So had wordpress installed through Fantastico but then again didn’t have time nor the patience to sit and learn how it works so gathered dust for 1 1/2 years even after proper installation.

The guest was kept on hold by the host for a TV commercial and when he came back the Liberty shoes stock was already 5% up in a minute !!!.

He was talking all negative about the stock and the losses the company was making.. He was taking about 90 levels and the stock was already Rs. 103 !!!

So when to yahoo finance and checked.

Feb 21 2012 at 9:40am as he started taking the Liberty Shoes share went up from 90 to 105.60 by 9:50am and within 5 minutes it fell down by 2 % (the yahoo finance charts are of 5 minute intervals)

The spike showed 1,29,800 shared transacted in 5 minutes !!!

till 13th Feb the daily volume was between 5900 to 30000 but on 14th Feb 2012 there were 2,37,100 shares transacted and after that till 21st Feb 30 to 60 thousand but on 21st 1,29,800.

Which means the EXPERT had rigged this stock with CNBC Awaaz channel on 14th Feb 2012 itself !!!

And the people who bought those 2.37 Lakh shares at 91.10  is selling them at these higher prices on daily basis.

What does it mean… some fellows made a killing Rs. 22 Lakhs in trading profit within a week !

Security – Winner: Linux

In terms of raw security, it’s really quite hard to do better than any available Linux distribution. This has to do with the very way in which Linux is coded—including Unix branches of the operating system, if you were wondering. Unlike Windows, Linux has a superuser known simply as “root.” To access this level of control, a webmaster must have a direct connection to the server shell, as well as the password of the server itself. Once this link has been established, an administrator can do basically anything they’d like to the server, including the hacking and stealing of precious data. However, because this level of authority requires root access—and simply cannot be had any other way—it’s nearly impossible for an artificial-intelligence based virus to “hack” into a Linux system. The probe would first need to tunnel into the server, establishing itself as a secure connection. Next, it would need to know the master password, which theoretically could be hacked, though to little purpose. Once inside the server, the bug would still need to pass several security checks to access privileged folders, guaranteeing a much harder fight than with Windows.

Windows, it’s worth noting, features little to no administrative control, a la the “root” user. Rather, the server establishes a single account as its admin, and then ties a password to that user. However, because of the registry that lies at the heart of a Windows system, it’s relatively easy for a digital worm to wind its way into the heart of the hardware, accessing files as it pleases and relaying the found data back to another server: Or worse! All in all, Linux simply cannot be bested in terms of its superior security from outside threats.

However, Windows does have the upper hand in terms of technical assistance and support. Because Windows is a proprietary operating system, it comes fully backed by a team of Microsoft specialists that will help and guide you through any unexpected errors or struggles. These lines and forums are available 24/7, 365 days a year, and can assist with any and all malfunctions. They will typically even perform some of the procedure for you, saving you the need to get your hands dirty with code.

Linux, on the other hand, historically comes with no dedicated technical assistance, save the community itself. And though the world of Linux troubleshooting is alive and well across hundreds of forums spread out across the globe, there’s simply no solid body to deal with the thousands of Linux variations and distributions that float freely in existence. Rather, it is ultimately the webmaster who must deal first-hand with technical complications, and if no quick solution is available, that webmaster’s server may be in real steep stuff.

That being said, Linux easily takes the cake in terms of raw overhead investment. Rare is a Linux distribution that costs anything, as most are available for free via the GNU public commons agreement. Furthermore, should some enterprising webmaster wish to create their own variation of the operating system, they’re fully licensed to do so, as Linux is typically available in its entirety for free redistribution. Windows, however, must be purchased with a server license, which can be quite expensive. Further, technical assistance and software come at a premium, where Linux is loaded to the gills with freeware packages optimized for the system. But as mentioned, this corner cutting in a budgetary sense also comes with a lack of dedicated problem solving support. The difference is really like buying a used car, as opposed to leasing one: Should a problem arise with the used automobile, you’re very likely up a certain creek without a means of locomotion. Should the leased vehicle fail, there’s always an helping hand nearby, ready to handle your needs.

Performance and Up-Time – Winner: Linux

Lastly, if you’re looking for the final word in performance and up-time, Linux is hands down your top pick. A Linux system absolutely never requires a reboot because of a software update, nor does it ever necessitate a restart to unclog the processes. The operating system has been designed from the ground up to create dedicated threads for each open application, activating these threads when needed and closing them when unneeded. With this in mind, it’s nearly impossible to hijack a shell tunnel, providing an infinitely more secure experience, and at no cost to your overall control.

I would usually email the file to a colleague in office who would print it for me…

But thats not required… thanks to Google Cloud Print.

This is the setup…
I have a HP laserJet 1010 in my office network. The work horse bill printer for last 6 years where 90% of all my office print jobs are done.
The PC its connected to uses Google Chrome browser and while exploring the options in setup found this option of Google Cloud Print.

All it requires is both the accounts should sign in using the same Google id. Or the google id on that particular desk needs to permit the another user to share the service.

Once I login into internet and signin to Google Chrome account there are additional printers from the remote computer listed in the list.

Just fire a print without installing any drivers on the netbook and as and when the office computer is switched on and goes online the print job will get activated and printed on the specified printer !!!

Folding Multifunction Storage Stool Seat Box For Rs. 199

Well its true the product is sold for Rs. 199 some say its sold offline for Rs. 100 too. ( I couldn’t find any but will keep trying)

These stools have a problem… They are made from thin hardboard. It can occasionally take 60Kgs but more than 20 Kgs regular use it will bend and collapse.

They are very well suited for Maruti Eeco and form a bed in the 2nd row gap as well as act as extra seats for 3rd row in my 5 Seater car.

To over come the problem. I designed a skeleton which will take the entire weight and use the hardboard for asthetics.

The metal frame slides in the stool and gives it strength.

Position 1 : it works as a stool and can take even 200kgs
Position2 : It works as a storage container which can be used to stack pillows or stuff we keep in car or like me an icebox so water bottles dont’ warmup during long drives.

Weight : just : 5.286Kgs
Cost :
Rs. 200 each for the chinese stool
Rs. 250 each for fabrication
Rs. 20 – 50 each for colour (I used a spare spray can)

Well all cars now have a waiting period so need to start atleast 2 months so can get delivery on date i need.

So first choice for test drive was Hyundai Eon.

Well Hyundai Eon is the latest and most happening car in India with some 20,000 bookings done pre-launch so with a hype gave it a try and visted a Hyundai showroom in Pune.

While reversing i thought the engine had stalled well there was very low noise coming from engine inside the passenger compartment but hell no POWER !!!

It was very sluggish and i was driving the top end Sports model of some 4.5 Lakhs !!!

So from the side road test drive on bad roads (almost all bumps were felt from the potholes) The steering wheel was vibrating, the gear shift was vibrating, the car body was vibrating and the car had just clocked 500kms !!! The idot even said they had disconnected the spedometer cable so mileage is not logged !!! thats not possible. No one will take a test drive of a 20 days old car without a speedometer and 500kms in 20 days on a demo car is acceptable. This sales man was Lying.

