My post yesterday was about my adorable mom's Menu Board... you need to see this Shopping List Frame!
An old 4x6 frame, add your vinyl title "Shopping List" to the top, a flourish for decoration, and then of course add your shopping list staples like milk...bread...eggs....CHOCOLATE! lol! The glass is dry-erase compatible so members of her household can walk up and write on their cravings and wants. Genius! Cute, and funny!

Chalkboard Menu Board

This was a $5 frame from Target to fit four 4x6 prints. While this particular frame won't work for every household, the idea does! You see, my mom (we used to call her microwave mom growing up cause she hates cooking so if it was microwavable, she usually bought it for dinners) has a rule in her house now that her kids are grown and gone (minus my sister and her husband and newborn who moved in temporarily) that she only has to cook 4 days a week. Fridays are "every man for himself" nights and Saturdays are usually date nights. Sundays are Family meal nights where all of us get together, in which case my dad cooks so it's my mom's night off. Therefore, 4 nights a week my mom is in charge! Isn't that an awesome deal? Haha. Anyway!
She took this frame, pulled the glass and mat off, and sprayed the slots intended for pictures with chalkboard aerosol paint. Using her silhouette machine, she added some vinyl touches, and when reassembling her menu board she put the glass BEHIND the mat so that she could write on the chalkboard but still have a firm solid writing area.

DIY Powder Laundry Detergent Recipe

My previous post of Liquid Laundry Detergent Recipe was such a huge hit, I had people actually requesting the powder version. How much do you love me? ... Cause I've got a powder recipe for you. Mind you, the liquid version comes out to be .028 cents a load which is the best value, this powder version still beats store bought value at .04 cents a load!
Things you'll need:
Fels-Naptha bar (found in the laundry aisle)
Borax
Washing Soda (NOT BAKING SODA)
A grater
A blender
An air-tight container

This recipe makes 48 loads worth, and at 1 tablespoon a load you won't need a huge storage container for this one.
Start by grating your Fels-Naptha bar - the whole thing.

Originally, I didn't think to use a blender so I was grating using the finest side possible. I didn't think about the blender until I added the other two ingredients. It just didn't look right have shreds, so I threw the whole thing in the blender to make powder. Save yourself the hassle, just throw it in the blender now (grate it first, you don't want to hurt your blender blades!)

Next, add 1 and 1/2 cup Borax

Add 1 and 1/2 cup Washing Soda

Stir well

If you are me, at this point you throw it in the blender.

And stir some more.

Voila! Ta-da!

Butterscotch Breakfast Pull Apart

I have a love/hate relationship with craft or recipes gone bad. I hate that I can't do it correctly, but I love that I get to post what NOT to do for my readers. Are you ready for a recipe how-to not? This recipe is originally from Falling Down House- so if you want to see the PRETTY version of the finished Bundt, go check her pictures out. My finished product, however, flopped right out of the pan and didn't look nearly as delicious as it actually tasted. A huge shout out to Sher at Falling Down House for passing this recipe around. It is divine! I certainly will be making it again... except I plan on doing it correctly next time! :)
Breakfast Butterscotch Pull Apart Loaf!
Ingredients:
Frozen Dinner Rolls
1 stick of butter
1/2 Cup brown sugar
1 box (not the larger one) Cook & Serve Butterscotch Pudding (it has to be cook and serve! don't even try instant. Can I just tell you how hard it was for me to find Cook & Serve? I was asking Sher if it even existed!)
Deep Pan (Sher uses a Bundt pan and I think that's where I went wrong in this.... I don't own a Bundt pan)
Cooking Spray

1. Coat your deep pan with cooking spray (again, try to use a bundt pan if possible... my rolls began to burn on the outside and did practically nothing on the inside.)
2. Add your frozen dinner rolls to your pan. When I first got started, I thought "man my dish is super deep! I can probably double this recipe in one pan!" so I dumped ALL my dinner rolls into the pan, and then continued to the next step before I remembered my Cinnamon Roll attempt where the rolls quadrupled in size during the "rise over night" part and I immediately had to improvise so that my Breakfast Butterscotch would not have the same fate. I grabbed another deep dish and tried to separate the rolls and brown sugar I had already poured evenly. Do yourself a favor and just stick to the plan of 18 dinner rolls per bundt pan.
3. Add 1/2 cup brown sugar remember at this point I now have two pans and therefore doubling the recipe.

4. Add 1 package of cook and serve butterscotch pudding mix

5. Melt your stick of butter and pour over pans.

6. Cover and let rise overnight.

Once again, my rolls "rise over night" step has been an over acheiver. Will I ever get this step correctly? Is my home too warm? I need to skip the 'over night' step and watch them very carefully I guess. Or else stop putting so many rolls in a pan! :)

7. Bake 350 for 25-30 minutes
8. Put a plate over top of the pan, and flip! All the juices will now flow down and coat your entire pan of bread. Mmmmm so yummy.

