The basis for the campaign is PBS’s 7-part documentary “Unnatural Causes – Is Inequity Making Us Sick?” which highlights how social, economic, and demographic status can and does affect an individual’s health and access to quality healthcare. This documentary can be viewed in its entirety on HFHS University. In addition, there are several other HFHS University courses and CME events on the subject of Cultural Competence.

The Sladen Library has just created a Health Care Equity Toolkit which gathers together dozens of resources on the subject of health care equity to support the corporate initiative. The toolkit is located at http://www.henryfordconnect.com/sladen.cfm?id=1153, and is the perfect one-stop web page for everything you need to know about health care equity.

In addition to links for the HFHS University and CME courses mentioned above, the toolkit also contains internet resources on the social determinants of health, healthcare disparities, and cultural competency. The Sladen Library’s books and journals on the subject are also included. Look for relevant journal articles to be added in the near future. – Valerie Reid, MLIS

Everyone is Using the Library. Halloween Party in the Henry Ford Hospital Department of Pediatrics, c.1930s.

The care of children at Henry Ford Hospital began early in 1918 under Dr. John Chalmers Montgomery. The Department of Pediatrics was later established by Dr. Irvine McQuarrie in 1927. During the depression years, Henry Ford Hospital collaborated with many Michigan social service agencies to aid families and their children in need. The hospital hosted $1.00 pediatric examinations, an adjunct school, physical therapy and many special events, such as the annual Halloween celebration for the Pediatric patients and staff members.

The colorful event was held either in the hospital rooftop solarium or in the open porches of the Pediatric department. The nurses transformed the wards into a Halloween gala with decorations of cornstalks, decorated pumpkins and autumnal floral arrangements of mums and marigolds. The children were dressed in costumes, often created out of hospital linens and treated to a feast of candied apples and sweets specially created by the hospital bakery. The highlight of the party was the magic show by the staff magician, Arthur Whelpy, who also worked as the Chief Dental Technician in the 1930's. – Melanie Bazil, Senior Archivist

Need Medical Calculators?
The Henry Ford Hospital baseball team was founded in the 1920's to provide physical exercise for the staff physicians. Some of the early players included Drs. Frank J. Sladen, John K. Ormond, Frank Menaugh, F. Janney Smith, Wendell T. Garretson, William C. Montgomery, John Mateer and Robert Durham. The games were held at Belle Isle Park in Detroit and were a highlight for both the staff and their families.

Another early activity promoting exercise was in association with Henry Ford's 'Huron Mountain Club' near Marquette, Michigan. The resort was staffed by the hospital physicians, c.1928-1950, as a means of introducing the elite clientele to the work of Henry Ford Hospital. The staff reported back to Dr. Frank J. Sladen on their medical work, which included care for gastrointestinal disorders, fevers, cardiology problems and fractures. Henry and Clara Ford would personally request key physicians to treat their friends and family. In return the physicians and their families were provided a rigorous vacation of hiking, fishing and camping in the Michigan outdoors.

Current Customers—1161
Total Requests Processed—13,500

Statistics from 2008 to 2009

Lending to Libraries—3007 to 4649 (increase of 54%)

Borrowing from Libraries—4064 to 4471 (increase of 10%)

Document Delivery (articles from our library)—1108 to 1104 (decrease of .3%)

Our customers love this new system. Some of the advantages are that the turnaround time from ordering to receipt is faster and customers are able to manage their own requests. Each customer’s account keeps a history and shows the status of their orders. The ordering from our PubMed and Ovid databases is automated and easy to use.

The ILLiad system has proven to be cost-efficient and a time-saver for the library and its customers. – Barbara LeTarte, MLIS

Students were charged with writing research papers on a particular disease or health condition that included both consumer and professional level information.

First, librarians went to St. Isaac Jogues to instruct students on: 1) how to critically evaluate health information online, 2) navigating a popular consumer health resource called MedlinePlus.gov, and 3) utilization of PubMed MEDLINE. Students were exposed to various types of literature in order to be able to discriminate between consumer and professional literature, and how each can be of use when pursuing the research process.

