Only a passionate woodworker will be able to fully grasp the continuing preoccupation of another devoted woodworker in seeking to enhance the efficiency of their woodworking shop. Those that can, expand their shop as they advance in ability and as additional woodworking tools and machines are acquired. It’s really best for a woodworker to establish the type and extent of woodworking to be performed from the outset to be in a position to make an accurate estimation of space required. This assists in projecting the amount of space necessary for the future, thus avoiding potentially costly expansions and design changes. The objective at all times when designing, constructing, expanding or setting up your workspace is efficiency, cost effectiveness and safety.

Avid woodworkers have likely have seen numerous shops on the internet or in books and magazines and ought to have some basic concepts and designs in mind. There is certainly little question that a terrific number of enthusiasts are dreaming about getting massive spaces dedicated to woodworking on some wooded lands along with a view of the great outdoors. Unfortunately, that’s not really feasible for the majority of hobbyists needing to hold a job in the city. As a result they compensate by designing a more modest work shop to fit the circumstances. So, rather than waste time on dreaming an impossible dream, you should make the very best of the resources you have to establish a space for your woodworking shop.

Planning Is The Key To Creating The Best Possible Work Area

You will find unlimited approaches to make a smaller shop perform like any functional woodworking shop. Start off with some well-considered planning. First, it’s essential to determine what sort of woodworking you would like to pursue. Would you like to work on large or small projects? This can be crucial since the kind of tools, machinery and work surface you’ll need depends on the size of the projects you plan to tackle. Your projects additionally determine kind of woodwork machinery that you require in the process. In this connection, consider how much space you’ll need to make room for all of your intended acquisitions. If the available space in the house is small, you’ll need to develop some imaginative solutions to overcome the space issue. On the other hand, you can give some thought to renting out a vacant or unused building space in your neighborhood. At the same time, instead of acquiring large stationary machines, try to find alternative portable counterparts, particularly if they won’t be central to the intended type of woodworking being pursued.

Get Your Design Down On Paper

Moving heavy, bulky machines and fixtures around to try establishing an optimum layout is an exercise in frustration, so before you lift a finger, make a scaled layout on graph paper(or a computer program if that’s easier), then measure your bigger tools, and create scale cutouts you can shuffle around you layout drawing. Take some time to move them around to find the optimum arrangement, keeping in mind things like infeed and outfeed clearances, as well as limitations on the maximum size pieces any particular layout will accommodate. Workflow is another consideration, but in a small shop that may not be much of a consideration. Making workbenches and cabinets a height that will allow them to double as supports for feeding stock to your larger machines allows them to do double duty. Consider using the door to your shop as a possible outfeed to handle long or large stock, increasing the capacity of any particular machine you may feel needs the extra room.

Since you don’t need access to all your smaller power tools at once, allot storage space to them and bring them out on the workbench only when they are needed, freeing a great deal of work surface. Another consideration is employing a folding workbench and work supports, which take up little extra space when not in use. Of course, putting your woodworking machines on rolling bases will allow considerable flexibility in your shop layout, as long as you can lock the machines down during use. In a one man shop, it’s likely that only one or two machines need be set up at any one time. Think twice about buying a large machine that is seldom used (But nice to have, thus the temptation!), with a more practical approach being to get a scaled down or portable version.

Well Thought Out Storage Increases Your Space

There are many flexible storage systems available commercially, but you ARE in woodworking, so why not build your own custom storage cabinets that meet your particular needs, and your space and layout requirements. Create custom tool holders to accommodate your tools, and make use of all nooks and crannies to maximize storage and essentially expand your shop. As an added bonus, it will look pretty cool to your friends to see all the custom work, giving your reputation a boost. Remember that stationary tools with open stands are another opportunity for additional free storage space.

Some other important considerations for your woodworking shop are effective lighting, handy electrical outlets, and well placed safety devices like vent hoods and vacuum hoses. In all your efforts to design a practical, useful shop that maximizes space, always keep an eye to safety precautions which will keep you productive for the long run.

Are you searching for the “ultimate” sliding compound miter saw? A miter saw where virtually all of the little features, tweaks, and design elements that enhance the user experience have been taken into consideration, and price is no object? You’re destination is the Festool Kapex KS 120 Sliding Compound Miter Saw. It was developed with the single minded goal of being the best sliding compound miter saw. Period. Game over.

Kapex KS 120 Features

Festool’s claim that the Kapex KS 120 is the most advanced sliding compound miter saw on the market today translates into a wealth of benefits: large cutting capacity, light weight rock solid design, small footprint, superb accuracy and exacting alignment, convenient ergonomic controls, excellent dust extraction, innovative advanced electronic motor control, and proprietary features that contribute to ease of use and convenience. An example of the degree of thought that went into this saw is that when you see something colored green, you know it’s a functional feature. Ever owned something for a period of time and had someone refer to a feature you didn’t even know existed? This way you’ll at least be aware that the green “dohickey” does SOMEthing…

Advanced Design Elements

The KS 120’s rail forward design with stationary rails and a sliding head creates a small footprint and allows the the Kapex to be placed up against a wall, in addition to facilitating storage and transport. Stability is achieved through two large 1-3/16" (30mm) diameter widely spaced rails, minimizing saw head play/deflection. The durable magnesium-alloy honeycomb design base of the Kapex is extremely rigid while remaining very lightweight (47 lbs.) compared to other 10" miter saws.

