In the past days I had my second anniversary of intensive "militancy" here at the Swamp. So I grew even older!
It has been an incredible experience for me I would have never thought to do.
But it has been huge fun ...

So I want to say a huge THANK YOU to Cheeto, who has been a solid, granitic reference point for these years.
It has been a honour to become part of this great and warm Cat-dominated community made of my team mates, the bloggers, the many nice visitors and the cool people from the bands.
In this community I found many nice and cool friends from everywhere in the world, and even from my country, that I wouldn't have met otherwise.
Not to speak about the so many incredible bands and tunes I got to know through the Swamp and through the precious contributions of the visitors!
Links are established and will remain alive.

In spite of my being "nasty old witch", I want to post some hot and happy music.
So my last post stems from the last suggestion of one of the most popular and craziest Swamp friends, He, the One and Only Oz Devil, PSYMIN.

In the c-box Psymin drop a Swedish raaaawk bomb, Alonzo.

I am aware that our friend Sludgelord had made a post about Alonzo long time ago in his cool blog. Chapeau!
But, my bad, I was so dumb that I missed it ...
Luckily Psymin helped in reminding us about Alonzo rockers, also thanks to a suggestion from another faithful Swedish friend of ours, Mats a.k.a. Norrlandsguld.

Alonzo are full-fat Swedish raaaaawk, for those "who are into KYUSS, Monster Magnet, Blue Cheer and Clutch", and I love it!

These rockers share their two albums for free on their myspace page (megaupload links, easy), so don't miss them.

As to the rest of us, we'll keep in touch ...

Check the Alonzo rockers here

If you are lazy get their albums here:

Alonzo - [2009] Alonzo

Alonzo - [2010] Salmonidae

Mellow Out..............

Well since this will be my last post on the Swamp, I'd thought I'd offer some good 70's based southern r-n-r by a Boston band called Mellow Bravo. They have some pretty easy to digest music. Not to complicated, simple and to the point music. Well worth it.

I'd like to take this moment to thank Cheeto for allowing me to be part of the team. It was an honor and pleasure to do so. I'd like to thank all the other team members past and present for turning me onto some pretty righteous bands, I wouldn't be doing what I do today with you. Last I'd like to thank all the visitors to the site for making this a fun and interesting place to go to share our love for music. Without you, this site would not have become what it was. Their sound is close to the almighty High On Fire, Bison BC, very early Mastodon. Punsihing, brutal metallic sludge with giant riff, wild drums and gritty vocals. Yummy.

Buy It On The Music Lover's Garden Of Delights: http://netherregions.bandcamp.com/album/into-the-breach

Feel The Love: http://tinyurl.com/6zj4tms

Summer and sludge sound sooo well together ....

... so no wonder that such a pairing has been used to make a juicy cool compilation at the webzine American Aftermath.
I particularly like the spirit of this compilation because it is a bit like the Swamp Comp: it is made to promote unsigned and emerging bands that make killer music.
So let's spread the news!
Btw, check out the webzine as there's more to download ...

Here is the text of the post about the SUMMER OF SLUDGE COMPILATION at the webzine's page and the tracklist:

"We here at American Aftermath are pleased to bring you a compilation titled Summer of Sludge.
What is this compilation all about? Well, if you can’t tell by the name, it is a compilation filled with unsigned or relatively unknown sludge metal bands from all over the world. I personally got ahold of these bands to inquire them being a part of this in an effort to expand their music to fans who, otherwise, might not have found them.
They are all amazing band with loads of talent. In this compilation you will find 10 tracks, totaling an hour of juicy, thick sludge. After the jump you can view the track list and download the album! Also, keep your eyes peeled because it’s a Two-For-Tuesday here at American Aftermath! We will be releasing a killer grindcore compilation very soon!

TRACK LIST:

1. Wizard’s Beard – “Paint The Skies”
2. Android Empire – “From Fire to Flood”
3. Hawkmoth – “Dead Chamber”
4. Tree of Sores – “God Theory”
5. Undersmile – “Crab People”
6. Dopethrone – “Dark Foil”
7. The Lion’s Daughter – “The Horror of Existence”
8. Beastwars – “Damn The Sky”
9. Norska – “Cholera”
10. Eibon – “Entering Darkness”

Thanks to the guys/gals in mighty Wizard's Beard and Undersmile for providing this cool hint on Fabebook!
\m/ \m/ \m/

And thanks to the webzine American Aftermath (here)!

Press here to go to the download page

Splitting The Atom Through Psychedelics...

Look at the swampers crying! C'mon fellas, things will be alright.... Let's play some music.

Made the discovery thanks to the genius eye of The Soda Shop.

