Most true 100% natural latex foam will meet the most stringent textile and furniture emissions standards such as ecoInstitut, Oeko-Tex and Greenguard.</p>
<p><strong>Synthetic Latex (Foam)</strong></p>
<p>Synthetic latex is made up of synthetic compounds that mimic the properties of natural latex. Rather than being obtained from rubber trees, it is made of petrochemicals also known as oil. Several types of synthetic latex exist but SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber) is the most common type of synthetic latex used in the production of synthetic latex foam. </p>
<p>Synthetic latex foam is usually more dull and less springy than natural latex foam. It is generally less durable and prone to tearing than natural latex foam. Synthetic latex foam also tends to have a more offensive odour than natural latex foam.</p>

<h3><strong>Talalay Latex or Dunlop Latex Process</strong></h3>
<p>Which Makes a Better Latex Mattress and Why</p>
<p>One of the most challenging decisions consumers encounter when <strong>shopping for a latex mattress</strong> is determining the differences between Talalay and Dunlop latex.</p>
<p>People usually want to know what makes them different, why one costs more, and which is more comfortable and durable. To further confuse the issue, synthetic and natural latex can both be used with either method. It is important to research and understand the differences between the types before purchasing a new bed.</p>
<p>To determine whether a Dunlop or Talalay latex mattress would be best, you should understand the processes used to create them, their inherent properties, and the benefits each provides.</p>
<h3>Latex Mattress Manufacturing</h3>
<p>The terms Talalay and Dunlop refer solely to the method used to change the latex liquid into the foam material used in beds.</p>

<p>The <strong>Dunlop process</strong> was the original method for making latex foam, as developed by the Dunlop company in the 1920’s.</p>

<li>The frothy liquid is poured into a mould.</li>
<li>The liquid is allowed to gel in open air.</li>
<li>The mould then undergoes heat curing (vulcanisation) to solidify the foam.</li>
<li>Dunlop mattresses undergo one rinse before being allowed to dry.</li>

<p><strong>The Making of a Talalay Latex Mattress</strong></p>
<p>The <strong>Talalay process</strong> was developed in the 1940’s by the Talalay brothers. This process allows for greater control over density and firmness.</p>
<ol>
<li>The Talalay method begins with latex that has been whipped into a foamy consistency.</li>
<li>This mixture is placed in a mould which is vacuum sealed, and excess air is removed to allow the latex to evenly fill the mould.</li>
<li>The mold is flash frozen to -20 degrees Fahrenheit which maintains the even consistency.</li>
<li>Via the pins in the mould, CO2 is added to gel the latex.</li>
<li>It is then vulcanised at high temperatures (220-230 degrees) to cure.</li>
<li>At this point the mattress is released from the mold.</li>
<li>The latex mattress then undergoes five rinses to eliminate any residues.</li>
<li>The material is then thoroughly dried before packaging.</li>
</ol>

<p>To summarise and provide an analogy, Latex International, one of the largest manufacturers of latex products describes the difference like this:</p>
<p>Talalay latex is like a chocolate souffle; although the process is long, your end product is a buoyant, airy, complex delight. Dunlop latex is more like a tray of brownies; tasty, but dense and flat in comparison.</p>

