"The task of art is to transform what is continuously happening to us, to transform all these things into symbols, into music, into something which can last in man’s memory. That is our duty. If we don’t fulfill it, we feel unhappy. A writer or any artist has the sometimes joyful duty to transform all that into symbols. These symbols could be colors, forms or sounds. For a poet, the symbols are sounds and also words, fables, stories, poetry. The work of a poet never ends. It has nothing to do with working hours. Your are continuously receiving things from the external world. These must be transformed, and eventually will be transformed. This revelation can appear anytime. A poet never rests. He’s always working, even when he dreams. Besides, the life of a writer, is a lonely one. You think you are alone, and as the years go by, if the stars are on your side, you may discover that you are at the center of a vast circle of invisible friends whom you will never get to know but who love you. And that is an immense reward."

It's yet another wet and cold weekend and it looks like the winter is fighting hard to stay.
I thought a new bunch of flowers would be in order.

Also, I want to use these flowers to say Thank You.
Thank you dear friends for your support and thoughts!
I'm blogging for around 3 years and it still catches me off guard how much you guys, as virtual as you are, those of you I was lucky to meet and those I (still!) haven't met; care and are there to offer your support, encouragement and sweet words.
After my last post (that was over nothing serious really, just a little winter blues) I got a couple of emails and tweets that made me think (not for the first time) that sometimes my 'bloggy' friends know me better than my 'real' friends.
Your emails (/comments/tweets/messages) mean the world to me (you know who you are!).

Fighting the cold

We are all under the weather in the Slow Noodle casa.
It started with my little one last week, and two days later we joined forces and decided on a communal flu.
It's not as bad as it sounds, I have to admit.
We're not feeling too well, yes, but somehow we're having (almost) a jolly good time here between wiping our noses, checking our temperature, and lazing around with books and movies.

Could have been nice to be spoiled a little while we bravely fight the cold away!

My online presence might be a little limited lately, but it is only because of good reasons!
If you follow me on twitter (if not - please do! I would love to keep in touch!) you know I'm enjoying working with clay lately and it takes a lot of my time. I'm eager to share with you more and promise to do it soon.

Laid Back

Recently we had long talks around the dinner table about the way things are getting more and more complicated around us. I'm talking about little things, not trying to end the famine in Africa or conducting world peace. You know, the little things like kids' birthday parties, family holidays, even dinners and gatherings with friends.
We too often see people around us putting so much effort into one tiny event and then instead of having good time and simply enjoying the moment, everything gets so ceremonial, pompous, overdone. Or plainly - NOT FUN.

Seems to me that there is hardly any place nowadays for spontaneity. Why is it taking weeks to set up a date for dinner with friends? Where are all the easy going birthday parties where the children play pass-the-parcel and musical chairs whilst making a mess and getting their face smudged with a simple-delicious chocolate cake, while their parents enjoy themselves instead of falling apart after a month of preparations?

Is it just me thinking everything's getting more and more complicated and often exaggerated?
Just wishing the world could be a little less serious and little more laid back, you know?

Dash Magazine

Somehow, I totally missed hearing about Dash Magazine when it was launched, last february.
Luckily, last month I found the first issue in our local news agency.

The cover caught my eye with its fetching illustration (by Meriç Canatan) and its excellent tagline - Illustrating Fashion, and I didn't need a second look to know that if I do buy one magazine a season, it's going to be this one.
And boy, is it grand!
I swallowed the whole thing, cover to cover, immediately.
It is so beautifully designed! I love the clean, smart layout and muted colours, the fresh content which is both very well written and fun to read, the typography, refined styling, and above all, the introduction with so many new (to me) artists and illustrators such as Spiros Halaris, Zoe Irvin, Nadeesha Godamunne (4th photo above), Chelsea Brown (2nd photo from bottom), Elisabeth Bukanova (last photo), and many, many others.

I'm totally in love with it and already looking forward to the 2nd issue in August!

Last week I got a lovely email from Lilian with an intro to her shop boyfren / girlfren on Etsy.
I immediately fell in love with her sweet bags (can't even say which one is my favorite, I just love them all!) but I'm especially smitten with the Big color / Little color tiny coloring book!
I think it makes the most adorable gift for anyone needs a little creativity boost or just a smile, or as a great companion for a long flight...

Curating Colour - 4th Edition

I'll thought I'll go back to the tradition of having a Curating Colour post on a Monday, it's a good thing, I think, to start the week with a little colour right?