Like I said in the beginning of this post, mine do not look nearly as appetizing as Sher's.... I highly recommend looking at her final picture for the mouth watering picture :)

The Pull Apart bread was a success none the less, in that it all got eaten still! The flavor is unbelievable and because they are all individual rolls baked together the "pull apart" part works great :)

Valentines Day No Stress Gift

My husband hates expectations, especially when it comes to holidays. I have to say, I must agree. What makes Feb 14th's dinner out more special than yesterday's? Because the media tells you it means more on that day? That if you don't do something special on that day, you are not loved or do not love? Oh come on! Give me a break! (are you still with me? I'm not a Valentine's Day hater... stay with me here...)
So what do you do for someone who doesn't want to do anything extreme? You keep it low stress. Something extra that you don't do everyday, or even occasionally, but at the same time nothing that screams "we're in the follower's pack!"
So this is what I did this year for Jonathan- got balloons for each year we've been together (actually, in the pictures, I'm missing one because my toddler had fun while I put it all together :))
At the bottom of each string, I attached a picture- one from each year. On the back of each picture, I wrote the year and a memory of that year. In the pictures, you won't see the memory written yet. So sorry for you ;)
Also, a disclaimer... our bed (although made) is yes, pathetic. We don't own much, we have sufficient for our needs. A headboard is not a necessity to us, nor are fancy sheets or comforters. So if you're going to look at my photos and judge, you're excused now before I continue..... still with me? Ok! :)

Jonathan liked Valentine's this year. This gift meant more than a $50 Red Lobster bill and a movie we both snoozed through. Low stress, easy Valentine's Day gift.

Chocolate Chip Bag Tip

Here's an idea floating around pinterest that is so cool I had to jump on and show you all....
What do you do with a chocolate chip bag after it's been opened but not fully used? There's the classic roll it up on itself and tuck it tight back in the cupboard, or a rubberband, or chip clamps.... but how about taking an old drink bottle top and creating not only a tight seal but an easy to pour top?!

Candied Pecan Cinnamon Rolls Recipe

I used to make these a lot when we lived in Missouri, but for some reason this first attempt of making Candied Pecan Cinnamon Rolls in Arizona was almost a fail! Don't get me wrong, they were still edible and completely yummy. But, they lacked eye appeal. You'll see what I mean as I show you how to make them.
What you'll need:
Frozen Rhodes Cinnamon Rolls
2 Sticks of Butter
2 Cups Brown Sugar
8 Tbls Light Corn Syrup
A package of Pecans
Non Stick Cooking Spray
A Casserole Dish

1. Melt butter.
2. In a large bowl, add Brown Sugar, light corn syrup and mix with the melted butter.
3. Dump mixture into a casserole dish (Mine was 9x13)
4. Sprinkle Pecans on top (I used the whole bag, but you can use to your liking)
5. Add frozen cinnamon rolls on top of mixture:

6. Cover and let rise over night. In Missouri, this was sufficient. In Arizona, the cinnamon rolls rose to like 4x their size! It was unbelievable!

Because they rose so much, it made the very last step difficult. You'll see, keep reading.
7. Bake at 325 for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
8. Dump upside down onto a cookie sheet or foil. This is where I had issues. Because the rolls rose so much, the mixture underneath did not harden as much as they normally do, creating a gooey mess when I tried to flip it over. They were still very delicious and very edible, but they were not so pretty upon the flip:

My mouth is watering just posting about these. It seriously is SO good. If your family is not a nut fan, you CAN skip the pecans and just have candied cinnamon rolls. I had to do that once for my sister who despises nuts, and it still was delicious! Fattening? Maybe. I never claimed they were Weight Watcher worthy ;)

Star Trek and Power Ranger Onesies

I had the privelage of meeting my nephew Dominic for the first time a couple weeks ago. I'm kind of known in my extended family for personalized onesies and t-shirts. What can I say? I love my silhouette and I know how to use it! :) Don't be a hater.
Dominic was no exception to my love for personalized onesies. Only, his mother got to help pick what they were :)
We started off with a pack of white Gerber onesies- but white is so boring! I have a hard time finding colored onesies. I know JoAnns and Hobby Lobby sell them, but for $4 a pop and only in selected colors! So lame. So with some left over RIT dye we had from dying my husband's golf discs (see here), we dyed the white onesies Red by following instructions on the RIT box.
My SIL ("sister in law") is a star trek fan (are they still called "trekky"s?) so we of course did one of those:

This one was SO easy. After the onesie was dyed red, I cut a yellow heat transfer vinyl the same size as the black, and just layered them for ironing. Ironed the yellow first, let it cool, then ironed the black on top.