Behind the unassuming artwork you get some mammoth sized heavy psych, which worships the jam love and the trippy ways but doesnt forget the giant, low end drenched, riffs. The guitar touch is worthy Of Sleep, but the melodies, the clean vocals, the acis solos, the trippy tunes are all firmly rooted into 60's and 70's psych rock. Go for it.

MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/marsredsky

Feel The Love: http://tinyurl.com/6cnyr7z

OMG, I was almost forgetting …

<img style="display: block; 01 - Forsaken - Neon Knights.mp3
02 - Memory Garden - Country Girl.mp3
03 - Berenice - Letters from Earth.mp3
04 - Last Chapter - Children of the Sea.mp3
05 - Mood - Lonely Is the Word.mp3
06 - The Tempter - Falling of the Edge of the World.mp3
07 - Leaf - After All (The Dead).mp3
08 - Seasons of the Wolf - Buried Alive.mp3
09 - Syris - Wishing Well.mp3
10 - Mesmerize - Die Young.mp3

And, again, GreenCarnation provided some amazing cover art, front and back (ok, he wasn't the one who did it, as he duly informed, but it looks cool anyway!).

Once more thanks a lot, GreenCarnation!

<a style="font-weight: bold; His death was confirmed earlier in the evening by his publicist.

Putnam was more an agent provocateur than a standard frontman, and his brand of hyperspeed screaming and decidedly politicially incorrect content garnered him an equal number of fans and detractors. AC's albums were best known for their offensive and satirical song titles that numbered upwards of 50 per release (their songs averaged a minute a piece). Many of the songs decried different people and activities as "gay", and prominent figures in the metal underground were regular targets.

In 2004, Putnam overdosed on a two-month supply of Ambien in what proved to be a failed suicide attempt, and he instead had a stroke that put him into a coma and left him walking with a cane once he recovered. He slowly worked his way back into performing live, at first by sitting in a lawn chair while performing vocals.

The details of Mr. Putnam's death are unclear at press time, but it seems likely that the vicious toll he took on his body was ultimately the culprit. While he may not be universally mourned, it's fair to say that the world of extreme music will be less colorful without him." I sure wish I could contribute more but why dwell on that right now. Today I have a fairly small metal band out of Fort Collins Colorado, Immortal Dominion. I can't say I know all that much about them. In fact, up until right now when I was looking for some info on them I did not even know they were still together. I used to see them in Colorado back in the late 90's early 2000's. I bought these two from them at the shows. I was pleasantly suppressed to see that they have since released 2 more full length albums. I just ordered "Awakening" from 2005 right before I posted this and I can't wait to hear it. I saw they also have a brand new one "Primortal" but so far I can only find it in digital format. I will have to contact them for a proper CD, should they even exist.

Anyways, Immortal Dominion "is a powerhouse of heavy, driving metal that features their own unique and catchy rhythms and has an appeal that crosses genres and audiences." (according to the wikipedia) They certainly do cross a few metal sub-genres. Thrash, Death and Speed to name a few. There is a bit of everything thrown in and they do it well. Their current line up consists of: Brian Villers (Guitars, Backing Vocals), Ray Smith (Lead Vocals, Guitar), Brian "Edward" Schmidt (Bass), Louie Micciullo (Guitar) and Casey Glass (Drums). They have done mostly shows out on the West coast but have opened for such bands as D.R.I., Vader, Fear Factory (who I saw last night along with (hed)PE and Mushroomhead) and Neurosis among others.

All I know is that I have been involved in a CD listening project for over a year now (listening to all mine in order Chronologically A-Z). I am currently in the I's and figure y'all had to hear these guys. There are many other recent ones I have jammed out like Honcho Overload, HUM and Idea Men that may hold some attention here too but for now... This is their first EP "Birth" from 96 and their first full Length from 98 "Endure". Both are quite enjoyable. I see they were also involved in the soundtrack to indie film TEETH that I have never seen but came out in 2007. Looks like I need to find that too now...

ANY FELLOW EURO-SWAMPERS HIT ME UP!!! I will be coming over next week for Hell Fest (June 17-19) in France and then bouncing around Europe a couple weeks ( I fly out of Rome the 30th) and would love to meet up with as many "friends" as possible along the way. Email me at cheesusrules@gmail.com and let me know if we can meet for a beer, show or just to hang out. (I could also use places to stay but I won't hold anyone to that :)

Official Site: http://www.immortaldominion.net/

MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/immortaldominion

Check out their BIRTH and try to EDURE it: http://tinyurl.com/3mk7k3j

Core of Destruction and the witch ...

<img style="display: block; They got a bit too mainstream and radio friendly with this one, but it aint necessarily a bad thing.