An ergonomically designed carrying position, combining two handle locations with the ability to lock the saw head into a compact stationary position, keeps the KS 120’s center of gravity close to your body, minimizing back strain and making it easy to move around the work site.

Smart Powerful Electronics

Festool’s unique MMC (Multiple Material Control) Electronics provides not just constant blade speed under load, but also variable speed control, which you can dial in just above the trigger, using the quick reference chart on the side of the head to select the appropriate speed based on your application. Constant blade speed combined with the right overall speed for your material delivers cleaner, more accurate cuts. MMC Electronics also provide soft start and magnetic brake features, as well as thermal/overload protection for the 1,600 Watt, 13 AMP Direct Drive Motor. The variable speed feature is mainly useful for materials other than wood.

Kapex KS 120 – Extreme Accuracy / Fast Alignment

Dual lasers are on many people’s miter saw wish list, and the Kapex really delivers, adding three-axis adjustment controls to allow you to fine tune the lasers, a convenient button to turn them on without powering up the saw, and wiring them into the saw’s electrical, requiring no batteries.

The etched stainless steel miter scale is large, easy to read, and positioned far from the axis of rotation, which makes setting up those fine fraction-of-a-degree cuts precise and easy. The miter scale has a range of 50 degrees to the left and 60 degrees to the right, with detents at common angles.

The bevel scale is also large, easy to read, and located far from the rotational axis to maximize accuracy. A counter balance spring mechanism keeps the head in place during alignment even while the bevel is unlocked making angle adjustment more accurate, while the bevel micro-adjustment knob dials in accurate angles to a fraction of a degree.

A MiterFast Angle Transfer Device is included with the KS 120, and makes transferring inside and outside angles from the workpiece to your saw fast and easy, letting you avoid complex angle calculations. A secure locking mechanism prevents slipping. The reflective surface of the MiterFast works together with the saw’s dual lasers for easy angle transfers. Users found the MiterFast to be especially useful in renovations when dealing with existing walls that were out of square.

Contributing to the Kapex’s accuracy are the sturdy 1-3/16"(30mm) diameter, widely spaced slide rails, and the large 1-3/16"(30mm) arbor for reduced blade wobble and deflection.

User Friendly Controls

The Kapex’s vertical, center-positioned handle works equally well with either hand, and keeps feed pressure directly in line with the blade to minimize head deflection. A two stage trigger allows the head to move and the blade guard to be raised at the first stage and triggers power at the second stage when the safety button is also depressed.

The Kapex miter lock is engaged and released by flipping the end of the miter handle up or down, providing a very secure hold to prevent unintentional slippage even when close to a detent, giving you confidence that the angle selected is exact.

The large bevel lock knob is conveniently located on top of the KS 120, and provides three settings: positive detent at 0 and swings 45 degrees left, free movement between -45 & +45 degrees, and free movement between -47 & +47 degrees. Bevel can be set left and right with bevel scales on both sides.

The bevel fine-adjustment knob is on the end of the right rail, employing rack and pinion precision to allow you to dial in bevel angles to fractions of a degree. The counter spring balanced head will stay in place during adjustments even before you lock it down.

Dust Collection: Near Perfection With The Right Equipment

The Kapex miter saw’s 91 percent dust collection ability starts with the clear, narrow blade guard which is designed to improve dust extraction efficiency and provide excellent visibility. The pliable rubber dust hood then directs chips directly into the extraction port, which features a swivel design for convenient positioning of the dust extraction hose. Although the extraction port accepts both 27mm and 36mm hoses, the 91 percent dust collection rate is achieved only when using the 36mm hose and a Festool CT 22 or Ct 33 Dust Extractor. Owner reviews indicated that there is a significant increase in dust collection when using the 36mm hose. One owner’s close observation of Festool training materials led to the conclusion that a shorter hose between the saw and Extractor also increases collection efficiency.

Blade Features / FastFix Blade Changing System

Festool Kapex blades are designed to create a thin kerf, reducing motor load and improving cut quality, as well as dampening vibration and reducing noise levels. User reviews indicate that the Kapex really is noticeably quieter than other sliders they had used. The large 1-3/16" (30mm) arbor hole means the blade is supported farther out from it center, reducing blade deflection.

Changing blades is quick and easy with Festool’s patented FastFix blade changing system, where turning the FastFix knob locks the arbor and mechanically locks the trigger, allowing single handed blade changes. To prevent damage to the saw and blade a cupped steel arbor nut prevents accidental over torquing. The arbor tool is stored on-board for easy access.

Large Capacity / Dado Capability

The Kapex KS 120 features a special cutting position that can be locked in with the flip of a lever when needed to provide greater than usual vertical capacity by more effective use of the back part of the blade. Cut nested crown molding up to 6-5/8" and material vertically up to 4-3/4" x 3/4". Owners commented that the Kapex was like a 10" saw with nearly the capacity of a 12".

The Kapex also provides a unique, accurate trenching / dado capability. Flip a conveniently located knob to lock the head in place, then turn the knob to adjust the depth of the cut.