The next one we made, a Red Power Ranger onesie, was a little more difficult. Creating the image from scratch was harder and there were no images online to really go off of. I'm still pretty proud of it though.
I started with ironing the white vinyl first. After it cooled, I ironed the black, then finally the yellow.

I do wish I had made the belt buckle larger, but I was trying too hard to stay "mini" for a baby size.

How To Make Bath Fizzies

I like calling them "Bath Bombs" better but for some reason repeating that second "b" word on the internet scares me, haha! So we shall call them Bath Fizzies.
This recipe is incredibly simple, and apparently a HUGE hit. I gave these away to my sisters, mom and a friend for Valentine's day and so far the report back is "PLEASE MAKE MORE! I'LL PAY FOR IT!". That's always a good sign, right?
I couldn't find a recipe online that suited my fancy. So I created a Hybrid one. I was worried at first, because I'm no chemist, so who's to say these work? But alas, they do! And really well! Besides the kid factor of "ooo! it fizzes!", they truly do soften the water and smell divine.

Let's get on with it! How to make homemade bath fizzies-

What you'll need:
Molds (I bought heart shaped ice cube molds at Target for $2.50, but also used my muffin tin.)
Cornstarch
Baking Soda
Fragrance
Citric Acid (this was so hard for me to find. I suggest buying it online, it is cheaper. I found mine at Whole Foods, 4 oz for $7)
Spritz Water Bottle (a spray with a nozzle setting for "mist" not stream)
Food Coloring if desired
Glass Bowl
Whisk
A tag of your choosing
Patience. (hehe)

Start by mixing 1 cup baking soda, 4 oz citric acid, and 1 cup cornstarch in a glass bowl using a whisk.

Put a cup of mixture in separate glass bowl. You'll mix the rest a little at a time to avoid ruining your entire batch. Add fragrance/essential oil to liking (I kept adding fragrance drops until I felt it was strong enough, whisking after each drop). Those two steps were easy parts. Now pay close attention because this next part is a bit harder for beginners who don't know the consistency it should be. If you add too much water, it won't work. Using your spray bottle (add your water and desired food coloring), SLOWLY, gently mist the powder, then mix before spraying again. You only need to add enough water to achieve the coloring you want. Unfortunately, if you add too much water trying to get a darker, bolder color you are going to lose the fight against pre-fizzing. As I sprayed the mixture, it would fizz slightly. That is okay, just stop before your mixture gets clumpy and wet. Like this:

That is too much water. You don't want to see that many clumps, it still needs to be powder form. You'll know if you added too much water when you move on to the next step. IF you add too much water, do not fret. Remember, we did a little at a time to avoid destruction. Simply add more unscented/colored powder to what you've got to even it out.
Spoon it into your mold.

Because I had added too much water, and being an amateur did not know it, it took coming to this step to see my mixture start to puff up in the mold:

Uh oh! It's ok, pack it back down and add powder to the mold.

It should now look like this:

Minor puffing is okay, just not too much swelling. Let it sit over night to harden.

In the morning, gently pop them out of the mold.

Baggie them up! (or jars, or boxes)

(Remember I said I did my muffin tin as a mold too? Those are the ones on the left). Add your tag:

Since mine were for Valentine's Day my tag read "Soapin' You'd Be My Valentine Cause You're The Bomb!" Bath Bombs.

I stapled my tag to the top of the baggie and handed them out!

I really didn't expect my receivers to rave so much about them. I'm glad they turned out so well, because like I said, this was a hybrid recipe (basically made up to how I wanted based off of other recipes found online).

Special K Treats Recipe

This is a recipe floating around my husband's office. Someone brought some in, and my husband insisted I keep the recipe for future use. So, I whipped them up last weekend for Superbowl Sunday.
What you'll need:
1 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Light Corn Syrup
1 Cup Peanut Butter
5 Cups Special K Cereal (original)
Wax Paper

To make:
Bring 1 cup sugar and 1 cup Light Corn Syrup to a rapid boil (stir constantly- don't burn the sugar!)
Mix in 1 cup Peanut Butter (have this ready to mix in, if you stop stirring you may burn the sugar!)
Remove from heat
Mix in 4.5 - 5 cups Special K cereal
Drop onto wax paper into small pieces
(if you couldn't tell by my instructions... I started to burn my sugar. Oops. Still tastes good)

Had I known ahead of time how hard and chewy these were, I'd have done the pieces a heck of a lot smaller. No need to make them the size of cookies.

DIY Coloring Wallpaper

What do you do when there is that certain wall your toddler just LOVES to color on?

Besides the obvious- time out, "no no no", do the crime pay the time (cleaning it up) techniques?

You may not agree with this as a parenting technique, and that's okay, I was just trying to survive the weekend with company in the house and not always a watchful eye on my wandering 18 month old...

Wrap that wall in easel paper....

And of course, have that magic eraser on hand.... just in case she misses....

