Vnunet has an article about how Domino's is making use of technology to increase their delivery business. It appears to be working for them.

Online sales now represent nearly a quarter of all home pizza delivery sales, with a 74 per cent increase in web revenue during 2008. And the company is gearing up to support an unprecedented surge in customers looking to spend less to eat out.

I've only ever tried to order pizza online one time and just ended up calling the place (not Domino's) because it seemed easier. The Domino's system seems pretty cool in comparison though. No matter where you are in the world, you can go to their one unified web site, input your address, and they'll let you know if they have a shop that can deliver to you. That's nice to know up front. I'm still not likely to use it just because I'm not likely to order a Domino's pizza, but still, it's kind of cool.

Pizza Ingredients Getting More Expensive

Pizza has always been a great cheap eat but that may soon be changing.

Pizza shops and other places that use a lot of flour may have to hike prices, because they have to pay more for the supplies.

At Mi Piace in Wescosville, Pennsylvania pizza dough isn’t the only thing rising...so are prices.

“They’re getting a little bit out of hand,” shop owner Jerry Copolla said.

Copolla is talking about flour prices, which in the last few weeks have shot through the roof, going from $15 a bag to more than double that.

Copolla said he is paying $600 a week or more and must now pass part of the cost onto his customers.

“All the pizza rolls, all the garlic knots, the bread, all of that accounts for your flour,” Copolla said.

Mi Piace uses 25 bags of flour a week, about a ton a month.

If that’s not enough, the price of other key ingredients like cheese and tomatoes is going up, as well.

The rise in flour prices is due in part because farmers are replacing wheat fields with corn to meet the demand for alternative fuel.

Coppola has tried to suck it up but said the increase is eating up profits so he’s cutting back on the complimentary dinner rolls and charging $1 more for a large pie.

“It makes it difficult on small shop owners. We are not a chain, as you can see,” he said.

“It’s very tough. I don’t know what to do,” Riccardo Alaimo, a baker, said.

Down the road, La Dolce Vita Bakery has raised prices of its butter cookies, danishes and loaves of breads.

While customers aren’t happy about it, many seem understanding.

“For a good loaf of bread, yes, I would pay more at a bakery but at a supermarket probably not,” Linda Bowers, of Trexlertown, said.
