The cornuto, corno, or cornicello is an Italian Jewelry Symbol of ancient origin. Corno means “horn” and cornicello means “little horn” — these names refer to a long, gently twisted horn-shaped amulet worn in Italy to protect against the evil eye. Cornicelli are usually carved out of red coral or made of gold or silver. The type of horn they are intended to copy is not a curled-over sheep horn or goat horn but rather like the twisted horn of an African eland or something similar. Over the years they have become rather stylized and now look less like a natural animal horn than they once did. Italian Symbol Jewelry is one of our popular products in both silver and gold. Italian  Hands and Italian Horns have been made by us for many years for the Italian’s in our area. One of our good customers asked us to make a custom pendant with a tumbled Apache Tear. This creates a dilemma for most of us because each side has a different shape and size.  A Custom Pendant like this creates a nightmare  in trying to come up with a way to mount the stone, show it off, and make it look nice enough to wear. Without doing the custom pendant mounting in wax and then casting it, which is what we did not want to do.

A pattern was made so that the custom pendant would display its translucent qualities, then the metal was cut for the custom pendant to allow light to shine through.  It was then given a pre-polished and the stone was mounted.

Our customer loved our idea for mounting this stone in the custom pendant. This technique will serve us well for other tumbled stone custom pendant pieces.

Apache tears are rounded nodules of obsidian (volcanic black glass) with diameter from about 0.5 to 5 cm. An Apache tear looks opaque by reflected light, but translucent when held up to light. The name “Apache tear” comes from a legend of the Apache tribe: about 75 Apaches and the US Cavalry fought on a mountain overlooking what is now Superior, Arizona in the 1870s. Facing defeat, the outnumbered Apache warriors rode their horses off the mountain to their deaths rather than be killed. The wives and families of the warriors cried when they heard of the tragedy; their tears turned into stone on hitting the ground.

Traditional heat sink methods used by Goldsmiths many times will not work with silver and can possibly damage or destroy the stones set in the jewelry.  Silver jewelry also takes more heat for traditional soldering techniques, and of course the bigger the piece the more heat that is necessary. Some repairs can be done in our shop by heat-less methods without removing the stones such as earring posts.

Custom Pendant

One of my customers recently asked if I could  fashion a custom pendant out of a Pink Tourmaline he had acquired. This was a very nice and expensive stone. It was well cut and had very good saturated color with no banding. Tourmaline is a crystal boron silicate mineral compounded with elements such as aluminium, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium, or potassium. Tourmaline is classified as a semi-precious stone and the gem comes in a wide variety of colors. I went straight to the drawing board and decided I needed to add a stone at the bottom of the custom pendant for some aesthetic balance.  He  wanted the custom pendant to be very special. It was going to be a wedding present for a very special relative and the event would be happening soon.

We discussed the Custom  Pendant further and he also wanted it to be made out of Sterling Silver. This stunning white metal was a very good choice for a custom pendant like this with the price of Gold being so high. I decided to make a bezel mounting instead of prong type mounting, keeping the back open to give the custom pendant plenty of light. The bail on the custom pendant needed a little flair so i decided to opened it up also. All in all this was a fun project.

1911 Pistol Pendant

1911 Pistol Pendant

John M. Browning designed the 1911 pistol which was the standard-issue side arm for the United States armed forces from 1911 to 1985.  Since this was the 100th anniversary of one of the great weapons of all time, I thought I should make a 1911 pistol pendant as a tribute to our military and John Browning. This pistol was the backbone of our fighting troops and many shooting sports enthusiasts use these designs today for competition shooting and protection.

is great for shooters and enthusiasts alike, it is all sterling silver with brass handles and has great detail, all hand stamped designs and fabricated with recycled sterling silver. This 1911 pistol pendant is the kind of piece someone would cherish for a lifetime. The 3mm Anchor chain is separate and it is assembled by us for this project.

are of the cast type this piece is hand cut out of sheet material. The designs are then hand stamped into the metal. This Eagle and Arrow Pendant was done to commemorate the 4th of July, a symbol of independence and freedom for our troops in the military far away from home. The Eagle is the same eagle used in many military insignia and on many United States Stamps and Currency of our great country.