Miter / Bevel Maximum Capacities

Millimeters are exact – Inches are to nearest fraction of 32nds

At 0° Miter /0° Bevel: 3-15/32" x 12" (88 x 305mm)

Convenient Storage And Other Practical Features

The KS 120 provides on-board cord & tool storage which keeps the cord under control, preventing damage and tripping accidents, while the arbor tool is kept handy for blade changes. Even the MiterFast angle finder has its own cubbyhole in the base. Overall, the storage features create a neater package for transport and storage.

Included with the Kapex is a keyed, non-slip clamp designed for quick, easy application and removal. Employing a single lever-actuated cam-lock to secure the clamp in position, the head will not slide down and interfere with the positioning of your stock when the lock is disengaged. The oblong, rubber padded foot is shaped with a flat surface that can be aligned right up against the fence.

Even the deck height of Festool’s Kapex was taken into consideration, designed to match the height of their Systainer 1 storage system, allowing the saw to be used on the floor or deck while the Systainers support long workpieces. Additionally, the height difference between the MFT/3 and MFT/3-Kapex multifunction tables has the MFT/3-Kapex shorter, so the MFT/3 matches the deck height of the saw and can be used outboard to support long stock.

What Are The Cons?

You would think that a saw this expensive and well designed would have no real issues, but of course that’s not the case, and one of the biggest issues is price itself. Some owners feel it is grossly overpriced for the value received, others feel it’s well worth every dollar spent. Obviously, most owners feel it to be worth the money or they wouldn’t have purchased, so it’s a biased set of opinions. Hopefully, you find enough useful information here to make the right decision for yourself, whatever that may be.

Another sore point is the manual – there is an original and supplemental – that many users feel could be much better. First time miter saw buyers are not likely to buy this saw, but with the numerous features to figure out, a better manual would help even pros get up to speed quicker.

Some users felt the limited selection of the non-standard 10-1/4"(260mm) blades and 1-3/16"(30mm) arbor hole, as well as the premium price of Festool’s blades was a drawback. However, many felt the Festool blades and those from other manufacturers provided sufficient selection, excellent results, and were worth the premium price. Although more manufacturers are making blades in this size (Forrest has a new 260mm x 90 tooth CHOPMASTER available), you can’t expect to just select one in any configuration from your favorite manufacturer.

Working the two position safety trigger and the safety button takes some getting used to for many people. Not a deal breaker, but not the normally expected operation either.

Users generally agreed that the 36mm dust collection hose works far better than the 27mm, but some balked at the (approx.) $135 price for the larger diameter hose.

When cutting more extreme bevels(30+ degrees), the rails contact the fence, which needs to be moved out of the way or removed completely. The Allen wrench required to remove the retaining screw that keeps the fence from coming off (not the latch that allows the fence to slide) does not have an on-board storage spot.

Actually, it’s not really “us,” but rather “me.” I’m Mark*, and my goal here is to bring you accurate, unbiased, thoroughly researched reviews on miter saws, hopefully providing you with a “one stop” research/shopping guide for the saws I cover.

Since (as I stated on the home page) it would be pointless to write in-depth reviews on less than adequate tools, I do tend to be enthusiastic about the saws I review, which are all high quality products from leading name brand manufacturers.

However, each saw has its strong and weak points, limitations, advantages, and exclusive features, as well as minor idiosyncrasies that may be a plus or minus for you, which are the types of things I want to bring to your attention.

Additionally, I’m working on the premise that summarizing input (user reviews) from many individuals who have a range of experience, experiences, expectations, and applications will provide you with not only a well rounded overall view of a saw, but occasionally find those little not-so-obvious characteristics that might sway your buying decision one way or the other.

You should be aware that I get a small commission from the merchants with listings on my site when you buy though one of my links. This has absolutely no effect on the price you pay. If you want more information, please consult my Affiliate Disclaimer which can also be found through a link in the site footer.

I hope this site is of some help to you.

Thanks again for stopping by!

LEGAL NOTE: This material is for general information purposes only. The safety directions and advice in your owner’s manual or other manufacturer’s literature supersedes anything presented here. I am not a professional safety expert and assume no liability for any damage incurred during the use of your saw.

Power tool safety in general is a matter of habit. You won’t always be thinking about safety with your head full of the details of your current project, so if you get in the habit of always practicing safety those habits should take over even when your mind is elsewhere. Accidents are by definition “unintended,” and good safety habits are just a way of putting the odds on your side when the unintended comes your way. Being safe around a miter saw is mostly common sense and fairly simple – you just have to actually do it to get the benefit.

Set Up Your Miter Saw For Safety Before You Start Cutting

Be familiar with the operation of the miter saw and all its features and controls before you use it so you know what you can and can’t do with the saw. Keep the saw lubricated and make sure the blade is sharp and in good shape.

Wear safety gear in the form of goggles and some sort of hearing protection. Make sure you have no loose clothing that could flap and get caught in a moving blade.

The saw should be mounted on a stand/bench or at least placed on a stable surface. Having the saw at a comfortable working height prevents user fatigue. If you put it on a bench, clamp it down securely. Otherwise, if the blade binds up everything could suddenly move.

For long stock, make sure it’s supported securely. People make poor substitutes for extensions, since they can move and cause the piece to bind on the blade, which now puts two people at risk.