<h3>Key Differences Between Talalay and Dunlop Latex</h3>
<p>The ability for a mattress to remain durable, offer support and provide pressure relief are very important when determining which one to purchase. The two types of latex mattress manufacturing result in significant differences likely to impact the decision of which is best for your needs.</p>
<p>(Statistics below are from Latex International).</p>
<p><strong><em>Consistency<br></em></strong>Consistency is a significant factor when determining whether a Talalay latex mattress or Dunlop model is best. Dunlop manufacturing allows sediments to settle, which creates a mattress that is softer on the top and firm on the bottom.</p>
<p>The latex particles may also be unevenly distributed, yielding a lumpy sensation. The vacuum and flash-freezing steps in the Talalay methods evenly disperse the particles, creating a finer, consistent cell matrix that yields a consistent feel throughout the material.</p>
<p><em><b>Firmness</b><br></em>The firmness of Talalay latex can be adjusted by controlling the amount of latex in the mold before pressurisation. With Dunlop latex, the only way to soften the material is to add fillers which disrupt the natural integrity of the foam. Thus, Talalay products can achieve a much wider range of firmness levels, and prove superior especially in softer applications.</p>
<p><strong><em>Pressure Relief<br></em></strong>The vacuum process of Talalay latex allows it to retain elasticity, whereas the flat moulding process of Dunlop creates a firmer product. Think of a rubber balloon compared to an eraser. When it comes to mattress materials, this elasticity means Talalay material can better contour to the body to relieve pressure points.</p>
<p>One study indicates that Talalay latex provides 33% greater pressure relief over Dunlop material.</p>
<p><em><b>Breathable</b><br></em>How breathable a mattress is can have a big impact on sleep as science shows that cooler temperatures are more conducive to quality rest. The large, open, round cells of Talalay latex allow more air flow than smaller, closed, inconsistent cells of Dunlop. Talalay latex thus can be up to four times more breathable.</p>
<p><strong><em>Durability<br></em></strong>When buying a new mattress, people usually want a bed that will last. Impressions can be troublesome to many, and research has shown that Talalay latex resists compression three times longer than Dunlop.</p>
<p>This is due primarily to cell structure, as Dunlop’s snowflake-type matrix is less capable of resisting compression and more likely to weaken over time.</p>
<p><strong><em>Manufacturing Costs &amp; Availability<br></em></strong>Dunlop latex is typically cheaper the cheaper of the two, and many wonder why. It really boils down to the effort and resources used in the process, and the availability of the product. The Dunlop process takes approximately an hour and is fairly common.</p>
<p>The Talalay process takes up to 14 hours and involves more specialised equipment. Very few facilities in the world produce Talalay process latex, thus due to “economies of scale”, this process remains somewhat more expensive.</p>
<p><strong><em>Is One More Natural?<br></em></strong>Either process can be made using 100% natural, blended, or synthetic latex. We discuss the differences between synthetic and natural latex in detail in a previous article, “What is in a Latex Mattress?“, which are also important to understand when comparing latex beds.</p>
<p>We recommend opting for all-natural latex whichever type you chose in order to reduce chemicals and maximise benefits.</p>
<h3>Which Makes the Best Mattress?</h3>
<p>When the two products are compared side-by-side, a clear winner results. Talalay latex proves superior in consistency, pressure relief, breath ability, and customisability, all factors critical to comfort.</p>
<p>While Talalay can cost more than Dunlop, the improvements in in durability means consumers will be able to utilise their mattresses longer. </p>
<p>Thus, the ideal latex mattress would contain a Talalay core and comfort layers in order to receive the greatest benefits.</p>]]>

At this point, you can choose to self-manage your own funds, in which case you make claims to NDIS personally, you can select a Plan Manager to manage your funds for you or the NDIA is able to manage your funding for you.<br></p>

<p>A need was identified in the Campbelltown area, due to the population growth and expanding home estates. The store creates an inviting atmosphere and is an enjoyable place to work. We also required ample and convenient parking including disabled parking for our customers. </p>

<p>We want to target specialised delicate areas of the overweight and disabled as traditionally, these market segments have been under catered for and these customers require a high level of service and experienced sales people.After much ground work visiting a lot of similar retailers, we made the decision to combine two of the best businesses in one location and meet the high customer service we wanted to offer and provide a point of difference to our competitors. </p>

<p>We also needed to offer products that conform to the highest standards and accommodate the sleeping needs and budget requirements of every customer. Therapeutic Goods Administration approved adjustable beds have become a mainstay of Sleep Doctor Campbelltown. Ensuring customers have access to the highest quality medical and luxury variants of adjustable beds is an ongoing priority. </p>

