Raspberry PI have unfortunately comes across a small delay in the shipping of their much awaited Raspberry PI Boards.

Raspberry PI is a credit card sized computer board, designed to encourage a new generation of PC users to discover and develop their programming skills

Below is information send out by RS Components Ltd about the current state of play:

Firstly, we are very grateful for all the patience you have shown as we deal with the tremendous interest in the Raspberry Pi – it has been phenomenal and it is fantastic that there is so much enthusiasm for it out there.

We know how keen you all are to get your hands on the product and get programming, however Raspberry Pi has made us aware of a ‘manufacturing hiccup’ with the initial batch that came to light following additional testing. Fortunately the problem is only minor and Raspberry Pi is working to correct it. A full explanation can be found on the Raspberry Pi website We’re continuing to work closely with the Raspberry Pi foundation to minimise any delay in getting the Raspberry Pi to you and hope that you will bear with us a little longer. We’ll keep updating our FAQs to give you information as we receive it.

A lot of you have also asked about how we are managing our queue, and when you’ll be invited to place your order for a Raspberry Pi. We’re going to be receiving the boards in batches, so as we receive confirmation that the batches are ready, we’ll be inviting people in on a first-come, first served basis, from time of original registration, to place orders on our new Raspberry Pi online store. The invitations will be sent to groups that match the number of boards we have available, to ensure that if you place an order, we’re able to take it and tell you when we can ship your Raspberry Pi.

Thanks again for your patience, and we’ll be in touch again next week for a further update.

Heres hoping the delay is not too long

Nokia has formally embraced its version HTML5 version of Nokia Maps when being used on iOS and Android devices. The mapping software has been in development for HTML5 mobile previously, but today marks the first day Nokia encourages its use on both platforms which it otherwise competes with.

Very little of Nokia currently embraces iOS and Android. Since the move to Windows Phone (away from Symbian and MeeGo), Nokia largely no longer operates in the technical terrain of software that overlaps with iOS and Android. The two exceptions to this are the Qt Framework, and HTML5.

It still remains unclear why Nokia Maps continues its push into HTML5. While Nokia and Microsoft may have agreed to the offering of Nokia Maps on other Windows Phone 7 devices, and possibly the entire Windows 8 device range, HTML5 still is not needed for Nokia Maps to exist. It also does not provide for a transition away from Symbian, as the Symbian codebase for Nokia Maps is still regarded as the best out there.

The answer may lie in divisions at Nokia. Since the acquisition of NAVTEQ, Nokia Maps has fallen under the umbrella of a larger, cross-division initiative at the company. NAVTEQ may wish to enter into the same domain as Telenav, which also is developing a free HTML5 turn-by-turn navigation tool. NAVTEQ may wish to offer this as a bundled service to mobile solution providers, such as offering mobile web sites the ability to initiate navigation sessions to retail, and other locations, in-browser.

Another answer may be purely out of spite. Rival company Google, which offers Google Maps, said that it intended to bring Google Maps Navigation to platforms other than Android. However, the company in years since has appeared to backtrack from that commitment, refusing to release a timetable for implementation on any other platform. Despite Google’s ethos that HTML is superior to other application platforms, Google Maps on HTML does not offer any form of turn-by-turn navigation.

The latest developments to Nokia Maps other than iOS and Android support are largely for future use. Nokia added voice navigation of instructions, but enabled it only for walking navigation. This is likely to deter from users attempting to use the voice navigation while driving, as the feature is still actively being developed.

Telenav, Nokia Maps largest competitor in the HTML5 navigation arena, has yet to release a public beta of their HTML5 navigation application. Announced in late 2011, the company said that it intended to make public access available some time in early 2012. The company is still only offering select developers access to the software in a private, closed beta.

Arch Linux ARM is now available for download for the Raspberry PI. Arch Linux is a very light weight Linux distribution and this distribution does not come with a GUI and therefore not suitable for beginners in the Linux world.

Below is the full information and the package can be downloaded from here.

