There are so few things to write about in the life of Chris Crewe this last month... some orders from Saatchi happened, the plague happened, enough said, everyone has been affected by this global crisis.

I found myself stealing a few tubes of fluorescent Liquitex from Michaels, I am like a drug addict for art, I decided I need to take a break.

Despite hard times I have been gifted a Segway by a dear friend to help keep me traveling, and keep me moving freely around the city, I have never had so much fun; I feel like I can fly. I have found so many cool spots in the city searching for ideas, I have been touched by every piece of graffiti, and every image logo or tag that I have found, If you are interested in my latest finds check my Pinterest Page.

I have promised myself this will be the most fun summer ever.

The release of the Saatchi catalog kind of burned me out this month, I am dizzy and sore from all the running around, the people around me are right, I need to rest…

Saatchi Art Catalog Spring 2020

It is okay that I didn’t make a fortune, I never count my eggs before they hatch. This state of emergency might be to blame, everybody running from the Corona virus pandemic does not make a nice season to buy a painting.

I decided to take a break after the catalog, I've been zipping around the city gathering inspiration as normal.

When I stopped painting for a couple days I got an overwhelming idea for a furniture design, a bit of effort and I ended up making it happen! I have been hard at work designing up a storm.

This fireplace was inspired by my memories of abandoned houses and skate parks in the 1990's, it feels relaxed, but also one of a kind.
The over-sized cigarette on the right is a lamp which sparkles with all the realness of a cigarette.

Pure pop culture elegance!

Although I quit years ago I LOVE THIS LAMP!!! The sexy and seductive appeal of it gently glowing in the corner reminds me of those good times, the top is dotted with large red jewels which let light from the inside. I think smoking is ready to make a come back, it's gorgeous.

I will be experimenting with furniture designs for the next few months, I will share my designs as I have them ready, check back in the coming posts!

Just When You Thought it's Over... Spring!

Boy this has been a long winter, I get relief from talking like it is over already I tell myself I smell spring in the air when I go outside. My long dark nights spent curled up on the sofa with stomach pain, worrying myself to death about this situation or that one.

Paperwork is coming at me left and right claiming noise violations, harassment, paint on the hallway carpet, and worse of all legal action. I let it all roll off my back, I am way too interested in my own business to get angry at the evil property management empire. They can get rooted.

I am in love with the world, and I feel the love coming back on me, it can be a beautiful place if you let it, in my darkest most painful moments I escape into a deep crevasse of my mind and find relief from within, the answers to everything are inside me.

I have been chugging along as usual, carrying things that are way too heavy for me, going out for walks downtown in the night time, being inspired by objects, tags, logos, anything that catches my imagination. Sometimes I find a cool souvenir to bring home with me.

The same day it became official that my money for art supplies was cut off completely, an email rolled in from Saatchi telling me they were featuring me in the Spring Catalog, "get ready for an increase in sales," it boldly states;
PURE EXCITEMENT!
I consider this the largest formal recognition I have received for my painting so far.

As if that wasn't enough, the following night I answered a call from a curator at Singulart in Germany inviting me to be a part of their online collection. Just
when I thought things looked their darkest, here comes some bright. The darker the shadow, the brighter the light, I suppose... would hate to bank the future I have planned on shadows though, leave that for the groundhogs.

I remain an active presence in the world, good things that happen to me will multiply and domino into infinite, I beat to the metronome of my fellow human being hardcore. I want, like anyone, for human consciousness to continue forward and prosper forever.

Big Help from a Stranger | I'm Somewhere Over the Rainbow Now | Survived the Holiday Season

The things us artists go through, the people we meet, the realness of being free for the day to be inspired and continue being generally happy is an incredible leap of faith. Knowing I will not end up on an episode of Hoarders miserable and cursing out my loved ones one day, art takes care of me, I believe in myself.

I took a back alley route home and found a flawless full piece of plywood that was obviously discarded, 10 mins later I have it balanced on my back and I am trying to make it to the streetcar, where I was hoping to load it on in some way. Suddenly I heard a guy yell, "Hey buddy, where you going with that" I could barely look up but I saw a Canada Post driver with the back of his truck open. I told him where my studio is, he laughed and said "that's way too far, it will be outside the front of your building when you get home" all I could say was "thanks" and he helped me put it in his van.

