A Poem: Collective Privacy

For now, I have less than 287 pages worth of private space.
In between the covers of a novel or a novella,
a memoir, a tell-all; posthumously published books of all kinds
are where I find my private space which is limited.

Space is limited, in my life as a daughter,
a devoted student, a creative who begins a task with fervor
without turning out my efforts from the last one.
Space is limited in my life as a multitasker,

where something is always happening. Where
I invest my private space towards whatever it is that I’m doing
which is fine. Because I bore easily. Because my cross to bear is
intellectual. Restless. Monstrous. Passionate.

In my collective privacy, I am both feminine and masculine,
young and old; either, without design. I grow there:
in all of my private spaces, I grow. Personalities,
situations, experiences knit themselves into my being.

Although there, in my private space, I am in someone else’s company,
it is like being home. In one’s living room that is rarely inhabited by one.
So it is fine. In my private space I seek comfort, understanding, the
fruit of knowledge. In my private space, I don’t exist— I am still—
looking on, enraptured, until the book ends.

A Poem: Grace

Fact is, I was sinking.
My best friend offered me
a gift. She gave me a CD
to listen to. She didn’t want it.

I, on the count of never getting new things,
accepted her gift. I went home to listen to it;
killing two birds with one stone, I drowned
out the clamor of my ireful home.

Never having listened to this particular band before,
I had no idea what I would hear. I wanted to like it,
but I didn’t expect to like it. I should have asked her
If she thought I would like it. You know,

when you’re sinking, you take a lot of risks in the hopes
that maybe (just maybe) something will inflate you; in the fight
to stay above the waters at those times when the floods rush in and
your hunger to live is at risk of subsiding. When I was young.

Well, the CD was gorgeous. The lyrics spoke to me in a language I had been
searching for. I wanted so badly to be understood; I still do. The voice of Adam
gave me the life I didn’t think I could have. All 13 songs penetrated me in a place that
I had forgot existed. I lived by that CD; I healed by it.
The anthems to my sorrow lifted me up and saved me.

A Poem: Summer

After the rains are gone and the pollen sticks,
the sun is out; bugging me with its fiery lingo.
If I look hard enough, I can see the road sizzle and hear
bumblebees whispering soft words outside of my window.

The sun is out, prattling on with sweltering innuendo;
a lonesome ice-cream melts in the heat from neglect.
The bees now whisper honeyed words outside of my window.
They remind me that sweets are mere trifles to us.

Dear non-traditional students, you are unstoppable.
You are willing to overcome circumstance to follow your passions, no matter the cost. Rest assured that time is on your side; forward motion (no matter how small) will propel you towards your goals. Allow those who are skeptical of you to feed your fervor. Take their idle opinions in stride while you show them how to master uncertainties. Only worry that you may wake up one day and not be where you intend to be. If you make your intentions clear the idle will move aside. Academia craves your passion, your drive, and your initiative. Professors respect your diligence and patience. Your cohorts are envious of your resolve; some will try to crucify you for it. Stay the course; those little storms will blow over.

Remember that you have jumped hurdles that were supposed to be too high. You’ve crossed paths that were supposed to be cut off to you. Find solace in having silent strength. There is strength in knowing who you are, in knowing what you want to do. There is strength in accepting that you need help, and in asking for it. You are not alone. There are hundreds of thousands of students like you. There’s no penalty for blooming late. Keep harnessing the strength to act of your own accord. There is no award for beginning or finishing with others your age. The only reward worth reaping from life will result from the things you sow. Don’t let others reduce the merit of your life choices because they don’t share them.

Always have faith in yourself,
