Earth could plunge into sudden ice age

In the film, "The Day After Tomorrow," the world gets gripped in ice within the span of just a few weeks. Now research now suggests an eerily similar event might indeed have occurred in the past.

Looking ahead to the future, there is no reason why such a freeze shouldn't happen again — and in ironic fashion it could be precipitated if ongoing changes in climate force the Greenland ice sheet to suddenly melt, scientists say.

Starting roughly 12,800 years ago, the Northern Hemisphere was gripped by a chill that lasted some 1,300 years. Known by scientists as the Younger Dryas and nicknamed the"Big Freeze," geological evidence suggests it was brought on when a vast pulse of fresh water — a greater volume than all of North America's Great Lakes combined — poured into the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans.

This abrupt influx, caused when the glacial Lake Agassiz in North America burst its banks, diluted the circulation of warmer water in the North Atlantic, bringing this "conveyer belt" to a halt. Without this warming influence, evidence shows that temperatures across the Northern Hemisphere plummeted.

Melting Himalayan glaciers threaten 1.3 billion Asians

KATHMANDU — More than a billion people in Asia depend on Himalayan glaciers for water, but experts say they are melting at an alarming rate, threatening to bring drought to large swathes of the continent.

Glaciers in the Himalayas, a 2,400-kilometre (1,500-mile) range that sweeps through Pakistan, India, China, Nepal and Bhutan, provide headwaters for Asia's nine largest rivers, lifelines for the 1.3 billion people who live downstream.

But temperatures in the region have increased by between 0.15 and 0.6 degrees Celsius (0.27 and 1.08 degrees Fahrenheit) each decade for the last 30 years, dramatically accelerating the rate at which glaciers are shrinking.

As world leaders gather in Copenhagen this month for a crucial climate change summit, campaigners warn that some Himalayan glaciers could disappear altogether within a few decades.

"Scientists predict that most glaciers will be gone in 40 years as a result of climate change," said Prashant Singh, leader of environmental group WWF's Climate for Life campaign.

"The deal reached at Copenhagen will have huge ramifications for the lives of hundreds of millions of people living in the Himalayan drainage systems who are already highly vulnerable due to widespread poverty."

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a UN body regarded as the world's top authority on climate change, has warned Himalayan glaciers could "disappear altogether by 2035" and experts say the effects of global warming are already being felt in the region.

<img src="http://www.wlcntv.com/media/uploads/articles/tsunami.jpg" height="150"alt="" align="left" />The tsunami that killed more than 200 people in the Samoan islands and Tonga in September was twice as tall as the buildings it hit, scientists say.

The wall of water towered 14m (46ft) and included as many as three major waves, researchers have found.

The waves were caused by a magnitude 8.0 earthquake under the sea.

New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research has been studying the tsunami to help guard against future events.

A team of scientists under NIWA spent two weeks in the field and found the second of two to three significant waves was said by witnesses to be larger.

The delay between the earthquake and the arrival of the first wave was about 10 minutes in Samoa and 20 minutes in American Samoa, the NIWA scientists said.

The Norwegian Metrological Institute has received hundreds of phonecalls from confused observers but so far has been unable to identify its origin.

Some experts have speculated that the phenomenon might have been caused by a Russian rocket launch. However, the Russian embassy insists such claims are completely unfounded.

Neither meteorologists, astronomers, or the Armed Forces have offered a solution to the matter.

The light was captured by amateur photographer Jan Petter Jorgensen while he was on his way to work at a salmon factory.

"The light appeared for 2-3 minutes. I could not believe my eyes, and got the shivers and was quite shaken by it", Mr Jorgensen said.

Morten Kristiansen, who saw the light phenomena from Sortland in northern Norway, added: " A large ring appeared, and then spread out, sending a green beam down to earth.

Geophysicist Robert Smith and colleagues monitored seismic waves from 800 earthquakes to assemble the most complete image ever published of the 500-mile "plumbing" system under Yellowstone National Park, suggesting its bottom is at least 400 miles deep in the Earth's mantle, directly under the southwest Montana town of Wisdom.

The plume's angled rise offers proof that the mantle, the 1,800-mile thick rocky shell surrounding the Earth's core, is in motion, Smith said.

The magnetic polarity of the spot identifies it as a member of Solar Cycle 24--the cycle we've been waiting for to end the deepest solar minimum in nearly a century. One spot isn't enough to end the lull, but sunspot 1035 could herald bigger things to come.

There is a New Age evolving, and it's maturing into a much more sophisticated version than the crystal-crazed 80's we once knew. With the onset of terrorism, economic collapse and environmental disaster, it's time for the return of the New Age.

As thirty percent of Americans now call themselves "spiritual but not religious," a New Age is the way to unite and achieve a better world agenda.

Teena Booth, a journalist, novelist and screenwriter (The Natalee Holloway Story) will discuss why New Age is making a comeback as described in her most recent book "Unfinished Evolution: How a New Age Revival Can Change Your Life and Save the World"

Massive Blackout Plunges Brazil Into Darkness

Much of Brazil was plunged into darkness last night as a problem at a hydroelectric dam left millions without electricity.

As these eerie pictures show, the major cities, such as Rio de Janeiro - the home of the 2016 Olympic Games - were left looking like ghost towns, with only car headlights, candles, and the odd power generator providing tiny pools of illumination for millions.

Other cities such as Sao Paulo were also left in blackness for more than two hours, while all of neighbouring Paraguay was also without power for half an hour.
