Seya Kitenge Fundafunda talks about her evolution into cinema, her film Kayemba, initiatives such as the media company African Reel and the Amka Arts Festival, and her hopes for the future of Zambian Cinema.

Seya, you are an emerging filmmaker from Zambia, what were your experiences in cinema while growing up?

Well I come from a family that watched a lot of classic movies like My Fair Lady, A Sound of Music (my favorite film of all time), Fiddler on the Roof, Scrooge, and lots of classic Disney movies like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Bambi, etc. But these were viewed at home, and not at an actual cinema because at the time the state of cinema theatres in this country had deteriorated and we weren’t allowed to go anywhere near them. Despite all this, my interest in performing arts emerged.

You have had diverse international experiences in media production, starting in high school in fact at the International School of Geneva, what role have they played in the evolution of your career at present?

My international background has played a huge role in my life and my career; it has exposed me to so many cultures. At this moment in history, I think it’s critical to learn and understand how to live and work with people of different cultures. And it’s the same in the media industry. Looking at the high school productions, such as the German play The Visit, we had students from different ethnic backgrounds taking up German roles. For my role, I played a painter and recited some of my lines in German, which was tough during rehearsals but when it was show time, I have to say we all did a remarkable job. My work ethic today is what it is because of my past experiences; it has made me a perfectionist.

You attended a film internship program in Helsinki, Finland in 2010. What did the internship entail, how did you become involved with it and what were your experiences?

The film internship in Helsinki, Finland came about after the 2008 production of the feature film Suwi by Musola Cathrine Kaseketi. It was the first co-production between Zambia and Finland. We had half of the crew come from Finland. And upon completion of the production, the Finnish crew wanted to do more for the young Zambian crew in terms of training since Zambia has no film school. When they returned to Helsinki, they presented a proposal to the Finnish Government to do a 3-month film internship in Helsinki. Due to budget constraints, they couldn’t take the whole Zambian crew, so only three could go in 2009, which was the first year. There was an application process and selection, so I applied for the 2010 group and got selected. I had an amazing experience during the internship and learnt a lot, including: the history of film and filmmaking, exercises in making short amateur silent films, attending the 2010 Helsinki International Film Festival, scripting and directing a short film called Kayemba.

Your final project, Kayemba, is about the traumatic experience of a young Finnish-African woman by the same name. Why did you choose this subject, what were your experiences with the actors and crew, and what has been the reception of the film?

The idea for Kayemba came about while still in Zambia, before I leaving for the internship. As part of the application for the internship, one had to send a synopsis of a film one would like to make at the end of the internship and so that is how Kayemba came about. I am a human rights advocate at heart and I wanted to do something that had to do with women’s rights. The subject matter for Kayemba is so important and relevant and needs to be talked about and addressed with urgency throughout Africa and the world at large. There are a lot of women, young women in fact, whose rights are infringed upon, due solely to the fact that they are women. And if this film helps even one woman, then I will be satisfied. The cast and crew of Kayemba were a great group to work with. Everyone was very dedicated to this project before, during and after the shoot. I am so grateful to them. They made my directorial debut stress free. Kayemba is screening at the 2011 Kenya International Film Festival (21-31 October), which is really exciting. This is the first major film fest at which it is being screened. Some viewers expressed feeling depressed, maybe because of its inconclusive ending. There is no happy ending. I wanted it to be as realistic as possible. Some did not like it. For instance one YouTube viewer commented “I don't believe that showing violence prevents violence. That is why I don't like this film. It is not a good idea to show a rape.” But overall, the responses have been encouraging.

Kayemba (2010) by Seya Kitenge Fundafunda

You are the director of the media company African Reel. What is the mission of the company and some of the projects that it has undertaken?

