<p>In business it often seems that there is never enough time to get everything done. And really there probably isn’t. That’s why it’s important to take time for yourself. Both for your mental and physical health. Because over time your body will slowly wear down. You’ll slowly become more and more fatigued. You won’t sleep well and you won’t think straight. If your business is going through a rough time then your problems can become exasperated. And that can make it even harder to recover from them.<br><br>Assuming you haven’t waited to long to do something about them what then can you do? For starters because your physical health should always be a concern why not go get a checkup. Even if you don’t have health insurance you should get this done. Although as a small business owner you should have some sort of coverage at least for yourself. Try to go to the doctor’s at least once a year for a checkup. Hopefully they can catch any developing problems in the early stages.<br><br>An even better long term solution is for you to go to a gym. The point is to get your mind off your business for just a moment. Doing so for at least a short while each day should help to keep your batteries charged and your mind fresh. That way when you do return to the office you’ll be ready to tackle the next problem head on instead of at half speed. Remember your own health should be your number one item on the agenda.</p>

<p>It is really amazing how hard a time people have being honest and forthright with each other. But people have a hard time saying what they really mean to other people. You could call it beating around the bush but what is really going on is that people often lack the ability to speak with candor. That is people don’t say what they really want to. In business this can be especially true and counterproductive.</p>



<p>Let’s give an example of someone who lacks the ability to speak with candor. You’ve just been called into a meeting with your company’s department heads. You are going to review the latest quarter’s sales figures. You know for a fact they could have been much better had a few new initiatives been implemented. Ideas that had been brought up in the previous quarter’s meeting but never pursued.</p>



<p>The meeting gets under way and as each department head goes over their results a theme emerges. Sales growth across the company has been stagnant. And one by one each manager blames the current business climate for their woes. Once they are done the boss congratulates them on being able to tough it out. Everyone leaves the meeting patting each other on the back.</p>



<p>In this little example company executives are ignoring reality. If people had been willing to be more candid with each other then they would have acknowledged that the achieved results were not satisfactory. Someone would have spoken up and said “What can we do differently or better to get the results we need?” Your boss would have looked each manager in the eye and said “This isn’t cutting it.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>Your meeting shouldn’t be about ripping each other apart either. What’s needed in business is open and honest dialogue. Most people hate conflict of any kind. No matter how much people seem to actually fight with one another conflict doesn’t come naturally. In business people want to avoid it but sometimes a little constructive conflict is necessary to put the wheels of progress into motion.</p>



<p>You have to be able to ask yourselves hard questions. What can we do differently to stimulate growth? What employees do we have that are unproductive? Are there products that just aren’t selling? How can we get more out of our production? There are so many questions that can be asked in business. Often though people have a problem accepting the facts of a given situation.</p>



<p>If you want your employees to start acting in a more candid manner you need to encourage them. First off you need to practice it yourself. Then you need to reward employees that are willing to be candid too. You have to show them that it is ok to be forthright and straightforward about business. Otherwise the employees within your business or organization will only be fooling themselves about the truth. Allowing candor to prosper in your organization will be like breathing in a breath of fresh air.</p>

And because you are already giving up your profit margin you probably can’t sell your products or services any cheaper than you already are. But your competitors may be able to as they may have deeper resources than you.</p>



<p>Before considering an under pricing strategy to win customers you need to thoroughly examine how low you can go until you hit your break even point. You also need to examine how long such a strategy can be allowed to go on. In addition you will need another strategy that will allow you to at some point raise your prices to a more acceptable level without losing the customers you worked so hard to gain. <p>Everyone has seen promotional products before. They come in many forms. From tee-shirts, pens, and calendars, to coffee mugs, book bags and bumper stickers. And companies give them away left and right for free. But why exactly do they do it? For one because it is a great way to get the name of your business out into the market and for another it helps your customers to remember who you are.</p>



<p>So how did such promotional products get started anyway? Well the earliest known use of such promotional products actually dates back to the election of George Washington as President of the United States in 1789. During the election commemorative buttons were used as giveaways. Throughout the 1800’s other items such as calendars, rulers and products made from wood were also used as promotional giveaways. But for most of the century there really was no organization that dealt with such products.</p>