<p>The total range increased in 2015 to ten beds and twelve mattresses which gave customers the flexibility to customise their bed to suit their sleeping habits and medical needs. In 2018, the range grew to over thirty beds, over 30 mattresses and in most sizes. <p>We now attribute 78% of our turnover to online advertising including our website, and have found that there are no more direct channels that people take to purchase. Our customers in particular tend to find their own pathway having frequented facebook, Instagram, our website, direct marketing and our store. </p>
<p><br></p>
<p>SleepDoctor customers as a majority purchase instore, with in-store testing still being a major consideration in the buying process for beds and mattresses. For candles and body care products, a vast majority purchase online with our free delivery over $50 attracting most customers to purchase. </p>

<p>Our understanding of the science of sleep mirrors our understanding of the human brain: we are only just scratching the surface in what we currently know. Yet we know enough to know “how we sleep” affects every aspect of our lives and performance on the sporting field.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>It took for me to have children (who didn’t sleep at night!!), to really appreciate the impact of poor quality sleep on cognitive function, immune ability and physical performance! This article will examine the impact that sleep deficit has on performance and injury, with a future article discussing how to improve sleep. </p>
<p> </p>
<p><b>Why do we sleep? </b></p>
<p> </p>
<p>It was once thought that the brain simply “shuts-down” during sleep, yet we now know that there are much more complex activities happening. One way to explain what occurs is “brain housekeeping”: the brain performs checks, repairs and cleaning toxins (beta-amyloid amongst others) [1] that build up during the day. In addition to this, good sleep promotes tissue repair, immune function and hormonal and metabolic rebalancing [2, 3]. </p>
<p> </p>
<p><b>How do we measure sleep? </b></p>
<p> </p>
<p>There are continued advancements in technology for quantifying sleep quality. Currently the gold standard is a sleep study conducted in the lab via polysomnography which measures multiple variables including brain waves (EEG), breathing, heart rate and rhythm, muscle activity, eye movement and blood oxygen saturation. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>One could argue, however, that sleeping in a lab connected to multiple machines might not give an accurate result when compared to the individuals “natural” environment [4]. Enter the portable sleep monitoring devices. With the rise of popularity in these devices (FitBit, Oura ring, ReadiBand) and phone apps, the question has to be raised on their accuracy. Most devices are similar in that they are based on the same type of sensor (accelerometer and/or noise). Ultimately, sleep is best tracked through polysomnography, but these devices offer much more accessible and convenient options for casual users to track their activity. Multiple studies [5-8] conclude that wrist monitors can be quite accurate when it comes to estimating information such as total time asleep, sleep percentage, and how long after sleep waking occurs. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>It has been my personal experience with sleep monitoring on both myself and my patients, that if you wake in the morning and you feel tired, you haven’t had ideal sleep quality/quantity. Whilst it’s nice to be able to put an objective measure on everything, sometimes subjective measures can be just as useful, as previously discussed in Saw et al’s study on training response [9]. At a basic level, recording when you went to bed, when you woke, and subjectively measuring how rested you feel in the morning can give you a good indication of your sleep quality. </p>
<p> </p>
<p><b>How sleep much is normal? </b></p>
<p> </p>
<p>The National Sleep Foundation’s recommendation for young adults (18-25 years) and adults (26-64 years) is between 7-9 hours. From the research, we see that athletes commonly average below 7 hours [10]. A recent questionnaire based study found that 50% of highly trained and elite athletes were identified as “poor” sleepers, with 28% experiencing daytime sleepiness [11]. </p>

<p>For athletic individuals, sleep is paramount when considering the training response, which requires a balance between stress, fatigue and recovery[12]. Therefore athletes should look to promote recovery which would then decrease their stress/fatigue state. Sleep is surprisingly often overlooked by athletes themselves as a cause of fatigue [13]. Poor sleep quantity and/or poor quality appears to exist in many athletic populations, which can be due to a combination of scheduling of training sessions and competition, travel fatigue, and impaired sleep-onset due to increased arousal post competition. </p>

