But what if there were a trivia game where you could not only ask Google, but were encouraged to do so? A Google a Day is a new daily puzzle that can be solved using your creativity and clever search skills on Google. Questions will be posted every day on agoogleaday.com and printed on weekdays above the New York Times crossword puzzle. We'll reveal each puzzle's answer the next day in the Times and on agoogleaday.com, along with the search tips and features used to find it.

Just like traditional crossword puzzles, the difficulty of the questions increases over the course of the week, so by Thursday or Friday, even the most seasoned searcher may be stumped.

One month ago, a massive 9.0 earthquake and one of the worst tsunamis in history struck northeastern Japan. Many people in the most impacted areas still have immediate needs for shelter and supplies, and we're continuing to help by maintaining the Crisis Response page and building tools and resources related to the disaster.

Since the crisis, people around the world have sent countless messages of hope and support to the people of Japan. Some of them showed sympathy for the victims. Others encouraged us to look forward. Reading these messages—many of them in English—you can't help but feel the support coming from around the world. But we wished more people in Japan could hear from these supporters and feel that same sense of hope—even if the senders spoke another language.

So we had an idea: a site where people around the world could input messages for Japan in their own languages and have them automatically translated into Japanese while raising funds to help Japan. And today, we're pleased to share messagesforjapan.com. On the site, you can submit messages and have them automatically translated to Japanese by Google Translate. Of course, people who speak Japanese can also post messages in Japanese if they'd like. You can see messages on the world map, browse them in their original language or in Japanese and donate to the rebuilding effort. We're planning to deliver some of these messages to people in Japan via offline media as well.

In 1995, I was a volunteer in the disaster area following the Great Hanshin Earthquake in Kobe, Japan. After the craziness of first few weeks, I realized just how long it takes to recover from a disaster, and how important is it to rebuild not just the affected cities and towns but also people's spirits. With this recent crisis, there's no doubt that we have a long way to go. We hope that these messages from around the world will provide inspiration to the people of Japan as we face this challenge, and that the donations raised through this site and others will help the country on its road to rebuilding.

Japan is still reeling from the major natural disaster that struck a couple weeks ago. Over the few weeks, the news media and blogs have been full of images and videos showing massive damage sustained by towns in northern Japan. It is truly painful to watch.

One of the major difficulties stemming from the earthquake/tsunami, as you know, has been damage to several nuclear reactors in the vicinity of the disaster at the Fukushima power plant. The plant’s emergency backup systems seem to have functioned properly after the earthquake. The reactors immediately shut down, and backup diesel electrical generators began supplying power to the coolant pumps.

The tsunami that followed, however, damaged the diesel generators, and the result is that the reactors themselves have begun to overheat. Emergency measures are under way to cool the reactors, but the immediate vicinity has become dangerously radioactive for human beings. The Japanese are robotics experts. We need to develop better robots to cope with these kinds of situations.

I grew up, by the way, only a few miles away from a nuclear reactor. The fact is, in terms of lives lost, nuclear is far safer than other sources such as coal. Coal plants actually put more radioactive material into the environment than nuclear ones. Growing up, the only thing I remember anybody worrying about was the possibility of Fidel Castro sending a surprise strike from Cuba against the reactors. His supersonic Russian fighters are only a few minutes away from Florida, and Cuban pilots have been able to defect to U.S. airports without detection.

Right now, one of the greatest threats in Japan seems to be related to cooling ponds storing spent nuclear fuel rods at the site of the plant. These ponds are reported to be draining, and the spent rods are overheating. Like the U.S., Japan seems to prefer storing nuclear waste on-site. Looking at how an adverse reactor event can cause problems for waste fuel storage, this is a big mistake.

Simply storing nuclear waste may not be the best policy. If spent fuel rods are reprocessed, they can be used as fuel in next-generation nuclear reactors. Thorium-based fuel rods, for example, can use a “seed and blanket” design. Wastes such as plutonium are incorporated into the “seed” at the center of the rod. Burning these wastes as fuel reduces the really bad radioactive elements to a fraction of what they were originally. Of course, you also get plenty of electricity in the process.