When I got home it was there waiting for me!!!

Thanks to an aware and present human being with a little extra help to offer, I will be sure to pass this one forward!

I immediately got to work, one of the projects I am working on is making mural paper out of old and discarded books, this is my first work on that project and I think it has a lot of promise.

The second great thing that has happened this month is that I finished my Concrete Rainbow, using an alchemists list of ingredients to describe it properly but I think I finally have it to a state of perfection, I will list the ingredients on it's Saatchi page.

Over all it has been another fantastic month with many magical happenings, I was gifted a membership to Artscape Daniels Launchpad this holiday season so I will update on how that goes.

While cleaning my studio this week I came across many forgotten pieces of work that were undocumented and not categorized, some aren't exactly intentional art... more like the product of daydreaming.

I often doodle with latex paint, putting it in Pepsi bottles and squirting it all over an object or carving, making a shell over a piece of architecture and a piece of wood forever binding them together. Carving forms and using canvas like they are tissues while I am dreaming, I never hesitate to break a brick, or acquire a shape I need to dream about... see what it will look like. In my studio the tools and the magic are all around me!

Recently I have come to a strange realization that as an artist I am able to carve any form, put any image onto a canvas, this suddenly feels like a tremendous pressure instead of a joy. Being able to do anything can be so overwhelming that one ends up doing nothing, many artists suffer from this idea and the creation of their work suffers. Fortunately it can be turned around with some meditation to slow down the ideas and pick through them in a mindful way, in my older age I have come to realize that I am only human, the art sustains me but I must do my job to nurture myself as well.

Made myself some new shoes along the way!

I have decided to finish the clothing line, it has been great fun giving you all this mark to wear, I am proud of each and every one I make. This line will be available until Nov 1st 2019

This week I created another extra large sledgehammer abstract, capturing that perfect moment with the most permanent of polymers. I stand in awe of this new work, the result is a giant painting that is nothing less than cathartic.

Explosion in Red | 2019

I have recently been able to source different sorts of latex paint, interior, exterior, etc... "Off colors" sold at a local hardware store, it has been my saving grace. I have completely switched from traditional acrylic; I am convinced it is the most beautiful and colorfast paint available. I love how pouring it over different shapes gives them a tough shell; it mummifies them and gives them a state of permanence.

Several items I have mummified with paint others are drying, this is the ongoing inspiration for my architecture series

In early September I slammed my 8 lbs sledgehammer down and created another series; this idea has two sides. The end loaded with paint, as I usually do when starting a new work, I forgot what I had underneath and broke a large granite tile. The shape of the break astonished me, it was so beautiful, almost perfect, I became fascinated; it ended up changing my perspective on the mark I create, it was the pause between piano notes, the other part of the story behind the force had to be told. I dreamed of more and more possibilities... the paint mark I created in the beginning with my sledgehammer was just a start. I thought of the tile underneath as a type of film recording the "negative" image/impact of my painting like traditional photography, it tells a story I had never dreamed of before. I instinctively grabbed a can of latex paint and poured it over the broken granite tile, covering it completely... also covering the piece of wood underneath it freezing the moment in time.

This experimental side project soon became my main focus and the birth of a new series. The sense of permanence I have achieved using latex house paint poured on architectural elements is a perfect arena to explore the forcefulness of the sledgehammer and continue this journey.

Catching the Negative Impact of the Mark

The Broken Tile that Changed My Life | 26''x14'' | 2019

Recently I slammed down my 8lbs sledgehammer as I usually do when starting a new work. This time I forgot what I had stored underneath of it and ended up breaking a large granite tile.

The shape of the break astonished me it was so beautiful; almost divine in nature. I became fascinated by it's strange resemblance to my beloved sledgehammer mark, eventually I grabbed a can of latex paint and poured it over the broken granite tile covering it completely to capture the event forever... literally freezing the moment in time so I could get a better look. I left the piece undisturbed in the corner of my studio for weeks in the stillness of a far dark corner until I retrieved it weeks later and found it had dried to a mirror like finish (above right).

I couldn't put my finger on it. This event ended up changing my perspective on the different sides of force, one on each plane, open air and through concrete density, I needed to obtain a deeper perspective of what I create. There is a whole side to the story of what makes the paint dance that is being lost here, between the transfer of force into the surface supporting the paint there is an even more beautiful "echo" like mark created which goes down and through the ground, this is what I have been missing, it was the pause between piano notes. The reverse perspective had to be illustrated; I was dreaming of more and more possibilities... my mentor was correct; I was only at the beginning of my journey.