A few weeks later, it was time for the students of St. Isaac Jogues to get the opportunity to visit a medical library and explore the research process even further! Each of the eighth grade classes visited Sladen where they broke into groups and worked with a designated librarian to explore our book collection, MedlinePlus.gov, and PubMed. This learning opportunity provided students a unique way to learn about the research process, explore different types of literature, and be able to differentiate between reliable and unreliable sources of information. Providing this type of educational outreach is just one way in which Sladen Library is supporting the ‘Service’ Pillar of Excellence. – Nandita Mani, MLIS
After World War I, there was a nursing shortage, which prompted the Ford family and Dr. Frank Sladen to develop the program. The school, founded by Clara Ford, became an important component to the medical education at the hospital. The goal was to provide service to the community in the preservation and improvement of public health. Women came from the United States, Canada and Europe to attend the prestigious school, which had rotations in medicine, surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, neurology, psychology and the dispensary.

Clara Ford also felt that the school should have a luxurious environment and offer cultural activities in theatre, modern dance and music. In addition to the regulation starched white uniforms and spotless shoes, the students were expected to abide by the no smoking rule or face the administrative consequences. The hospital grounds became their home for three years and many felt comfortable to express their individuality. Elegant teas with the Ford family were a highlight, Jesse Bonstelle assisted theatrical classes and Mrs. Lovett instructed the women in ballroom dancing.
The school atmosphere changed in the early 1970's and many students were commuting to the campus, often with jobs and family obligations. The curriculum was changed to a two year program and affiliation with the University of Dearborn was established. In 1996, the school was closed and the last class graduated after seventy-one years of service. – Melanie Bazil, Senior Archivist
Many library users may already be frequent users and fans of the current Micromedex interface, now referred to as Micromedex 1.0. Recently, a newly designed interface called Micromedex 2.0 was made available to users. Both interfaces are currently available simultaneously. You can try out Micromedex 2.0 by clicking on the “Use Micromedex 2.0 now!” link located at the top of the screen in Micromedex 1.0. By the end of June 2010, Micromedex 2.0 will contain 100% of the content currently available in 1.0, but until then, 2.0 will not have toxicology information or content from Martindale.

The Micromedex 2.0 interface has been modeled after popular search engines providing a single search box on each page, relevancy ranked results, and clean, easy navigation. The search box supports single and multiple term searches, as well as natural language queries. For example, you can type in a simple question as you would normally ask it such as, “What are the non FDA approved uses for Botox?” Spelling help has also been incorporated into the new interface. If you are unsure how to spell a drug or disease, slowly begin typing the term and a suggestion list will appear below the search box.

Pictured: The 360° View Dashboard for Plavix as featured in Micromedex 2.0

A new feature of Micromedex 2.0 is the 360° View Dashboard which collects all of the results for a search in one easy to browse and navigate page. The 360° View Dashboard provides quick links to drug summary information through DrugPoint, as well as access to evidence-based, detailed evaluations from DrugDex. When applicable, the 360° View Dashboard provides an image of the drug along with links to related Drug Consults. Drug Consults are articles or reports written for Micromedex that provide information apart from the drug monographs. They are evidence-based and may address topics such as the recommended drug treatment guidelines for a specific condition, or even provide information such as a listing of alcohol free OTC medications. To view an alphabetical list of all the Drug Consults currently available, simply search “drug consults”.

Micromedex 2.0 has many helpful tools to assist in patient care. There is a Drug Identification component where you can search for the name of a drug by its imprint or physical description. The Drug Comparison module allows you to compare two drug monographs side by side. A number of Clinical Calculators that include dosing tools and laboratory values are also available. Speaking of laboratory values, Micromedex 2.0 includes evidence-based laboratory test information via Lab Advisor. Lab Advisor provides data such as a definition of the lab test, indications, collection/storage methods, and LOINC codes. It comes in handy when you need to brush up on the specifics of an unfamiliar or rarely used lab test. To access Lab Advisor, simply type the name of the test into the search box. Blackberry users on campus will also be pleased to learn that Micromedex provides mobile access. For instructions on how to connect from your mobile device please visit this link, or click on “Mobile” located at the top of each page in Micromedex.