See? I'm a fun mom!........ sometimes...... if you don't count all those times the paper WASN'T there and she got in major trouble and had to clean up the wall art.

By the way, I got the easel paper at Hobby Lobby, $8 for a roll that's like 2 ft wide by yards and yards long. Couldn't even tell ya. I have used it a lot, for every banner or sign I make, and have yet to put a dent in my roll. It's in the art department, by all the paint brushes and real easels.

Welcome Guests Basket

My husband's brother, his wife and baby came to stay with us this weekend. The men attended the Waste Management Open while us women and babies stayed home and relaxed. I've had 3 guests come and stay in my new (to me) home now, but with these guys I finally felt like I was settled in enough to enjoy company. I decided to put together a welcome basket for the guest bathroom. I realize afterwards though that my basket was a littttle too big. But you'll get the idea.

I started with the idea to make a cute sign to accompany the basket of goodies. I found this design on Silhouette:

The idea behind it is cute, but for some reason my Cameo went crazy during cutting (yes, I was using the cutting mat even) and my "accordion lolli" was ruined. I attempted 3 more times but each time, my cameo rollers didn't hold the cutting mat firm enough and the page started turning with each cut. It was very frustrating. Rather than waste any more paper, I decided to work with what I had.

I glued together what I could with what I had cut, trying as best I could to make the circle complete. Then, used the round cut out from the design to kind of hold it all together:

Next, I changed out my Cameo Blade for a marker (by the way, I found these tiny markers on sale, 120 for $4 at Borders when they were closing. They fit the attachment from my Silhouette. Score!) and did a test run for my words "welcome guests".

Using the cardstock I used as a test, I taped my scrapbook tag to the exact spot, and ran the cameo again.

The font I used for "Welcome Guests" is called "Just Another Font" and I downloaded it free from dafont.com
After gluing it to the center of my accordion lolli, I also glued on a Popsicle stick.

I grabbed my empty basket, covered the bottom with shredded decor paper, rolled a hand towel and stuck my lolli in it.

I bought some trial size toiletries and shampoo and conditioner for my guests. See how empty it looks? I should have grabbed more. Oh well. You live you learn. I never claimed to be Martha :)

Toddler Chalk Activity

It's not necessarily hard for me to find things to entertain my toddler, but it is hard for me to keep finding things that will entertain her. She's like her dad, in that, once you've done it it's time to find something bigger and better to attempt. This past week we visited our local library for a Literacy Program. The craft/activity we did there was pretty exciting for her, and yet sooo simple.
What you'll need:
Black Construction Paper
Colored Chalk
Aerosol Hair Spray

(ok seriously, she was so mad at me for embarrassing her with pictures. Since when do 18 month olds get embarrassed by their mothers? I swear my child is a mini teenager)

Give your child a black sheet of construction paper

And then some colored chalk.... if your toddler is older, you can teach them how to smug the chalk and such. I probably could have taught Joee that, but she was so cross with me for having the camera out that I was lucky just be breathing in her presence.

After your child has created the masterpiece, take your hair spray and quickly spray your construction paper. This will hold the chalk in place and prevent any unwanted smears from happening.
See? So easy. So simple. So entertaining.
Our library staff first read a book about going outer-space, and the goal was to draw a picture of space (stars, moon, etc). If you squint, you can see my daughter's drawing actually really is outer-space. Lol. JK.

Location wise, CVS and Walmart both are closer to me than Walgreens- but I take that extra 1/2 mile drive to Walgreens because I know I'm getting value for my money, and I know they have exactly what I'm looking for. From snacks to cosmetics to prescriptions, it's my one stop shop when I need that pit stop.

Walgreens will always have my back. They are constantly creating new ways for consumers like me to save a couple bucks on things we use most. I DID IT

This may not seem like a big deal to you, but for me this felt huge. In November 2010, when I started this blog, I had high dreams of it becoming big. Not because I wanted to become popular or famous, but because I loved the idea of other people liking my ideas. I saw people from other blogs hosting giveaways and making readers super happy with free products- I wanted to be that source of giving! My goal when I started this blog was to get 100 followers in a year. I knew I was over shooting the stars on that one- but I thought it'd be a fun number to reach for. Welllllll it OBVIOUSLY took me double the time, here it is February 2012, but I finally reached my 100 followers! I'm so thrilled!

A BIG thank you to all of you for sticking around. I have gone in and out of consistent blogging and you've all hung on for the ride.

Update On Fabric Softner Post

I just wanted to update my Fabric Softner Post....

It is all A.O.K. people, I repeat, A.O.K.! I have found my sponges! They did NOT get sucked into the dryer or eaten by the dryer ducts. They, in fact, were eaten by socks and pillow cases! Of which they went undetected and were not found until said hiding places were put to use.

We may all continue on with our lives in a happy manner.