Boiling water uranium reactors like those at Fukushima require constant cooling to prevent meltdown. However, newer designs based around thorium fuels do not need water to prevent meltdown. They require water to sustain the reaction. Remove the water coolant, and the fission reaction ceases.

The reason for this is because of the speed of the neutrons produced by the radioactive decay of the nuclear fuel. In these newer designs, water is needed to slow the neutrons down enough for them to be able to sustain a fission reaction. Without water, the neutrons are moving too fast to split atoms.

My understanding is that the first reactor to experience severe problems after the tsunami was scheduled to be taken off line two weeks after the date of the quake. If the earthquake had occurred a few weeks later, events would have been different. Two other elderly reactors at the plant had already been shut down when the disaster struck.

The Fukushima plant uses early-generation reactors that are over 40 years old. The reactors were designed to withstand an 8.2 magnitude earthquake. The Tohoku earthquake, however, was a 9 on the Richter scale, and was shortly followed by a tsunami. The fact that these ancient designs have held up so well under such unimaginably catastrophic conditions actually demonstrates that nuclear technology is safe.

We need to upgrade our reactors here in the U.S. as well. More than half of our reactors are over 50 years old. They need to be replaced with newer, safer designs. However, we are already seeing news stories about the events in Japan killing the so-called “nuclear renaissance” in the U.S. Germany has preemptively shut down many older reactors. It seems politically unlikely that we will be rolling out next-generation nuclear power here anytime soon… which I think is irrational.

Of course, this means we will turn to other sources for electricity. In a domestic environment in which new nuclear plants are not likely to be built, I suspect we will see increased use of wind turbine electricity generation.

China is planning massive growth in wind turbine installations. And, in the wake of the Fukushima meltdown, it is possible that Japan will grow domestic power generation with wind technology as well. This is an investment opportunity you don’t want to miss.

Hotpot is going Places

Last November, we introduced Hotpot, our recommendation engine to help people discover great new places when they search on Google. It's simple: Rate and review the places you know, add friends whose opinions you trust and we serve you up personalized recommendations based on those tastes.

Since then, we've released an iPhone and Android app, integrated Hotpot recommendations into Google.com and Google Maps, expanded to more than 47 languages and enabled people to share their ratings and reviews to Twitter. While busy iterating on the product side, we've also launched marketing and community campaigns in five cities in the U.S.: Portland, Ore.; Austin, Texas; Las Vegas, Nev.; Madison, Wis.; and Charlotte, N.C.

It's been incredibly exciting to watch Hotpot grow—the community has quickly expanded to millions of users who are rating more than one million times per month and enjoying a truly personalized view of the world. Based on this success, we've decided to graduate Hotpot to be a permanent part of our core local product offering, Google Places. Rolling Hotpot into Google Places helps simplify the connection between the places that are rated and reviewed and the more than 50 million places that already have an online presence through Google Places—places that millions of people search for and find every day on Google.

ITA Software acquisition cleared for takeoff

How cool would it be if you could type "flights to somewhere sunny for under $500 in May" into Google and get not just a set of links but also flight times, fares and a link to sites where you can actually buy tickets quickly and easily? Well that's exactly why we announced our intention to buy ITA Software, a Cambridge, Mass.-based company that specializes in organizing airline data last July—and we're excited that the U.S. Department of Justice today approved our acquisition.

It's important to us that ITA continue with business as usual, providing great service to its business partners. We indicated last July that we would honor ITA's existing contracts. Today we've formally committed to let ITA's customers extend their contracts into 2016. We've also agreed to let both current and new customers license ITA's QPX software on "fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms" into 2016—along with related commitments aimed at making ITA's technology available to other travel sites.

We're moving to close this acquisition as soon as possible, and then we'll start the important work of bringing our teams and products together. If the green jacket fits...

