A group of three SLP/SLPA work as a team to provide services to
students at a school site. As inferred from the above table, a total of
thirty-six students receive therapy services simultaneously in three different centers/locations [Speech
room /SDC Classroom /Resource Specialist room] within a school site.

Benefits
of this approach:

1 The SLP team provides therapy services
to a group of students in a short time [in this example –90 minutes or an hour
and half of therapy per SLP] as compared to a longer therapy duration [e.g 9
groups x 30 minutes each = 270 minutes or four and half hours] when therapy is
provided by a single SLP.

2.A therapist works only with three
groups / twelve students per site, thus able to prepare high quality/effective therapy tools and deliver quality therapy.

3. If a team member is out sick or busy
at evaluations/IEP meetings, the rest of the team can share the caseload thus
delivering therapy services without interruption.

4. There is a high Medi-Cal reimbursement
because students receive therapy services consistently as mandated.

5.Students can return to their classes on
time to attend core instructions/ class activities.

6.Parents have expressed satisfaction
over this approach as their children receive therapy services consistently.

7.The students receive therapy from three
specialists who have specialization /expertise in different treatment
approaches. Exposure to various therapy approaches ensures successful
acquisition of target skills in a shorter time.

8. The team can travel up to three
different school sites on a given day to provide services to a large group of
students. Services are provided twice a week to students. Hence, the SLPs get
three full days for diagnostic assessments and other intervention services.

9. The teachers / paraprofessionals who
come with students during the sessions learn a variety of strategies from each
SLP.

10. As a team, we believe that “Together Everyone Achieves More”.

Hello,
  Happy Valentine's Day !!

1. I have compiled a few resources that SLPs can use to assess Children with complex communication needs (CCN) http://slpreference.blogspot.com/2012/02/assessment-of-children-with-multiple.html
2. What Is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a way of learning to be more purposeful in attending
to your everyday experience. It refers to being “in the moment,”
observing your presence in the world in a nonjudgmental and experiential
way. True mindfulness is a gentle approach of focusing your attention
to the present. It should never feel forced or as though you are trying
to direct your thoughts to anything in particular.

3. Great information on Core Vocabulary !

4. I enjoy following the dadlab blog ! This dad has so many creative ideas that you can use in your therapy sessions.
Class helps locals lose their Boston accent

So, I bought a couple of clickers to use with students in the articulation program today. Similar to the video, I incorporated a simple game where the student hears "a click" for incorrect productions and "no click" for correct productions. Students were thrilled and they practiced until they got the target sound in isolation and at word level -i.e., no clicks for producing the target sounds correctly. Their performance increased dramatically in just this one session !

********************************************************************
I searched the internet to see whether anyone else has been using Clickers in therapy. I came across this concept called " TAGteach" - Teaching with Acoustical Guidance

"TAGteach is a teaching and communication method based on the scientific
principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). TAGteach enables
extremely precise positive reinforcement of a behavior by using an
acoustical signal to notify a child that he/she has done something
correctly, at the precise moment he/she performs the behavior. The
acoustical signal is a short, sharp sound made by a handheld device (the
“tagger”). When the child performs the correct action, the
parent/instructor immediately presses the button on the tagger and hands
over a treat (candy, treat, token, praise, social recognition, or
money) as a reinforcer.'

http://www.tagteach.com/What_is_TAGteach

http://tagteachblog.com/

www.behaviorbabe.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=164982419

Click or acoustical marker. Way to humanize the approach? Use non
traditional acoustical markers (snapple lids, pen clicks, iPhone apps)
as well as emphasis on human applications: gymnasts and Olympians.
(TAGteach is trademarked.) Theresa McKeon: "TAGteach is not
clickertraining - it is a registered Trademarked name of an entire
application that works more with the teacher's ability to be clear about
criteria. When the teacher is clear, the student benefits. It provides
protocols to help teachers break behavior down into individually
teachable moments, highlight the moment for the learner and instantly
reinforce that behavior. You may choose to mark the behavior with a
word, "yes" or a sound that does not bring about unwanted social
responses until the learner has had time to process the behavior they
just performed. Some use sounds from a cell phone (tagtone: a blackberry
app developed by Dr. Karen McClean who uses it to teach medical doctor
students). The actual clicker is not the application. A clicker is not
something that trains animals or people. The clicker is something that
makes a sound.
Happy November !

I'd like to share a few interesting SLP info in this newsletter :)

1. I attended a wonderful workshop by Dr. Greg Lof on Evidence Based Practices in SLP. He spoke about "Quackery in SLP" -from snake oil to speech pills to treat communication disorders- and how we, as SLP Clinicians, need to be cognizant about various therapies which thrives on false promises and patient testimonials.

I searched further on the internet about "Controversial Practices in Health Care/SLP" and came across this blog by Tatyana Elleseff MA CCC-SLP Read more : )
2. I often hear our clinicians use a few Autism related terms loosely. Here is a blog on Autism Vocabulary 101. Please review and familiarize yourself with the terminologies.

3. Here is a quick review of People First Terminologies to use when you address individuals with Down Syndrome.

4. I came across this blog by Sarah Wu on Top 20 Websites to Use in Spanish Speech Therapy
The websites listed can be very helpful when you work with bilingual Spanish-English speaking kids.

5. Have you paid your ASHA Dues yet ? Here is a quick review of ASHA Member benefits.

Happy Thanksgiving ! Thank you for all that you do for our clients & their families :)
I usually share information about "Chores by age" to parents of children with exception needs, and emphasize about the related language aspects (sequencing, following directions) required to complete a chore/ADL .

