Sir John Crofton, a pioneering clinician who demonstrated that antibiotics could be safely combined to cure tuberculosis, a dread disease that once killed half the people who contracted it, died on Nov. 3 at his home in Edinburgh. He was 97.

Sir John started his research in the late 1940s, just as the first antibiotics were entering clinical practice, carrying with them the hope of conquering a disease for which helpless physicians had little to offer besides bed rest. But the mutable tubercle bacillus proved an elusive target, becoming resistant to each successive drug tried. Increasingly, researchers came to believe that drugs alone would never cure tuberculosis.

The artist Jeanne-Claude has died. She created the 2005 art installation in Central Park called “The Gates” with her husband, Christo.

She was 74.

Her family says Jeanne-Claude died Wednesday night at a New York hospital from complications of a brain aneurysm.

Ken Ober, who hosted the 1980s MTV game show “Remote Control” and helped produce the shows “Mind of Mencia” and “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” has died. He was 52.

His agent, Lee Kernis, says Ober was found dead Sunday in his Santa Monica home. Kernis says Ober complained of headaches and flu-like symptoms on Saturday night but the cause of his death wasn’t clear.

Edward Woodward, the star of films including “Breaker Morant” and “The Wicker Man,” died Monday. He was 79.

Woodward, who starred at “The Equalizer” on television, died in a hospital in Cornwall after an illness, said Janet Glass of the Eric Glass Ltd. agency in London.

Woodward is survived by his second wife, actress Michele Dotrice, their daughter, and two sons and a daughter from his first marriage, which ended in divorce.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.

On November 19, 2008, while addressing the topic of climate change and reducing emissions, Presidential candidate Barack Obama said,

“Delay is no longer an option. Denial is no longer an acceptable response.”

But, on November 15, 2009, President Barack Obama and other world leaders agreed to delay a climate pact.

David Lloyd, who wrote scores of scripts for some of the most popular television sitcoms of the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s — including the memorable Chuckles the Clown episode of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” which was revered by comedy connoisseurs for wringing belly laughs from a funeral — died Tuesday at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 75.

The cause was prostate cancer, which was diagnosed 21 years ago, his son Christopher said.

Mr. Lloyd is survived by his wife, Arline, whom he married in 1958; a sister, Sally; two daughters, Julie and Amy; and three sons, Douglas, Christopher and Stephen, the last two of whom are television writers. Christopher Lloyd said that his father’s wit and restless intelligence created an intellectually competitive household that was especially focused on what was funny.

Thomas J. O’Malley, the aviation engineer who pushed the button that launched the rocket that carried John Glenn into orbit in 1962, and who five years later played a major role in reviving the Apollo moon program after a launching-pad fire killed three astronauts, died Friday in Cocoa Beach, Fla. He was 94 and lived in Cocoa Beach.

The cause was pneumonia, his daughter, Kathleen O’Malley, said.

Besides his daughter, Mr. O’Malley is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Anne Arneth; two sons, Thomas Jr. and James; three sisters, Winifred Dean, Eileen Lohr and Dorothy Ihde; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

John J. O’Connor III, 79, an Arizona lawyer and civic leader who became active in Washington’s social and charitable circles after his wife, Sandra Day O’Connor, became the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, died Nov. 11 in Phoenix. He had Alzheimer’s disease.

Mr. O’Connor and Sandra Day were married Dec. 20, 1952, at the Day family home, the Lazy B Ranch. She survives, along with three sons, Scott, Brian and Jay; and six grandchildren.