For golf enthusiasts like me, a trip to Augusta, Ga. in early April is as close as one can get to golf nirvana. The excitement begins the moment you drive down [magnolia lane] and approach the [augusta national] Clubhouse. In fact, there's probably no golf event that captures the world's attention quite like The Masters does every spring. The Masters is unique among golf tournaments since it's held in the same location each year, and after 75 years the rituals and legends have taken on a life of their own. The competitors teed off today in the opening round, so we thought it would be a good time to take a look at what people have searched for on Google about the tournament, the players and the traditions.

With a relatively small field of 93 professionals and six amateurs hailing from 22 countries, The Masters is a global event that draws interest from all over the world. We can see that each year, worldwide searches for [masters golf] peak the weekend of the tournament. The chart below shows how the trend is set to take off again this year and will likely hit its peak over the weekend.

The winner of The Masters gets to walk away with a unique prize: the prestigious green jacket—given to the lowest score in the tournament—and the game's defining garment. Every April, The Masters [green jacket] becomes one of the most sought-after article of clothing on the web as searchers turn to Google to discover the history of the jacket, seek out past winners and learn the protocols for receiving and wearing the special sport coat. Searches for [green jacket masters] have grown every year since 2004, with the highest mark occurring last year. Indeed, for a brief time in April every year, we all seem to embrace our inner couch-potato, searching for the [green jacket] more than we do for [exercise shorts]!

With some of the greatest players in the game competing, The Masters is always a thrill to watch for real golf fanatics and weekend golfers alike. The tournament is also home to some of the most memorable upset stories in sports, with lesser-known, but very skilled golfers coming out of nowhere to post the lowest score and win the tournament. Interest in these underdog stories is reflected in search query patterns across the globe. Searches for past unexpected winners like American [zach johnson] ('07), South African [trevor immelman] ('08) and Argentine [angel cabrera] ('09) all peaked globally the week of their Masters win.

So whether you're a golf fanatic, a sucker for an underdog story or—like some of my colleagues across Google—you just find the television broadcast and the golf analysts' voices the perfect background noise for an afternoon nap, there's something in the tournament for you. I'll likely be tuned into The Masters via my GoogleTV and will watch along with the rest of the world to see which golfer comes out of Sunday's trip through [amen corner] to capture the famous green jacket.

1 billion computing core-hours for researchers to tackle huge scientific challenges

Computing is an invaluable resource for advancement of scientific breakthroughs. Today we're announcing an academic research grant program called Google Exacycle for Visiting Faculty, which provides 1 billion hours of computational core capacity to researchers. That's orders of magnitude larger than the computational resources most scientists normally have access to.

This program is focused on large-scale, batch computations in research areas such as biomedicine, energy, weather and climate, earth sciences and astronomy. For example, scientists could use massive amounts of computation to simulate how pharmaceuticals interact with proteins in the human body to develop new medicines. Other uses could include simulations to predict weather patterns and analysis of telescope images to understand how the universe changes over time.

Exacycle for Visiting Faculty is part of our University Relations team's larger efforts to stimulate advances in science and engineering research. If you're a full-time faculty member, we encourage you to apply by May 31, 2011.

If you think a particular stock is going to fall, one way to make money as it falls is to short it. Simply put, to short a stock you "borrow" shares and then sell those shares at market value and pocket the proceeds. When the stock falls below the share price you sold at, you can buy back the borrowed shares at the lower price to give back to the owner (known as covering), pocketing the difference.

To short you will need to open a margin account with your broker. Your broker will arrange the delivery of the borrowed shares. There is often a ready supply of shares to be borrowed, usually owned by pension funds, mutual funds, or individual investors.

Finding the Right Stock

Finding the right stock to short can be a little bit tricky, but there are many aspects of a stock you can look at when finding the right stock to bet against. Generally, you want to make sure that the stock you are looking to short has high liquidity, which means that there are a decent number of shares being traded.

Some good signs of a short selling opportunity are when a company misses its quarterly earning estimates, its fundamentals are dwindling, sector trends are declining, or the stock is seeing high insider selling.

Too Good to Be True?