African Reel is an up and coming media house. The mission is to tell realistic African stories, to inspire, educate, motivate, challenge, as well as entertain the world in general and Africa in particular. To make a difference! We are currently working on a few campaigns, one of them called Green Revolution focuses on the environment. Another, Real and Raw, a reality show of sorts, presents African perspectives on African female beauty. In addition, we are in the developmental stage for a series of 13 short films dealing with the theme of HIV/AIDS, but with a twist: all of the stories derive from real life. We are also in co-production with another local production company on a 20-episode drama series called Dreams. So these are just a few of the projects African Reel has embarked upon.

The project, Dreams is a 20-episode TV drama series. What is the theme of the program and how did the concept evolve?

Dreams is a drama series reflecting on gender challenges in relation with development. It addresses issues that women in Africa deal with and the challenges they face; things such as women’s health, girl child education and cultural challenges for women. The story is told through three characters: Taonga an orphan with a strong desire for education and freedom but cocooned in a society that has different trends and norms of life. Bertha, Taonga’s mother who is trapped in a marriage based on cultural beliefs, and Kamukazi Taonga’s cousin, a young mother entering marriage for all the wrong reasons. They all have dreams that seem farfetched for the simple reason that they are women. There are certain things that society believes are a woman’s fate and that she is supposed to do. The three women endure hardships such as rape, defilement, infringement of rights, and other abuses.

What reactions do you hope to get from the viewers?

Women are the major players in the development process and need to be empowered. Media is a powerful tool to educate women on issues that affect them, because what people see they believe and begin to practice.

The AMCA Arts Festival is a project in the works. What is the concept and what do you hope that participants will get from the festival.

Amka Arts Festival is a multi disciplinary arts festival whose main goal is to promote Zambian art and showcase our diverse culture. It will also be a platform for international artists to network and learn from Zambian artists and vice versa. We are hoping that at the end of the festival, our government will see the importance of supporting the arts industry, because there has been little support from this important sector. The festival will take place from the 3rd to 4th week of September 2012.

What is the state of cinema in Zambia and what contribution would you like to make?

Zambian cinema is still in its infancy. We haven’t really reached the competitive stage yet. Right now we are lobbying for a film policy as well as a film school because we currently do not have one. Most of us fortunate ones got hands-on training during international projects shot in Zambia, but those who weren’t able to be a part of those projects are left out. Having said that, there are some young people nonetheless, who go ahead and write scripts, shoot a few amateur films. However, we have a long way to go as far as cinema is concerned. I hope to be part of the evolution of our industry, not just as a woman, but also as a proud African.

SDR TV - Who is Mazuba Kapambwe?

Afrosocialite - Mazuba Kapambwe is a 22 year old (will be 23 on March 8) Zambian and self described 'Afropolitan'. I was born in Silver Spring ,Maryland (USA) and have lived in Germany, Ethiopia and home (Zambia) and I am now based in New York. I'm a college student in my final 4 months of university majoring in Africana studies with a business minor. I'm also a radio co host /Afro Entertainment Guru at Radio Afro Australia, Social Media and PR intern at Heritage 1960 (www.heritage1960.com), blogger at afrosocialiting.wordpress.com and I occasionally contribute to Africa Style Daily and other African focused magazines and websites.

SDR TV - How did the Moniker "Afrosocialite" come into being?

Afrosocialite - Afrosocialite is a combination of the word 'Afropolitan' which was coined by Taiye Wosurnu,( A Nigerian writer) and the word 'socialite'. It's basically a lifestyle of someone whose proudly African, seeks out and attends African inspired events and promotes a positive image of the continent through different ways ie wearing clothes by African designers.

SDR TV - You have an keen interest in Fashion and Africa as a whole, how did this interest come about?

Afrosocialite - I've always had an interest in not just my country but Africa as a whole because I went to an international high school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia were my friends were from so many different African countries. When I moved to New York, I wanted to bond with more africans and felt that seeking out african inspired events was the way to do that. African fashion came from reading various sites like Bella Naija.com an my first internship for Pop Africana magazine in 2008. Now i intern for a site that retails fashion brands from designers inspired by the continent, so I get to combine both my love of Africa and fashion.

SDR TV - Who and What inspires you?