The granite tile was like a type of film recording the "negative" image/impact of my painting; it tells a story I never knew was happening. This experimental side project soon gained all my attention becoming the main focus of my work and quickly ushered in the birth of a new series.

Force Time Relation Impulse...

I decided to do a little reading into the physics of a collision and the forces involved. I came away with a stellar vocabulary to describe my work, I decided to write up a short piece to show off its amazingness!!!
Through a collision, I change the paints momentum from zero to some value given by its mass times its velocity; this causes an elastic expanse of paint like sunbeams which rise upward and outward from the center.

The first mark

Eventually, its gravitational attraction returns as the weight of the paint pulls itself back towards earth...

General Idea

It all lands with a crash... Progression of the boarders stop as small pools develop; mixing of the pigments slows to nothing, forming a stable equilibrium. The post-collision situation has no energy remaining.

It becomes a moment in time; frozen forever in a quantum reference frame, ready to hang.

An interesting aspect about our society is the assorted variety of opinions we all seem to have, despite our shared experience as human beings. What may appear to overpower a few, works distinctively for some and acts as background for others; this difference is energizing for everybody, at least this unites us!

Understand this: by going to an exhibition or gallery night one settles on the choice to venture into a secretly arranged and unfamiliar world, loaded with fervor, we frequently must encounter and challenge art. Constant questioning keeps postmodern art honest and is another ingredient of the invisible jello that ties every person on earth together in a loose way; I also call it "The fabric of humanity."

Pick One that Pops!

This last week has been raining which has given me a lot of time to sit and think about how to sharpen my game, of course, I want to represent my work the best I can. I added another sign which briefly explains my work, also working on a friendly introduction getting the people walking by feeling more comfortable. I want to be connecting with people on a more personal level
I want people to see me for who I am.

When I had to leave my job as a Logo Designer 8 months ago I picked up a paintbrush the very next day. Starting to produce Art again has filled me with a renewed confidence which continues to grow as time passes.

I sit in the fashion district during the day with other artists in the shade and muse about life, selling the occasional work and smoking the occasional joint. I feel connected with my city; I am totally at ease if even for a little while.

I listen to people walking, sometimes I jot down their comments in my sketchbook. One of the best was when a little girl stopped and said "Daddy aren't they beautiful? They're like the big bang". Her father ended up waiting while she picked out her favorite one then bought it for her. What a great Dad!

I am filled with the same pride a father would feel when I am beside my work, but I also feel like I am standing downtown completely naked, rejection can also be hard.

Gone too far? Keep Moving Forward

I have been beset with persistent creativity that seems to grow stronger as time goes by. I do everything to make sure it is sustainable but alas it snowballs to become more consuming every day. I have been saved by divine intervention before and I am sure it will happen again, I'll keep going forward towards a possible endpoint, time is short and I am curious to see what it looks like.

Sketchbook June 2019

I have found a new way to paint, recording an explosion caused by a Sledgehammer's force. I have never been so in love with an idea I have abandoned everything including personal relationships, clean clothes, and respecting the paint free zones of my studio.

One might look at this and think it is a lack of self-discipline, but rather it is because I am deeply concerned with other things. Spellbinding and enchanting things.

A Snippet from the news about happiness

My family has heard enough, my Mom made a comment at Sunday dinner with the family she thinks I have gone insane; of course I offered no push back, I stopped showing up. In my own best judgment I am perfectly sane but who knows?

Through repeated experimentation and strong communication, as such, I have been given insight into the inner workings of the cosmos.

People who are spiritual often look crazy, I have never put much stake in looks. Dr Phil always tells his feuding guests "No matter how flat you make a pancake it has two sides". Two many sides if you ask me, thousands of sides actually, it gets quite boring when you really take a look.

This last few weeks of talking with my spiritual advisor and artistic mentor, I was given the advice to take a rest and sit...

Contemplate my new body of work; these abstracts...

I am now a "painter of abstracts", I realized this was a new thing for me.
I was determined to take wise advice and just sit... think... this was the scariest and most vague thing I have been told to do, now I am certain I know what she meant.

