“Last month Wood launched his newest album The G-Train at The Ellington. The session musicians included saxophonist Carl Macke and trumpet player Matt Jordell to complement the Graham Wood Trio. Together they improvised the album’s grittiest tracks. Wood composed the album’s most poignant and evocative songs. Dahli’s Delight has a melody that is like a child walking in autumn. It is beautiful and melancholic. Closes, inspired by a late night drinking partner, consists of a rhythmic swagger and piano runs which evoke the sensation of liquor tumbling down your throat.”

The reason behind the title The G Train was that when I was in New York I was going to Brooklyn to check out a lot of the more underground gigs. The best way for me to get to Brooklyn was to connect to the G Train – a suburban line from Queens to Brooklyn. It was on some of those colourful late night jazz journeys on the G Train that I decided to follow this train theme with the album. You get to sit and think a lot when you are on the train – something not so common when I am in Perth – and I think that’s when the ideas were really hatching for me. It was the sounds, the smells, the interesting characters – freaks – and the whole hustle and bustle of New York.”

The CD and Label launch is being held tonight at the:

Ellington Jazz Club
191 Beaufort St Perth 6000
Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd December 2009 at 7.30pm

CDs are available on the night for the special launch price of $20.

Tonight is a celebration of the release of Graham’s 3rd CD as leader. The G Train was recorded over 2 days in 2008 and features Graham on piano with Matt Jodrell (trumpet) Carl Mackey (sax) Sam Anning (bass) and Daniel Susnjar (drums).
The tunes on this CD were written by Graham on a 3 week journey through Japan and The USA in 2008. There is a common train theme to the tunes and hence the title of the CD.

We are pleased to be joined by Daniel Susnjar who is returning from the USA for Christmas and will fortunately be here to perform. Graham and Carl are the other players on the release who will be present but unfortunately Matt Jodrell and Sam Anning will not be able to be in Perth for this launch. They will be replaced by Paul Pooley on bass and Ricki Mallet on Trumpet.

This evening will also celebrate the launch of the new WAAPA record label entitled “Slow Release”. Graham’s CD will be the first featured release and we look forward to many more interesting musical offerings from WAAPA staff and students.