Whether you are a longtime user of the Micromedex 1.0 interface or new to the database, now is the perfect time to give the new features of Micromedex 2.0 a try. If you love the new interface, let the library know and we can request to have it set as our default interface. If you have questions about Micromedex, or any of our pharmacology resources, please contact the library at 313-916-2550 or sladen@hfhs.org. – JoAnn Krzeminski, MLIS

Check Out Our New Nursing Books

These are some of the nursing titles recently added to our circulating collection. In addition to online databases, books, and journals, the librarians at the Sladen have created customized web pages referred to as toolkits. The toolkits focus on a professional group or topic. The Nursing Toolkit can be accessed by clicking on the Curricula, Toolkits, and More link located under the heading Specialty Pages on the left hand side of the Sladen Library homepage http://www.henryfordconnect.com/sladen. Or you can use the following URL: http://www.henryfordconnect.com/sladen.cfm?id=297. What you will find is a variety of online resources focusing on nursing. Some of the topics include Sladen Resources, HFHS resources, and web resources such as Nurse.com which is the online site for Nursing Spectrum / NurseWeek. There are also sections on Associations & Organizations and Career Information.

The Toolkits are a work in progress so if there is a site that you believe should be a part of the Nursing Toolkit, please do not hesitate to contact a librarian with your suggestion. You can contact the library by calling 313-916-2550, by email sladen@hfhs.org, or by using the Feedback form. The Feedback form can be accessed by clicking on Forms & Feedback on the left hand side of the Sladen homepage under the Services heading. –Gina Hug, MLIS

Announcements

Ovid to Update User Interface

Ovid plans on updating its interface on June 30, 2010. Included will be a new feature called My Workspace which requires a Personal Account. My Workspace is a dedicated area where users will be able to assemble and organize their research findings into projects and folders. Now is a great time to create a Personal Account and to test the new interface. To access the new interface open Ovid and then click on the “Try it now!” button at the top of the page.
AHRQ Releases a New Health Literacy Toolkit

The Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ) has issued a new web-based “Health Literacy Universal Precautions” toolkit. Because you can’t tell a patient’s health literacy level just by looking at them, this toolkit introduces universal precautions that can be followed to ensure clear understanding and communication. Access the toolkit here: http://www.ahrq.gov/qual/literacy/.

Celebrate National Library Week With Us April 12-16!

Since 1958, National Library Week has been celebrated each April in libraries across the country. Henry Ford Hospital sponsored several Easter related activities in the 1950's. The Easter Parade featured colorful hand made Easter bonnets created by the occupational therapy patients on M-2. The April 1957 Thermonitor stated that the “highest fashioned hats” were made using scrap materials and that three prizes were awarded for the most original hats. The occupational therapy department had many holiday parties as part of their therapy program to aid in the socialization of the patient.

Other popular Easter programs included the Easter Bunny Campaign, to raise funds for the purchase of presents for the pediatric patients on 1-3 and 1-4. The February 1954 Thermonitor issue featured an article on “How to Be an Easter Bunny”, providing instructions on the program. The fundraiser was sponsored by the hospital messenger service, which raised money by abstaining from their candy bar purchases. The pediatric department also allowed rabbits in the wards for the children to play with during the holiday season.
Clinical Pharmacology offers many tools that make it a valuable resource not only for pharmacists, but physicians and nurses as well.

At the core of Clinical Pharmacology are the drug monographs that provide clear, succinct, peer-reviewed information on all US prescription drugs, as well as coverage of herbal, nutritional, investigational, and over-the-counter products. Each monograph offers easy-to-navigate tabs for description/classification, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, indications/dosage, administration, contraindications, pregnancy, interactions, adverse reactions, IV compatibility, how supplied, monitoring parameters, and a link to the natural product/drug interaction report from the Natural Medicine’s Database.

