Sky Pie is celebrating our Two Year Anniversary!!!

We are entering what a lot of people call the “Terrible Twos” but we are changing that to the “Terrific Twos”!

Having your own company is filled with excitement and also tough times. I reread our First Year Anniversary blog and saw that, talking about the ups and downs, I sometimes wonder why I “didn’t use all my money to buy a year’s supply of Twinkies”. I feel prophetic considering Hostess just went out of business. Why didn’t I invest in Twinkies?! I could be rich! I am truly sad that Hostess is bankrupt. What is Santa going to say without his Ho-ho’s?

Two years ago, I launched the website which is our main way of being accessible to the public. We had a lot happen in our first year: parties, fashion shows, and fun. Our second year has been quite mellow. Part of that is because we were dealing with a printing company that was slow and had less than desirable results. Another reason was that, at the current moment, I am limited to how much time I can spend with Sky Pie because it is not my main source of income. Oh, how I long for that day! Order a shirt or tell a friend to follow us on Facebook and help me get closer to that goal! :)

Nevertheless, we were able to come out with a new line in 2012 with brand new designs, new colors for primary designs, and even introducing baby onesies and toddler shirts! All new shirts can be seen on our Facebook page here.

With the launch of Sky Pie Apparel, I was trying to do something fun and something that could make a difference.

As you probably know, part of our proceeds go to charity, specifically to stop human trafficking. I just wrote a check to Nightlight International and we have you to thank for it! Your support not only gets you a designer shirt, it gives someone a step toward freedom.

Making a Difference is Easier than Scratching a Lotto Ticket

Have you ever stopped and thought, “Do I make a difference in the world?” It sometimes can be very ethereal and far removed because we can often think, “The world is such a big place. How could I possibly change it?”

I was walking down the street and there was an older man sitting at a bus stop. As I went by I noticed that he was scratching off lottery tickets, the big, card type. He had a thick stack of them and after he’d scratch one off, he would chuck it into the street. The street was littered with about 20-30 big lottery cards. I walked on by, not sure what to say. I got about a half block away and thought, “He must really be hurting and missing something deep down.”

I then heard a still, small whisper inside of my brain, “Go talk to him.”

“No!” I reacted. “How awkward!”

However I debated for a little while and finally went back. “Wow, you must be rich!” I kidded.

“Is it a crime to have money?!” he shot back at me. I thought about saying, “No, but littering is,” but I didn’t. I didn’t know what to say. I just said something like I wanted to let you know that God cares about you and loves you.

“God doesn’t exist,” he retorted.

“Yes, God does exist”, I explained. “He told me to come talk to you, and I didn’t want to. I told Him no, but He persisted.” He went on to tell me that he can give me three good reasons why God doesn’t exist… He then named three Latin-American countries. We talked for a little while longer and it was obvious he couldn’t be reasoned with, but I was glad that I had talked to him and at least attempted to brighten his day leaving him with a “have a good day”.

The world is hurting. Maybe instead of “How do I change the world?” the question we should ask ourselves is, “How do I make a difference in someone’s life today?”

At the end of the day, we can ask things like, “Did I make a difference in someone’s life today? Did I show them love? Did I make them laugh? Did I comfort them? Did I rejoice when something good happened to them?”

Even if they reject our love or comfort, did we show compassion to the best of our ability?

Oftentimes it is hard because the world can also be appalling. A car next to me at a stop light was blasting rap music and the chorus of the song was, “You want child support? Pull it out of your a**, b****! You want child support? Pull it out of your a**, b****!” As catchy as choruses are, that was running through my head for the drive home unfortunately.

Now, I like rap music, so I’m not attacking the music, but it is insane the thoughts we as a society have and decide to dwell on. Thoughts of anger and hatred lead to heartache which lead to more anger and hatred which lead to more heartache, and so the cycle goes.

The only way the world can change is if we start small and say, “How do I make a difference in someone’s life today?”

Today marks our One Year Anniversary!!!

They say that most businesses don’t last more than their first year, so I’m happy and proud to say we are still in business! We lasted longer than Kim Kardashian’s marriage! (Sorry. We love you Kim!)

Starting any company is filled with ups and downs, excitement and slow times, happiness and times you wonder why you didn’t use all your money to buy a year’s supply of Twinkies, but I definitely feel like our first year was a success!

With the launch of Sky Pie Apparel, I was trying to do something fun and something that could make a difference.

