<div>Margaret Regan will give a slide lecture about her newest book, Detained and Deported: Stories of Immigrant Families Under Fire, now out in paperback. Focusing on Arizona, the book looks at the fate of undocumented immigrants who are arrested long after they&#8217;ve established lives and families in the United States. They can be held in detention centers, away from their families, or deported back to Mexico or Central America.  The book was named Top Picks in the Southwest Books of the Year and one of 100 Must-Read Books about the Southwest by BookRiot.</div>

<p>In this 3rd installment of sermons about happiness, we will find out if there is a correlation between happiness and music or happiness and pets. We will hear a little about the business of happiness. Last but not least, we will attempt to answer the question, &#8220;Why is happiness important?&#8221; Hearing Happiness I &amp; II is not a prerequisite for understanding this message especially since the important points of I &amp; II will be reviewed.<br />

<p>Buddha&#8217;s teachings on karma explain the relationship between our mind, our actions and our experiences. Karma is like gravity; it&#8217;s not personal, it&#8217;s not singling us out. If we trip and fall, we don&#8217;t get angry with gravity. Understanding how karma functions puts us in control of our life so we can learn to transform, and avoid difficulty, thereby creating the lasting happiness we wish for.</p>

<p>Guest speaker Emrys Staton will share some experiences of living in intentional communities, and how those skills translate into our wider experience of creating strong communities.</p>
<div>Emrys Staton is currently serving as the ministerial intern at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Phoenix. He is a lifelong UU who grew up attending the Prescott UU Fellowship in Prescott, AZ. He received his Masters of Divinity degree in 2012 from the Claremont School of Theology in southern California and a BS degree in geography from University of Arizona in Tucson. His life has taken many twists and turns on the way to ministry, including volunteering with the humanitarian aid organization No More Deaths, working as a graphic designer and solar panel installer, and helping build intentional communities based on faith and on sustainability. One of his favorite UU activities is working with our high school youth as an advisor and chaplain at Camp de Benneville Pines.</div>

Not Necessarily Your Father&#8217;s Day</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>When President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed the first official nationwide Father&#8217;s Day in 1966, he said that in American homes &#8220;we look to the fathers to provide the strength and stability which characterizes the successful family.&#8221; The ideal father we&#8217;re supposed to honor on Father&#8217;s Day teaches his children how to pitch a fastball and replace a fuel pump, donates blood to the Red Cross, keeps his promises, and always &#8212; always &#8212; knows best. Wait a minute: you say you didn&#8217;t have one of those? I didn&#8217;t, either. So what should we celebrate on Father&#8217;s Day?</p>

<div>One hundred years ago this spring, journalist and poet Don Marquis created Archy the cockroach and Mehitabel the alley cat to fill space in a newspaper column.  Over the next twenty years, Archy and Mehitabel provided America with clear-eyed yet charitable observations about the world and the human predicament. Two years ago this summer, I brought them back to help 21st century Americans deal with the troubled times in which we find ourselves.  So what&#8217;s the news from Shinbone Alley this week?</div>

<div><strong>Flower Service</strong></div>
<div><strong> </strong></div>
<p>The service will be led by Rev. Linda Lawrence and church member Terry Zapotocky. The service is multi-generational so the children will participate in the service, and there will be no separate children&#8217;s religious education. We will learn about the origin and meaning of the Flower Celebration or Communion, 1st created by Norbert F. Capek in Prague in 1923.  To celebrate May Day, the children will do a Maypole dance.  They will also make baskets filled with flowers that they will create.  This will be a joyous and colorful service to celebrate 1st day of May.</p>
</div>
</div>
<div></div>
<div>If you have them available, please bring a flower or flowers for the Communion. Flowers to share are appreciated as many of our members don&#8217;t have gardens. And do come regardless of whether you have a flower; there always seem to be an abundance of flowers for everyone.</div>

<div></div>
<div>Our congregation&#8217;s own Jerry Fitzmaurice writes: I have always been interested in how people of different cultures and religions viewed life. So I welcome the opportunity to share some of what I have learned. I will try not to stray into my own beliefs, rather I will share what I have learned from others and what has happened to me along the way.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Speaker Biography</div>
<div>
<div>I was born in Brooklyn. My father was a policeman and my mother, who was a devoted Roman Catholic, saw to it that my brother and I were sent to the Jesuits for our education and comportment. Many novenas to St. Jude were said on our behalf. I received a BS from Fordham University and an MBA from New York Institute of Technology. In 1979 Norine and I married and in 1981 we moved to Arizona. In 2001 we retired and moved to Patagonia, AZ. After about eight years, we were looking for a little more activity which prompted our move to Sierra Vista. Some of Norine&#8217;s friends introduced us to the UUs, and we have been members ever since.</div>

<div><b>The Oneness of Everything: Reflections on my trip to Alaska</b></div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div>
<div>Sharon Travis has been a member of Sky Island since it&#8217;s very first congregational meeting in Feb. 1996 at the Pintek Ranch in Bisbee. On her bucket list, Sharon always wanted to travel to Alaska. Her desire was fueled by hearing Jean MacKeen talk about making the trip planned by WhaleCoast, Alaska.  The tour is sponsored by the four UU congregations in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Juneau, and Sitka, Alaska. Sharon took the two week tour with them in July 2014 and found it so delightful, she is taking the one week trip (the National Park Tour) in June.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Sharon will  provide her perspective of Alaska and how this beautiful state and it&#8217;s people are being impacted by climate change.  She will have an exhibit in the community room of some books, brochures, and a video compiled of photos taken by participants who traveled with her.</div>

<p>We will explore some of the stories and issues raised in this year’s UU Common Read –&#8221;Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption&#8221; by Bryan Stevenson. Although the subject matter of the book is tough – “defending the poor, the wrongly condemned, and those trapped in the furthest reaches of our criminal justice system,” this modern day prophet inspires hope. Might we be “stonecatchers” too?</p>