<p><b>Effects of Sleep on injury and performance </b></p>
<p> </p>
<p>We previously briefly mentioned the benefits of sleep, but what about the detrimental effects of decreased sleep? </p>
<p> </p>
<p><i>Injury and Sleep</i></p>
<p> </p>
<p>Milewski et al’s study on adolescent athletes found those who sleep on average less than 8 hours per night have 1.7 times greater risk of being injured than those who slept more than 8 hours [14].</p>
<p> </p>
<p>In another study on elite adolescent athletes, von Rosen et al found that sleeping more than 8 hours during a week reduced risk of injury by 61% [15]. </p>
<p> </p>
<p><i>Illness and Sleep</i></p>
<p> </p>
<p>A range of metabolic and immunologic process are negatively affected by poor sleep [16]. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>Reduced sleep quantity was associated with increased incidence of illness within the next 7 days in competitive male AFL players [17] </p>
<p> </p>
<p>Those who sleep less than 5 hours are 4.5 times more likely to suffer a cold vs those who sleep 7 hours [18]. </p>
<p> </p>
<p><i>Performance <span style="background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">and Sleep</span></i></p>
<p> </p>
<p>Reductions in motor and cognitive performance, reaction times, and mood state/emotional stability are often observed in sleep-deprived athletes [19]. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>Poor sleep quality, particularly during high training loads and competition periods, has been identified as a marker of under recovery and an early sign of overreaching [20]. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>Brandt et al’s study on Brazilian athletes revealed a relationship between poor sleep quality and lost matches during a competition[21]. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>Silva et al found a correlation between sleep duration and competition performance in elite gymnasts [22].Napping improves running performance in those endurance runners that had less than 7 hours sleep [23]. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>This information should hopefully highlight to you the reader on the importance of sleep, and get you starting the conversation (if you haven’t already) with your athletes about their sleep habits. In our next instalment, we will discuss what can be done in those with suboptimal sleeping habits.</p>

    <title>What does the way you sleep do to your body? Sleeping positions explained.</title>

      <![CDATA[<p><em>Everyone has a preferred sleep position; back, side, stomach and everything in between. While there isn't necessarily a 'best' position to sleep in, there are advantages and disadvantages to each. </em></p>

<h2>SIDE SLEEPING </h2>
<p>This is one of the most popular sleeping positions for adults and has loads of advantages and very few disadvantages. Side sleeping positions are especially good when sleeping on the left hand side due to the way our organs are arranged as this can help to alleviate acid reflux and heart burn, improve circulation, boost digestion and helps to drain toxins from the lymph nodes. Sleeping on your side is also helpful for preventing sleep apnea and snoring!</p>
<p>The downside? Because the side of your face is pressed against a pillow all night, this could lead to wrinkles, and if you like to sleep curled up in the Fetal Position, you are putting extra pressure on your diaphragm which can make it difficult to breath deeply.<br><br></p>
<p>If you find that you get a lot of shoulder pain sleeping on your side, your mattress may be too firm for you, more often than not, your pillow may not be the correct height between your shoulder and chin.</p>
<h2>BACK SLEEPING</h2>
<p>Not a very popular way to sleep, but possibly the best for you! Sleeping on your back reduces pressure on your body, allowing your back, neck and spine to rest in a neutral position. When your head is elevated slightly you also help to reduce acid reflux, and by not having your face on the pillow helps to prevent those dreaded wrinkles! </p>
<p>This position is no good for sleep apnea sufferers or snorers however as it can create some pressure on your airways.</p>
<p>Having the correct mattress is always important, and when you sleep on your back you need to ensure that your mattress is supporting you through your lower lumber and not too firm that it is pushing your chest up. You pillow needs to only elevate your head slightly.</p>
<h2>STOMACH SLEEPING</h2>
<p>While this is good for your airways, this position is terrible for your body more often or not! Sleeping on your stomach causes strain to your neck, back and shoulders as the middle of your body isn't supported correctly and pressure is put on your entire body making your body ache. </p>
<p>If you do sleep on your stomach and find it's the only way to sleep, a very slim pillow is recommended and consider putting a pillow under your hips to help put your spine into a more neutral alignment. </p>
<h2>CONCLUSION</h2>
<p>No matter the position you choose to sleep in, the aim when going to bed each night is to get the best nights sleep possible. Having a mattress that gives you the correct support is always essential as is having the correct pillow for your sleeping position.</p>