Ok so I took it on the Pune Bangalore highway for 1 km and was pushing the pedal but car was not picking up speed. Well my poor Maruti Eeco would beat this car even though its cheaper that this model by a Lakh. It was worse than even a Maruti 800 I previously owned.

Well next I went the the DSK Toyota Showroom just across the road at Baner.

They didn’t have the the demo Petrol Car which had gone to their Model Colony showroom in Pune so returned disappointed.  Left my number but the sales buggers had not called.

So finally went to the GM showroom near Sus. I talked to a salesman who made frantic calls and went and met some people to give me a horrible news. The demo car had met with an accident and is in workshop for repairs !!!

He took my number but still waiting him to give me a call and a test drive of the Chevrolet Spark. I doubt it will happen.

So only 2 contenders remain to fit my requirement…

The TATA Nano which is pathetic on highway with max speed of 80kmph or the Maruti Suzuki Alto (not the K10 because you cannot fit the CNG or LPG gas kit in it).

Maruti Suzuki is not that good either I am still awaiting my NCB cheque and did had a share of bad experience with their staff who in most cases are ill informed.

I have heard 1 year old Nano LX (the top variant with A/c) now are available as low as 1.5 Lakhs !!! with just under 6000 kms running so might as well worth a try.

But 1 thing is for sure that Hyundai Eon is out from my 1st list of cars.

I had a Maruti 800 5 speed top end model of 2000. 10 year old car so decided to move on since in last 5 years virtually had repaced half of the car parts and still it needed more.

So decided to replace it with a new car and family chose the Maruti Suzuki Eeco to suite best for our requirements.

Well so in April visited Maruti Suzuki showroom of Chowgule Industries at Ambegaon in Pune. The guys were courtious but my experience with Pandit Auto, Tilak Road Pune was pretty bad since those buggers really didn’t care.

So 1st week of May gave my cheques to Chowgule Industries Pune the authorized dealer for Maruti Suzuki.

I was given a ransom offer. Literary speaking it was so…

Trade in your old car and we will give you the new car in 15 days or wait for 2 months  if you don’t. Well that’s the reason why Maruti Truevalue has cars to sell.

I don’t like loan so had saved money for the new car for over 3 years. I was offered a pathetic 45,000 for my Maruti 800 but was forced to go for it because I needed delivery fast.

Paid the full amount minus the 45000 for my trade-in and to my surprise they arranged for my eeco within 3 days of full payment. for a car which has over 2 months waiting !!! fellow at Maruti Suzuki sure are cheating their customers to use the full money before the car delivery.

I chose the 5 seater version because it had A/c not the one with CNG because they charge 1 Lakh extra bloody hell… I got CNG fitted outside for Rs.28000.

I was insisting on ICICI Lombard for the car policy (big mistake)but they insisted on Royal Sundaram because they got better commission.

Maruti Eeco is a pretty powerful car. It went to a fellow in Pune Mr. Milind Date of Minda Enterprises for CNG fitment.

This bugger turned out to be another night mare.

* This fellow gave me a quote of 27000 but on billing charged 28000.
* He fitted a standard CNG flange which pinches the air pipe giving very less air input so car delivers less power.
* To compensate he actually removed my car’s air filter (was driving it for 2000 kms without it !!!)
* I had to buy a modified flange for Rs. 600 took it to him and got it fitted after which the air intake improved .
* It took over 1 1/2 months to get the CNG stamping on the RC book.
* He fitted the CNG in-let valve in such a position that it was very difficult to fill gas at the CNG station so had to force him to change the inlet position.
* He gave false info as the 65ltr tank will fit in 12 kgs of CNG while max is just 9.3 kgs !!! but barely fills enough to travel 130 kms on Mumbai Pune Express way with A/C on.
* It takes 1 hour on an average to fill CNG in my car due to high priority to Autorickshaw drivers.
* Its never full 9 kgs its always anywhere from 6 to 8 kgs of CNG depending on the pressure.

Coming back to the point. My Maruti 800 was of Mumbai RTO and at the time of trade-in was told the transfer RC and other stuff will take 2 months so didn’t give attention.

After 2 months I contacted Chowgule Industries for my transfer RC since i need to put a No Claim bonus for my new car. 10000 bucks of insurance after the NCB comes down to 6000. The fellow whom i did paperwork starting giving me stupid standard replies. He even refused to disclose when my car was sold by Maruti Truevalue and to whom.

So had to visit the Chowgule Industries 7 love showroom at Pune and buggers told me after venting my anger that its sold in Satara.

I was given a lot of standard replies and finally after 4 months !! was given a RC reciept. It took it to ICICI Lombard General Insurance but those idots wanted the copy of the Transfer RC and not just the reciept. It had to go to their office 3 times and each time was given a cold shoulder.

After 5 months !!! i came to know that some agent bought my car in Pune and sold it to an agent in Satara who sold it to a fellow in Karad. Since my car had 5 months of insurance left he purposely delayed the transfer and the guys at Maruti Truevalue were hand in glove with these guys all the time and i was kept in dark.

Finally just days before the insurance expiry i got numbers of all the agents involved and started aggressive followup and finally got the fax of transfer RC.

Armed with this document went to ICICI Lombard office in Pune and asked them to process  the NCB reserving letter. This time i was agressive and insisting on processing it. They wanted me to give details like telephone number of owner, the new insurance policy, Maruti Truevalue agent who sold it and what not.

I had to yell at that girl who gave me cold shoulder 3 times before {[t was my day ] . I don’t know the fellow whom the car is sold. I don’t care if the insurance policy is renewed (still the policy had 10 days to expiry). Looking at my attitude she issued the NCB letter the next day.

Do you think the Maruti Suzuki’s Chowgule Industries would stop at that ? Hell  NO there was more in store for me.

I took this NCB letter to Chowgule Industries Tawde colony office in Pune to submit the letter and pay for adding the CNG fitting to my insurance policy.

There I met with a representative called Archana who said since the new car is already 5 months you should claim for NCB during renewal.

I was fuming with rage !!! They forced to do an exchange. They delayed in giving me the Transfer RC and now they refused to take the NCB for my new car stating its valid for next 3 years !!!

She went back to her desk and came back asking do you want to encash NCB. Well I say hell yess !!! I had already did a big mistake of not claming insurance for all these years atleast I would get 4500 back atleast.

she again went to her desk and came back asking me to write an application letter to encash NCB but this time she said I will get 4500 bucks back from the new policy plus 50% discount on my renewal. What the hell was it when she asked me to claim it next year instead of this one ?

Finally my agonizing ordeal seeming to be coming to an end. Hope there is nothing more in store for me.

Well we are now approaching Diwali and all retailers and e-retailers are gearing up for a mega sale.

Today that’s 01-Oct-2011 Reliance came out with a full page advert in a local popular Marathi news paper Sakal at Pune

Super low prices for many electronic items and I wanted to buy a low cost netbook for my daughter so at 8:30 decided its Saturday morning no work load in the 1st half why not give it a try.

