The Kapex miter lock is engaged and released by flipping the end of the miter handle up or down, providing a very secure hold to prevent unintentional slippage even when close to a detent, giving you confidence that the angle selected is exact.

The KS 120 provides on-board cord & tool storage which keeps the cord under control, preventing damage and tripping accidents, while the arbor tool is kept handy for blade changes. What Are The Cons?

You would think that a saw this expensive and well designed would have no real issues, but of course that’s not the case, and one of the biggest issues is price itself. Some owners feel it is grossly overpriced for the value received, others feel it’s well worth every dollar spent. Obviously, most owners feel it to be worth the money or they wouldn’t have purchased, so it’s a biased set of opinions. Hopefully, you find enough useful information here to make the right decision for yourself, whatever that may be.

Another sore point is the manual – there is an original and supplemental – that many users feel could be much better. First time miter saw buyers are not likely to buy this saw, but with the numerous features to figure out, a better manual would help even pros get up to speed quicker.

Some users felt the limited selection of the non-standard 10-1/4"(260mm) blades and 1-3/16"(30mm) arbor hole, as well as the premium price of Festool’s blades was a drawback. However, many felt the Festool blades and those from other manufacturers provided sufficient selection, excellent results, and were worth the premium price. Although more manufacturers are making blades in this size (Forrest has a new 260mm x 90 tooth CHOPMASTER available), you can’t expect to just select one in any configuration from your favorite manufacturer.

When cutting more extreme bevels(30+ degrees), the rails contact the fence, which needs to be moved out of the way or removed completely. The Allen wrench required to remove the retaining screw that keeps the fence from coming off (not the latch that allows the fence to slide) does not have an on-board storage spot.

Power tool safety in general is a matter of habit. You won’t always be thinking about safety with your head full of the details of your current project, so if you get in the habit of always practicing safety those habits should take over even when your mind is elsewhere. Accidents are by definition “unintended,” and good safety habits are just a way of putting the odds on your side when the unintended comes your way. Being safe around a miter saw is mostly common sense and fairly simple – you just have to actually do it to get the benefit.

Set Up Your Miter Saw For Safety Before You Start Cutting

• Be familiar with the operation of the miter saw and all its features and controls before you use it so you know what you can and can’t do with the saw. Keep the saw lubricated and make sure the blade is sharp and in good shape.
• Wear safety gear in the form of goggles and some sort of hearing protection. Make sure you have no loose clothing that could flap and get caught in a moving blade.
• The saw should be mounted on a stand/bench or at least placed on a stable surface. Having the saw at a comfortable working height prevents user fatigue. If you put it on a bench, clamp it down securely. Otherwise, if the blade binds up everything could suddenly move.
• For long stock, make sure it’s supported securely. People make poor substitutes for extensions, since they can move and cause the piece to bind on the blade, which now puts two people at risk.
• Before using the saw, give it a quick once-over to make sure nothing is damaged, missing, unfastened, or that a piece of stock, adjustment key, wrench, or other tool is laying somewhere it shouldn’t be. Clear away sawdust that could interfere with alignment of the workpiece or prevent proper movement and function of the saw. Clear clogged air vents on the motor. Check to see that the saw pivots and slides easily through its entire range.
• As long as the miter saw has power going to it, there is the possibility for the motor to start. Unplug the saw when putting your hands near the blade. Even coming in contact with the blade for half a revolution can do major damage to your hands. Always unplug it when changing blades, moving it, or when it’s not in use. If any part of the electrical system, such as the trigger, doesn’t seem to work correctly, stop and fix it. It could engage just at the wrong moment.
• Use accessories that are either designed for your model saw, or that obviously match the threads, slots, whatever. Jury rigging a support, stop, hold-down, or whatever is not a good idea, but if you feel the need at least make sure it’s solid, and won’t move or bind up during and at the completion of the cut. Actually, don’t jury rig anything – the manufacturer spend good money engineering an accessory to work safely and correctly.
• Make sure the workpiece is free of foreign matter (e.g. nails) that could be embedded in it.
• If the piece is bowed or warped, place the outside of the bow against the fence, so it’s supported and won’t move and bind on the blade as the cut is being made. There should be no gap between the workpiece and either the fence or the table along the line of the cut. Do not cut stock that is so warped or twisted that it can’t be supported correctly. Round stock should be supported so that it can’t roll with the friction of the blade being applied. If you’re halfway through the round stock and it rolls, suddenly the stock is pressed into the blade, causing it to bite, quickly jerking the head out of your control.
• Cut only materials listed in your owner’s manual. Miter saws are intended for wood, wood products, and maybe NON-ferrous metals – using a blade meant for that particular material.
• As you make adjustments for various cuts, pay attention to where the blade will pass through the fence and make sure (mainly with bevel cuts) that neither the motor housing or blade will actually contact the fence. The Milwaukee 6955-20 requires the right fence to be removed when making a deep right bevel because of interference with the motor housing.