Before using the saw, give it a quick once-over to make sure nothing is damaged, missing, unfastened, or that a piece of stock, adjustment key, wrench, or other tool is laying somewhere it shouldn’t be. Clear away sawdust that could interfere with alignment of the workpiece or prevent proper movement and function of the saw. Clear clogged air vents on the motor. Check to see that the saw pivots and slides easily through its entire range.

As long as the miter saw has power going to it, there is the possibility for the motor to start. Unplug the saw when putting your hands near the blade. Even coming in contact with the blade for half a revolution can do major damage to your hands. Always unplug it when changing blades, moving it, or when it’s not in use. If any part of the electrical system, such as the trigger, doesn’t seem to work correctly, stop and fix it. It could engage just at the wrong moment.

Use accessories that are either designed for your model saw, or that obviously match the threads, slots, whatever. Jury rigging a support, stop, hold-down, or whatever is not a good idea, but if you feel the need at least make sure it’s solid, and won’t move or bind up during and at the completion of the cut. Actually, don’t jury rig anything – the manufacturer spend good money engineering an accessory to work safely and correctly.

Make sure the workpiece is free of foreign matter (e.g. nails) that could be embedded in it.

If the piece is bowed or warped, place the outside of the bow against the fence, so it’s supported and won’t move and bind on the blade as the cut is being made. There should be no gap between the workpiece and either the fence or the table along the line of the cut. Do not cut stock that is so warped or twisted that it can’t be supported correctly. Round stock should be supported so that it can’t roll with the friction of the blade being applied. If you’re halfway through the round stock and it rolls, suddenly the stock is pressed into the blade, causing it to bite, quickly jerking the head out of your control.

Cut only materials listed in your owner’s manual. Miter saws are intended for wood, wood products, and maybe NON-ferrous metals – using a blade meant for that particular material.

As you make adjustments for various cuts, pay attention to where the blade will pass through the fence and make sure (mainly with bevel cuts) that neither the motor housing or blade will actually contact the fence. The Milwaukee 6955-20 requires the right fence to be removed when making a deep right bevel because of interference with the motor housing.

Safety While Using Your Miter Saw

Keep your fingers away from the blade when setting up a cut. Six inches is a good minimum distance, and some saws have marks to identify a “danger zone.” There is no reason to get closer. If the piece you’re cutting is small, it should be cut from a longer piece, or clamped so your fingers are well out of the way during the cut. Clamps are an excellent way to positively secure your workpiece, whereas holding the work against the fence by hand may allow it to slip, causing the blade to bind with unintended consequences.

Distractions are everywhere. You need to focus on the cut you’re making and where your hands when the blade is spinning. Pretty much everything else can wait the few seconds it takes to finish a cut and have the blade come to a stop.

Adjust and secure your fence for the cut you want to make.

Don’t hold your work cross handed. If it’s your left hand, keep it on the left side of the saw blade.

Don’t reach under the blade when it’s moving. Uh huh. Just saying…

Allow the blade to reach full RPM before cutting. You may have to wait a second longer when your saw has the “soft start” feature.

Slowly and evenly feed the blade into the stock. Not only is it safer, but you’ll get a smoother cut with less chance of chipping.

When making a sliding cut, first pull the saw head away from the fence before starting the saw, then lower it in an even motion down to the table (right through the workpiece if it’s too long to get the saw blade past it) and push the blade back through the stock. Allow the blade to come to a full stop before raising the saw head assembly. Under no circumstances do you want to pull the blade toward you to make the cut. The blade’s rotation could allow it to climb over the stock and slam the saw head back at you.

To make a non-sliding “chop” cut on a sliding miter saw, slide the head fully to the rear and lock the head in place on the rails. This prevents any unwanted movement of the saw head assembly during the cut. Some saws have a special lock that puts the head in the correct position to get the greatest vertical capacity, such as the DEWALT DW717. From the up position, turn the on and evenly lower the blade through the stock to the table. Allow the blade to come to a complete stop before raising the head.

If the saw becomes bogged down or begins to jam, release the trigger and let the saw come to a full stop. Then unplug the saw before you attempt to correct the problem or free the blade. Hold the saw steady as you release the trigger, since the braking action of the motor or electric brake will cause the saw to want to bite down further into the stock. That goes for any time you stop the saw before a cut is complete and the head is full down through the stock.

Using even pressure and allowing the blade to do the work without you forcing it through the stock will keep problems to a minimum, and create smoother cuts.

When cutting pieces near the maximum height capacity of the saw, the saw head may not lower enough to raise blade guard before starting the cut. In that case you will have to manually raise the blade guard with your free hand, which requires the workpiece be clamped. Don’t even think about holding the piece in place with a few fingers while using your forefinger to raise the guard.

Remember – Common sense is absolutely invaluable!

Now that you’ve decided on a sliding compound miter saw, likely to get the added horizontal cutting capacity of a slider, there are some other choices that can help that saw fit both your current and future needs while staying within your budget. Deciding just what kind of home improvement projects you plan to tackle and even whether you might try your hand at woodworking will give you some direction when considering the following points:

Will you need the extra vertical capacity afforded by a 12" model over a 10"? While it varies between manufacturers and models, ¾" additional is a good minimum figure. Model specifications can be found on manufacturer’s web sites for quick comparison, which is especially useful if you are concerned about a particular cut that the 10" model might not handle. The DEWALT DW717 for example, has tremendous vertical and horizontal capacity for a 10" slider, and is worth considering if you’re looking for greater capacity while retaining the size / weight / accuracy advantages of a 10" miter saw.