The offer was of a store in Aundh. To my dismay reaching there at 9:30am found the store will open at 11:00am. These idots should have published the time of opening of the store so called a few friends and met them at Aundh and reached the store at 11.

Some event management company called gold leaf entertainment had organized a horrible opening ceremony.

at exactly 11:15am the store doors were opened and people rushed in like crazy. It was a funny sight that Reliance Digital sales men were not present any where!!! they arrived approx 5 minutes later to the counters.

Till then there was a frenzy to grab things (especially the 1 TB Segate external hard disk). People were brabbing and pulling. Again the idot sales men instead of removing the pallets of 3 and make them individual let the customers tear the security measure to get to their item.

Well within 11:20am all the special offer items were grabbed by people. Yes withing 5 minutes of opening the store they were all gone.

Now Reliance Digital Salesmen are know to be customer unfriendly they had to show their distasteful side and they did.

* Almost all the sales counters were disorganized.
* For CC transaction of over Rs.7000 customer has to submit a zerox of ID card and sign on it. (That’s the weirdest thing to happen. I never had to face this at any other store till date).
* The special offer was valid only for 1 item per customer. I needed Netbook and External Harddisk. I had to chose only 1 of them. (so asked my friend to bill in his name and I paid by my Credit card LOL that weird again)
*  I had to sign in atleast 4 different forms of customer feed backs.
* The salesman insisted I take to a counter which had guys with Reliance ResQ on their T shirts.

These ResQ  idiots were not there to help but confuse customers forcing the sealed laptops and netbooks to be opened and insisting they doing the configuration on the spot. WHY !!!

They even insisted on taking some extended warranty for the products which I refused because Acer is an equally bad company just 6 months in launching laptops their service centers run out of motherboards and laptop turns to a brick.

Finally at 12:30 I was able to walk out of the store with the items of my choice. Well leaving a bad taste of poor service at the Reliance Digital Outlet at Aundh.

Well if you want to buy some stuff in special offers see to it you reach the store at 10:30am and do take a BP bill with you because the chaos and mismanagement by the Reliance Digital staff will give you high BP.

Well I had no regrets spending over 4 hours just to buy a netbook. It was a learning experience.

BTW do you remember during 1st day of Ganpati Reliance Digital came out with a super duper offer of 32″ LCD TV for 10,000 bucks.

Well I managed to locate some fellows who took that offer and frankly they repented because within a week Reliance Digital dishonored it and asked customers to either take their money back or pay higher for a Videocon 32″ LCD TV.

I just got myself a MTS high speed data card for FREE !!!

That too prepaid and no strings attached. Only thing its locked to the MTS network.

Yup a company in Pune was offering this on purchase of FRC998 voucher from MTS (3 GB for 3 months broadband ). So works out to Rs. 333 for 1GB per month which is reasonable and better speeds then Reliance netconnect+ for home use.

Best part of these prepaid plans are one can use the entire 3 GB in 1 month or spread across 3 months or keep the dongle in cupboard for 2 months and used it in the 3rd month (Its that flexible) unlike post paid which gets lapsed on the next billing cycle.

You would naturally ask why didn’t I go for the 3G. Well I don’t need it.

On a recent show of Tech Guru the anchor was candid enough to state dual core and then quad core and what not but for a decent tablet experience a single core is more than good enough.

Same way instead of buying over expensive 3G connection. I would any time prefer the 3.1Mbps service over the 7Mbps 3G because finally 3 things matter

* Throughput at peak loads (when everyone is accessing internet in the area)
* Cost
* Do you really need the expensive blazing speeds or a free modem with a flexible prepaid plan is better

BTW Reliance has a wonderful plan for its Netconnect+. Rs. 3000 for 6 months for 18GB. You heard it right. You can use that 18GB flexibly over the 6 months period. Like for my last 10days of contact i have 2.5GB data transfer still remaining so guys in office are downloading heavy files like softwares, songs, games and what not when i an not in office

A lot has changed in last 8 months of this post and people still come to this page hunting so decided it needs update.

MTS is a doomed company. They are just short of launching a good plan and capturing the market. I had got calls from their customer service department asking for my feedback.

Its was the best product because unlike other companies this modem was coming free with a good data plan and a reliable and fast network. Well it ends there… the renewals are simply too expensive for regular users. I have about 4 MTS dongles in office bought only for the First recharge offer.

Is there an alternative… yes found one

Airtel 3G. Well you might not know but 3G rates for 7.2mbps are the same as 3.1mbps speeds. In case of Reliance 3G rates are the same as netconnect+ (CDMA) rates.

Now the offer… Airtel 3G with dongle is the cheapest one can find… the offer is 3.5GB for 3 months for Rs. 1700 that too with modem, that too unlocked so no code breaking service required and its a 7.2Mbps device.

Airtel has a 3G tieups with Idea Cellular and Vodafone. Both these are expensive but at no extra cost you can use your Airtel 3G on Idea and Vodafone. So you have 3 premium networks to chose from.

Speeds are fantastic. No line drops (major problem with reliance netconnect+). No hidden charges since its a pre-paid.  Liberty to change service provider but still the dongle will work since its unlocked. Yes it works well with Android too ( CDMA netconnect nor photon worked with my Android device).

Over all Airtel 3G is cheaper than all other service providers. If I don’t want 3G I can switch easily to 2G and have 2.5GB for Rs. 69 per month from TataDocomo on the same device.

We many times want to speak to a person urgent but that phone is switched off or out of coverage area.

We keep calling and calling at different time intervals with a doubt that if that person switches on or comes in coverage would call back or not. Well there is no need to buy some mobile tracking app or something.

There is a simple easy solution on your mobile handset itself. Its there on every handset whether a smart phone or a phone costing Rs.800.

This is how you do it.

In your mobile -> Messages -> message settings -> Common settings -> Delivery report -> tick

Then when you send sms to the person the message will leave your mobile but as soon as its delivered you get a message back of delivery report.

Which means the mobile is in coverage area or that bugger has switched on the phone.

Apart from good English its important to learn the accent. Especially the American Accent.

But arn’t we starting over doing it ?

Its important to understand and speak American accent you need to understand what that fellow is saying and you need to speak in his language. But I rather prefer the neutral accent used by the BBC.

About a week back i got a call from an Indian portal about a listing I put on their site on my requirements. This bugger started talking in American Accent that too with an Indian within India !!!

I got annoyed and played my trick of speaking with him in the Liver pool English which was difficult for that bugger to understand which forced him to talk in regular Indian English.

Well in India every 100kms the local language changes or the dialect changes but do you know that the Firangi land (UK) has the same thing.

Every city has its own unique dialect and funny part is if a Scotish fellow starts speaking with a fellow from Manchester. Both have a language problem even though its English.

Coming back to the point of the American Accent. Do we really need that in India to talk to Indians. What do these Idots think living in India and speaking with indian in Firangi tone they become foreigners HAHAHAHAH……

I asked him what’s it about. He said Chat. But I was unsure he was disclosing what he wanted. Rather he was trying to hide something from me.

Well after about 15 minutes he opened up slightly.