Those impressive abstract paintings of Michelle Armas are so beautifully haunting. To me they look like fractions of my dreams. Bursts of colour that are at the same time wild and harmonious and have so much energy, passion and happiness in them

Another set of beautiful abstract work, but in a very different form, is the one coming from k19studio:

k19studio is a German based art studio that started with the idea of creating original art that is accessible to everyone. They had made a dozen of series of original geometric paintings that are executed in the technique of acrylic on canvas or aluminum, in high quality and an affordable price.
I especially love the Semi-Transparency series.

Ah, I love the way Natsumi Hayashi is floating around Tokyo...

"Clink" is a Larice Barbosa's project that combines the click of a camera shutter with the ink of Larice's great illustrations. I remember seeing some of her early works on her Flickr and now I couldn't avoid falling in love with the whole project.

The Guggenheim museum expands their digitalized archives and launches museum exhibition catalogues in digital format. This is such an incredible resource for art lovers/students. I spend a couple of hours last night browsing exhibitions' catalogues of some of my favorite artists such as Léger (here) and Klee, and can't wait to browse the many many more available at the digital archive.

Dutch designer Lucas Maassen has hired his sons to paint a furniture collection he has designed and created (he actually paid them 1 Euro for every piece of furniture they had painted!).
I love the way the kids' height-factor effected the painting. Such great design mind! (via Mocoloco)

Such exquisite, dainty hair accessories from Conroy & Wilcox, they look like little works of art.

I've watch this intriguing video from glamour.is, documenting the design process of Icelandic fashion designer Agla Stefánsdóttir's latest collection for at least dozen time. Read the interview and watch more photos here.

Books for the New Year

I borrowed some big piles of books from the library just before the holidays as I assumed I will have so much spare time and fantasized about laying down on the beach with a good book. Ah! Nice dreaming... As much as we didn't celebrate in a grand way and we are slow people by our nature - the holidays were much busier than I planned it to be and so the books turned out to be Books for the New Year.
Well, it doesn't really matter does it?

The Sense of an Ending / Julian Barnes - I'm just about to finish it and it is as great as I have expected. I have a thing for books about smart young adults mystery "adventures" in collage (The Secret History by Donna Tartt is another great example), maybe because I myself didn't had such experiences. This book is a pure delight.

The Suitcase / Sergei Dovlatov - Sergei Dovlatov is one of Alex favorite authors and so I was so happy to discover this translation (written originally in Russian). I couldn't resist reading the first couple of pages and loved its brilliant, wry tone.

No One Belongs Here More Than You / Miranda July is a recommandations from Danica. I was always intrigued by Miranda July. I wished I have enjoyed her much more than I do. It's a funny feeling - I feel she Deserves my likeness but I just couldn't bring myself to actually enjoy her first movie. Danica put this feeling really nicely in words in her review for July's second film and mentioned this book so I thought maybe her words will talk to me better than her visuals. I read two stories already and really liked it.
By the way, in case you've missed it - here's a short video of July suggesting how to remain productive and creative while keeping distractions in bay. Great!

The Joys of Excess / Samuel Pepys is a new publication of Pepys by Penguin Classics. Peppy's celebrates gatherings, feasts and the indulgence of great eating and drinking what makes this book a A great book for the holidays!

Me, You / Erri de Luca - my first read of Erri de Luca. Can't wait.

Into the War / Italo Calvino - Italo Calvino is one of my favorite writers so this autobiographical new publication is a great discovery for me.

Cinema Hotel was originally one of the first cinemas in Tel Aviv (back then named "Esther" after the owner's wife Nathaniel Moses).
The building is one of around 4,000 Bauhaus buildings built in Tel Aviv from the 1930s, what is now known to be the White City of Tel-Aviv - an UNESCO world heritage city.
I saw it a couple of times as a cinema when I was a kid and many years later standing empty and sad. It really warmed my heart to see it go back to its glory and the beautiful way it was renovated while keeping the place's spirit.

You know how attracted I am to street art. I'm probably not made of the right stuff that make artist take their art out. Blik is A short animation tells the story of a young boy who moves to a new neighbourhood and falls in love for the first time.

Seriously one of the best animations I've seen lately. I was amazed at how beautifully emotional it is and how the characters express so much with their blank faces.

P.P.S. A herd of about ten feral deer found their way to a hill just behind where the Man works, in the Waite Conservation Reserve. I have no idea how they got there and apparently they damage the conservation area where they're roam. We plan a little hike on the weekend to try and photograph them before they're gone. Can't wait!