Electric Earth play basically Hard Rock inspired by Led Zeppelin, Sabbath, Thin Lizzy with an alt rock twist that puts them also in the same department as Soundgarden (lot of those) and Alice In Chains. As i mentioned, their earlier stuff (available on the swamp) was way more hard and heavy, where this album is clearly trying to win over the airwaves. Still the riffs are there and the melodies are great. I wish there were more bands like this on the radio....

Their Page: http://www.electricearth1.com/

Feel the Love (re upped): http://tinyurl.com/6almglu

I am a shameful witch …

Andrea is a shameless man, he says, and I believe him! Lol …
Well, it will be cool to hear Andrea the Wizard interacting with Soggybog on his latest podcast issue! Not to be missed!!!

As to me, I am a shameful, exceedingly shy witch. What do you expect from someone living in a cave with bats and eating from a cauldron?
But I must be rather crazy as I sometimes happily or foolishly jump into the “unknown”, into situations very distant from my character! And, well, it’s fun!
Like with blogging, and like with the latest madness, the involvement with Core of Destruction Radio.

About at the end of April, I had announced my involvement with Core of Destruction Radio after invitation by Lizard Messiah.
Initially I have been acting only as a provider of some tunes for playlists that Lizard Messiah kindly hosted during in his show, Stoned Insanity.
I was blushing at the sole idea of speaking in the mic even if alone in a room!

Then I had a further attack of craziness and yielded to Lizard Messiah’s words inviting me to try dj-ing.
So I tried: bought a mic and, panic attack after panic attack, learnt how to make up a show (I’m very primitive …).

So, folks, to make things short, I’ve got my own “show” on Core of Destruction Radio, it is called “Mari’s Cauldron”, it covers various genres, and it is shot on air every two weeks on friday 5pm central/6pm eastern US time.

My first, debut show was on the last Friday of May, next one will be on friday June 10th, i.e. TOMORROW!!!!!

Last time I basically didn’t tell almost anybody about my debut as I was too ashamed.
This time Lizard Messiah gave me the “homework”: to advertise the show decently!
So there it is:

Mari’s Cauldron on friday 5pm central/6pm eastern US time - on Core of Destruction Radio.
Or listen at this link: http://s9.myradiostream.com/8820.htm

For those who won’t be able to connect, an mp3 version of the show will be made available, on the Facebook page of Core of Destruction, for example.

N.B.: please note that in the upcoming show I inserted some tracks from brand new albums. But two tracks in particular were kindly provided by two very cool bands, Threefold Law and Zippo.

In the meantime I shall post here the mp3 version of the very first show.
Mamma mia, how raw and primitive …
I spoke in the bloody mic … many many times … I should have improved a wee bit, but I still hate my voice …
Don’t snore too loud when listen to my spoken parts! Just ignore them and listen to the tunes, which are the most important part of the show.

Remember to check out also all the other, killer shows on Core of Destruction Radio, and done properly by experienced folks: Swampchode, Lizard Messiah, Chivo, Teabag Stallone, and all the other djs!

Again, thanks to Lizard Messiah for involving me and for being such a patient lizard ...

California dooming …

I am sure many of you who are addicted to doooooom with a lot of “oooooo” and a long “m” at the end, had been caught by the glowing review and enthusiastic upgrades Ed had written about US band Amarok on Doommantia (here and here).

Amarok is a very young band from Chico, Northern California. Four guys, and apparently four beards, are involved:
Brandon - Bass / Vocals / Half Beard,
Kenny - Guitar / Vocals / Full Beard,
Zeke - Drums / Red Beard,
Jeremy - Guitar / Vocals / Standard Beard

I guess Amarok guys, as well as the other extreme/black metal bands sharing this name, have chosen this name which means “wolf” in Inuit mythology (as wiki duly reports).
"Our" Amarok here is no black metal stuff but these guys have no problem in mastering grim and gloomy and skin-peeling tunes.

According to their bio, Jeremy and Brandon (also in The Makai band) started playing together and founded Amarok eventually in 2010 as soon as they found the "right tone" and the right people into "slow and loud" music as they were.

The band is devoted to a mammoth-paced, down-tuned, sometimes catacumbal sludgy/drony doom metal with multiple painful, torn, barely human vocals. In Amarok's style of dooooom extremely down-tuned, distorted, almost "granular" guitar sounds develop via monolithic, hypnothic when not suffocating, riffs rambling over a carpet of almost ritualistic drumming.
Those tunes invade your ears, and nostrils and lungs and anything like molasse, or even like molten glass ...
Here I am describing the "thing" in this way because I am an old witch but after all I am a "lady".
You should go and read Amarok beards' description of their own tunes, and side effects on listeners, as reported on their myspace page! I just mention how they sum it up: "Sodomy by doom metal", and they are four of them, sweaty and hairy, lol ...