Arch Linux ARM for Raspberry Pi is now ready to go! It’s available now on our downloads page. Huge thanks to Dave (pepedog on the forums) for working so hard on this project over the last six months.

Says Liam:

Thanks to Velocix for providing us with free usage of their Content Delivery Network and also a huge thanks to all of our community donated mirrors. Please do not be offended if your mirror has not been added to the load balancer; It has taken days to get it to the point where it is now and I feel that we have plenty of capacity.

Thanks to Shaun (ZeroHour) from Edugeek.net for helping me with server configuration and the design of the load balancing system, to Turbo @ frambozenbier.org for helping out in general with testing and implementation, and to thank Zach Cross for code reviews and his general support of the system.

Finally, thanks to hxxr and Hugo Rodrigues for pointing out security flaws in the load balancer system which have now been fixed.

Arch Linux ARM is based on Arch Linux, which aims for simplicity and full control to the end user. It provides a lightweight base structure that allows you to shape the system to your needs. For this reason, the Arch Linux ARM image for the Raspberry Pi does not come with a graphical user interface, though you can easily install one yourself. Please note that this distribution may not be suitable for beginners.

Arch Linux ARM is on a rolling-release cycle that can be updated daily through small packages instead of huge updates every few months.

To update the package list:

pacman -Syu

To Install LXDE:

pacman -S lxde xorg-xinit xf86-video-fbdev

So you’ve got your shiny new Samsung Galaxy Note. Well, you know its now time for you to protect your little investment. Previously we should a nice Executive looking case for the Note and now its time to check out a Flexishield Skin as part of your Galaxy Note Accessories needs.

So a Gel case is a Gel case hey ? Well Not really. From the eBay knock offs I’ve seen there lots of issues with how well it fits on the device.

For this Case it does what is says on the Tin, good tight fit and not too thin to offer not enough protection and not too thick to add too much bulk.

Video:

Excellent case but it does seem a tad pricey at £9.99, but then theres no hits or miss with it. Thanks to MobileFun for providing the case for review.

Claiming that the timing of the event meshes poorly with the company’s product launches, Microsoft Corporate Vice President of Corporate Communications Frank X. Shaw announced on Tuesday that after CES 2012, Microsoft would no longer deliver a keynote address or have a large booth at the annual trade fair. CES’s organizers, the Consumer Electronics Association, confirmed that the 2012 keynote would be Microsoft’s fourteenth and last.

Shaw’s explanation appeared to make sense. Microsoft’s major consumer product launches tend to fall in the second half of the year, and next year’s big release—Windows 8—isn’t going to buck that trend. There’s an outside chance that Microsoft might talk Xbox 720 at CES 2012, but that too won’t be launching any time soon. The company’s presence at CES has traditionally been big and expensive, and the company no longer feels it yields a valuable return on that investment.

After the 2011 keynote earlier this year, this was hardly surprising. The 2011 keynote was dominated by a mix of products already on the market—Kinect, Windows Phone—and the Windows-on-ARM processor announcement. Though significant, this announcement had no relevance to consumers or indeed 2011. Windows-on-ARM products will only ship in 2012, and most consumers have little interest in the vagaries of instruction set architectures or system-on-chip designs.

But intrigue was added to this apparently straightforward announcement when GigaOM reported that according to people “inside Microsoft,” the withdrawal was due to CEA refusing to allow Redmond to make the keynote presentation beyond next year. In other words, it wasn’t the software giant’s decision at all. In retaliation, Microsoft pulled its future booth plans.

The story took another twist when The Verge reported that its sources backed Shaw’s original explanation. CEA tried to get Microsoft to sign on for another three years of keynoting after 2011, but Microsoft refused, signing on for only a single additional year (2012)—showing that the company’s plans to leave the event are long-standing. CEA did want more money for future keynotes, which helped push Microsoft away, but ultimately the decision to leave was Microsoft’s.

Microsoft will still be at future CES events in some capacity to connect to partners, press, and the general public. But big reveals and launches of major products will in the future be made at Microsoft-organized, Microsoft-specific events. Events that happen when Redmond says they should happen, and that make Microsoft products the star of the show.