<p>At the end of a hectic day, cosying up to the one you love should be a welcome relief. But for those who share their bed with a “space invader”, precious hours can be lost simply trying to reclaim a fair share of the mattress.</p>
<p>Studies show that 1 in 4 of those in relationships sleep better alone. And over time, sleep loss increases the risk of injury and accidents at home, work and on the road.</p>
<p>But if separate beds don’t appeal – a phenomenon now so popular that there is a recognised trend for so-called “sleep divorces” – what next?</p>
<p>One solution could be Ford's “Lane-Keeping Bed”, that applies car tech know-how to ensuring that even the most selfish bed mate stays firmly “in their lane” through the night.</p>

<p>Available in most of Ford's vehicles, Lane-Keeping Aid is a <a href="https://fordeurope.blogspot.com/search/label/FordTech">Ford technology</a> which monitors the road markings ahead and actively supports the driver to safely guide the vehicle back into the correct lane by “nudging” the steering wheel in the correct direction; this complements other camera-based systems that help drivers avoid inadvertently straying out of their lane.</p>
<p>This technology inspired the “Lane-Keeping Bed” that uses pressure sensors to identify when someone has strayed from their side of the bed and gently returns them to where they should be with the help of an integrated conveyor belt.</p>

      <![CDATA[<p>Between horrifying hallucinations of demons and zombie-like activity, having a <strong>sleep disorder</strong> in real life can be quite scary. We’ve identified 5 sleep disorders that can rival even  the scariest of movies, with thrills and chills that will leave you questioning what really goes on when you sleep.</p>
<p>While sleep is uneventful and pleasant for most, for others it is a time of terrifying horrors or horrifying their loved ones. Read more about the scariest sleep disorders, what causes them, and possible solutions.</p>
<h2>Five Insomnia-Inducing Sleep Disorders</h2>
<p>To an onlooker, sleep disorders may look scary enough, but to the person who experiences them, it can be downright terrifying. A sleep disorder can be caused by a lack of sleep, stress, disease, and fevers. </p>
<p>There may be a genetic predisposition to some disorders such as sleepwalking, where close family members show a significantly higher risk of experiencing the same problem.</p>
<p>For other sleep disorders, scientists have not yet been able to pinpoint the etiology so causes remain unknown. Here some of the more frightening “parasomnias” that people experience.</p>
<h3>Sleepwalking</h3>
<p>Sleepwalking is often depicted as silly or funny, but in truth somnambulism can be quite dangerous, as sleepers navigate stairs, doors and even the roads in their sleep. Imagine waking up right before you crash you car, or being accused of committing a crime you have no recollection of.</p>
<p>There have been numerous cases of sleepwalkers, often aided by sleep drugs, that have done everything from cooking and eating food to murdering people, all while technically asleep. Up to 19% of somnambulists have been hurt, primarily from falls.</p>
<p>The idea that our physical bodies may take off without our conscious mental control is quite distressing and certainly scary to consider.</p>
<p><span>With 15% of adults and even more children suffering from this sleep disorder, safeguards in sleepwalkers’ homes can be imperative. Opinions vary on waking a sleepwalker, but typically modern thought is that it’s okay, with one caveat.</span></p>
<p><span>They are still deeply asleep, without social skills and may display aggressive behaviour when waking. Typical recommendations include guiding them back to bed, creating a safe environment for their nocturnal walks, locking doors and hiding keys.</span></p>
<h3>Sleep Paralysis</h3>
<p>Sleep Paralysis often accompanies sleep hallucinations and nightmares, as if they weren’t scary enough on their own, with 75% of college students in one study experiencing both simultaneously.</p>
<p>People who have experienced sleep paralysis often report feeling crushed, or an evil presence in the room. The paralysis can last anywhere from a few seconds to over an hour.</p>
<p>A common theme is feeling like an evil presence is sitting on your chest, like you are floating, or that a dark figure is approaching you. Others panic as they think they may have had a stroke or become actually paralysed.</p>
<p>Many cultures have terms and names for the experience that include ghosts or demons, and some have suggested that this condition may account for tales of alien abductions and other paranormal encounters.</p>
<p>In folklore it is called the “old hag”, other cultures may call it names like incubus, succubus, Mare and djinn.</p>
<p>Some think that the condition may be a glimpse into the paranormal world or a result of witchcraft, while science tends to theorise that it results from a disconnect between autonomous systems that keep your muscles still when you sleep.</p>
<p><strong>Sleep paralysis</strong> is most commonly associated with sleep deprivation, stress, back-sleeping, and jet lag.</p>
<p>Studies suggest about half of people will experience the sensation while waking at least once, but for about 6% of adults, sleep paralysis becomes chronic and 1/3 or more people with narcolepsy have experienced sleep paralysis as well.</p>