Would it be even better to go smaller than 10" to 7-1/2"? Depending on your intended use, something like the Makita LS0714 7-1/2-Inch Single Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw might be the ticket. Light weight, small footprint, with a high RPM motor that delivers glass smooth cuts, and the accuracy of a small blade it’s worth considering. Note that it’s a single bevel saw.

Would the convenience and speed of being able to cut bevels both left and right without flipping the stock be worth the added cost of the dual bevel feature? Angle cuts usually mean a complementary cut on the opposite end of the same piece and the adjoining piece, requiring the angles to be reset for each cut. Complex or nonstandard angles make the constant resetting particularly tedious and time consuming.

If you plan on transporting the saw, possibly to use at a vacation property, cottage, rental, etc., then the physical size and weight of the saw might be a factor. The ever-increasing number of woman do-it-yourselfers should consider that while even 10” models can vary by ten pounds, while 12” models can weight an additional 20 pounds. It’s much easier to handle a 45 lb. saw, as opposed to one weighing 65 lbs. Some models are specifically engineered to be light and compact.

Miter saw blades need to be chosen carefully as well, not only in regard to the material being cut, but given that a sliding saw can actually walk up a piece of stock, the blade “hook angle” should be kept to a very small positive angle at most, with a neutral or negative hook angle affording even greater control. If you plan on doing remodeling as well as woodworking you’ll want to consider having one blade for rough cuts and one for fine work. Depending on your projects, you might want to add a blade for non-ferrous metals and plastics.

Since you will actually be moving the saw blade horizontally on a sliding compound miter saw, feeding it into the stock, as opposed to just lowering the blade on a regular miter saw, the handle and trigger should be in a comfortable position. Saws have either horizontal or vertical handles, many rubber clad. If you’re a "lefty," be aware of the placement of the trigger safety switch.

A “soft start” feature and electronic brake makes your saw easier to live with and safer. Additionally, the brake actually speeds the cutting process by stopping the blade much sooner so the next cut can be lined up.

Effective dust collection is an important consideration for home improvement do-it-yourselfers, since you’re working around your home as opposed to a jobsite. Miter saw dust emissions are tough to tame, given that the exhaust is directed toward the stand in back of the saw, which acts as a deflector. Rubber dust boots attached to the back of the blade guard help to better channel the dust to the extraction point. In some cases, a good shop vac can tame an otherwise dusty monster, or virtually eliminate all but the finest dust from a saw with an already effective dust collection system. If you already have a vac, see if the saw’s pickup diameter matches your vac hose.

Will your saw be permanently mounted on a workshop bench, or set up only when in use and otherwise stored out of the way? In the latter case, and possibly even for workshop use, a miter saw stand is an excellent investment for ease of use, stability, safety, and flexibility of shop space.

To reduce the amount of clearance needed in back of the saw due to the sliding rails, consider the saws that allow the slides to be alternately secured to the motor assembly or the stationary mount, meaning the space for the slides can be switched to either the front or back of the saw. Pulling the slide all the way forward and securing them to the stationary mount reduces the clearance needed between the back of the saw and the wall.

Will the accessories and special features available for a particular model or brand of saw suit your needs? Milwaukee, for example decided to forego a laser on the Milwaukee 6955-20 in favor of dual work lights because lasers go out of alignment, and doesn’t include extension rails because it determined its target market of professionals mounts the saw on a stand. Watch for particular fence configurations as well. Some fences are tall for cutting crown molding, others slide on one side but not the other, some are removable for greater capacity. Checking out the additional accessories available will help you figure just how far you can expand on a saw’s uses and capacity. You may not be a pro, but those specific features could be one of the deciding factors in choosing a saw.

These considerations should help direct you to a saw that best suits your needs. Getting features that cost more now but at the same time increase a saw’s future usefulness, or help avoid an “upgrade” purchase down the road could be considered as economical as avoiding features that provide no benefit. While it’s near impossible to consider all the variables, taking some time now to think about future use will help you in making a better selection. You can compare features and specifications of all the sliding compound miter saws I’ve reviewed in one place on the Sliding Compound Miter Saw Features/Specifications Comparison page.

If you were only familiar with the DEWALT DW717 Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw‘s capacities (See it in action!), you might think the "10-inch" in the title of this page should actually be "12-inch," but this is a 10 inch slider that actually thinks it’s a 12 incher, with impressive 90° and 45° crosscut capacities of 2 x 12 dimensional lumber, and 2 x 14 when using it’s back fence feature. Vertical cut capacities are also impressive. The DW717 is a real workhorse, driven by a powerful 15 AMP motor, with lightweight ergonomic design, cam lock miter handle, tall sliding fence system, 7 bevel and 11 miter detents, in addition to it’s durability and ease-of-use.

DEWALT DW717 Features

The DW717 is equipped with an array of useful features both large and small, and it’s those little extras that make it a standout. An electronic brake, adjustable stainless steel miter detent plate, sliding fences both left and right, and accessories that extend productivity all make the operator’s life easier.

