Virtual Ability CLE coming up1

The SL Bar Association and Virtual Ability are proud to present a seminar for lawyers and others interested in bias in the legal profession. The seminar will take place on March 17, 2010 at 12:00 noon, PDT. Linda Batiste and Beth Loy from the Job Accommodation Network, West Virginia University will be discussing the professional work environment for lawyers with disabilities. They will discuss barriers faced by attorneys with disabilities and what employers need to do in order to accommodate lawyers with disabilities.

On Saturday, Nov. 14, SLBA and the ABA-Young Lawyers Section are sponsoring "Practicing Law in a Virtual World" at the Fredric G. Levin College of Law, University of Florida Campus in the virtual world of Second Life. Attorneys and others are invited to attend. There will be two sessions and an informal mixer.

Session 1: Practice Issues Unique to the Virtual World Setting

Practicing law in an environment where either your client or the person they are dealing with are not in the same jurisdiction raises unique issues. The virtual environment also provides an opportunity for interaction of remotely located legal team members and clients. In addition, Second Life and other virtual worlds have their own local cultures and civil rights issues. This session discusses these and other practice issues unique to representing companies and individuals in a virtual world setting.

Session 2: Substantive Issues in a Virtual World

A. Craig Abrahamson – ‘Lexis Looming’ Contracts and Business Transactions

Steven Wu – ‘Legal Writer’ Intellectual Property Rights

Copyright violation is a common complaint in a virtual world setting, but there are many interesting topics that are unique to practicing in a virtual world. How can I have an enforceable contract in a world with no “law”? If another person’s avatar attacks my avatar in a non-warring world, is it a crime? Find out what issues virtual worlds attorneys and their clients face in this session on substantive issues in a virtual world.

Mixer: Panelists and conference attendees will have a chance to talk with each other informally.

Topics covered were:

1. Careers Fair, Nov. 14, after SLBA meeting. Morgandy Muircastle has done a lot of work organizing it. All the SLBA members to come participate in the discussion. These are not hour long presentations, but rather hour long discussions roughly focused on a couple different aspects of practice.
2. Permanent home. Benjamin Noble's proposal to transition our temporary location here to a permanent location. He would purchase the land, and pass along the cost for us to pay tier, at no markup. Comment in the forums.
3. Speaker series. Contact Cat Galileo with speaker suggestions.
4. Holiday party. Geri Kuhn is head of committee & $30 expense was authorized for costs. Contact her if you want to help with party or venue.
5. Sections of the association. Higgs Wopat is acting as "Section Catalyst" to recruit section leaders. Contact him if you want to run a section.

General Meeting: Election resolution

The outcome of the discussion was the passage of a motion: "It is the membership's position that the board should rehold the election in 2 weeks, unless, in one week, either the scripter tells us who really won the original election, or someone withdraws, permitting us to seat the remaining 3 candidates pursuant to the original election."
