Tunk: Blog Post 3

2013-04-03T00:33:00.000+01:00

Lab level next. Decided to go with a multi floored dodge room. Each room would get progressively harder. Each death will bring you back to the start of each floor. The vertical cylinders are to be lasers. Balls on the top floor will fall at different speeds.

My next task was to set out how the flying level of Tunk should be laid out. For this section i decided to slip it up into three area. Ground, ascension and air. It roughly drew it out in pen what i was mentally thinking.

the plan was to have Tunk skim the roof tops avoiding signs. Once he begins to ascend higher he has to avoid bullets from tanks etc. One he plateaus at the top of the buildings get gets bombarded with bullets which he has to avoid before coming to an unbeatable enemy who eventually shoots him down. The two picture below show this progression and final template of level.

Tunk: Blog Post 1

This week i set about organizing the layout for the retro mini game. The basic idea was to create a short retro style game which would be challenging and addictive. Using a grid based system, i set out each of the games walls to be evenly spaced for ease of editing. It was my wish to have the directional buttons move the character one space at a time. This would leave the game as a pure timing exercise. Below is a provisional layout of the mini game.

From each black dot, yellow lasers will flash at different speeds. The player will be required to time each laser to progress. Further on keys will need to be collected in order for doors to open to progress. As seen above, small red/greens keys will remove to large red/green doors. The above designs textures are temporary. This mini game will show how Tunk escapes to the sewer (Green Door).

Steve has begun working on the scripts, while Pete has been keeping us updated on the character model of Tunk and it looks very good at the moment. At the time of writing, Steve and I have a half working prototype of this mini game.

Pretty Lights, real name Derek Vincent Smith, is an American electronic music artist from Fort Collins, Colorado. Since July 2010, Adam Deitch has assisted during live performances. The name comes from a Pink Floyd concert poster that read "Come and watch the pretty lights!". His tracks are hip hop orientated electronic tunes, but more recently they have added a few dubstep wobbles to the mix. Enjoy!

Fabienne: Whose chopper is this?
Butch: It's Zed's.
Fabienne: Who's Zed?
Butch: Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead. But Zeds Dead also refers to Zack and Dylan. Two electronic/dubstep producers who hail from Toronto and Ontario, Canada. The pair have been together since 2004 and have recently received recognition for their works through DJ sets from Rusko, Diplo and Bassnectar. Kissy Sellout and Skream were two of the first to take notice of the duo, featuring their remix of Blue Foundation's "Eyes on Fire" on their radio shows, BBC Radio 1 and Rinse FM respectively. Now get on the fucking chopper and lets end this scene.

POGO - HarryPotter/Hook/Alice/Pixars UP/WillyWonka

2011-08-28T11:42:00.002+01:00

Nick Bertke is an Australian. He is from Perth, he is a sampler and he gets people to call him Pogo. The difference between him and other samplers is that he picks a theme and runs with it for an entire EP. He started off with Disney movies and has since grown to anything that tickles his fancy. His ability to mash up samples is quite amazing and each song achieves a melodic ambiance that really captures the theme he is running with. Early themes such as Hook and Alice in Wonderland showcase his madness.

Pogo - Alice by Syxxia

After moving onto sampling Harry Potter his notoriety grew to where he was commissioned by Pixar themselves to sample their then up and coming animation UP. This no doubt helped his previous songs with Disney as soon after all samples were cleared and he started selling his work.

He is currently on tour in America. With any luck he will make his way to this side of the pond, along with Ratatat. pleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease. ENJOY!!!

RATATAT

2011-08-22T11:02:00.001+01:00

It was Christmas of 2007 and my love affair with Hypemachine steered my interest towards this distinctive electronic band. Checking their touring list i was disgusted to find that they had played Electric Picnic festival just a few months earlier. No matter, i thought, they'll be back again no doubt. No such luck. They've flown over Ireland for 3-4 European tours and seem quite content to hob nob with the French and Germans. You know, "Europeans".

New York natives Evan Mast and Mike Stroud have gone the Daft Punk and Justice route of electronic music making. Identify a sound and mold in into the veins of your music. Using a set up of a synth and electric/bass guitars hooked up to effects, they've stretched their sound to 4 albums with a surprisingly fresh feel each time. A tough feat but the duo are clearly comfortable in their creations.

Royksopp - Happy Up Here

2011-08-11T17:27:00.004+01:00

*** ROYKSOPP - HAPPY UP HERE ***

After 2001's debut album 'Melody A.M.' sold a million copies, and the acclaimed sequel 'The Understanding' paved the way to further success, the duo of Svein Berge and Torbjorn Brundtland, announce the release of their new album this spring. Preceding the album comes first single 'Happy Up Here.' The second or so of laughing sets the single out for you. The title of the track is spot on. It's happy music with joyful vocals. I'm not totally won over by some of the vocal work towards the end of the track, it's a bit whispery and the change of pace doesn't totally fit with the awesome electro backing but overall it's a great return for the Norwegians. Full of energy, the short track is over before you know it and could honestly benefit from an extra minute or so.

Coldcut & Hexstatic - Timber

2011-08-10T16:20:00.001+01:00

Coldcut are Matt Black and Jonathan More. Together they set up the Ninja Tune label in 1990 which now has over 80 signed acts. This song (and video) was composed and put together with on of their signed groups Hexstatic (Stuart Warren Hill & Robin Brunson). This award winning video was one of the first to use video splicing to fit the music. Combined with an amazing track, it epitomizes Ninja Tune and shows exactly why they are the UKs leading trip hop and electronic label. Enjoy.

The Subs - Mitsubitchi / The Subs Vs The Party Harders - The Pope Of Dope

2011-08-09T19:23:00.002+01:00

THE SUBS - MITSUBITCHI

THE SUBS V THE PARTY HARDERS - THE POPE OF DOPE

Double post today. The Subs are a Belgian electronic group on Dr Lektroluvs record label. They consist of 3 members whose names you probably cannot pronounce. Jeroen De Pessemier, Wiebe Loccufier and Highbloo....who is also a part of The Party Harders. After hits like "Fuck That Shit", they put together the synth line gem that is Mitsubitchi. Its infectious. This however is not on any album, its an EP only song. Not that that matters but their 08 debut album was good enough to grab my attention without it. And i like that sort of stuff. Their new album was scrapped and they had to start again when one of the band members left his laptop in his car and the car was, of course, broken into. Why they had everything in one place, no one will ever know. No word on what make of car he had though. The second tune is a collaboration with Highbloos other group, The Party Harders. I know nothing about them. I dont even know what is being said in the song but the general gist is taking drugs I assume. The video is a cracker. I could point out the obvious and tie this song back into the first one, but i wont. Enjoy

Bonobo - Kong

2011-08-08T17:34:00.001+01:00

Bonobo has been an active artist on the Ninja Tune label since joining in 2000. He has has released 4 albums to date. Bonobo has evolved from a sample-based producer to touring with a live band, (comparable to Cinematic Orchestra on the same label)....a common trend among electronic artists these days it seems. The song above, Kong, comes from his latest album "Black Sands" and stuffs breakbeats, groovy basslines and samples into its 3:57 timeline (there's some jazz in it too). The album is as laid back as the man himself, Simon Green, who took a leisurely 4 years to put this album together and im guessing it wasn't an intensive 4 years as the chillout album would testify. One thing's for sure, he has found a knack for atmospheric multi-layered tunes that are as short as they are sweet. Enjoy.