<p>Eventually though an enterprising owner of a small printing company named Jasper Meeks struck upon the idea of imprinting the name of a business on some school bags. He then went out to a local shoe store and convinced them to let him print the name of the shoe store on the bags and the shoe store then gave the bags to the school. Soon after another rival printer within the same town of Coshocton, Ohio named Henry Beach saw what Jasper Meeks was doing and the race was on.</p>



<p>Together these two men would start up what would become a whole new form of business within the advertising industry. By 1912 the first trade association would be formed by twelve such businesses from across the country. The industry which today is known as the Advertising Specialty Institute has some 7,500 members.</p>



<p>The industry itself is actually fairly fragmented. There are over 18,000 such distributors across the country that buy their products from roughly 2,000 suppliers. The distributors buy their products from the suppliers and then customize them to meet the end users needs. They print the names of customers business, addresses, phone numbers and logos on any number of products and in just about any quantities that are needed.</p>



<p>Around 95% of the businesses in the industry average annual sales of less than 2.5 million dollars but the industry as a whole accounts for over 18 billion dollars in sales annually. Which is an extremely large chunk of the advertising industry’s overall sales each year. For someone that aspires to become an entrepreneur this might be a good opportunity for you. The barriers to entry are fairly low but beware there is a lot of competition which can make it difficult to make your mark.</p>

<p>We all know there is no such thing as a perfect customer. But sometimes your customer can become downright impossible to deal with. It is when you get these types of customers that you must learn to say enough is enough and if necessary drop them.</p>



<p>You spend a lot of time, energy, and money developing new customer relationships. Many times you will find this to be a rewarding experience for you. You might develop relationships that will last years into the future. Some of your customers may become close friends of yours. All in all a very enjoyable experience for you. But sometimes the exact opposite happens and depending on how badly you need the business of that customer it can become a nightmare for you. That is when you might have to ask yourself just how badly do you need them?</p>



<p>It is during the early stages of building your business that every customer really counts but at some point in time you need to examine your relationships with you customers. You need to ask yourself if all the hoops you jump through for them are actually worth the sales that you receive. You might be surprised by how many aren’t. Does this mean you should drop them all as customers no? In fact it would be better if you could figure out a way to make the relationship more fruitful for you. But when you do realize that a customer is simply not worth the effort that you are giving them then you need to drop them.</p>



<p>Yes it is hard giving up on a relationship that you have worked so hard to develop but it needs to be done. This customer is taking up valuable time and resources by distracting you from the customers that you make money on. And the longer you wait to do something about the situation the more it is costing you. So how do you go about ending a relationship? Politely that’s how.</p>



<p>When ending a relationship with a customer there is no need to be rude to them or have them develop any hard feelings towards you. You simply need to explain the situation to them. No they may not like it. But you have to try and be truthful with them. Don’t be fooled by them if they say that they need you and will work harder on their end to improve things because this is often not the case. There are of course times when a relationship is worth salvaging and you’ll have to make that decision yourself. But try not to let past sentiment be an influencing factor no matter how hard.</p>



<p>Developing good long term customers is about developing relationships with them. But it is a two way street. They may think that you need them more than they need you and while at one time it may have been true. It is not necessarily the case anymore. So just as you value your relationship with them hopefully the same can be said of them valuing that relationship also. If they don’t then remember your first obligation is to do what is right for your business not theirs.</p>

<p>Raising money for a new business venture is never easy. And although there are many sources of funding available for a person to pursue most of them will never pan out. At least not initially. Banks prefer to loan money to established business. Angels want to invest in businesses that will provide a hefty return on their capital and venture capitalists want to invest in the next great public company. Often in the end you will find that you have only three options. Yourself, your family, and your friends. And if you had the money you wouldn’t be reading this article.</p>