I came across this wonderful blog on ASHA Leader early this week :

http://blog.asha.org/2016/10/04/12-skills-and-5-household-chores-that-can-serve-as-preparation-for-future-vocation/

This article reinforces what I have been sharing with parents in the clinic. Read and do share information about age appropriate chores for your pediatric clients, and prepare them to be Independent adults.
Hello Team, Happy October !

I have a few interesting SLP stuff to share in this newsletter :)

1. Have you subscribed to ADVANCE SLP e-magazine ? You'll find interesting therapy ideas and new research snippets in this magazine.
http://speech-language-pathology-audiology.advanceweb.com/

2. Are you working on Social Skills goals but unable to find appropriate materials ? Look up http://myeverydayspeech.com/ for unique social skills videos, iPad apps and free worksheets. https://everydayspeechsocialskillsvideos.vhx.tv/
https://itunes.apple.com/us/developer/everyday-speech/id772244052

3. Looking for specific Articulation Word lists ? https://goo.gl/PGY8KO has word lists sorted by place-manner of articulation.

4. Please introduce theme based language activities in your sessions. Some examples include Fall theme, Halloween, Pumpkins,Costumes, etc., Have fun !

5. Have you been watching TV shows in your free time ? If you can, check out the new series 'Speechless' on ABC. http://blog.asha.org/2016/09/27/a-word-about-the-new-show-speechless/

6. Here is another video on 'Parents' Reaction to the Diagnosis' from Parenthood. So touching ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3HpvjZS4kQ

You just watched the parent's emotions upon receiving a diagnosis. As professionals, we become a part of their children's lives. Please listen to your parents, and when needed, do empathize with them. Also, please be sure to use ' People First Language' when you communicate with your parents. (e.g., A child with a diagnosis of Down Syndrome- Not a Down's kid) .
https://goo.gl/ankTal

Thank you & Enjoy the Season !

Hello everyone ! Happy August :)
Please review the articles below to learn about bilingualism.

Dear SLP Staff,

1. Just a gentle reminder: Please invite your client's parents to join you
during therapy sessions. Also, bring your parents to your room to share
the session update. Please refrain from sharing the session information in
the hallways or in the presence of other parents (Due to patient privacy
compliance).

2. Do engage your little clients (1-5 year olds) with a variety of hands
on language based activities. They do enjoy colorful arts & craft language
activities. Immerse your clients in theme based vocabulary and language
during such activities. Providing multimodal input enhances learning
skills.

3. Hello Summer ! Do introduce seasonal/summer based language activities
with your clients. Parents can also reinforce the language skills during
outdoor summer activities with their children (e.g., visit to swimming
pool, ice cream shop)

Hello Team,
       Happy Spring !
Just wanted to let you all know that you're providing awesome therapy
support services to our little kids. Keep up your good work !

Just a few reminders for this month:

1. Please continue to share as much information about the child's
participation on your SOAP Note. Review and follow the
rubric on 'Levels of Cueing' so that we all have a common understanding
and reporting of the level of cues/prompts required for eliciting the
child's performance on a specific goal.

http://thethriftyslp.blogspot.com/2012/06/levels-of-cuing.html

2. Please be creative and provide as much hands on experience to children
when you work on specific goals. Utilize movement & language and arts &
crafts in your language based activities. Keep your child excited about
attending therapy !

3. It is a good idea to initiate a reward sticker chart or a treasure
chest for your clients. They can 'earn a prize' for their best performance
or when they meet the target goal.

Wishing you a great month ahead !

Just a few reminders for this month :

1. Please do continue to input as much information on your SOAP note.
Also, add comments from parents about their child's progress that they
have seen over the past months, as well as their concerns. We can address
the parent concerns as we develop new goals for the child.

2. I thought I would share Jenna Rayburn's Speech Room News Website in
this newsletter. Her website has wonderful resources including great
therapy ideas.
Check out this post on SLP blog resource list:
http://thespeechroomnews.com/slp-blog-resource-list

3. Please continue to address goals via hands-on craft based language
activities. Kids learn best when provided with multi sensory input. The
take home mini projects help parents to reinforce the learned skills in
their home setting.

4. Do introduce monthly themes as appropriate via hands on/craft
activities as you address the goals. We have a lot of events happening
this month - Spring, Easter, St.Patrick's Day, Pi Day (3/14), World Down
Syndrome Day (3/21). It is important that children gain world knowledge in
their early developmental years. Be Creative !

5. Finally, Our SLP team is always available to answer any questions on
documentation, therapy approaches, etc.,. Please stop by any of our rooms
and just ask your questions.

Wishing you a productive month ahead !

Thank you!

Happy February !

1. Some of our parents ask for home practice worksheets. Please do honor
their requests and share home practice worksheets that are relevant to the
goals. It is important for the child to carryover and generalize the
learned skills outside of the therapy setting.

Here are a few resources for worksheets:

http://blog.asha.org/2016/02/09/making-worksheets-fun-and-functional/

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/ to download free worksheets.

2.Engage your little kids in various play based activities. Be aware of
their attention span and keep the fun in therapy with a variety of hands
on language based games.

http://blog.asha.org/2013/09/03/planning-a-play-based-therapy-session/

3. Do encourage parent participation in therapy. They need to learn a few
strategies to help their child communicate in their home setting. Also,
please do advise parents to bring in other service providers such as ABA
therapists to your session.