Doom and gloom in Amarok are surely evoked via dark atmospheres but they do not sound glacial, impersonal, mind-warping or hopelessly mournful like in drone or funeral doom. These guys sweat Sabbathian doom from their pores, plus they must have some swampy blood in their veins, because there are tons of groove in Amarok.
So it comes almost natural to recall, like Ed did in his monumental review, bands like Khanate, Weedeater, Burning Witch and Grief when listening to Amarok.
Amarok's doom is glacier-slow but dynamic, alive and, from my point of view, is great fun!

I guess many people like to be blown away, or I should say "sodomized", by Amarok, as these guys have been having a great success in their 2010 tour across western USA with bands including Weedeater, Thou, Samothrace, Cough, Zoroaster, Dark Castle, Red Fang, Rosetta, etc..
They also spent the whole month of April 2011 in a full-immersion tour all over USA.

Today bassist/vocalist Brandon has contacted a few of us bloggers with some cool news.

First of all let’s refresh the memory about the fact that you can get Amarok’s album as free download, with the option of a donation, on the website of label Orca Wolf Records (here).

The HQ download is the digital version of the two-track vinyl LP released via Orca Wolf Records. The physical LP can be purchased, and I guess it must be very cool with that great graphical art.
Self-released CD and tape versions of the album are also available which include a third track (III) in addition to the two previous monumental tracks of the LP (simply called I and II).

But further juicy news are about up-coming releases and another tour in October 2011, unfortunately only in the US West Coast, together with band Protestant from Milwakee.

As to the up-coming releases, Amarok guys must be very busy as they are involved in
- a split with doom monsters Cough
- a split with cool doom-sludge act H.C. Minds
- a split with scary blackened sludge-drone-doom band Hell

Mamma mia ...
So, folks, keep this band under your radar and support these bearded maniacs!

Check this unshaved band (and their own naughty definitions) on myspace and on facebook for news and the CD/tape release

Get the LP tunes (and, please, do support the band) from here

(Brandon & friends, thanks for the news and for sharing the tunes!)

I'm a shameless man...

I am an attention whore and i was also authorized by The Great Mari, so i will push this.

The shiny and amazing podcast The Soggy Bog Of Doom, which has always been a great supporter of the swamp, Doommantia and all that is Doomy, is guesting me this week for a tiny and embarassing review spot. Actually i have only listened to it once, fro now, but i'm pretty sure that this 100 pound riffing beast will be in my top ten list for the year. And definitely one of the major surprises.

The sound is pure, slaying, riff rock in the spirit of Clutch, Fu Manchu, Orange Goblin (or as our own Fra said, Mendozza) or more genrally just perfect, destructive, groovy Megaton Riff Rock, with gruff, testicle dripping voclas, bass/ drums that pund your skull into the floor, alcohol fueled melodies and guitars the size of an angry giant gorilla. As they say: groovy heavy, epic.

Played at the right volume (which is OFFENSIVELY LOUD) this animal will make your neck break, and your body fly into an angry seizure.

Say Hi To The Guys: http://www.borrachomusic.com/

Buy It Here (for now): http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/borracho

Feel The Love: http://tinyurl.com/62jatk8

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sludgeswamp.blogspot.com/2011/06/album-of-year-well.html' title='Album Of The Year? I wouldnt be surprised if i saw the band playing on their stage soon (if they didnt do it already).

Their sound is basically a thunderous Heavy Psych, with amostly instrumetal passages and a couple vocal bits. The style is as retro as it gets: stuff in the vein of Earthless and Oresund Space Collective, also heavily influenced by classic psych rock from the 60's and 70's, kozmik stuff and early classic Kraut (they played with the almighty Damo Suzuki on their first gig, that would be enough to make every connoisseur's jaw drop in awe). Fuzzy, Acid, Groovy Stuff, but also full of that slightly weird vibe that classic Acid Rock had.

Check Their Page: http://www.crumblingghost.blogspot.com/

Feel The Love: http://tinyurl.com/66hsgc9

Dark Times...

After the sweet warmth of southern blues rock, time to get back to mean, bleak stuff.

Black Majesty deliver some ferocious and visceral Blackened Sludge. Imagine a mix of Stoner Riffage, Punkish Snarl (theres a loud cover of a Dead Boys song to say one), Metallic destruction, all mixed up with a singer that has both a Lemmy attitude and a Danzig-esque animal magnetism and you'll get an idea. Powerful bunch of ass kicking tunes.

Their MySpace is meh, check their ReverbNation Page: http://www.reverbnation.com/mechanicsofthings

Feel The Love: http://tinyurl.com/5rvwzm7