<p>Asking for money from your family and friends is not always an easy thing to do. You’re asking them to put their trust in you by investing potentially thousands of dollars in your business concept. Which is definitely different than asking for twenty bucks until next Friday. So before you go about asking them you had better be prepared. To start you should make a list of who you are thinking of asking. Consider the relationship you have with each person separately. Is it a good solid relationship or has it been a bit bumpy? You need to really think this through before asking.</p>



<p>Families have been split apart more than once because of money. And you don’t really want to be the cause of such an occurrence. Some people may be willing to loan you the money even though they really don’t have it. Asking grandma to dip into her retirement may not be a wise idea. Once you’ve gone over your list though you should hopefully have a few legitimate candidates left. People that know they can trust you, will believe in you and might have the money.</p>



<p>Now it is time to prepare. Consider your family and friends like you would a bunch of bankers. Prepare your business plan and loan proposal the same as you would for a bank. Your investors are going to want to know what is in it for them. What kind of a return on their investment can they expect? How long will you need the money? And what kind of security if any are you offering? These questions and others are going to pop up so be prepared.</p>



<p>When it comes time to give your proposal watch for red flags. Many people think because they are willing to loan you money it gives them the right to get involved. From some people you may welcome their involvement. Possibly as a sounding board for your ideas but not as a partner. If this happens during your proposal then you can guess what it might be like after you have borrowed their money. Be prepared to walk away from such a situation.</p>



<p>When giving your proposal do not get emotional. Do not use your relationship with someone as a way to persuade them into investing. This is a business proposal offered by you to them. If you let emotion get in the way now then you will later as well. Keep it professional and leave your relationship out of it. This won’t be easy but it’s the only way to do it. And if your proposal is rejected then except it gracefully. Don’t hold any grudges because of it just thank them for listening to you.</p>



<p>Your family and friends can often be a great source of funding for business start-ups you just need to consider the risks beforehand. Take into account their situations before asking and don’t take it personally if they don’t want to help you. Remember that your friends and family members should mean more to you than a business venture does.</p>

<p>Having to handle the accounting functions of a new business is often the bane of the small business owner. Many new owners lack the skills and experience that may be necessary for their business venture. Some accounting terms in fact fly right over their heads. And because they do not understand the functions of accounting well enough there is a tendency to want to hand it over to someone else. But doing so may cause even more problems for you. Unless you understand a few basic concepts.</p>



<p>So to get your education in accounting underway you first need to understand the two basic methods of accounting. Cash-basis and accrual-basis accounting. Each one is uniquely different and if you plan on hiring an accountant to at least help you reconcile your books then it is imperative for you to know which one they plan to use. Or more specifically you need to tell them which one you want them to use. Some accountants prefer using one method over the other which could cause problems if that method is wrong for your business.</p>



<p>So what is cash-basis accounting? Simply put when you operate on a cash-basis then you record all of your transactions when you actually get paid. An easy example would be a hamburger stand. You sell a hamburger and somebody pays you in cash for the food. Then you record the transaction. You record payouts the same way. You don’t record the bill for the hamburger meat when you receive the bill but instead wait until you actually send out the money to pay that bill.</p>



<p>If your business offers payment terms to customers you can still use the cash-basis system. But you have to wait until you receive payment for the invoice you issued to record the sale. Over time as your business grows and more customers are invoiced regularly this system of accounting can become impractical due to the difficulty in tracking payments.</p>



<p>The other system of accounting in use is accrual-basis accounting. This system records transactions as they take place. When you invoice a customer or make a cash sale then the transaction is recorded. And of course when you receive a bill you record this transaction as well. It does not matter that the bill hasn’t been paid yet. Later when your invoice is paid or you pay a bill to your vendor then that payment will be recorded. With this system you also can record partial payments. And you have the ability to better track how many projects your business completed over a certain period of time.</p>



<p>Of course these explanations are only meant to give you a basic understanding of the difference between the two basic accounting methods. If you are not aware of them though you may run into problems with deciding which method is best for your business. Each method has further pros and con’s and pieces to understand. But you should understand each method thoroughly before deciding which to use.</p>