He had an Idea but unwilling to share. He said he would disclose it after signing a Non disclosure agreement. Well fine…

He has no money to work on the project.
He has no prior experience in the field.
He has no mentor from the field who can guide him
He has no technical staff.
He doesn’t know the hell of the business and wants to jump in.

This fellow was quoted Rs. 50,000 to build a project like Shiksha.com but had absolutely no idea of how a project has to be executed. Rather i felt he was fueling his alter ego for free.

When I told him a project like that must have costed Rs. 15 Lakhs he was stunned. It’s simply the salaries of atleast 20 member team for 6 months would easily come to that figure.

People don’t under stand that idea does have its value…

BUT

To implement it requires
* A lot of Conviction
* A lot of perseverance
* A lot of money
* Execution skills

Unless you are convinced on the project VC will throw your papers in the dustbin.

This fellow was inspired by idea of Mark Zuckerberg and saw him steal the idea or something in the film Facebook. BUT this fellow only saw the success and the money but failed to notice Mark’s belief and conviction in the idea that it will work. The 2 brothers who got the so called original idea might not have even attempted to explore it.

There are thousands of Ideas people have each day but 0.0000000001% get to see implemented half heartedly.

Sabir Bhatia a very bright mind and successful entrepreneur sold his company Hotmail.com to Microsoft. But then he started Arzoo a travel portal half heartedly and it failed even though he had to money and the fame and the biggest success story behind him

Conclusion is
* If you have an idea write it down
* If you have written it down explore if you have the passion to pursue it.
* If you have the passion; acquire skills and knowledge required to achieve it.

I fortunately know few Venture Capitalists who invest in new ideas (since I host some of their projects). They clearly say we don’t look at the project at its face value. We rather strive to see If the person coming up with the proposal has the conviction and knowledge.

Many times the idea might not be new but the inventor might be so much driven by the idea and convinced and did his homework well that we are tempted to put our money in the project. We have the money and are ready to stake it on a good idea. If the person with the idea doesn’t show his passion about it, its no point considering the proposal even though its very unique.

I cannot forget the line ” We stake our money not just on the idea but on that fellow”

People who became successful didn’t do so overnight. Some took well over a decade to come to the level they are at.

I live in India but a major part of the last decade has been virtually in USA.

USA vendors, USA suppliers, USA based customers, USA based phone number and till few years back a USA based address (since my brother lived there).

All electronics like laptop, PDA, routers, lan cards, memory cards, cameras, toys were purchased in USA and someone carried them to India since till very recently they were very expensive in India.

I did understand that who so ever brings in will burden an obligation too but couldn’t help.

Well not with sheer chance but hard search I found a site which for a fee of $45 gives a permanent USA address not just that but also a UK and a China address.

Yup no more pestering friends to get batteries from USA or HDMI cable from Singapore.

 Most Ebay sellers do provide India shipping but some critical stuff I need sadly doesn’t have one and some do but they are prohibitively expensive.

Here is the site http://www.shopandship.com which can take local delivery within these 3 countries and ship the goods to your address even in India via Aramex couriers.

They also have a list of china based wholesaler sites which entertain drop-ship service. Like a 7” android 2.2 netbook for just ($72) Rs. 3276 plus customs or a 10” android netbook for Rs. 5300 apart from shipping charges from that drop ship address to India

There is a catch… if you publish the address someone might send your junk product brochures and you pay shipping charges for that and sadly there is no facility to club shipping from different vendors.U$10 to 18 per shipment is a bit expensive but it far outweighs making your relatives carry jars of pickles to USA.

 NIGHTMARE

 Well it feels great to have the super economy CNG kit fitted in the car for a whopping Rs. 28000 now you feel you can drive on Air… well now read on…

 This is my experience in Pune and common with other cities too…

 1) CNG car owners are second grade citizens at petrol pumps.

 Well 1^st priority is always given to Rickshaws. Out of 4 dispensers 3 are reserved for rickshaws and the only 1 for cars is rationed. 4 rickshaws then 1 car.

 2) Practice Yoga  because you need a lot of patience because just 200 bucks of CNG can disrupt your schedule by 1 hour at the gas pump.

3) You need luck : 1 out of 3 times you visit a CNG station the CNG is over and need to wait for 1 hour for the truck to arrive.

4) 14Kg tank means just 9 Kg of CNG. The CNG fitters just to sell state the 14Kg tank can hold 12Kg CNG but they don’t state the pumps can fill only 9kg and some times just 6kgs.

5) Engaged : A lot of your time will revolve around a CNG station because with just 150kms of travel on a tank will make you visit a CNG station atleast 8-10 times a month.

6) Never expect a fair transaction : If the bill is 127 for get the 3 bucks if the bill is 225 you have to pay 230 because the attendant will NEVER GIVE YOU THE REMAINIG CHANGE.

7) Leave the car back home for long journey : if you need to travel 600kms leave the CNG car because you get only 150kms  so remaining 450kms you need to drive on petrol and don’t forget the 70kg extra permanent passenger the gas tank which will reduce your petrol mileage drastically.

8 ) CNG means driving a school bus : Well the fitting involves modifying the Air intake and changing air filter. Your car will drive sluggish no matter you switch to petrol the pick up will be very slow.

9)  Except for Mumbai – Ahmedabad and Mumbai – Pune CNG is not available anywhere in western India.

10) Dream of a Pressure Gauge : after visiting 6-10 times a month you will start dreaming of a pressure gauge at the CNG dispenser because 170psi means 6kg, 180psi means 8 kgs, 220psi means 9.3kgs of gas.

11) Learn a new terminology : “ Kita pressure hey” that’s the first thing you will ask at a CNG station.

12) Permanently sacrifice boot space : Now you need to ration as how much luggage your family can carry include number of clothes because either they sit with their bags on the lap or install a carrier which will increase your car’s drag coefficient by atleast 5 times so you need to really push the pedal hard to achieve speed.

Well I felt I made a big mistake of installing a CNG kit. I was happy with my LPG kit in my previous car where I could get LPG at almost everywhere in Maharashtra even though it was expensive than CNG it was better then petrol, better mileage, no knocking, no loss of power and a sleek tank to leave space for luggage.

CNG range : 150kms max

LPG range :  270-300 kms

But I love to see the boring news analysis by the reporters and hats off to them. They really do their job unbiased and informed.

During one such on NDTV India when Srinivasan Jain asked Bharat Shah as why Zaveri Bazar was repeatedly target he gave all the regular stats of business but then Srinivasan put a googly to him.

Your Diamond Trading Centre at Bandra Kurla Complex is ready for a decade why haven’t you shifted out there which is a fully secure place. Well Bharat Shah was lost for words and then gave a lame excuse we will shift there in 2 years time. To which Srinivasan shook his head in dismay.

Well the Jewellers nor the Diamond merchants want to move to the DTC at BKC because all their black transactions would come out in open (that the precise reason why the DTC was convieved) and they are too cozy at the Pancharatna Building.

So well if they decide not to move, they have to accept it with all the perrels and all the people who are direcindirectly connected with the trade.