Self Portrait | Summer 2019

I did need to get lost one more time, this breakthrough was not through to the event; there was a false bottom somewhere. I need to re-define my starting point without any direction, I was being told to stop... just stop.

Days turned into weeks of stillness before the answer sort of settled around me like dust I could not notice.

I feel like something was handed to me by the great beyond; the very powers that be have decided to haunt my life for all of my nitpicking and complaining.

This is an idea that is worth a lot to the thinking man and it comes with a lot of responsibility; I was granted a gift, no contract with the devil...

Whatever magic dealt this hand, I want more of it.

Some sort of release... A new beginning...

Art to the People | All Summer | 2019

In this disappearing and unfolding maze of a world, one of my biggest fears is that the next great idea will be lost, fate will get it wrong and something will mess up... The next Einstein will be born in the third world and die from hunger-related illnesses within a year.

We will be left in the dark ages for an unknown amount of time and never know why.

One thing I know is there are no second shots; in life, lessons are repeated until they are learned and I have been here before...

When I brought my work back to the World Wide Web for the first time in almost 8 years I was pulled in a thousand directions from "Etsy" to "Google Ads" and "GoDaddy’s dedicated SEO team”. Quickly I was drained of my time, energy, and finances... is anyone actually buying Art online?

My idea was almost lost. 💡

I am a Painter; I was taught to paint. Time to center me and begin again.

In my heart of hearts, I believe that a person should stand in front of a painting and fall in love with it, this is the way artwork is bought in my studio.

My Paintings on Display for the Public

There is a corner in Toronto where the edge of Chinatown meets the Fashion District; Queen and Spadina was always occupied by an artist of some sort in the mid to late 2000s but now stands cold and silent. I remember walking by every day on my way to school glancing at the artists displaying their work and sharing a joint in the shade, I became determined to occupy this space again to bring back the tradition to Toronto.

June 1^st felt like the first day of summer to me, I brought my stuff and set up!

I Sold a bunch of small works on canvas for super cheap and really connected with the public… my people, I got feedback from who I make Art for, I remembered why I make it.

I asked and the universe provides, I found myself in the depths of my building, where the old and forgotten about paint cans live, the smell that sits inside would turn you away, not me friends, it will dry eventually... enjoy!

The Biggest Bang!

A certain flux is created in my paintings when I smash down the Sledgehammer, continuous energy is trapped inside my work; erupting forever open and outward.

One day after sweeping my studio I began to look at my broom as a potential paintbrush, I broke the handle in half and dipped it in some fresh acrylic. I stood on the canvas up on my easel and began swinging as hard as I could, knocking it down and setting it up again like one of those toy punching clowns. I enjoyed the marks that can be created with extreme amounts of force; tiny intricacies and miracles... I decided to continue to pursue this kind of mark making.

My first action painting was this painting I hit with a broom over and over

My Ongoing "Planned Event Series" Led to the Event That Created Abstract Slam Painting #4:

Wine Glass Full of Paint - On Coffee Table - Smashed with Metal Rod

To create this event I filled a wine glass with layers of paint like a parfait, topping it off with a drizzle of Indian ink and gently placing it on the nearby coffee table to set the scene. As planned, I smashed it off a coffee table with a metal pipe then threw the pipe to hit the dripping canvas.

After aiming and smashing as violently as I could, the silence was deafening, the paint splashed onto the canvas on the wall and it was left dripping like a waterfall of high quality liquitex thick as peanut butter; sparkling with a pinch of glitter and broken glass.
I threw the paint covered pipe at work feeling somewhat satisfied as I saw it hit the center and left a diagonal splash... I left the room for a couple of hours.
When I came back into my studio and began cleaning the mess I had a new sense of pride; I kept looking over at my work and smiling, watching it dry.

Setting this up today made me laugh at my current frustrations,

This is what I found left of the Wine Glass and the Pipe after cleaning up the mess. Abstract Slam Painting was completed as part of my "Planned Event" Series (2015-2019)

This is the pipe that I used to smash a wine glass full of paint off of a coffee table, the force clearly did some damage to the pipe as well.

I painted this work as one of many in preparation for an interesting summer this 2019, I am carefully experimenting with various thicknesses of paint, sizes of ground, and techniques to create the mark and propagate the paint across various picture planes, forever capturing a moment in time.