<p>There are many ways for a business to save money. But because employees are so expensive anything that a business owner can do to save money on them can often have the most impact on the business. And when you implement money saving ideas you want them to have as much of an impact as possible. So here are 7 tips that you might consider using to save your business money.</p>



<p>1.&nbsp; If your business is seasonal or has occasional spikes in sales then you should consider hiring temporary workers to handle the load. You won’t have the costs associated with hiring permanent staff and when the surge is over you can easily let them go. Plus you have the added benefit of seeing people in action. Just in case you need someone permanently afterwards.</p>



<p>2.&nbsp; Use independent contractors. This avoids the cost of paying extra taxes and employee benefits. But make sure they are independent contractors. The IRS is not too fond of them so make sure that you issue them a 1099 and make sure you check the IRS definition on what they consider an independent contractor first.</p>



<p>3.&nbsp; Use interns. Colleges often have programs to help people get internships with local businesses. This helps you to get the extra help you need and gives someone a chance to learn the ropes in an actual business environment. And just like with temporary workers you may find someone you’d like to keep.</p>



<p>4.&nbsp; Cross train your employees whenever possible. Often a surge in business might only last for a few days. Employees that work in other areas of your business can often be cross trained so that when this happens they have the ability to pitch in and help.</p>



<p>5.&nbsp; Get more from your employees. Use a performance system that offers some sort of a reward for an outstanding job. Although the perks may cost you some money the incentives are often well worth the boost in performance your employees will give you.</p>



<p>6.&nbsp; Lease your employees from another company. Instead of hiring your employees directly lease them from a leasing company. That way you can cut the cost of human resources and accounting by letting the leasing company handle the paperwork. You just pay the leasing company and they have to pay the employees. Plus all the headaches associated with having a human resources department including the people you would have to pay can go away.</p>



<p>7.&nbsp; Use manufacturer’s reps to handle product sales. Instead of hiring your own sales force use an outside company to handle sales for you. They work on commission which avoids salaries and hourly wages for you and they only get paid for the products or services they sell. Which will provide an incentive for them.</p>



<p>Businesses are always looking for ways they can save money. And because employees are always such a large portion of your expenses cutting employee costs can have a huge impact. But these are just some of the ways your business can save money there are others you just need to take the time to look.</p>

<p>Being an entrepreneur is about education. If you want to run your own business then you need to be willing to learn. Because entrepreneurs have to learn an awful lot. To run your own business means knowing all that you can know about business planning, human resources, management, marketing, taxes and a whole host of other things. If you don’t know about these things and how they apply to your business then you will be behind the learning curve.</p>

If you don’t own a business yet and it is only an idea then you still need to know how the functions of business apply to your idea. Take marketing as an example. There are two points to your education in the field of marketing. One you can learn in a classroom. This is the field of marketing in general. Knowing what it is to market a product or service to a community, niche market, global market, or other businesses. You can’t begin to market your products or services until you know how the marketing of a product or service is done to begin with.</p>



<p>Once you’ve learned what marketing is you can then proceed to the next phase of learning about marketing. That of course is how to market your product or service. Now we know there are going to be many ways of doing that, some will work and some won’t. But both your successes and your failures will be an education. Whether your learning about management or marketing the point is about the education you receive. That is what is most important your education.</p>



<p>You can expect your education in business to be never ending. This is a great thing and should be looked at it in a positive light. As you learn about new things then you also find new opportunities. What you didn’t know yesterday might help you over the hump tomorrow. The internet of course is the greatest resource you have today to learn more. With it you can discover information about your business, industry and competition that you would otherwise never know. But you have to take advantage of it or it does you no good.</p>



<p>Finally you can always go the formal route. That is f you haven’t already go to school. Get an education in business. Whatever field you choose that can help you the most. A formal education is not necessarily as good as actually running a business but it can help you avoid a number of mistakes that you might otherwise make. Business classes will not offer some sort of great life changing insight into what you do but if you take away some small bit of wisdom from each one you take then it will have been worth it. Remember that a good education in business is a never ending process. Enjoy your education and always be willing to learn more. It’s how you get ahead.</p>