It all seems simple enough... you sell high, buy low, and then keep the difference. But there are some risks when short selling that you need to be aware of.

As I mentioned earlier, in order to start shorting, you will need to open a margin account with your broker. There may be additional margin costs involved when you are shorting the market and you will have to pay out any dividends that were paid during the time frame you were borrowing the shares.

In the case of "hard to borrow stocks," you need to also be mindful of the trading activities of the owner of the shares you are borrowing. If he decides to sell his shares before you have covered, you will have to return the shares to him by either purchasing at market value or borrowing them from somewhere else. Most importantly, unlike long investing where you can only lose what you invest, with short selling losses are hypothetically limitless. If a stock you are shorting goes up, you will have to buy shares at the current price to cover your short, resulting in a loss. A "short squeeze" can cause a rising stock with short interest to rise even higher when fellow shorters are also attempting to cover their short.

High Risk, High Reward

Most investors won't short stocks because they don't know how or because they are scared. While short selling does have high risk, you can also reap high rewards- especially in a down market. Picking the right stock to short can easily help you book fast gains. Just remember not to chase your short; set a price you will buy shares back at, and stick to it.

Bringing Google I/O direct to you with I/O Live

After Google I/O sold out in 59 minutes, we gave ourselves a challenge: bring I/O 2011 to as many developers as we could, even those that didn't have tickets to Moscone Center. So for those of you not joining us in San Francisco or at one of our I/O Extended viewing parties, visit www.google.com/io on May 10-11 from the comforts of your own home, office or anywhere you have a reliable Internet connection for I/O Live.

I/O Live will bring all of the excitement at Moscone Center to our online website, where the keynotes, sessions and Developer Sandbox will come to life for audiences all over the world. Starting on May 10, the Google I/O homepage will become the I/O Live dashboard, where you can:

Watch livestream video feeds from our two largest session rooms from 9:00 a.m PST to 6:00 p.m. PST during both days of the conference. This will include streaming of the keynotes, as in years past, as well as—new for 2011—the addition of sessions from Android and Chrome. We'll also aim to post HD video recordings from sessions that are not livestreamed within 24 hours.
Read captions from the livestreamed sessions in real-time. Plus, to make sure all our content is accessible, all remaining videos will also be captioned. For international developers, captions will be machine translated to all languages that are supported by Google Translate.
Be one of the first to know by getting your news direct from the source. The latest announcements and news will be added to our I/O Live dashboard in real-time.
Submit your questions to our Sandbox developers. We'll post answers for the questions with the most votes.

In the coming weeks, we'll update our Sessions and Sandbox pages with all the relevant information you'll need to participate in I/O Live. In the meantime, visit our temporary I/O Live page, where you can get our new HTML5 badge to display on your website and let us know that you'll be watching on May 10 and 11.

This year is slated to be our largest Google I/O event to date. So whether you're joining us in San Francisco, from an I/O Extended event, or even the comforts of your own Shangri-la, we're looking forward to seeing you at 9 a.m. PDT on May 10 as we count down to 00:00:00:00 and I/O Live.

Imagine you're a ninja, trying to master your deadly grappling hook. Or perhaps you're a chess grand master, outsmarting your opponent's every move. Or even a Taoist philosopher, explaining the deep truths of the world to your followers.

It's situations like these that you'll face in Google Code Jam, our annual coding contest in which some of the best coders from around the world write programs to solve tough algorithmic problems. We believe that one of the best ways to sharpen your coding skills and stretch them creatively is through healthy competition. The intense experience of confronting a problem, conveying your solution to your computer and seeing the results emerge is a thrill unlike any other.

Today we're opening registration for Google Code Jam 2011. Coding will begin on May 6 with our qualification round, where competitors will have as much as a day to plan their approach to our first few problems. From there, the contest heats up quickly: the remaining contestants will engage in several two-and-a-half hour rounds, wrangling each time with three to four algorithmic problems that range in difficulty from simple to fiendish. For each problem, you'll wield the programming language of your choice, crafting the perfect algorithm to pit against the gauntlet of our test data. Construct your code flawlessly and you'll be on to the next problem; solve enough problems, and you'll make your way to the next round. If you continue to succeed, you might find yourself sitting on a flight to the finals.