One year ago today, I launched the website which is our main way of being accessible to the public. Shortly after that we were able to sponsor the Hope in the City fashion show. This year had our First Annual Spring Launch Sky Pie and Tee Party which was a delight. We were able to add new shirts, especially for the Men. Also, we had our first photo shoot which gave us stunning photos for the website.

I’m even more excited about what the future holds! I have a ton of more fun ideas! We have just started pre-ordering a hilarious, new shirt which you get a discount on for pre-ordering. (For more info on that, talk to me or sign up on the website for our email news letter.)

I want to personally thank everyone of you who helped us in some way. Hi there! I hope you had a wonderful weekend celebrating our nations independence! (Or just enjoying life for those fans not in this country.) I had an amazing Fourth of July weekend. One that started as possibly one of the toughest in my life and ended as one of the best!

Sky Pie Apparel’s tagline is “Clothing that Gives Life”. I was so encouraged by this weekend and found it so life giving, that I am willing to allow you to peer into a nice sized window of my soul. There were a lot of laughs to be had and delicious food with more pie than you could toss at the faces of the Ringling Brothers' clowns!

Sky Pie revealed their new spring shirts: a tough looking “Respect Women” shirt in a unisex straight shape for men and women in Air Strike Green as well as in a women’s fitted Paratrooper Green

Shirley Till was at the party sharing information about Nightlight International, an organization that helps stop human trafficking. Part of the party’s proceeds and sales of Sky Pie Apparel merchandise in general goes to Nightlight in hopes that we can rid the world of human slavery!

It boggles my mind to think of how blessed we are to live in America: to enjoy a walk in the park on a sunny afternoon, take a nice country drive, or eat ice cream while watching Seinfeld reruns. Even more so, it amazes me how we can be so cushioned by these nice things that we don’t realize that others have incredibly harder lives which are filled with atrocities.

Sure, we think someone “over there” in a foreign country is hungry or in the midst of war, which is horrible, but we don’t often think of the word “atrocities” being used for dealings in our neighborhood, on our own street, or maybe even right next door.

A personal friend of mine, Kristin Ross Lauterbach, has created a documentary called FLESH: Bought and Sold in the U.S. which looks at human trafficking and prostitution. Did you know the average age a young girl is forced into prostitution is twelve to fourteen? And that is in the U.S.! The time these young girls should be enjoying life, school dances, and spending time with friends.

FLESH calls into question our definitions of slavery, human trafficking, and prostitution in the United States. This is a story told by girls who have escaped and by those still enslaved, by former and current pimps, the abolitionists of today, including numerous directors of non-profit organizations, a former U.S. Ambassador, LAPD vice, and the L.A. City Task Force on Human Trafficking.

One of the non-profit organizations is Nightlight International which part of Sky Pie Apparel proceeds go to.

Hope In The City Fashion Show

Hope In The City

Sky Pie Apparel will be joining the “Hope In The City” fashion show and will be a proud sponsor on March 14th at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles!!!

Hope In The City is the premiere charity fashion event and community for the city of Los Angeles. Organized by Mosaic, Hope In The City creates a space for fashion designers, fashion enthusiasts, models, hair & make-up artists, photographers, and all to come together and use their unique gifts to serve the city and connect with one another to build a community of hope.

Proceeds from the event will be going to the Downtown Women’s Center.

The mission of the Downtown Women’s Center is to provide permanent supportive housing and a safe and healthy community fostering dignity, respect, and personal stability, and to advocate ending homelessness for women.

Where are the men? Where are the men's shirts?

Who in your life would you consider to be a real man? What are the characteristics of a real man?

I’ve found that often a woman is attracted to a man by how he makes her feel. If she feels excited, loved, or safe around him, there is a good chance she will feel attraction. These are great emotions, but can be very deceptive. We’ve all known the woman who was deeply in love with someone we could obviously see was going to be bad for her and end up in heartache.

What is your definition of a real man? For me, the definition is someone who does the right thing at the right time. “A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.” Everyone is going to make mistakes but is he going to be there when the times get tough? Does he treat the people around him, especially his family, with respect even when he doesn’t feel like it? How does he treat the waitress that waits on you?

Look at the men in your life. Do they match up with what it means to be a man or are you “in love” and hope that he’ll change for the better?

I was excited and a little pleasantly surprised when we first opened our doors not too long ago and I got an email from a man wondering if we had men’s shirts, specifically the “Respect Women” shirt. (At this time we just have women’s.)