Safety While Using Your Miter Saw

• Keep your fingers away from the blade when setting up a cut. Six inches is a good minimum distance, and some saws have marks to identify a “danger zone.” There is no reason to get closer. If the piece you’re cutting is small, it should be cut from a longer piece, or clamped so your fingers are well out of the way during the cut. Clamps are an excellent way to positively secure your workpiece, whereas holding the work against the fence by hand may allow it to slip, causing the blade to bind with unintended consequences.
• Distractions are everywhere. You need to focus on the cut you’re making and where your hands when the blade is spinning. Pretty much everything else can wait the few seconds it takes to finish a cut and have the blade come to a stop.
• Adjust and secure your fence for the cut you want to make.
• Don’t hold your work cross handed. If it’s your left hand, keep it on the left side of the saw blade.
• Don’t reach under the blade when it’s moving. Uh huh. Just saying…
• Allow the blade to reach full RPM before cutting. You may have to wait a second longer when your saw has the “soft start” feature.
• Slowly and evenly feed the blade into the stock. Not only is it safer, but you’ll get a smoother cut with less chance of chipping.
• When making a sliding cut, first pull the saw head away from the fence before starting the saw, then lower it in an even motion down to the table (right through the workpiece if it’s too long to get the saw blade past it) and push the blade back through the stock. Allow the blade to come to a full stop before raising the saw head assembly. Under no circumstances do you want to pull the blade toward you to make the cut. The blade’s rotation could allow it to climb over the stock and slam the saw head back at you.
• To make a non-sliding “chop” cut on a sliding miter saw, slide the head fully to the rear and lock the head in place on the rails. This prevents any unwanted movement of the saw head assembly during the cut. Some saws have a special lock that puts the head in the correct position to get the greatest vertical capacity, such as the DEWALT DW717. From the up position, turn the on and evenly lower the blade through the stock to the table. Allow the blade to come to a complete stop before raising the head.
• If the saw becomes bogged down or begins to jam, release the trigger and let the saw come to a full stop. Then unplug the saw before you attempt to correct the problem or free the blade. Hold the saw steady as you release the trigger, since the braking action of the motor or electric brake will cause the saw to want to bite down further into the stock. That goes for any time you stop the saw before a cut is complete and the head is full down through the stock.
• Using even pressure and allowing the blade to do the work without you forcing it through the stock will keep problems to a minimum, and create smoother cuts.
• When cutting pieces near the maximum height capacity of the saw, the saw head may not lower enough to raise blade guard before starting the cut. In that case you will have to manually raise the blade guard with your free hand, which requires the workpiece be clamped. Don’t even think about holding the piece in place with a few fingers while using your forefinger to raise the guard.
• Remember – Common sense is absolutely invaluable!

Model specifications can be found on manufacturer’s web sites for quick comparison, which is especially useful if you are concerned about a particular cut that the 10" model might not handle. The DEWALT DW717 for example, has tremendous vertical and horizontal capacity for a 10" slider, and is worth considering if you’re looking for greater capacity while retaining the size / weight / accuracy advantages of a 10" miter saw.
   1. Would it be even better to go smaller than 10" to 7-1/2"? Depending on your intended use, something like the Makita LS0714 7-1/2-Inch Single Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw might be the ticket. 2. Would the convenience and speed of being able to cut bevels both left and right without flipping the stock be worth the added cost of the dual bevel feature? Angle cuts usually mean a complementary cut on the opposite end of the same piece and the adjoining piece, requiring the angles to be reset for each cut. Complex or nonstandard angles make the constant resetting particularly tedious and time consuming.
3. If you plan on transporting the saw, possibly to use at a vacation property, cottage, rental, etc., then the physical size and weight of the saw might be a factor. The ever-increasing number of woman do-it-yourselfers should consider that while even 10” models can vary by ten pounds, while 12” models can weight an additional 20 pounds. It’s much easier to handle a 45 lb. saw, as opposed to one weighing 65 lbs. Some models are specifically engineered to be light and compact.
4. Miter saw blades need to be chosen carefully as well, not only in regard to the material being cut, but given that a sliding saw can actually walk up a piece of stock, the blade “hook angle” should be kept to a very small positive angle at most, with a neutral or negative hook angle affording even greater control. If you plan on doing remodeling as well as woodworking you’ll want to consider having one blade for rough cuts and one for fine work. 10. Will the accessories and special features available for a particular model or brand of saw suit your needs? Milwaukee, for example decided to forego a laser on the Milwaukee 6955-20 in favor of dual work lights because lasers go out of alignment, and doesn’t include extension rails because it determined its target market of professionals mounts the saw on a stand. Watch for particular fence configurations as well. Some fences are tall for cutting crown molding, others slide on one side but not the other, some are removable for greater capacity. Checking out the additional accessories available will help you figure just how far you can expand on a saw’s uses and capacity. You may not be a pro, but those specific features could be one of the deciding factors in choosing a saw.

These considerations should help direct you to a saw that best suits your needs. Getting features that cost more now but at the same time increase a saw’s future usefulness, or help avoid an “upgrade” purchase down the road could be considered as economical as avoiding features that provide no benefit. Vertical cut capacities are also impressive. The DW717 is a real workhorse, driven by a powerful 15 AMP motor, with lightweight ergonomic design, cam lock miter handle, tall sliding fence system, 7 bevel and 11 miter detents, in addition to it’s durability and ease-of-use.

