What’s 2010 going to be about for you? Definitely will be big! Lot’s of parties with POK around the globe, the release in June of the ‘Pigalle’ mens and womens collections are gonna be a major thing for us I guess, the new restaurant by ma man Charaf, some good marketing work from Big Company, the EP of our abstract composer from the crew Kirikoo Des, the ‘21 June’ Block Party in the streets of Paris, the ‘OKOSEXUAL’ Exhibition by Oko Ebombo in the Pigalle boutique and some surprises I don’t know yet!

What are the worst trends in menswear today? Too much heritage, high prices without true reason and Christian Audigier, our local Rocky Balboa!

What’s the must have item for any man in 2010? A nice hat, jewelry and a hand made perfume!

What’s your favourite thing about where you live? The girls, the architecture, the huge difference between day and night in our neighborhood and my POK family around the store or office every single day.

What are you reading? French newspaper, Interview magazine, Photo magazine, GEO magazine, some biography books and my atlas.

What’s the next film you’ll watch? I just got two DVD’s yesterday, ‘The Pianist’ with Adrien Brody and a Jim Jarmush movie with Roberto Benigni, Tom Watts called ‘Down By Law’ so my next film is gonna be my girls choice…

Your favourite store in your city? Pigalle fo’ sure… otherwise L’Eclaireur, Chantal Thomas, Ladurre, colette, Christophe Lemaire, A.P.C. … I really like stores with their own identity.

Whats the best thing to come out of Blog Culture? I don’t know yet, I’m a bit scared by the ’surexposure’ of everything on the net… but let’s say that it’s always cool to be seen by a kid in Bueno Aires, Belgrade or Dakar…

Artist and designer Evan Hecox displays his fascination with the urban landscape on Incase products for the sixth installment of Curated by Arkitip. Available today , the Evan Hecox series has been issued in three limited editions: London, New York and Tokyo. As the project’s first artist to present a series of products, Hecox brings to life nontraditional depictions of the famed cities and their associated national emblems on our signature MacBook Sleeve and iPhone Slider Case.

Drawing inspiration from the complexity of the modern metropolis, Hecox’s stylistic approach is based on the process of amplification as it affects form and color: breaking down the image, removing certain elements and emphasizing others. In his original artistry for Curated by Arkitip, Hecox filters the mundane into captivating illustrations of London, New York and Tokyo seemingly filled with narratives beyond the images themselves, and applies them to MacBook Sleeves. The Hecox Slider Cases complement the three Sleeves, bearing instantly recognizable national symbols of the three cities. Hecox re-imagined the symbols through his stylistic approach, resulting in artistic interpretations that are both familiar and new.

Hecox has found success both as a commercial and fine artist recognized for his unique stylistic approach that blends photography, hand drawn illustration and graphic design. With an extensive portfolio that includes skateboard graphics, illustrations, books, television ads and fine art, Hecox has been exhibited in galleries across the globe, including Los Angeles, Sydney, London and Tokyo.

The video element to accompany the release of the product line is now online. Similar to what we do with the Chronicles, the video will give the viewer a closer look at the process and inspirations of the artist.

Last week we gave you a look at Maison Martin Margiela’s most recent show but now we have a closer look at the 2010 fall collection. This season is said to be “inspired by the abstraction of a black and white photograph.” The rounded shoulders give everything a really interesting silhouette and makes everything drape beautifully. My favorite though is the heavy use of leather.

I’d like to think that Cast of Vices is sharing a vernacular with Warhol’s Soupcan or Koon’s Inflatibles. We are giving our own point of view on objects that have permeated our society and had a huge impact on it with out us even acknowledging it. Bodega is about enhancing your surroundings; I think Cast of Vices is more about calling attention to what we may be sweeping under the rug.

Lawrence Weiner exhibits twice in Europe this March 2010. Known not only for his early influence in the Conceptual Art movement but for his rise in popularity of the written word in art works. The first exhibition, opening on the 28th March 2010, from Weiner is Dicht Bij, presented at BAK (Utrecht, Netherlands), which is a continuation on from his long-term research, FORMER WEST. Simultaneously, the Castellón Center for Contemporary Art is hosting Weiner’s Under the Sun, comprised of a new exhibit and permanent public sculpture in the city’s El Pinar park.

As invoked by the exhibition’s title, the two artists draw from Japan’s earliest narratives to layer their thoroughly contemporary painting with a rich lexicon of visual and historical motifs. Tat Ito has created a unique pictorial style that combines high-color, graphic abstraction with echoes of Edo-era history painting. In his acrylic-on-canvas works, finely rendered scenes of court life, village squares, and columns of military figures are depicted from an elevated, detached perspective. Yet, jostling the picture plane forward and back are flat, decorative passages of Day-Glo grids, camouflage, and other graphic patterns. In the panoramic painting Kagutsuchi (“fire god” in ancient Japanese mythology), columns of orange-suited figures dodge explosions and atmospheric clouds of polka-dotted, Yayoi Kusama-style smoke. The artist describes this approach as “a metaphor for Japanese contemporary art and culture upon which the Western viewpoint is floating,” if not entirely mixing.

By contrast, Hiro Kurata presents an uncanny integration of East and West in his faux-naif, acrylic-on-panel paintings, whose prosaic subjects and settings carry allegorical undertones. In Greek Myth 09, a baseball player and a samurai-like figure go head to head with bat and sword. In the painting Death Match and a Novelist, sumo wrestlers on a seaside boardwalk are backdrop/muse for a seated writer/harlequin in the foreground. There is a distinct and breathtaking meld of art-historical influences in Kurata’s highly evolved style, from the contemporary New Leipzig School to Hokusai woodcuts.

Tat Ito was born in 1978 in Nagoya, Japan, and earned BFA and MFA degrees in painting from Academy of Art University in San Francisco and New York Academy of Art, respectively; he currently lives and works in Queens. His work has been included in the following group exhibitions: Summer Exhibition, New York Academy of Art, NY, and Old School, Jack the Pelican Presents, Brooklyn (both 2009); Art in Free Fall, BWAC, Brooklyn (2008); and Asobi, Sutter Gallery, San Francisco, CA (2006).

Hiro Kurata was born in 1980 in Osaka, Japan, and grew up in Tokyo and Chicago; he earned a BFA degree from Parsons School of Design in Brooklyn, where he currently lives and works. Solo exhibitions of his include: Heroic, Point Gallery, Tokyo (2008); Berlin 46, Gallerie Mille D’Air, Berlin (2006); and Illustrations & Paintings: 2003-2005,
Hanae Mori Open Gallery, Tokyo (2005). His work was included in the following group exhibitions in 2009: Scribble.08, Wonderhaus, San Diego, CA; New York Connection, Gallery Target, Tokyo; and a two-person show with Tommii Lim at Ad Hoc Art in Brooklyn.