Shortly after that, one female customer said she wore her Respect shirt in the mall. She was only there 30 minutes, but within those thirty minutes, she received two compliments… and both of them were from men!

I’m happy to say we do have men’s shirts on the way, so think about who in your life might like one. They are in manly colors “Paratrooper Green” , “Texas Sunset”, and “Storm Cloud Gray”.

A good man is hard to find, but it looks like they’re out there!

Time for a Change

Today is #1! (Holding a foam hand #1) Today is #1! Today is 1-1-11!! Happy New Year!!

I love New Year’s. What a great time to reflect, plan out goals, and think of how you can change for the better. It’s so fresh and nice, especially when it’s normally so hard to change. You can see how hard by checking out how crowded a gym is in January versus how less crowded it is just two months later.

Sky Pie Apparel is all about change. We want to change the world in a positive way and strongly support anyone trying to make a change for the better.

But what about the people, other than ourselves, we want, or even NEED, to change?

Someone very close to me is going through a trial separation from her husband. Being the typical “deadbeat dad” he is financially irresponsible (buying a $500 gun when he says he doesn’t have money to buy groceries), unsupportive (coming home late in the night and sleeping most of the day when not at work), and emotionally abusive (making her feel like thing’s are her fault). It got so stressful, she had to leave.

Since she has left, he hasn’t shown much change. He’s gone to church a couple of times but nothing more. I asked him if he wanted to talk, but got no response. Now, there is a video on the internet showing that he is getting back into drugs which he had quit before.

I know the easy way out is just to say to leave him, and maybe ultimately she should, but love is something worth fighting for and there are children who need a good father. She loves him and knows he has good qualities deep down.

To the observer, he obviously needs to change; otherwise, he will lose his family and possibly his house and job.

Apart from going Michael Westen on his behind and hanging him out a window blind folded, what can we do to encourage change or help him to see that he needs to change? Feel free to comment.

GRAND OPENING, Responses to our Philosophy and Shirts

Sky Pie Apparel officially opened their doors last week on November, 23^rd 2010. A red letter day in history! As important as… um, well, I guess that remains to be seen, but I would say at least as important as the invention day of the Flobee! ;)

It’s been a week since we’ve opened and the response has been wonderful! Along with the “fabulous!” and “awesome!” and “keep up the good work!” comments, which I’m very appreciative of, a lot of people really identify with what we are doing. Lisa L. said, “to connect with you over this issue [of respecting women] is a gift. Thank you so much for what you are doing and saying.” Another young lady, Samantha, explained that the timing of this topic really hit home because, since she moved to California, she’s been called ugly by five different guys! We live in such a “looks based” society it boggles my mind!

As far as the shirts, Kayte M., our very first customer, exclaimed, “The shirt fits perfectly and is so comfortable!” Until I can get pictures made, and they are coming, I know some people are a little hesitant about ordering because of what they might look like since we just have the artist rendering.
If you have been gracious or adventurous enough to have bought a shirt already, please email us a picture of you wearing your shirt! It can be in some exotic location or just at home with your domesticated animal. With your permission we can put it up on Facebook or the site! Send it to info@SkyPieApparel.com.

To give you a little more info in the meantime, these are 100% kitten soft cotton, fitted shirts with water based ink for the very soft, comfortable feel. They fit your form and I’m extremely pleased with how they look. I’m especially proud of the printed tag which has something secretly creative that I came up with myself.
Also, the drawings look like they have smaller cap sleeves. They are actually typical t-shirt sleeves, but, again, are fitted.

The Respect Women shirt is what we call “Sunshine Haze” which is a light, very soft yellow opposed to a bright, vivid yellow. The “Sky Pie Blue” is a gorgeous turquoise. Lots of people have commented on what a beautiful blue it is. The “Sunset Pink” is a very bright, lovely pink.
So don't be afraid! I'm so confident you'll like the shirts, that you can return them no questions asked if you don't! Or you can always dust your house with them, but I don't think you will! :)

One of the visions I have for Sky-Pie Apparel is for it to be doing a lot of good in the world even though I’ve long been gone and buried. That is one reason why I am treating the items produced as collectible works of art. All shirts have a limited number produced. I would love for an original, first run Sky-Pie shirt to be sold some day at a benefit auction for thousands, if not millions, of dollars and the proceeds going to charity!

Apart from that, collecting is loads of fun, so my goal with this blog is to give fun updates as well as milestones in the company showing the various lines of collectible clothing.
