• An auto scan button has been added to the 9000F that enables you to bring eight steps into one when you scan your documents.
• The time it takes to scan film and slides has also been reduced again, with it taking about 18 seconds to pre-scan a slide and 41 seconds to scan it at 2400 DPI.
• The Power Supply has been fully integrated into the 9000F, doing away with the inline brick that was present on the 8800F.
• A newly designed super toric lens has been added to the 9900F to improve accuracy at temperature change.

As you can see a number of items have been added and the speed of the machine has been increased.  Both of these items make this machine a great buy, but if you are on a tight budget and the above differences don’t mean all that much to you, then the 8800F would be a good choice since it is about $50.00 cheaper.  Otherwise go for the newer technology and the longer useful life span of the 9000F.

The scanning of all your old slides, negatives and maybe photos is going to be a major investment of time and effort. Here are some simple tips to help you get it right the first time or at least shorten the learning curve. Since it is impossible to know exactly what type of equipment you are using this info. will be general in nature, but should common to most of the equipment out there.

1. Choose the correct file format. The purists out there will say that TIFF is the way to go here, due to achievability, editing and quality offered. TIFF’s are not subject to the compression loss that is experienced by JPG’s. That being said though a TIFF file can easily be 10 times the size of a JPG Thereby causing a storage problem. For most people the JPG format should produce sufficient image quality.
2. Choose the proper resolution. The scanning of most photos can be accomplished using a resolution of 300 dpi if you are just looking to post to the web or make small prints. My personal suggestion is to scan all photos at 600 dpi. Why? Because you can always dumb down a 600 dpi image down later in you have space problems. On the other hand if you scan at 300 dpi and later you need higher resolution you are out of luck short of a total rescan.

As for negatives and slides they have a whole lot more going on and require higher resolutions to produce good results. Resolution for slide and negative scanning should be set between 2,400 and 3,000 dpi depending on your machine. If you decide to go higher just remember that you may be magnifying things that you don’t want to see, such as dust.

1. Use your machines pre-sets. If they exist you can use them to save time in correcting for a number of illnesses, such as old discolored film, removing scratches, and cropping to exact size. Cropping should also be used to eliminate any white background prior to the final scan; this will help keep the auto brightness function from over compensating and causing poor image quality.
2. Consider your file naming. While it may be faster and easier to name your images 01-01-2010.jpg it will do very little to clue you in on the content. Imagine having to find that killer image of Grandpa getting a pie in the face from Grandma when your naming convention is based on date and you have 2,000 images to look through. In other words make the images name meaningful, I can guarantee you that at some point it will save you a ton of time.
3. Back up everything!!!! It will do you no good to spend hours and hours converting slides, negatives and photos to digital only to have smoke come pouring out of your hard drive 2 days later. A fried hard drive is normally no fun, but if you lose the family’s entire photo history it can be a downright nightmare. Invest in blank DVD’s, Flash Chips or online backup; you’ll be glad you did.
