I know in the past when I have tried to lose weight, it often backfired. Yep, I would actually gain weight while trying to lose it. Nothing feels more defeating than that, let me tell you.

I finally figured out that dieting simply doesn’t work. Then I started wondering why. Being a nutritionist and weight loss expert, as well as a wellness coach led me to some pretty interesting answers.

* Deprivation leads to bingeing
* Calorie restriction leads to a sluggish metabolism, followed by weight gain
* Artificial sweeteners lead to excessive hunger
* Over-exercising results in inflammation and weight gain.
* Cutting out entire food groups (grains or fats usually) causes nutrient deficiencies and cravings

When you have a diet plan that asks you to restrict your calories, you feel deprived. If you are rebellious, like I am, when someone tells me I can’t have something I want it even more!

Desiring something sweet often leads to artificial sweeteners while trying to avoid calories. Those are shown in scientific studies to lead to excessive hunger. Over-exercising to burn more calories leads to more than just sore muscles. Watch out for inflamed joints and even weight gain. Nutrients in a variety of foods are necessary for good health, so eliminating them completely from your diet will lead to deficiencies over time.

Some experts think nutritional deficiencies lead to cravings and binge eating. I suggest a whole food vitamin and mineral supplement for "insurance."

So what constitutes a good all-around diet, one for a life-time, not just a quick fix to get off excess pounds? Here’s my take on that question.

Eat the rainbow everyday. This means you will be eating lots of vegetables and fruits. If you are diabetic, limit fruit to 3 or less a day to avoid excess blood sugar spikes

When eating grains, make them whole grains without flour. Steel-cut oats are a favorite. Ezekiel bread, made with sprouted grains is another I recommend to clients.

Fats are important, so be sure to get those everyday. Fatty fish like sardines or salmon are good choices. So is avocado. Coconut oil is no longer considered a bad fat, due to its chemical composition. Lose your fear of eggs, the fat they contain is healthy too. Nuts are full of healthy fat and can be eaten for quick snacks.

Protein is important, so eat it regularly throughout the day. Our body doesn’t store protein. It is used for repair or converted into sugar or fat for energy. Small portions throughout the day keeps us happy.

Exercise in moderation utilizing walking, strength training and stretching. Allow time to build up to a level of fitness that’s right for you. Avoid injuries by learning proper form.

Overall, the best thing you can do if you want to stay at a healthy weight is to find a plan that works for you as a lifestyle, not a simple fix.

I tested it today. Since I'm tracking everything while on The Biggest Loser Club program, I write down the 9 minute walk to the gym. I've been estimating that I walk a 13-14 minute mile. Hah!

I put on my Garmin and I hustled on my walk. It was actually just under 9 minutes and my pace was 15.28 min/mile. That's 48 calories burned. At least now I know and won't overestimate calories again.

How about you? Where do you fall in this spectrum...over estimate exercise or under estimate food consumption or both?

I haven't been following either their meal plan or their workout plan. However, I have been logging all my food intake and my workouts. This really is the main key to any weight loss program, I think.

The mere fact of writing down what I eat makes me hyper-aware that I need to alter what I put in my body and adjust the portions. The fact of writing everything is helping me make better decisions.

I'm struggling with staying within my calorie range of 1100 - 1400 per day but I know that cutting or adjust some of my regular comfort foods can help with that. My trouble spots are sugar cravings and my glass of red wine with dinner. I need to study the food plan, menu and shopping lists so I can get on track with that.

I have been working out every day and burning a minimum of 350 calories with my treadmill runs and circut on the weight machines. Today, I did a 6 mile run/climb on a trail at Will Rogers State Park. Half the trail is uphill and then downhill on the finish. We did the 2 mile lo0p 3 times. It was a good glute workout and I burned 768 calories. Next week I run a half marathon.

The BLC recommendation is to weigh yourself once a week. I've been cheating and weighing everyday and have lost 1 pound in the first two days. I'm happy with that. It's the right direction. Let's see how the rest of the week goes...

Just goes to show that it's not as much about the exercise as it is about reducing food consumption. Not that I haven't known that all along. My calorie target is 1,200 - 1,400 per day.

You get customized meal plans and shopping lists, customized fitness plan, discussion forums and you can create buddy groups and set up your own challenges which are tracked online.
Friday, January 7 is day one for me. I've got three months and 28 pounds to lose. I've done it before with Weight Watchers (33 lbs in 7 months) so there's no reason I cannot do it again. It's a matter of discipline (my word for the year for my business) and focus. I don't expect to lose 28 lbs in 3 months, however I will be well on my way... wish me luck!