<p>Normalising sleep patterns are often a key to resolving episodic sleep paralysis, and some suggest trying to move fingers and toes to wake your muscles up in the event you find yourself paralysed by sleep (fear).</p>
<h3>Sleep Hallucinations</h3>
<p>Sleep Hallucinations provide fear on par with that featured in horror movies. Voices, dark shadows, bugs, visions of ghouls and fear may grasp your mind. Hypnagogic hallucinations may occur while you are falling asleep, while hypnopompic hallucinations may occur while you are waking up.</p>
<p>Phantom sensations, odd objects, and people whispering in the background are all symptoms of this scary disorder. These hallucinations can make it terrifying to fall asleep, and can contribute to insomnia.</p>
<p>Waking to your own personal scary movie also surely is not the best way to start the day. While many people have experienced the problem a handful of times, frequent occurrences may indicate underlying issues like sleep paralysis, insomnia, or narcolepsy, and should be discussed with a doctor.</p>
<h3>Night Terrors</h3>
<p>Night Terrors are similar to nightmares, but much more intense, and occur earlier in the night during non-REM sleep or during naps. While children are more likely to fall prey to night terrors, they can also occur in adults.</p>
<p>Their eyes are open and they often will sit straight up in bed and scream or yell, or even walk around while experiencing them. Upon waking, the person who experienced a night terror may lash out or be difficult to console for a few minutes, and may have an elevated heart rate or sweating.</p>
<p>Fortunately for all involved, the episodes only tend to last about 10-15 minutes and are often forgotten in the morning. <strong>Night terrors</strong> affect less than 1% of adults and 1-6% of kids, and often co-occur with sleepwalking, and in adults, with poor sleep, PTSD and anxiety disorders.</p>
<h3>Exploding Head Syndrome</h3>
<p>Exploding Head Syndrome isn’t as messy or fateful as it sounds, fortunately. However it can still be quite stressful and fear-inducing for those who experience it. According to reports, you will hear a loud explosion, bang, crack or other loud sound, and possibly see a flash of light, that wakes you from sleep, or startles you when drifting off.  The syndrome does not represent a physical danger, but can be quite distressing and cause sleep anxiety. <strong>Some studies</strong> have indicated that people may experience Exploding Head Syndrome as a physical manifestation of stress. The condition is also related to restless leg syndrome and falling sensations.</p>
<h3>Banishing Scary Sleep Disorders</h3>
<p>Scary sleep disorders can wreak havoc with rest, waking sufferers and their families up during the night, as well as making it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep. Although everyone suffers from occasional nightmares, finding methods to control chronic conditions are imperative for health and well-being.</p>
<p>If you are experiencing a sleep disorder that is affecting your life or causing you anxiety, discuss it with your doctor. Since many parasomnias are tied to poor sleep quality or a lack of sleep, maintaining <strong>good sleep hygiene</strong> can also be helpful in reducing or preventing symptoms. Some of the top sleep hygiene tips include:</p>
<ol>
<li>Develop and stick to a “sleep schedule” that allows you to get 7-8 hours in every night. Avoid deviating too much from your normal sleep-wake times on the weekends.</li>
<li>Learn stress management techniques and practice relaxing before bed. This can include a warm bath, journaling, reading a book, yoga, or other low key activity to unwind.</li>
<li>Exercise during the day for better rest at night. Studies have shown that after four months of moderate exercise, people slept up to 45 minutes longer during the night, similar to the length of time sleep aids add. It also helps diminish stress levels which have been shown to influence sleep disorders.</li>
<li>Use light blocking shades to eliminate exterior light from entering the room. Granted, <em>most</em> people do not become werewolves from a full moon, but light can disrupt sleep quality.</li>
<li>A light snack is often recommended before bed, however heavy meals should be avoided.</li>
<li>No one really wants to sleep for 20 hours every day like sufferers of Sleeping Beauty Disorder, but most people wish they had a mattress comfortable enough so they could. If your mattress is more than 8 years old or causing painful pressure points, it may no longer provide the comfort and support necessary for quality sleep.</li>
</ol>
<p>Scary sleep disorders like the ones above have been the inspiration for books, movies, and fireside tales through the ages. While it may be fun to watch a scary movie about someone who has terrifying nightmares or crippling insomnia, in real life most of us would be glad to steer clear.</p>
<p>Creating a safe and comfortable haven for rest and practising healthy sleep habits are important for many reasons, as sleep plays a role in many physical processes and in mental health.</p>
<p>While causes are complex and not entirely understood, many scary sleep disorders are linked with not getting enough rest, so it may be a smart idea to listen to the age-old advice and get a good nights’ sleep (or else… muawhahahha!).</p>]]>