Afrosocialite - My inspiration comes from various sources, but mostly my friends and mentors who are afrocreatives themselves . My mentor Enyinne Owunwanne is amazing and I count on her for support, advice, long talks on african fashion etc. My 'adopted brothers' Nana, Kwaku (who are designers) ,Ger Duany (humanitarian, actor,model), Iyadede (singer), Sophy Aiida and so many more who are paving the way for me.

SDR TV - How do you remain driven?

Afrosocialite - I stay driven through the support of friends and even people I don't know personally that read my blog or my articles or who have watched my past video interviews with celebrities like Van Vicker, Nonhle Thema and more. I get facebook messages of people saying they are really proud of me and that I inspire them, so that keeps me focused.

SDR TV - How did you get the gig with Radio Afro Australia and how do you find working with the team?

Afrosocialite - My gig with Radio Afro is a perfect example of using facebook for business. I don't remember how I became friends with Israel Hobson (or Dj Iz) on facebook, but I had contacted him about sponsoring a fashion show I was an organizer of for the African Students Association at my university, and from there, I guess he followed the work i've done and reached out to me in June 2011 to be a co-host. I've been on almost every show since then and shared 'Haute African Events' with our listeners from around the world. (think everywhere from Antigua to Zanzibar and in between). I love Team Radio Afro. We mesh so well even though because I'm the only member based in the States, I have yet to meet them in person. But we support each other even outside of Radio Afro and that's what a team should do.

SDR TV - You have alot roles working and writing for magazines as well...would you like to highlight some of those.

Afrosocialite - I've written for many sites such as Mimi Magazine, Afripop mag, Giant magazine (online), Face to Face Africa, Africa Style Daily, guest written for Style House Files, Shadders.net and print magazines like Applause Africa, Arik airlines in flight magazine (Arik Wings), Routes Magazine and I have upcoming articles in New African Woman magazine.

SDR TV - How often do you visit home (Zambia) and what do you miss most about it?

Afrosocialite - I last visited home in 2010 summer for three weeks and actually wrote about my experience for Africa Style Daily which can be viewed here. Before that, I last visited in 2005. I'm a foodie, so i always miss things like fritters, local buns, ice blocks, sugar cane and I can go on and on. And now that Zambia won the Nations Cup, I wish I was home to be at those parties!

SDR TV - What are the five things you cannot live without?

Afrosocialite - 1. My blackberry. I have internet on it so it keeps me updated on facebook and twitter. I'm also a serial texter so its much needed. 2. My laptop. I'm in the social media and PR world, so staying online is very important. I manage the social media accounts for my internship at Heritage 1960, so i need my laptop or Ipad to live tweet at fashion week or other events. 3. My Victoria Secret Lipgloss: Having chapped lips is not sexy at all! And I hardly wear make-up, so this is as close as it gets! 4. Coffee : Preferably Starbucks. Again, working in PR means long hours, and I balance that with school so to stay awake at odd hours, I have to have my iced vanilla late. 5. Something to read: My favorite thing to do is read. I was brought up on stories and my dad always bought me novels when I got good grades, so that has stayed with me. I keep the latest novel I'm reading in my bag (right now its 'Open City' by Teju Cole) and some african magazines for inspiration and to stay current. (right now its the latest issue of Arise)

SDR TV - Anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Afrosocialite - Just some words of encouragement. I think a lot of potential afrocreatives don't pursue what they want to do because society teaches us that the only career options are lawyer, doctor and banker, but I am a firm believer in the quote that says "Do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life".

