish fans.

"Of course, Renault boss, Flavio Briatore, will have the final say on that and he may not be happy with that scenario but there are rumours that clauses exist in Alonso's contract that could get him the drive, even against his bosses' wishes."

Schumacher, who was immediately touted as a possible replacement for Massa, is a 2/1 chance to line up for Ferrari in Valencia, despite his manager's assertion that he is "200% sure he will not drive".

Other potential candidates will be BMW drivers, Robert Kubica (14/1) and Nick Heidfeld (20/1), who will soon be out of a job as BMW have announced their withdrawal from Formula 1 at the end of the season.

Another runner could be Jacques Villeneuve, who has been very noticeable around the F1 paddock during recent Grands Prix. However, he has been absent from the F1 racing scene for some time now and is available at 20/1 to replace Massa.

Ferrari test drivers, Luca Badoer 8/1 and Marc Gene 8/1, will both be hoping they are given their chance to step up to the plate and have the advantage of knowing the cars inside out.

Mike Ashley's hopes of selling Newcastle United have been dealt another blow following the withdrawal of interest of potential buyers the Profitable Group and Sky Bet customers have been quick to latch onto the negativity on Tyneside by backing the Magpies to be relegated.

Sky Bet have slashed the odds of the Toon suffering successive relegations to 14/1 (from 33/1) and they have also been popular to finish bottom in the handicap market, prompting Sky Bet to cut their odds to 12/1 (from 18/1).

Sky Bet no longer make Newcastle favourites to win the Championship and they are out to 6/1 (from 9/2) third favourites behind north east rivals Middlesbrough (5/1) and West Brom (11/2). Their odds of achieving a top-half finish have also been eased to 1/3 (from 1/5) following support for them to finish in the bottom half (2/1 from 100/30). Sky Bet have also shifted the line on Newcastle's total season's points from 76.5 to 70.5 and eased them to 2/1 (from 7/4) to beat West Brom (11/10, draw 9/4) in their first match of the season.

Sky Bet's Mike Triffitt said: "With the uncertainty surrounding the management and ownership of the club, coupled with last weekend's embarrassing 6-1 defeat at Orient, punters have been quick to oppose Newcastle in every market and there remain very few positives for the club at present."

Alan Shearer is now 11/10 with Sky Bet to lead Newcastle into the Championship next month, with interim manager Chris Hughton 6/4 still to be in charge on August 8th.

Striker Obafemi Martins is keen to quit Newcastle for Wolfsburg and Sky Bet make him an even money chance to join the German champions this summer and 2/1 to line up at St James' Park.

The Spaniard is set to move teams after hinting he was unhappy with Astana refusing to back him as team leader over Armstrong before the race. It's 4/1 that he has a change of heart and remains with Astana and 20/1 that he races for Team Sky.

Having described his relationship with Lance Armstrong as 'zero', Contador is 66/1 once again to ride with the seven-time Tour champion, who is also leaving Astana to head up a new Radio Shack team next year.

Sky Bet's Chris Kennedy said: "Contador has close links with Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso and it seems certain that he will ride for his team sometime in the future. However, reports suggest that it will probably be 2011 before Alonso has his team ready for the Tour de France and early indications suggest a straight battle between Garmin and Spanish outfit Caisse d'Epargne for Contador's signature."