Well i found this site http://cutmp3.net/ very simple interface. just select the sound file from local desktop and edit the start and end portions from the sound graph.

The recent best ones are from the Delly belly’s Bhaag Bhosadekay well you call it civilized Bose Dk or something really dont care but the spanish guitar and the electric guitar 16 second samples are really great; hats off to Ram Sampath. I made each of them as seperate ringtones for each of my cell numbers.

Yes, almost all domain extensions have privacy / anonymity facility to prevent the website owners information made public while the correct admin details remain in the account thus honouring the ICANN rules.

But this doesn’t apply to the .IN registry. For god knows what reason .IN registry refuses to implement the privacy feature exposing unnecessary personal information to hackers, competitors and sleezy characters.

Owners of Bajaj Pulsars especially the higher end really don’t buy bikes for mileage. Its for performance and its accepted the average will not be more then 30-35 kms per litre.

My Pulsar 180DTSi gives an average of just about 28-30 Kmpl because of my bad habits.

So with recent petrol hike upto 70 per litre decided on hypermiling.

Now if you read most suggestions about hypermiling they are impractical.

Like in cars drive with windows closed and A/c off !!! man i would cook like a chicken inside it. While some are down right illegal like rolling stop in neutral at signals or closing the front grill vents to reduce wind resistance or even sitting in an odd posture on bike to reduce wind resistance by the rider or riding the downhill slope in neutral (very dangerous because its easy to lose control)

Plus some are down right BORING. even a rickshaw will overtake you and the driver will look back as what you are doing.

BUT there is a practical way i found out and it worked on my Pulsar 180 DTSi and without humiliation or being awfully boring.

Here are the tips you can use yourself.
1) If stopping at the signal for more than 30 seconds switch off the bike. Because the push button start can start it in just 2 seconds saving a lot of fuel especially at 80 second stops.
2) Tune the carbeurator to 1000 rpm if its higher. Bajaj recommends 1200 rpm but 1000 rpm is still fine any thing lower than that the bike will stall.
3) Drive below 3000 rpm in the right gear. 3000 rpm means about 50kmph on city roads which is reasonable since rickshaws travel at just 35-40kmph so no problem in overtaking them either.
4) Fill enough petrol to take you through the entire week. Daily filling you lose on mileage too much filling to the brim increases weight and vaporation leads to low mileage.
5) Fill petrol early morning like 7-8 am. May be on Sunday take the bike for a spin early morning at 6am to petrol pump on empty roads is fun and leads to savings.
6) Drive at constant speed. Sticking to 45kmph is easy no need to accelerate if you see traffic stopping 50 mtrs away.
7) Instead of the earlier belief good for 2 stroke bikes / MPFI cars. No need to warm up standing for 2 minutes and reving. It causes not just mileage loss but also damages to bike / car. Driving at low speed and at low rpm for 1 km is good enough to warm up the bike and 2kms for a car.
8 ) Start a bit early for office and a bit late for home to avoid peak traffic congestion.
9) Maintain proper tyre pressure ideally buy and keep a tyre pressure gauge at home because ones at petrol pumps are not accurate and ones with tyrewalas are not filled correctly even though they have a proper guage.
10) During monsoon don’t put a top down cover on the bike nor those plastic boards on leg guards (to prevent splasing from road) it prevents ventilation. Over heats a bike and then reduces performance / mileage.

Well, essentially, they would be plugins which are developed by multiple people rather than just one and would deal with the “most popular functionality requests with superlative execution”, explained Jane Wells, writing on the WordPress blog.

Ms Wells has now called on people to provide a new name for canonical plugins, as many have no idea what it means and having to spell it out takes away the focus from the core ideas behind the concept. So, will web hosting users get involved and suggest a new, catchy name?

Hell no… we can’t do that. People who do so are resellers and in 6 months your site will be dead because of his hosting account expiry so any ways you you got a deal of Rs.1200 per year + 1 month of heartburn.

Their site is of just 50MB so that person might not use even 10GB of space in his lifetime. Even if he tries to use it his account will be suspended since their Terms and Conditions would state you cannot store music files, you cannot use server as backup device etc etc…

Then whats the use of unlimited space ? NONE

An interesting observation is a company did comeout with a 5GB webhosting for Rs. 600 per year and today went to see they have revised it to Rs. 4500 for 4GB per year.

Thats interesting to see because even with those extremely low price they were not getting any new customers and was only an act of desperation. They didn’t want to run out of business so revised their hosting plans back to the original ones.

Well they realised in time because its simply uneconomical to host a website at such low amounts  since appart from server rentals there are server administration charges, office expenses, marketing expenses and lot more. Our calculation is a company needs an order of a minimum Rs. 1000 per website to sustain their business and thats precisely what many hosting companies have done.

There is a minimum Rs. 1000 economy plan but the proper plan is anywhere from Rs.1800 to Rs. 2500.

Its simply more the per domain name realization the less number of sites to host on a server to breakeven. Which means as a customer if you pay may be 600 or 800 bucks more you would get a less crowded servers and better service.

But then there are companies who offer unlimited hosting for Rs 2500 per year. Its simply a volume game for them. They want to keep the least number of packages since their customers are normally not tech savy and end up increasing work for sales staff rather delayed sales.

Those clients really don’t need more than 100MB space but are happy with the work UNLIMITED and in their entire contract period will not use more than 50MB webspace so it even’s out. RATHER that hosting company ensures that the customer cannot use even 1% of the space shows as allocated.

Well you wouldn’t because most of the good stuff will be vanished from the trays by the time you reach with your plate. Even during weddings you might realise all the sweets, or dahivada’s or chat or even pulao is over early.

Well then why do you chose unlimited hosting ?

Like unlimited buffet dinner which has limited food; unlimited hosting has limited server resources.

So many times good dishes get over half way through the dinner.

Same way some large requirement customers host on the server at these lower costs and hogg all the resources and you are left with empty trays because they take misadvantage of the situation.

But are they responsible ? NO its the hosting company responsible because they came out with the package which some people can take undue advantage of.

Think again before you fall for the unlimited web hosting and stick to resources based web hosting packages.

1:00pm Sujoy Hospital JVPD Junction, Vile Parle, Mumbai. A brand new Mercedes Benz C220 just out of showroom driving in front of my car….

Crossing the junction there was about 8″ of water on road all cars and auto’s moving slowly and all of a sudden the merc in front had a puff of black smoke and car dead… Rickshaws who were in deeper waters went through with ease and this car dead in middle of the water. Stupid Driver or Stupid Car ?

The shiny white C220 car had a temporary number plate so definitely not run more than 20 kms.

It was really disgusting to see a 35Lakhs car cannot clear an 8″ water while all others went through easily. What happened to the German Engineering. I have heard a lot of bad reviews of Mercedes Benz Bad service in India and witnessed it first had.

I definitely would give this brand a miss…

I was up for a rude shock…

7 Lakhs in cash and Tata Showroom guys at Pandit Auto, Tilak Road, Pune kept ignoring me. My simple requirement was a test drive. Left my details numerious times. Most of the times i visit the showroom the car was out.