      <![CDATA[<p>If you are shopping for a new mattress you may notice manufacturer and warranty recommendations regarding using mattress protectors, and you may be wondering why you should use a <strong>mattress protector</strong>. </p>
<p>Many regard these products as necessary only for children or those with incontinence, however a mattress protector’s ability to help maintain a clean bed is just one benefit.</p>
<p>They can also protect against allergens, bed bugs, dust mites and stains, in addition to extending the life of your mattress.</p>
<p>Learn more about the options and advantages that using a mattress protector provides for your home and family.</p>
<h3>WHAT IS A MATTRESS PROTECTOR?</h3>
<p>A mattress protector describes a cover or encasement that surrounds a mattress. Some slip on like fitted sheet, while others zip around. There are several different types of protectors available with different purposes in mind.</p>
<ul>
<li>
<strong>Waterproof</strong> – The designation waterproof means that no liquid should penetrate the barrier of the fabric. These types of covers offer the strongest protection, but may be less breathable. For children’s beds or if you have a reasonable chance of accidents (pets, incontinence), then you will want a waterproof cover.</li>
<li>
<strong>Water resistant</strong> – Water-resistant covers can repel a certain amount of liquid and sweat, and offer a greater degree of protection than sheets alone. Water-resistant covers are also usually fairly breathable (newer polyurethane models improve on plastic), so comfort will not be compromised. These types of covers generally offer sufficient protection for most people, but you still want to be cautious and clean up accidents quickly as liquid can get through to the mattress.</li>

<strong>Allergen-proof</strong> – Allergen-proof covers are those that block out dust mites and bed bugs from reaching the mattress. These can be invaluable for people with allergies and also prevent your mattress from getting critters.</li>
<li>
<strong>Slip-On Covers</strong> – Slip-on style covers go over the mattress like a fitted sheet, making them easy to get on and off. However, the sides and bottom of the bed are still susceptible to liquids and dust mites.</li>
<li>
<strong>Encasement</strong> – An encasement-style cover surrounds the mattress on all four sides to offer the highest level of protection. Though they can difficult to get on initially, usually these types will allow you to zip the upper portion off for washing. Allergy-proof covers are almost always encasement.</li>
<li>
<strong>Anchor</strong> – Anchor-style mattress pads and protectors are one-sided and sit on top of the bed with elastic straps that go around the corners of the mattress. These offer the least protection and are more likely to shift around.</li>
<li>
<strong>Mattress Pads</strong> – While some protectors may have padding, most foam and fibre mattress pads are not water or allergen proof. These are typically for comfort rather than protection, but can be better than nothing as they may prevent sweat and small spills from reaching the bed below.</li>