The Holstar and Teck-Zilla talk "The Extraordinaires" on World Hip Hop Market

By Naboth “RIZLA” Rimayi (for World Hip Hop Market) Zambia’s hip-hop scene is moving in ever-widening circles these days, and there’s no telling where it might take the main purveyors of the scene – with super crews like the LXG (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen –w/ MC’s Camstar, Exile, Maverick, Caesar Cognac) and the Zone Family (w/ MC’s Dope G, Jay Rox, Yung Verbal and Thugga) coming up big in 2011.
Enter into the 2012 fray a new album by tag-team duo The Holstar (Zambia), a producer and MC for Slam Dunk Records and Canadian based Nigerian producer Teck-Zilla (Str8buttah Productions).
Their album, appropriately titled The Extraordinaires, is a 10-track gem for the global underground hip-hop massive that is a combination of soulful, grimy beats and socially conscious lyrical insights that present a clear alternative to the here-today forgotten-tomorrow formulaic pop fare on heavy rotation in both clubs and radio these days.
As The Holstar told one Zambian paper, “The Extraordinaires is a prime example of hip-hop in its purest form, thought provoking and head bobbing that everyone is going to love.”
Indeed, the duo has been cooking up the content of the album since first linking up in 2010 on Africanhiphop.com (see interview).
Stand out tracks on The Extraordinaires include Blackman Struggling (feat. UK-based Mister Rae of Str8Buttah records), Past Present and future and Skills which features MC Zubz from SA.

WORLD HIP HOP MARKET (WHHM): For anyone who doesn’t know who you are please introduce yourself and what you do?
Holstar:I go by the name The Holstar – Emcee and hip-hop enthusiast hailing from Lusaka, Zambia.
Teck-Zilla: I’m Teck-Zilla, hip-hop fan, producer, emcee, and I’m straight outta Nigeria.
WHHM: How would you best define your sound and style of rap?
Holstar: I draw a lot of my influence from the 1990s, and from an early age I was into Snoop Dogg, Biggie, Tupac, Wu Tang, Nas…and I would say I like to present a more conscious message in my songs.
Teck-Zilla: Probably draw from the same artists mentioned above, Snoop ‘cos he was easily accessible to the masses but with time I grew to focus on certain gifted emcees like Nas, Black Thought, Organized Konfusion and MC’s in that vein.
WHHM: Tell us about the current state of hip hop in Zambia and Nigeria and what you are contributing to it?
Holstar: Hip-hop has fast become the biggest genre in Zambia! A few years back hip-hop was considered more ‘underground’ but now it’s emerged and the fan base is humongous. I have been part of the hip-hop movement for a couple of years and right now I am managing one of the groups at the forefront of Zambian hip-hop – Zone Fam.
Teck-Zilla: Cosign! Hip-hop is the in-thing now in Nigeria. But a clear distinction should be made between rap and hip-hop, and I feel I make that distinction crystal clear with my own material. Hip-hop is the embodiment, the totality of the elements of the culture (emceeing, deejaying, b-boying, graffiti). I believe what The Holstar and I did was and is hip-hop, and part of that culture. It’s not just rap alone.
WHHM: Please take us through your current release The Extraordinaires how did this come about?
Holstar: Myself and Teck-Zilla first met up on Africanhiphop.com around 2010 when we did the Zone Fam’s first album the The Full Script so it was inevitable that we evolved into making The Extraordinaires together. As for the process – we go back and forth with ideas thanks to the world wide web!
Teck-Zilla: Our first collabo was in 2008 or 2009. I think (lol), when we did the To Be An African joint. It’s been that long wow! The process was quite easy though. Holstar had a plan and ran it by me and we both ran with it. Simple and plain.
(Editor’s note: According to industry heads the Zone Fam’s 1st album The Full Script was one of 2010’s most downloaded Mixtapes on the African Continent.)
WHHM: Which artists and producers did you feature in the project and what does this last offering mean to you?
Holstar: The entire project was produced by Teck-Zilla and we featured Mister Rae of Str8 Buttah, Dominant 1, Zubz (South Africa) and Al Kan-I. As a result of the collaboration we’ll be collaborating on more tracks and projects this year, seeing as this will open more doors; people should look out for what we come up with!
Teck-Zilla: Yeah, the doors are wide open. Would really like to see a United States of Africa type album in the future. Hmm, food for thought guys!
WHHM: What are you currently working on and where can we get more info about your projects?

SDR TV - Who is Scarlet?