Finally had to yell at the sales bastard about my plight and agreed to show me the car but still  didn’t give me a test drive.

So 2nd on my list was Maruti Eeco was not that keen but just went ahead and bough one since needed it for my younger daughter before monsoon for her school and therapy ( she has cerebral palsy).

Maruti claims 30 days waiting but my car was delivered to Pune in just 4 days from Invoicing and delivery within 12 days of taking a decision. And have now driven it for 2 weeks 250kms and I am impressed.

The car is nimble (but not in climbing ghats), spacious and well built. The ground clearance is better than most other cars with poor plastics on dash (thats to expect of Maruti Suzuki).

But overall turned out to be a good decision and the maruti showroom sales guy was good.

and this occured one more time…

All my cars and bikes have an amusing fact that either it has the number Nine “9″ in the number plate or 1st 2 digits total as nine. Insisted the sales guy not to bother about special number and let what ever number come in for registration…

and then it happened… The new number is 5474 again 1st 2 digits total as 9.

I am not an idot to freak out some numerology stuff its just amusing for the condicene to happen over and over again check some of my number plated

Tried :
1) Called customer support on 121. They blaimed I must have accidently subscribed for it (which i have not) while today found hundereds of other tatadocomo subscribers having the same complaint.
2) Customer Support says they cannot unsubscribe it since its not showing in their system.
3) Tatadocomo.com website logged into my account but no button in “My Services” to deactivate any service.
4) called 155223 : IVR states i have no services to unsubscribe,
5) DiveIN doesn’t show any menu with the DanceClib name
6) Visited online chat -> the person asked me to dial 155223 and then disconnected me from chat.

I had to call each time to get the Rs. 10 deduction reversed each week and SMS are not stopping. So I am persuing it legally writing to the nodal office as per TRAI rules.

Please resolve the matter and send me a confirmation.

Well I have been on their good books with my attempt not to file any Insurance Claims and had a 45% NCB ( No Claim Bonus).

Things went all right till I sold my Maruti 800 car to Maruti True Value for a brand new EECO for my daughter.

ICICI Lombard refused to give me the letter for No claim Bonus. 45% equals to 5000 bucks rebate on insurance on my new car !!!

They say first get the RC book stamped with the new owner then they will issue a letter.

Simply I sold my car to Maruti True Value. How the hell am i supposed to know when its sold by them to another buyer?
What if they cannot sell it before the insurance expiry ?

All my NCB is down the drains. I should have claimed for the new windscreen i installed atleast would have recovered 2500 bucks out of the 3800 i paid each year as premium.

Frankly I have been running arround pillars and post at ICICI Lombard GIC offices in Pune and getting a bad treatment.

I wish i would have filed for claim for Insurance i would have recovered my money.

Well I have learnt a lesson now. That NCB value on the insurance paper sounds too good to be true and doesn’t mean you get in good books with ICICI Lombard.  Just file your claims like others and let this company go in RED.

The guarantees in the hosting business

There are mainly two types of guarantees used by the web hosting companies:

1. the money back guarantee and

2. the uptime guarantee

The reason they offer them is simple. It’s a very wise and effective marketing technique. Meaning what? Meaning that the ultimate reason for the existence of these guarantees is that they will bring them more clients and thus more money. Don’t take me wrong, I have nothing against that. It’s just that we have to know the reason to understand the behavior.

Take the money-back guarantee for example. It’s definitely not a promise made by web hosting companies alone. Most services/products come with a guarantee of some kind. Almost every time the guarantee is there to make you say: I’ll buy this! After all, it’s guaranteed to work/make me happy/get the results I expect!

This whole technique is known as “risk reversal”. Way back when no one (or very few companies) guaranteed anything about their products, marketers realized that there was something that stopped clients from buying freely (especially impulse buyers). It was the risk involved in any purchase that was made! When you buy anything you make a deal. With no guarantee, you risk everything in case the service/product doesn’t make you happy. The seller on the other hand, has nothing to lose.

A money back guarantee shifts the whole risk, or a part of it, back to the selling company. The most generous kind of guarantee is the “no questions asked” money back guarantee. Nothing beats that except a “no questions asked” money back guarantee + a free gift. But that’s not something you will see in the web hosting business… Now, if you think about the fact that they would have provided the service for free if they give you a refund, you can consider that you do receive a gift.

I do recommend you to look for money-back guarantees when shopping for hosting. There is a problem associated with them though: the guarantee has a value only if the word of that particular company has a value. If that company treats its customers right, then you have reasons to believe that the money back guarantee is worth believing. To find out if the company treats the customers fairly, you have to look for company reviews.

Now there are money back guarantees and money back guarantees… Some are “no questions asked”, some are “for any reason” and some are “for the following reasons”. The “for the following reasons” guarantees tend to be tricky. Not necessarily because the hosting company wants to trick you, but because the company tries to minimize “unfair” risks. A “no questions asked” guarantee leaves the hosting company exposed to a very real risk of being robbed by unscrupulous individuals who might take advantage of this complete risk reversal.

However, a guarantee that is not “no questions asked” opens you to a whole new set of risks, which depend on the exact conditions of applicability. The negative thing about conditioned guarantees is that they can be easily overstretched by the hosting company to its advantage, meaning that whatever the reason they usually can argue that your reason is invalid.

So I’d prefer to go with either no guarantee, and decide based on customer reviews, and/or to go with a company offering a “no questions asked” guarantee. A conditioned guarantee is too difficult to weigh when you’re buying, especially when you’re not very sure if the company is reliable (based on what former or current customers have said about it).

What I mean is that between a company with no guarantee but a spotless behavior towards its customers, and a company with a conditioned type of money back guarantee, I’d go with the one with the spotless record. Not because the risk would necessarily be lower, but because it would be easier to assess that risk.

It’s a weird choice I guess, but I have another reason for it. Most of the good web hosting companies would issue a refund if real problems would emerge with respect to their service, even if they don’t actually have a money back guarantee.

Money back guarantees differ not only with respect to conditions, but they also differ in length. Basically there are two types of guarantees according to length: 15 days and 30 days. Of course, 30 days is better and considering the fact that most web hosting companies offer a 30 days money back guarantee, I recommend you to try and find a company that offers this. The advantage is clear and very important, especially if your website uses scripts, databases etc. because 30 days give you enough time to set things up and see if everything runs smoothly.

Testing speed

How to test the speed of a host

Testing speed is not complicated, but it’s not very simple either. I will talk about speed in the extended sense of the word. Basically speed is a measure on how fast can the data be transmitted between the visitor and the host’s server.

Ping

You can test a first type of speed by pinging the server. That can be done at the MS-DOS prompt with a simple command: ping serverID, where server ID is either a domain name (e.g. C:\>ping yahoo.com), either an IP (e.g. C:\> ping 128.65.134.89).

The results should be similar to these:

To understand the figures, one must first understand how ping works. It’s actually pretty basic. When you ping a computer you’re sending a message: “Hey! yahoo.com! Are you there?” Then comes the answer: “Yes, I’m here!”. By measuring the time it took yahoo.com to receive your message plus the time it took it’s message to get to you (and by repeating this process a few times) one get a fair idea on how fast these computers can communicate.