DEWALT DW717 Features

The DW717 is equipped with an array of useful features both large and small, and it’s those little extras that make it a standout. An electronic brake, adjustable stainless steel miter detent plate, sliding fences both left and right, and accessories that extend productivity all make the operator’s life easier.

DW717 Power, Durability, Ease-Of-Use

Dust Collection

Dust collection on this DEWALT miter saw is not what it could be, according to user reviews. It was pointed out that when the saw head is lowered during a cut, the dust collection tube is pointing north of 45 degrees, making collection with a dust bag difficult. Most users who employed a shop vac or other vacuum system felt they had no great problem with dust collection.

What Are The Cons?

Dust collection, as noted above, was the major complaint. If you are able to use a shop vac or other dust collection system, or you use the saw outside, this becomes much less of a factor. Some users found the stock blade to be poor quality, others not. The difference could be a change in the quality of stock miter saw blades over the years, or just different uses – framing versus woodworking. A very few minor complaints ranged from difficulty getting at the blade guard screws to change the blade, to wishing the table were a bit larger.

Makita LS0714 Features

Unless you absolutely need the greater capacity of a larger miter saw, Makita’s LS0714 will take whatever you throw at it with no problem. Users report that it performs flawlessly whether you’re cutting pressure treated lumber or dense hardwood, with plenty of power for any job. Accurate right out of the box, the LS0714 is able to handle 2" x 12" lumber at 0° miter / 0°bevel, and 2" x 8" at 45° miter / 0° bevel. REALLY Good Dust Collection

Dust collection on miter saws is usually questionable, with a 50-75% capture rate being very acceptable. Smooth, Powerful Motor With Easy Starts, Quick Stops

The powerhouse 15 AMP, 3.3 HP motor uses Constant Power Technology (thru an Electronic Feedback Control Circuit) to maintain constant blade speed (3,250 RPM) and torque between load and no-load conditions. This results in smooth, clean, fast cuts even in hardwood. The electronic soft start takes less than two seconds to bring the blade up to speed, while an electronic brake shuts it down about four to five seconds after the trigger is released.

The Milwaukee 6955-20 Effectively Channels Dust Collection

An integral dust channel maximizes airflow to capture dust near the blade and direct it back through an elbow to the dust bag. Milwaukee claims a 75% "Best Dust Collection in the Industry!" dust collection rate. Some users agree and some say it’s more like 50%, but most agree that "Compared to any other miter saw out there, it does excellent!"

Of course hooking up some sort of dust collection system will improve performance, but the 6955-20’s collection tube is rectangular and requires an adapter to attach to a round vac hose. The large red single lever bevel adjustment is easy to use and has three positions:

Unlike most manufacturers, Milwaukee does not list any particular accessories for the 6955-20 on it’s website, such as optional fences, supports, stands, etc. However, there are three accessories that I can enthusiastically recommend: The Milwaukee 48-03-0200 Vacuum Attachment for Miter Saws: 6950-20 and 6955-20 that I found through a user’s review (which actually seems more like rectifying an oversight than an accessory to expand the saw’s use), the BOSCH MS1226 Vertical Quick Clamp which apparently fits the 6955-20 like it was designed for it, and the Bosch T4B Gravity-Rise Miter Saw Stand which is a fine piece of equipment that also fits the 6955-20 perfectly. These three accessories are mentioned elsewhere on the page, but I thought it would be a good idea to put them all in one place.

What Are The Cons?

There were some issues with the digital miter readout, which can occasionally give an imprecise reading, but users pointed out that it’s easily solved by moving the handle to a miter detent to re-calibrate, as directed in the owner’s manual (which users said to be well written, including crown molding angle charts).

Users complained that there was no hold down clamp supplied. One reviewer said they bought a Bosch Quick-clamp that fit on the back of the fence like it was original equipment.

NOTE on hold down clamp: As of this writing, according to user reviews, Milwaukee does not make a clamp that works with the tall fence on this saw, saying the saw was designed to work without a clamp. However, the BOSCH MS1226 Vertical Quick Clamp apparently fits very well into the pre-drilled holes behind the Milwaukee 6955-20 fence and works perfectly.

Complaints about the fences centered on the left fence sliding when the right one does not, and that when a deep right bevel is dialed in, the motor housing gets in the way, so the right fence must be removed.

Some users felt the saw was a bit pricey, but still well worth the investment for the features and quality if you can afford it.

There is a general resignation among users to the fact that this is a large, heavy saw and therefore difficult to haul around. Most felt that a miter saw stand was the best solution for stability, safety, and reasonable portability.

Yes, it scrolls off the page… I considered a number of different options, but that seemed the most useful and user friendly. Model numbers are included at the top, middle, and bottom of the columns so you can easily see which saw’s information you’re viewing. (If you have a tilt-wheel mouse you can scroll horizontally without using the scrollbar just by pushing left or right on the wheel. Not much call for it, so you might not even realize your mouse has the feature.)