DW717 Power, Durability, Ease-Of-Use

The saw’s 15 AMP motor puts out 4,000 RPM through a V-belt drive to power through dense hardwoods, and it’s electronic brake contributes to both safety and productivity, stopping the blade within five seconds of releasing the trigger. The dual horizontal steel rails combine with linear ball bearings and an innovative clamping mechanism for smooth, precise sliding action. The durable machined base fence support makes sure the fence stays square, while improved ergonomics in the form of a horizontal handle keep controls operator friendly. A user commented that this saw is definitely “lefty friendly,” referring to the trigger placement. A spindle lock is provided for easier blade changes, a lock down pin helps avoid damage during transport, and a hole in the trigger for a padlock keeps your DW717 secure.

Wide Bevel / Miter Range With Precision Adjustments

The 0°-48° left and right bevel range combined with a miter range of 60° left and 52° right give the DEWALT DW717 tremendous versatility, made even greater by the miter detent override which allows you to precisely dial in those angles that are oh-so-close to a detent hole. The cam lock miter handle locks down the angle fast, and if the miter scale gets out of square, the stainless steel miter detent plate can be adjusted to bring it back to true. The seven bevel and eleven miter detents make setting standard angles quick and repeatable, and the included material clamp keeps your workpiece from moving during a cut.

DW717’s Tall Fence System Makes Setup Quick And Easy

The Tall Sliding Fence system adds to the saw’s vertical capacity, supporting 6-1/4 inch crown molding nested vertically, and 6 inch base molding set vertically against the fence. Supporting 6 inch base molding to the left of the blade and 3-1/2 inch to the right of the blade, the fence slides easily out of the way when you want to make bevel cuts. The DW717 uses DEWALT’s unique back fence design to increase capacity further, so you can make 45 degree bevel cuts in up to 2 x 14 dimensional lumber.

Dust Collection

Dust collection on this DEWALT miter saw is not what it could be, according to user reviews. It was pointed out that when the saw head is lowered during a cut, the dust collection tube is pointing north of 45 degrees, making collection with a dust bag difficult. Most users who employed a shop vac or other vacuum system felt they had no great problem with dust collection.

So what do users have to say about the DEWALT DW717?

The saw has received excellent reviews from users, and is currently rated 4.6 out of 5 by reviewers on Amazon.com. Here are some of their comments:

“I’m a professional trim carpenter and I own alot of blue, red and yellow tools. This has got to be the best I’ve ever bought.”

“Out of the box, everything was dead-on accurate, and at least if it wasn’t, Dewalt lets you make the adjustments yourself.”

“It’s been commented here that dust control is sub-par but I’ve had the DW717 hooked up to a Fein Vac w/ autostart and everything worked just great.”

“The saw has a lot of power and hasn’t struggled with anything I’ve thrown at it.”

“This saw is awesome! I make my living as a finish carpenter and this is one of the best saws I have ever purchased, and I have bought quite a few in my career.”

“It is simple to setup, erognomic to use, and very accurate. Plus, for those who take their saws to the worksite, the DW717 seems lighter or at least better balanced to carry than the competitors.”

“Huge cut capacity. I had thought I would need a 12″ slider to build my upper kitchen cabinets but this 10″ has more than enough capacity.”

“The miter detent override works great and it’s extremely easy to dial in very minor adjustments of less than .25 degree by hand.”

“The bevel detent system also works great and is accessible on the left and right hand side of the saw which is great.”

What Are The Cons?

Dust collection, as noted above, was the major complaint. If you are able to use a shop vac or other dust collection system, or you use the saw outside, this becomes much less of a factor. Some users found the stock blade to be poor quality, others not. The difference could be a change in the quality of stock miter saw blades over the years, or just different uses – framing versus woodworking. A very few minor complaints ranged from difficulty getting at the blade guard screws to change the blade, to wishing the table were a bit larger.

"Score one for the little guy!" describes Makita’s LS0714 Quad 10 Amp 7-1/2-Inch Single Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw perfectly. It’s small and light, but it’s also powerful, smooth, and extremely accurate with a large capacity for such a small miter saw. Delivering features like electronic speed control with both soft start and electronic braking, incredible dust collection, and glass smooth cuts, the LS0714 is ideal for the both the home do-it-yourselfer / woodworker and a range of professionals including finish carpenters, floor installers, remodelers, and general contractors.

Makita LS0714 Features

Unless you absolutely need the greater capacity of a larger miter saw, Makita’s LS0714 will take whatever you throw at it with no problem. Users report that it performs flawlessly whether you’re cutting pressure treated lumber or dense hardwood, with plenty of power for any job. Accurate right out of the box, the LS0714 is able to handle 2" x 12" lumber at 0° miter / 0°bevel, and 2" x 8" at 45° miter / 0° bevel. A hold down clamp is provided on the left side and does a good job of keeping stock in place.

A Small Sophisticated Powerhouse

The LS0714’s 10 AMP, 6,000 RPM direct-drive motor employs electronic speed control to improve performance, and is designed to never slip or bog down like belt-drive units. The high 6,000 RPM speed is one of the factors delivering glass smooth cuts. Power to cut through even the densest hardwood is made user-friendly by the soft start and electronic brake features. Owners indicate that both the soft start and brake are very fast (near instant start-up / stops in a second or two).