It’s all in the time measurement. A ping time of under 200ms is good good, 200 to 400ms is average and 400ms and above are poor ping times. However, poor ping times do not always indicate a problem. If you are pinging servers that are very far away (pinging a server located in USA from a computer located in Australia), poor ping times are normal even for a good connection.

The Loss % represents the percentage of packets (sent messages) that were “lost” (did not return within 1 second). Lost packets are, obviously, not good. However, some hosts disable the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP), so pings are not responded to. The reason they do this is to increase security for the server, although the whole idea of servers being more secure without ICMP has its fans and its fierce opponents as well.

Traceroute

Another way to measure speed is traceroute. Obviously this traces the route between the computer and the server. As the information goes from your computer to the server, it passes through a few routers. A traceroute will tell you how many routers are involved and information about the routers.

The MS-DOS command for traceroute is tracert serverID.

The results should be similar to these:

The numbers on the left are the so-called “hops”. The number of hops that it takes to transmit a packet of data from computer A to computer B is the number of routers. In our example there are 13 hops.

As you can see, each response line gives you the HOP #, the round trip times for the 3 packets that were sent and host information (IP address and/or host name).

The roundtrip times for each hop are representative of the time it takes to go from the source to the host for that particular hop and back to the source.

Short times are a good sign. Also, a small number of hops is usually a good sign.

Traceroute is a good way to determine path but, just as ping, it should not be used as the last word when it comes to speed evaluation.

Download speed test

Arguably the ultimate test in terms of relative accuracy is the download speed test. To do that you should ask the host for a test download file. That’s about the best way to judge speed. The goal is to find a host that has the capability of sending at least a few hundred kBytes/second. If you’re on a dial-up connection you’ll not be able to test this yourself. Read on and you’ll find a solution to this particular problem.

Because the host might try to fool you by giving you a test file located on a fast, almost empty server, it might be even better if you’d contact a current customer and ask him/her to post a test file on his account.

The file should be big enough to allow you to see the speed stability over time. A 10-15 Mb file should be enough. Another important aspect is the time of the test. The best times are rush hours actually, when the servers are busy. These are in the morning when most people read their emails (8am on the east coast of the US) and dinner time. Take care to compensate for time differences as not all servers host American websites or address American audiences.

Always keep in mind that all results depend on location, ISP etc. This is why it’s good to run a tracert from other computers located in other places of the world (where a significant part of your visitors might come from). Good places where you can do that are http://www.tracert.com/cgi-bin/trace.pl and http://www.traceroute.org.

I recommend you to ask the people at WebHostingTalk.com to help you with your speed test. Usually there are people from all over the world there, so you will get to have the host tested from various parts of the world, through different networks, etc. Don’t forget to post the URL of the test file!

Download speed vs. real website performance

The computing power required to push a simple file, even at very high transfer rates, is quite low, because all that needs to be done is to read the file and send it. Things change though when we’re talking about a real website, especially one that makes heavy use of modern tools like databases and scripts. The needed computing power is much higher in this scenario and this can affect the speed at which the data is sent. Thus, it is good to find a real site hosted on that server (or by that host) and do a subjective and an objective speed test on it.

Going back to ping for a bit, just because you notice a ping difference of say 30ms, it doesn’t mean that the diference in page loading time will be of 30ms. Usually a web page has to call for a number of files in order to look as it does. This includes images, css files, javascript files etc., and they’re not all requested at the same time by the browser (as a courtesy to the server, to avoid unnecessary stress). Because these files are not downloaded simultaneously, the 30ms keeps adding to the total page load time with each new batch of requests. In this fashion, it is not unlikely to end up with a second or so of total difference just as a result of this latency.

Latency also has an effect on the maximum download speed possible, sometimes quite a significant one. It is thus not unlikely to have a page loading in 2 seconds when the ping is really low, and to have it load in 4+ seconds when latency is high.

Do all these things I told you about and you’ll get a pretty good idea about the speed of the host/server you’re investigating. Hmm… tough word… “investigating”. It makes all these things sound soo… dangerous!

What’s this bandwidth thing again?

First of all, we have to establish one thing here. I’m not necessarily talking about bandwidth in the sense of speed of transmission or data transmission rate (bits/second), which is the correct definition for the term “bandwidth”. I’m mainly talking about the so called bandwidth which measures the total amount of transmitted data (bits).

This whole misuse of the term bandwidth probably has its causes in the fact that most packages come with a specified amount of Gigabytes/month. Some might have considered it to be the same thing as bandwidth because the it is measured in bits/second. But who really knows?

Still, in order to be clear and rigorous I must make a clear distinction between terms. Bandwidth means data transfer rate, which is a speed – the speed of transferring data. Hence unlimited bandwidth would mean, in other words, an infinite speed when transferring data. This does not exist. Speeds are limited in our world. For example we (or at least most of us) believe that the speed of light is the ultimate speed of anything in this universe. However, the speed of light is limited, not unlimited.

Back to definitions, when most hosting companies refer to bandwidth in their shared/reseller hosting packages they actually mean “data transfer”, not “data transfer rate”. They state for example 5GB of bandwidth, meaning that you’ll be allowed to transfer 5GB of data, usually within a period of time of one month. This is the data transfer that you are allowed to use (or consume), the amount of data that is transmitted, not the speed at which it is or can be transmitted.

With that taken out of our way, I will say that the unlimited bandwidth issue is one of the most sensitive and controversial issues in the web hosting industry. Many web hosting companies actually offer unlimited bandwidth (in the sense of data transfer) in their hosting packages. The thing that really boggles the mind is perhaps that they offer it at a fixed price. Can you put a fixed price on something unlimited? In fact, the very idea of unlimited in a limited world seems… well… rather impossible.

How things work – the hosts’ side of story

Companies defend themselves saying that they don’t do anything to stop a user from doing his best to consume unlimited amounts of data transfer. There is some truth to that, mostly in the case of larger companies. The fact of the matter is that most websites don’t use much, and the host has huge amounts of it “left over”. If one customer uses more than his theoretical fare share, it will not really cost the company a more.

Smaller hosts on the other hand, renting one server at a time, will not be able to apply such a policy in a very liberal way. Overusage can more easily translate into additional fees from their upstream provider, killing their chance to make a decent profit. This is one reason why smaller hosts tend not to offer unlimited bandwidth. It is also a reason why they don’t understand that for some hosts this restriction doesn’t really apply, and explains they will often try to put down all unlimited hosts, arguing that either the servers of unlimited hosts must be overloaded, or that it unlimited is nothing but a lie.

But, is the unlimited offer true? Can you use infinite amounts of bandwidth? To put it shortly, no. Your usage of bandwidth should be seen as unrestricted not infinite, because there still are 2 main indirect limits in place. One, that doesn’t often get mentioned, is the fact that the network, as good as it might be, and the server’s connection, still have limited capacities. The other, and most often to be encountered, has to do with other server resources usage levels such as CPU and memory, but also input/output load (basically the hard drive being able to serve the files as fast as it is requested to).