Scarlet - Scarlet is a Zambian singer, and songwriter.... I am 24 years old, born in Lusaka, from a family of eight, (seven girls, one boy) and I think half my family is musically inclined....my uncle Lukundo Siwale, co owns So' Good Entertainment with a close family friend, Chifumbe Sikazweh and he is basically the one person that pushed me to try singing...initially for Chali Mulalami's Ultimate Slinger show on ZNBC but in the end as his first female artist at the label...thats what got me here....was way too shy before that push...

SDR TV - Who inspired you to pursue a career in music and who is your primary audience?

Scarlet - When it comes to inspiration...I really envied the creative process at So' Good when it was just starting out...and I think that was my biggest inspiration at the time, watching Grant Mutema and KRYTIC work....musically though, I'm a huge Beyonce fan and I love old music...Aretha, Patti La Belle....those were real ladies....when it comes to my sound though I am very soulful...India Arie, Musiq Soulchild. Maxwell, Adele, Chrisette Michele, Anthony Hamilton, Earth Wind and Fire, James Morisson....that kinda music...my primary audience is made up of people who like to listen to mellow, soothing, real talk poetry to music...

SDR TV - How would you describe your genre/sound and what does the future of that particular sound look like in Zambia?

Scarlet - I am mainly into soul, afro jazz and soft reggae...the future of that kind of music in Zambia...is still very promising...if we can just learn to work together to do good work...and work hard and be dedicated to good music....

SDR TV - Are you currently working on an album? (Mention who you are working with, producers, artists, release date etc)

Scarlet - Yes I am currently working on an album...its in the final stages of production and is set for release this year...my head of production is James Sakala from So' Good Ent and we are working with Taonga Sakala from Goemmi...we have also done one track with Jonah BAnda who used to run Uneeq Records, as well as something in the pipeline with K-Amy's Yahya Kaba, (KB from Qfm)....I'm really excited about that...on the album itself...I have collaborated with Cactus Agony, Ty2, Exile, and J-Bus an upcoming reggae soul genius....so far it sounds good!

SDR TV - How has been your journey in the Zambian Music Industry so far and what would you like to see change?

Scarlet - My journey has been good....I really can't complain too much...I have so much support from my camp and from all the radio people, I wouldn't have gotten this far without them...and other industry people that really make it easy for me to work with them and to progress....there is so much talent in Zambia, we need to be given more opportunities to utilise our talent and develop our ideas and use our platform to make our nation and continent proud....I have a great team that ensures that I keep my head out of the clouds and focus on what's important....my stylist Mwamba Nakazweh of Lily's Pepelia who makes sure I don't embarrass myself,(",) and my management, headed by Jamiel Banda that ensure that I don't get lost or exploited or lazy or big headed...my family is also very supportive so between their help and our prayers, so far its been good....

SDR TV - You are headlining a show on 14th February 2012 at La Gondola...what can the fans expect?

Scarlet - Yeah, we have planned a really good show with a couple of surprises thrown in...I just really want to be able to show everybody a good time...to interact with all of you and let you see me up there, putting smiles on your faces with some old songs and some new ones...its a live band show, so I will be backed by a full band that is called The Color of Symphony and I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised with what we have to offer them....I want to give them an unforgettable evening of fun and music and good food....tickets are going at K180,000 inclusive of dinner and are available at the venue or by calling 0966662535...

SDR TV - Where do we see you a year from now and which other artists/producers do you hope to work with?

Scarlet - A year from now I hope to have released a memorable album and be working on my next one...I hope I will be able to work with everyone really...for this year I had said I was bleeding to work with Aunty Maureen Lilanda and God heard my prayer, she is working with me and will be coaching me and the band...and also appearing on the album...I forgot to mention that! I'm also hoping she will let me write for her....so next year, I mean, I got the one thing I really wanted, I'm just gonna be grateful...but I hope I will have made a mark on the live music circuit and will be able to see more doors open for me and my whole crew...

SDR TV - Any words for aspiring singers/songwriters that want to get into the industry?