Extreme LS0714 Accuracy

The Makita LS0714 achieves it’s tremendous accuracy through a combination of both features and general characteristics. The 7-1/2" miter saw blade has no flex or wobble, which can be a consideration with larger blades. Makita’s four rail (two top, two bottom) / four linear ball bearing design keeps saw head deflection to a minimum, even with a long sliding distance. A large machined aluminum base with "buttery smooth" miter table movement provides additional stability. Users generally indicate that the Makita miter saw blade included with the package is excellent, producing smooth, fast cuts.
Note: According to users, the linear ball bearings on the Makita LS0714 may require a very short break-in period before they smooth out.

REALLY Good Dust Collection

Dust collection on miter saws is usually questionable, with a 50-75% capture rate being very acceptable. However, the Makita LS0714 delivers dust collection that draws rave reviews from most users, some saying that while it’s excellent with just the included dust bag, it collects virtually all the dust connected to a shop vac.

"The most surprising feature is the dust collection, it works. I hooked it up to my shop vac and did a bunch of test cuts and only a trace of dust ended up on my bench."

The LS0714 – Maximum Portability Built Solid

At 27.6 lbs. this miter saw is light in weight, but no lightweight when it comes to fit, finish, and a soild build. Obviously, close tolerances and attention to detail during assembly contribute to the LS0714’s superb accuracy and solid feel.

"This is the lightest, best machined, miter saw I have ever used (and I have used them all). Easily transported to third floors. It is great for about 85% of the work we do and we do major renovations and lots of trim work."

"The overall feel and sound of this saw is that of a quality built piece. I’m pretty sure that this will be the last saw I’ll ever need and recommend it highly."

"The fit and finish are exceptional."

Complaints?

The most common complaint was the limited selection and high price of 7-1/2" miter saw blades, but several users suggested 7-1/4" blades made for circular saws worked well and were less expensive. The Makita blade included in the package got high marks for quality. Some users wished there was a hold down clamp on the right side in addition to the one on the left, and others would have liked a dual bevel feature, but these were considered more a wishlist as opposed to flaws.
What do owners have to say about the Makita LS0714 7-1/2-Inch Sliding Compound Miter Saw?

This little miter saw has gotten rave reviews from online users, and is currently rated 4.9 out of 5 by reviewers on Amazon.com. Here are some of their comments:

"Smooth action and portable size have made it essential, my 10" sits at home while this one travels job to job. As a finish guy I rarely need to cut anything over 2" thick, I cut mouldings on the flat. This saw is perfect, you’re crazy to consider anything else."

"As a professional remodeler who doesn’t cut crown often this is the best take along saw you can buy, and it will be the only saw you use 97% of the time."

"This "little" gem is exactly what this 1st time home owner / avid do-it-yourself-er remodel-er needed. For 99% of what I need to do – decking, raised garden beds, shelving, coping, trim, etc. this little power house is perfect."

"The factory supplied blade is excellent, the best I have ever had come with a power tool."

"This saw I have had for several years now – it is light , functions flawlessly ever time , only wish blades were more common size…or 8 -1/4" size better yet – if you need a finish saw or very mobile unit for interior work etc. this is a top pick period."

"I would highly recommend this saw to anybody needing a accurate saw for finish work."

"The overall quality of the machine is first rate. All the movements are silky smooth and it was perfect out of the box. Even the dust collector works, capturing the majority of the sawdust."

"I bought this small/light weight saw to handle interior trim work…WOW! what a saw! Very smooth in handling and cutting, very powerful fast cutting motor/blade combo, very clean exact cuts right out of the box."

"But it is so accurate, you can cut thicker items without much trouble. It’s quick, clean. light weight. You can shave off paper-thin slices of wood (really)."

"Great saw – do yourself a favor – stop waffling like I was, and just buy it. The five star ratings on here are dead-on."

Digital Miter Angle Readout With Miter Angle Fine Adjust And Detent Override

Milwaukee’s digital miter angle readout on the 6955-20 showing angles down to tenths of a degree is not the only one in the industry, but the saw’s Miter Angle Fine Adjust makes it the only one to allow adjustments to one-tenth of a degree. These two features, combined with the detent override allow users to make repeatable cuts, adjusted for non-square conditions, over the entire miter angle range. The self-zeroing digital readout calibrates itself each time the turntable is placed in a miter detent, and requires no user adjustment. User reviews find the system fast despite it’s 1/10th angle increments, and extremely useful with an added level of precision:

"The fine adjustment feature is something that would be hard to live without after having used it."
"The digital readout has proven useful, especially on those not so square, stain grade joints that must be perfect."
"Digital angle readout with micro adjust – I found it to be very useful and it didn’t get in the way or seem ‘gimmicky’ to me at all."

Dual Integrated Jobsite Lights

Integrated work lights on each side of the blade are recessed in the saw’s housing and flood the work surface with light from useful angles. Controlled by an ON/OFF switch in the trigger handle, they eliminate the need to set up independent lights. They also need no calibration, and many users say they’d rather trust their own eyes to align the bade to a mark on a well lit surface than use a laser.

Smooth, Powerful Motor With Easy Starts, Quick Stops

The powerhouse 15 AMP, 3.3 HP motor uses Constant Power Technology (thru an Electronic Feedback Control Circuit) to maintain constant blade speed (3,250 RPM) and torque between load and no-load conditions. This results in smooth, clean, fast cuts even in hardwood. The electronic soft start takes less than two seconds to bring the blade up to speed, while an electronic brake shuts it down about four to five seconds after the trigger is released.