From any host’s point of view, things are simple. At any given price for a web hosting package, in order to have a desired or necessary profit level, there is a minimum number of accounts that must “reside” per server. This is simple math and business. Anything that endangers the host’s ability to reach the afore mentioned level, has to be addressed (i.e. it must dissapear).

Thus, if a customer’s site becomes a danger to the server’s stability by using too much of anything, that customer has to upgrade or find a way to reduce usage. This often results in the dreaded action called account suspention, because the host cannot afford to have the server’s performance affected while a customer mulls over a decision. It may surprise you, but customers do have a tendency to turn argumentative, and this can drag on for quite a while. The other hundreds of customers who’s sites share that same server will not silently wait for this power play to be over. They will want and ask for action so that their sites are back online or have the performance they’re used to.

Some argue that this whole process is unfair, or that unlimited hosts abuse it, and some probably do. But I don’t think they’re quite that many, because any forced upgrade is a risk to lose a customer. In the cases when there is indeed excessive usage, the customer is using more than he’s paying for, and it is only fair for a business to try and remain profitable.

How did it all came down to this unlimited this and that?

The process may have been more complicated, but I’ll try to express how I have perceived it. At some point, hosts started to offer more and more for the same amount of money. This process was rather gradual for a while. Hosts were generally smaller (and we’ve seen how this affects their perceptions), and the industry was newer. Apparently there had been, back in the 1990s, a trend of offering unlimited hosting plans, that ended up badly (the inexperience of hosts coupled with the wild times perhaps), so, by the early 2000s unlimited hosting packages were seen as a very bad thing. They becasme almost a synonym for bad hosting.

So, hosts stayed away from offering unlimited, but, due to technology improvements (a small part) and cut throat competition, they continued to increase the size of the accounts they offered. After a while though, the numbers they offered had lost any rationality. Everybody in the business knew that the CPU limits would be reached way before the customer would be able to take full advantage of the bandwidth offer. But this was an arms race, and hosts continued to “upgrade and parade” their offers regularly. The ones that didn’t, lost market share. Not immediately, but it happened quite fast. So, all hosts in the budget/mainstream hosting market made sure they didn’t fall too much behind the times.

This, in theory, could have gone on forever, and there were jokes about offering petabytes of bandwidth, but in reality it was bound that someone would one day simply go unlimited, and so they did. Which company it was, I do not know, and it doesn’t matter. It’s not like there was ever a time without any company offering unlimited, it was just that a major host had to do it for it to become mainstream. Once it happened, the game was officially over. One by one, virtually all the players in this market turned unlimited. The bandwidth weapon was rendered useless and the price wars would start in earnest.

True stories

Not all hosts play the game fairly. Small hosts especially can be tempted to compete with their bigger enemies. Of course, they would get beat up really bad in a hand to hand fight, so they must make use of a trick. That trick is played on the customer. The host can know full well that it can’t let anyone use more than say 500GB of data transfer, under any circumstances, but it will go for the “unlimited” marketing nevertheless. It then makes it its policy to force the accounts going over that amount to upgrade.

I remember reading about someone who signed-up for an account with unlimited bandwidth. Imagine his surprise when he received an email one day, asking him to “upgrade” the account because he was (basically) reaching the limit of the “unlimited”. It might make you laugh too, but it’s sad really. This sort of thing is not supposed to happen.

While participating in web hosting forums, I’ve often exchanged ideas with and question owners of hosting companies who were offering unlimited bandwidth. Obviously I was not alone there, other members were asking questions as well. Anyway, in one such occasion, after a few questions we’ve asked, it turned out that even though the host had no limit stated on their site (not even in the fine print), they were in fact using an “in house” monthly data transfer limit of 10GB. All this while bandwidth was advertised as “unlimited”. The owner argued that the customers didn’t complain and that they actually had a few customers who were paying for multiple “unlimited bandwidth” accounts.

The funny things you get to hear in a lifetime!…

Is there anything more to say?

Being “old school” myself, I used to stay away from unlimited bandwidth and look at it with disbelief and fear of poor server performance. I liked to know what I was getting exactly. When it comes to web space, bandwidth, price, and even other hosting features I expected numbers. There is a falacy in that. There is no such thing as “knowing” what the limit is in a shared hosting environment. Just because the host offers a “mere” 50GB, it doesn’t mean you’ll be able to use it all in any circumstances.

For one, you’re given the 50GB on a monthly basis. Try to use 40GB in 2 hours, and get back to me on how it all went. The CPU and memory limits still apply.

So, as I was staying away from buying unlimited bandwidth hosting accounts, the host I was using and about which I couldn’t complain, found itself in the middle of the bandwidth wars, and before long, here I was, upgraded to an unlimited space and bandwidth package. And you know what? Nothing changed! Not on their side, and not on mine. Just because I now had no limit in the bandwidth realm, didn’t mean I had what it takes to increase my usage.

This is an important realization, because this is what makes unlimited hosting offers very much like an all you can eat buffet. The vast majority of websites are not very popular. The limit in usage for most webmasters is very much given by how many pairs of eyes they can get to view their site. The very few who get lucky, can and should find something better than an all you can eat buffet. For the rest of us, it’ll do just fine as long as the food looks good and is tasty, and it can be a great value for the buck too.

Unlimited other things…

This article seems like a good place to bring into discussion the other unlimited features that come with hosting accounts. One such thing is the unlimited space. Just like bandwidth, web space is essentially and undisputedly – limited. Hard disks have limited capacities, and although those hosts who offer unlimited space might argue that hard disks can be added when necessary, fact is that even then, the space would be limited.

Unlimited space usually comes with other limits stipulated in the terms of service, such as a maximum of inodes (files and directories), limits or bans on the use of space to store multimedia files, personal backups etc. So, you should read the terms carefully. For the vast majority of website owners, the limits will be more than acceptable, and you run no risk of having to pay for extra space usage either.

Even back when having bandwidth and space limits were the norm, unlimited anything else was still acceptable and offered even by the hosts who “hated” unlimited bandwidth. This was simply because even for them it made sense not to apply random limits to their packages, just to avoid the remote risk of a customer attempting to start the next Hotmail or Gmail on a shared hosting account.

The official explanation typically given was that unlimited FTP accounts, email accounts, databases and so on are acceptable because their number really wasn’t limited by the host (hence the unlimited claim), but mainly by the amount of space that the customer has bought. Each such account/database requires some space, so when you read “unlimited email accounts”, you still had to translate it into “as many email accounts as you can create within your limited amount of space”, a figure which you couldn’t really quantify with precision. This also wasn’t taking into account the fact that having 1000000 domains on your account would not actually be feasible for the host, affecting reboots, memory usage etc. There was always a double standard: some unlimited things were acceptable, others were not.

Still, it always made sense to let some things unrestricted, from a marketing, and even from a customer’s point of view. Not all the things that can be limited should be limited. And not all limits make sense to be fixed (i.e. not flexible). But just because there’s no stated limit, it doesn’t mean you’re allowed to go infinite. Unlimited in hosting means unrestricted usage — until you break something.