The interactive tools that are part of Clinical Pharmacology should not be overlooked. These tools can be accessed from the drop-down menus that are located at the top of each page. From the Reports tab you can customize a drug interaction report, a clinical comparison report, or look at the IV compatibility of two drugs. The IV compatibility report is drawn from Trissel’s 2™ Clinical Pharmaceutics Database.

What if you don’t know the name of the drug you are looking for, but you need to find out which drugs have the adverse reaction of dizziness? You can run a search based on adverse reaction from the Find/List tab. Additional options found under this tab include searching by indication, contraindication, NDC, or manufacturer. You can also view an A-Z list of all the monographs available in Clinical Pharmacology, generate a listing of all the drugs that interact with grapefruit juice, view a list of all the monographs that contain a black box warning, and view a listing of products that require a MedGuide. In the instances that the MedGuides are copyright free, the full document is provided and can be printed off and distributed to patients.

Speaking of patients, Clinical Pharmacology also provides access to printable patient-level drug information MedCounselor Sheets. These can be accessed from the Patient Education tab. The MedCounselor Sheets comply with national standards for Consumer Medication Information and are available in both English and Spanish. When you print a MedCounselor Sheet you are also given the option to customize it per patient by including the patient’s name, institution, and the name of healthcare provider. There is even the capability to increase the font size of the printout for low vision patients. Because the Sladen Library subscribes to MDConsult, you can also access the Patient Education portion of MDConsult from the Patient Education tab in Clinical Pharmacology.

The Resource Center tab contains numerous point-of-care reference materials and tools. The Lab Reference Values area provides traditional units for many standard lab tests including those found in a Coagulation Panel, an Arterial Blood Gas Panel, a Metabolic Panel, and a Urinary Renal Panel. The Clinical Calculators section of the Resource Center provides access to dozens of drug calculators, unit conversion calculators, clinical criteria/decision tree calculators, and medical calculators which are powered by MedCalc 3000. Some of the available medical calculators can aid in determining values such as creatine clearance and total lung capacity.

As you can see, Clinical Pharmacology is a wonderful reference tool for the pharmacist, lab technician, physician, and nurse. There is much more to this database than what is listed here.

Support for Authors

To support authors, both writing resources and tools that support collaboration have been organized to help facilitate the scholarly communication process. Did you know that the library offers manuscript preparation services at no charge to HFHS employees? In 2009, we received 82 requests for assistance with manuscripts! If you are struggling with formatting your paper to meet guidelines set by a specific journal call and ask us about manuscript preparation and find out how it can be a real timesaver!

Tutorials

Have you ever felt unfamiliar with using a particular resource such as PubMed, OVID Medline, CINAHL, or EndNote? The ‘Tutorials’ section of the website will provide you access to information on utilization of select resources. All tutorials can be downloaded, printed, and can be accessed regardless of whether you are on or off the HFHS campus. Tutorials are in PowerPoint, PDF, and Word document formats. Online tutorials for EndNoteX3 and the new PubMed interface are coming soon.

Training

In 2009, the library conducted 61 training sessions, serving 605 participants. Training requests received have been broken down as exhibited in Figure 1 below.

When asking participants for their feedback regarding their training experiences, 96.3% indicated they would recommend using Sladen’s Education & Training services. The library can provide instruction on a variety of resources including (but not limited to) EndNote, PubMed, OVID Medline, CINAHL, Evidence-based medicine resources, Evaluating Health Information, and much more. Instruction can be provided in a variety of formats:

One-on-one

Hands-on group instruction

Demonstration

The library is also able to bring instruction directly to you when and where you need it via Library-On-The-Go, a mobile computer lab comprised of 10 laptops, an instructor’s Tablet PC, and a projector. If you feel that you or your department is in need of training from the library, give us a call and we will work together to come up with an efficient and effective training opportunity. Want to see what has been said about our Education & Training services? Feel free to browse through the comments from past participants.