<h3>BENEFITS OF USING A MATTRESS PROTECTOR</h3>
<p>While the cost of protectors will vary, it is negligible when compared to the cost of replacing your mattress due to odours, stains or infestations.</p>
<p>It may be worth trying to negotiate a free mattress protector when purchasing a new mattress. Many companies are willing to add them to new purchases free of charge in order to get your business.</p>
<p>Using a protector consistently on a new mattress is the best way to protect your investment, health, and extend the life of your bed.</p>
<h3>PREVENT STAINS</h3>
<p>Mattress stains and odours from liquids (beverages or foods) and body fluids including urine, blood and vomit are nearly impossible to remove due to the closed nature of most beds, including inner springs and foam.  Anyone who has children, pets or incontinence issues should definitely consider purchasing a mattress protector to eliminate the risks of accidents. Most mattress protectors are easy to clean in home washer and dryers and will protect the exterior and interior of the underlying mattress.</p>
<p>Even if you are careful about liquids in bed, everyone sweats at night and this can make its way into your mattress. Memory foam and <strong>latex mattresses</strong> which are not protected will absorb a great deal of moisture, similar to a sponge, and may take days to completely dry. Inner springs also hold moisture and can harbour mold and mildew in the interior causing allergies. All of these are easily preventable by simply using a mattress cover.</p>
<h3>EXTEND LIFESPAN OF BED</h3>
<p>In addition to cosmetic damage, many foams and fibres can also be damaged by liquids and cleaning solvents which can affect the lifespan of the bed. The materials can be compressed and less resilient, affecting comfort. Side effects like allergens, mold and odours can also necessitate the replacement of a mattress. Using a protector will keep your investment fresh as long as possible and save you money over time.</p>
<h3>ALLERGENS</h3>
<p>Dust mites are a primary cause of household allergies and can be found throughout the home, but particularly in mattresses.</p>
<p>They feast on skin cells and their faeces and remains get trapped in mattresses, exacerbating symptoms for allergic individuals.</p>
<p>A dust-mite proof cover prevents infestations and can be washed regularly to reduce allergens.</p>

<p>Even if you think you love your new bed, use a mattress protector at least until the trial period is over so you can return it if needed.</p>
<p>Cigarette and pet odors, water stains, sweat, and bodily fluids can all negate your return, and can all be prevented with a protector.</p>
<h3>CHOOSING A MATTRESS PROTECTOR</h3>
<p>Older types of mattress protectors were often nothing more than a plastic or rubbery cover that was uncomfortable, noisy and did not allow for airflow.</p>
<p>Today alternatives with more advanced  barriers like polyurethane prevent fluids from leaking through, while still allowing some airflow to eliminate the issue of  hot sleeping.</p>
<p>Shop around to find a model that meets your needs and consider the following:</p>
<ol>
<li>Is it moisture-<em>proof</em> or moisture-<em>resistant</em>?</li>
<li>Is the material quiet?</li>
<li>If you tend to sleep warm, is the material breathable?</li>
<li>If dust allergies or bed bugs are in issue, does it specifically provide protection?</li>
<li>Can it be laundered at home in the washer and dryer or must it be dry-cleaned?</li>
<li>Can it be washed in very hot water for sterilisation?</li>
<li>Through how many washes is it certified for or guaranteed to last?</li>
<li>Can it stretch to accommodate the depth of your mattress when you are sleeping on it, using a 4-way stretch? This is especially important for foam mattresses.</li>
<li>Some mattress protectors are classified as Class 1 medical devices. If this is important to you, for allergies or another reason, check for this classification.</li>