Scarlet - Its not an easy business, it takes hard work and patience and humility and I am still learning that...surround yourself with good people, put your head down and work work work...that's what I'm doing and it seems to be paying off...but you really have to get into it for the right reasons if you do it for money you won't last long....

SDR TV - Tell us about yourself.

ACE DIMES - Am a Hip Hop artist/ beat maker. Am a great person to be around because I believe in constant evolution when it comes to music; so its not all about me but about how people relate to my music.

SDR TV - What are you working on and what can we expect in the near future?

ACE DIMES - Well am working on my album at the moment and the future is more than bright for me. Expect a new transition in the hip hop game because my style is not landed locked so am looking forward to blending in with different cultures musically.

SDR TV - Who is on production and tell us about the creative process?

ACE DIMES - I have a great arsenal on the production side of things which includes Me, The Pope, Dee Funk and a few international producers. I never limit my self so creativity is vast.

SDR TV - Where do we see you five years from today?

ACE DIMES - In Five years time I picture me being one of the best hip hop artists in Africa; gata push it to the limit so cloud nine is where I'll be basking.

Big Brother Africa 2012: The Ark Edition

Just when DStv audiences thought that they had seen all the incredible twists and turns that mega-hit reality-TV franchise Big Brother Africa could possibly include, M-Net’s sensational series has pulled off another huge surprise.

And you know it’s a massive announcement when even the fact that this season’s brand new cash prize of a cool USD 300 000 isn’t the headline-grabbing news!

Grabbing that honor is the revelation from series producers that this season, entrants must DOUBLE-UP to compete. This means that anyone who wants to enter season 7 must partner with another person to enter as a pair!

So whether you enter with your best friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, mom, dad, brother, sister, boss, husband, wife, neighbor, hairdresser, whomever…you must just make sure that you enter as a pair. So who will take the journey of a lifetime with you? Remember you may have to spend a long time with them in the house so choose carefully!

PLUS, in another bold change, Big Brother Africa welcomes two new countries Liberia and Sierra Leone to the Big Brother house for the first time ever, while this time round, Ethiopia bows out of the game and Mozambique will take on a new role that will be announced at a later stage.

That means that this year, if you want to enter Big Brother Africa you can do so if you and your partner are citizens from one of the following participating countries: Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Both partners must come from the same country, must be 21 years or older, must be fluent in English and must have a valid passport.

How to Apply
Interested persons can collect an entry form from the nearest MultiChoice office in their country anytime from February 5. Alternatively you can also enter by logging on to www.mnetafrica.com/bigbrother and completing an entry form online. Or download an entry form from the website, complete and email it back to bba@endemol.co.za. All online entry forms will also be available from February 5. Whatever you choose to do, do it fast because the deadline for entries is February 27, 2012!

And remember that, as with previous seasons, entrants must be fun-loving, vocal, creative, original and articulate. In addition all entrants must the social flexibility to live in close proximity with others and must be tolerant of views and lifestyle choices other than their own.

Commenting on the surprise turn of events, M-Net Africa Managing Director Biola Alabi says, “We are thrilled to be offering a huge, new, USD 300 000 prize and to include two new countries who were chosen to participate based on their ongoing interest in the series and their growing DStv audiences. And while Ethiopia won’t have a housemate this year, we’ll look to include them and other non-housemate countries in other ways if the opportunity arises, as we do every season. We are and have always been proudly committed to making this a truly African show. And as for Mozambique, they will be included with a housemate – but that’s all we are saying at the moment!”

She goes on to say, “Of course, the really big news this season is that entrants must enter as pairs. In the past we’ve seen a natural and continuous cross-over between individuals and their families, their friends. So this year, we decided to include that as part of the game. It will definitely make a dramatic addition to the series so we urge people to enter and experience what will be a uniquely different Big Brother Africa!”

So with just days to go until the official start of Big Brother Africa 7, start thinking about who you want to share this amazing adventure with. Then make sure you enter AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!