The challenge begins in just over a month. If you're a killer coder and you're ready to compete, sign up on our website; while you're there, make sure to check out the puzzles of the past few years to get a sense of what's to come, and to hone your skills. If you're one of the top 25 competitors, we'll bring you to our Tokyo office to spar against your fellow coders. In the end, only one person will bring home the $10,000 top prize—and the title of Code Jam Champion.

On Wednesday, China's central bank increased interest rates for the fourth time since October. The European Central Bank is expected to follow suit.

Central banks increase interest rates when they want to slow down an economy that may be overheating and generating too much inflation.

There is already a growing perception that we're nearing the end of quantitative easing and related monetary stimulus. But the central banks' rate hikes reveal a new commonly shared sentiment: fear of inflation.

Essentially, it is a huge tectonic shift in the fundamental forces that move currencies. For traders and investors, it's also a great opportunity. When a central bank changes interest rates, it creates an imbalance in capital flows. Those imbalances ripple through almost every currency traded.

As you know, money flows to where it is expected to get the best return. Obviously, it gets the best return in countries with higher interest rates. But it also helps if there's anticipation of more rate increases in the future, creating even more demand for the currency.

This is due to the "carry trade," where investors sell or borrow currencies with low interest rates and use that capital to buy currencies with higher interest rates.

The carry trade was a very big deal just a few years ago. The endless Japanese recession spurred its central bank to keep interest rates at rock-bottom levels. So borrowing yen to invest in higher-yielding currencies was an almost guaranteed way to make money.

That all changed in 2008, however, when the global financial crisis hit. Not only did other world banks start lowering their interest rates -- making the carry trade less profitable -- but borrowers also had to repatriate their capital to pay off bad debt.

Today, with central banks raising rates, the carry trade looks ready to make a comeback. As a trader, you'll need to know when it has begun in earnest... and how to participate in this powerful force.

Luckily, monitoring the carry trade is easy. Just watch the iPath Optimized Currency Carry ETN (NYSE:ICI). This exchange-traded note (similar to an exchange-traded fund) uses the carry trade as an investment discipline. Any gains in ICI reflect a strengthening carry trade.

From a technical perspective, ICI is now forming a triple top at $47 - a key indicator. If it breaks above this price, it's a clear signal that the carry is back!

Now, how do you prepare for it?

First, the Japanese yen will once again be a good target for carry traders. The terrible earthquake and tsunami sparked sudden yen buying -- which is bad for the carry trade -- but that was a temporary psychological reaction. With rebuilding a priority, Japan favors a weaker yen, and the G7 nations agree, taking action to keep the yen from gaining value.

As a result, the Australian dollar/Japanese yen (AUDJPY) and euro/yen (EURJPY) crosspairs will receive the benefits of bullish sentiment.

Also, if G7 rates continue increasing in the coming months, the Brazilian real will become more vulnerable to a sell off. Even though Brazil's interest rates are at an astronomical level of 11.75%, a change in its differential with other currencies may be the tipping point for weakening this currency.

Let's not forget the U.S. dollar. It is still a low-yielding currency and may also suffer from the carry trade effect. In other words, traders may push the dollar's value down as they sell greenbacks and purchase other currencies.

But that's a very tentative situation. If Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke signals that quantitative easing is not likely to be extended, or signals vigilance on inflation, traders may anticipate a rate hike.

The topic is already on the Fed's mind. In fact, you can see it visually in a fairly new type of analysis called a "word cloud." Simply put, I took the text of the Fed's meeting minutes from March and used special software to reveal patterns in the document:

Clearly the word "inflation" came up a lot... and that doesn't bode well for low interest rates. Still, we won't know for sure until the next Fed meeting.

So for now, the best bet is to keep an eye on the ICI, anticipate a falling yen and watch the Brazilian real very closely.

These moves could make a huge difference for long-term currency investors.
