Billions of years later, we are recreating this matter in high energy particle accelerators and studying its properties to try to understand how we came to be. The world's largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) just started operating last November and scientists from all over the world are busy studying the debris from the high energy collisions to look for evidence of new, undiscovered particles and investigate the quark gluon plasma. Dr. Jennifer Klay, assistant professor of physics at Cal Poly, who is working with her students on an experiment called ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) will provide an entertaining introduction to the science of particle collisions and what they might tell us about the nature of our Universe.

This event is free and open to the public. Students of all ages, but especially middle and high school aged, are encouraged to attend. The seminar will last 1 hour including a Q&A session, with refreshments and conversation afterward.

Many thanks to PG&E for allowing us use of their facility.

Download the flyer in color or in black and white.

Facebook Event
