How not to Email Market

Date March 26, 2009

I, as many business owners have a list of contacts that I occasionally send emails out to about my business, maybe something unique and interesting that we are taking part of such as our participation in Bike the Drive / Tour de Cure. These people I email I try to respect as much as possible, to cherish the fact that they are willing to read what I send them, and generally not spam them or clog up their inboxes.

Today I received an email from a photographer who is part of the Bartlett Chamber (not going to out you totally – THIS TIME!). The email simply said “How’s your portfolio?” and there was no text in the body and it was CC’d to dozens of other people instead of BCC’d or individually sent via mail merge or some other tool.

how-not-to-email

Even worse as you can tell from the image above, was that he attached 6 attachments to this spam – one was 10 megs, another was 1 meg. The rest were much smaller.

Five Tips for Email Marketing to Friends and Associates

  1. Keep things brief
  2. Use a descriptive title that tells your recipient what the purpose of the email is
  3. Don’t send attachments unless you absolutely must. Send them a link to your website instead
  4. Don’t CC people, send it as BCC or use a program like Constant Contact or phplist (your web host can probably help you set it up)
  5. Always include your contact info – yes, they obviously have your email, but include a phone number, website link etc. as well.

Mistakes happen, but this person is not the only one that has done this to me and his fellow business associates in the past few weeks.

New Google Updates – a Good thing for Search Marketing!

Date March 24, 2009

As web users become more and more sophisticated and categories become more competitive the concept of “long tail” search marketing becomes more and more important.

Today, Google released two new updates that will make search marketing even more important and will hopefully lead to less keyword spam and more natural language websites that can still rank very well.

Contextual Search

Since search engines are just machines they are usually limited to relatively simple queries. Unfortunately this has lead to (myself included) website copy where you focus on a single keyword said multiple ways in multiple places. With this new update, Google will be looking more at context and will be able to recognize related keywords to help give better pages a better chance to rank for a specific query.

google-longer-descriptions

Longer Descriptions for Longer Searches

The standard 2 line description will still be displayed, for the majority of searches for instance “Public Relations in Elgin” but for “Public Relations Agency for Small Business in Elgin” it can now return longer descriptions that it believes will be relevant to your long tail queries.

What does this mean for SEO?

SEO firms like mine should take these two innovations seriously, these are great opportunities to use our skills positively and act more as artists and not programmers.

For instance, as you can see from this screen shot – PR and Public Relations, Business and Businesses are both considered to be related words now. This should lead to a dramatically improved use of vocabulary instead of relying on saying “public relations agency” 15 times in your text to get the specific keyword density above a certain number.

It also should lead to better pages with more contextually related content to rank better and also be clicked on more than pages with limited content that have over optimized for a specific keyword phrase.