"The motors Constant Power Technology has a different feel when cutting, but performs flawlessly."

The Milwaukee 6955-20 Effectively Channels Dust Collection

An integral dust channel maximizes airflow to capture dust near the blade and direct it back through an elbow to the dust bag. Milwaukee claims a 75% "Best Dust Collection in the Industry!" dust collection rate. Some users agree and some say it’s more like 50%, but most agree that "Compared to any other miter saw out there, it does excellent!"

Of course hooking up some sort of dust collection system will improve performance, but the 6955-20’s collection tube is rectangular and requires an adapter to attach to a round vac hose. About a year after the saw was introduced Milwaukee released the Milwaukee 48-03-0200 Vacuum Attachment for Miter Saws: 6950-20 and 6955-20 to meet the need.

More Features Of The Milwaukee 6955-20 Dual Bevel Sliding Miter Saw

The large red single lever bevel adjustment is easy to use and has three positions:

Locked (down)

Unlocked with use of bevel detents (halfway up)

Unlocked with no detents (up)

"The single wide lever in back for adjusting bevel angles is a thing of beauty and works like a charm."

A clear blade guard gives you a superior view of the cut as it progresses, and is considered by users to be a definite improvement of other manufacturers smoked or opaque guards.

A depth of cut adjustment knob allows grooving and rabbeting, and although it’s easy to use, the adjustment is a bit coarse and "squishy," with too much play for finish cuts, but good for notching studs.

This is a large, heavy saw, so users indicated appreciation for the "well engineered" rubber hand grips on the sides of the machine, and the handle on the rear that can rest against your body to bear some of the weight.

There is a Lock-Off hole in the trigger that allows the use of a padlock with a 1/4" shackle to prevent unauthorized use of the saw.

What else do users have to say about the Milwaukee 6955-20 12-Inch Sliding Dual Bevel Miter Saw?

The saw has received excellent online user reviews, and is currently rated 4.6 out of 5 by reviewers on Amazon.com. Here are some of their comments:

"Deflection. It does a great job and takes quite a bit of force to move it side to side."

"Very light for a saw of this size which is cool because I move my saw around alot."

"The digital fine miter adjustment feature alone makes me look like I’m a pro when it comes to finishing work and is worth the price of entry for this saw."

"Get this and the T4B and you can’t go wrong."

"The sawdust collection is superb, I would say it collects about ninty percent or more of the dust."

"The soft-start is wonderful, and the electric brake is also nicely gentle. No jumping around."

"Quite simply the finest miter saw ever built. I have used them all (no joke), and nobody else even comes close."

"The Blade that comes with it is awesome, it is a 60 tooth fine blade."

Optional Accessories For The Milwaukee 6955-20 Sliding Dual Bevel Miter Saw

Unlike most manufacturers, Milwaukee does not list any particular accessories for the 6955-20 on it’s website, such as optional fences, supports, stands, etc. However, there are three accessories that I can enthusiastically recommend: The Milwaukee 48-03-0200 Vacuum Attachment for Miter Saws: 6950-20 and 6955-20 that I found through a user’s review (which actually seems more like rectifying an oversight than an accessory to expand the saw’s use), the BOSCH MS1226 Vertical Quick Clamp which apparently fits the 6955-20 like it was designed for it, and the Bosch T4B Gravity-Rise Miter Saw Stand which is a fine piece of equipment that also fits the 6955-20 perfectly. These three accessories are mentioned elsewhere on the page, but I thought it would be a good idea to put them all in one place.

What Are The Cons?

There were some issues with the digital miter readout, which can occasionally give an imprecise reading, but users pointed out that it’s easily solved by moving the handle to a miter detent to re-calibrate, as directed in the owner’s manual (which users said to be well written, including crown molding angle charts).

Users complained that there was no hold down clamp supplied. One reviewer said they bought a Bosch Quick-clamp that fit on the back of the fence like it was original equipment.

NOTE on hold down clamp: As of this writing, according to user reviews, Milwaukee does not make a clamp that works with the tall fence on this saw, saying the saw was designed to work without a clamp. However, the BOSCH MS1226 Vertical Quick Clamp apparently fits very well into the pre-drilled holes behind the Milwaukee 6955-20 fence and works perfectly.

Complaints about the fences centered on the left fence sliding when the right one does not, and that when a deep right bevel is dialed in, the motor housing gets in the way, so the right fence must be removed.

Some users felt the saw was a bit pricey, but still well worth the investment for the features and quality if you can afford it.

There is a general resignation among users to the fact that this is a large, heavy saw and therefore difficult to haul around. Most felt that a miter saw stand was the best solution for stability, safety, and reasonable portability.

The table below lists features, specifications, and other information included on the individual sliding compound miter saw review pages, condensed and assembled in one place to allow for a fairly comprehensive comparison between models and brands. There are a lot of abbreviated terms, but I tried to keep them understandable.

Yes, it scrolls off the page… I considered a number of different options, but that seemed the most useful and user friendly. Model numbers are included at the top, middle, and bottom of the columns so you can easily see which saw’s information you’re viewing. (If you have a tilt-wheel mouse you can scroll horizontally without using the scrollbar just by pushing left or right on the wheel. Not much call for it, so you might not even realize your mouse has the feature.)
