(Jan. 04) – U.S. aerospace giant Boeing plans to close down its Wichita, Kan., plant which would impact more than 2,000 employees working in the plant. The decision has reportedly been taken in the wake of shrinking U.S. defense spending.

Boeing to close Wichita plant by end of 2013

Boeing officials told, validating earlier reports, the shutting down will be exercised by the end of 2013, but it doesn't expect job cuts to take place until early in the third quarter of 2012.

Boeing said in a statement, “The site does not have enough sustainable business on the horizon to create an affordable cost structure to maintain and win new business.” Future aircraft maintenance, modification and support work will be done at its San Antonio facility. The shifting to the new plant will start in the months ahead, the statement disclosed further.

The plant under the threat of closing down has been manufacturing aircrafts since 1929 and it is part of Boeing's defense, space and security apparatus, or BDS. The Wichita plant, with more than 2,160 workers, had been the company's base for its worldwide transport executive systems business as well as its B-52 and 767 International Tanker programs.

However, the facility had been hit with program closures and the winding down of contracts over the past five years.

“The site does not have enough sustainable business on the horizon to create an affordable cost structure to maintain and win new business. We recognize how this will affect the lives of the highly skilled men and women who work here, so we will do everything possible to assist our employees, their families and our community through this difficult transition,” said Mark Bass, vice president and general manager for BDS' maintenance, modifications and upgrades division.

Boeing said it will provide workers with retirement seminars, job search resources, financial counseling and help finding work inside or outside of Boeing.

“Every rise has a downfall”, it’s an old saying but fits very much for recent victory of Google Chrome over Internet Explorer in terms of market share.

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8, which was considered as the undoubted king of browsing and once the holder of ‘world’s most-used browser’ tag, has lost its supremacy in browsing field to its toughest rival Google Chrome.

According to statistics and figures by StatCounter, a Web Analytic firm, Internet Explorer 8, after been trailed slightly by Google chrome in last week of November, has lost significant share of market until now.

According to an emailed statement from Prince Alwaleed’s Kingdom Holding Company; the huge investment in Twitter by the company is part of a drive “to invest in promising, high-growth businesses with a global impact.”

Prince Alwaleed’s stake is equivalent to 3.6% of the Twitter’s total value of $8.4 billion estimated by the analysts in October this year.

Microblogging site Twitter - allows users to send messages called ‘tweets’ of up to 140 characters each – has achieved recently a land mark of 100 million active users who send 250 million tweets per day.

“Social media will fundamentally change the media industry landscape in the coming years. Twitter will capture and monetize this positive trend,” Ahmed Halawani, executive director of private equity and international investments at Kingdom Holding, said in the same statement.

Arabian Business magazine has rated Prince Alwaleed as the Arab world’s richest business man, with more than $21 billion in wealth in 2011.

Officials of Kingdom Holding, which was pursuing to purchase the shares of Twitter since October, didn’t provide any further details of the deal early Monday. Matt Graves, a Twitter spokesperson, confirmed the deal but refused to comment further.

It is worth-remembering that different online forums and social-networks, like Twitter and Facebook, had played a key role in the on going Arab revolution as the same were extensively used by activists during this year’s Arab uprisings.

The top-rated members of euro zone, like France, are feared to get affected because of increasing pressure on the government bonds of these countries.

Euro Zone Debt Crisis Deepens as Euro Hits 1-month Low (Image Courtesy: breakthrougheurope.org)

The euro drop as far as $1.3460 - the lowest in more than one month period - after the French bond yield spread over benchmark German bonds hit euro-era highs.

Italy’s failure under Mario Monti, former EU Commissioner, to crush fears over the country's long-term political and economic future has led to Italian yields shot back above the critical 7 percent level.

Adding further concerns over the crisis Masafumi Yamamoto, chief strategist at Barclays, said: "It's not clear if a new government in Italy can carry out measures that would satisfy the market. I would not be surprised if the euro falls to around $1.30 within two weeks."

As the euro currency union trapped in a nasty cycle of falls in government bonds which is hurting the region's big banks, further discouraging buoyancy in the area, the euro is coming under heavy pressure.

Funding strains among European banks are evident with euro/dollar three-month cross currency basis swap spreads widening to a level not seen since late 2008.

Her equestrian career didn't last (she says she rode for a year-and-a-half), but her cooking stuck. Now, the company has grown without outside funding -- a team of 15 operates two trucks in Los Angeles, and seven employees run the truck in San Francisco. And Chien has no issue telling her truckers what to do: Early on, she drove Nom Nom's first truck for three months and got into a routine of checking the propane, jumpstarting the vehicle, and eating Banh Mi every day.

Facebook has a self-service advertisement policy which supports small advertisers more than large ones. Since 64% of small businesses believe social media is needless; therefore, the program is all about spreading knowledge. The company followed almost same strategy to encourage the advertising industry in April this year with Facebook Studio, which also offers free resources, although there’s no free advertising factor.

Apple has emerged as the number one smartphone vendor globally, as the worldwide mobile phone market grew 65.4% year over year in the second quarter of 2011 (2Q11).

The total smartphones shipments exceeded 100 million units foe the third consecutive quarter, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker 2Q11.

The other companies in the top five list are: Samsung, Nokia, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) and HTC.

IDC said that Apple's success can be directly attributed to its distribution - with over 200 carriers in more than 200 countries, increased manufacturing capacity, and solid demand within emerging and developed markets from both consumers and business users.

However, Apple has yet to top Nokia's single-quarter volume record of 28.1 million units.

IDC's Mobile Phone Technology and Trends team senior research analyst Ramon Llamas said the smartphone market crowned a new leader in 2Q11, and its name is Apple.

"Ever since the first iPhone launched in 2007, Apple has made market-setting strides in hardware, software, and channel development to grab mindshare and market share. Demand has been so strong that even models that have been out for one or two years are still being sought out. With an expected refresh later this year, volumes are set to reach higher levels," said Llamas.

The biggest gainer in the quarter was South Korea-based Samsung. The company's Galaxy S smartphones helped it realise the largest year-over-year growth of any vendor among the top five.

IDC said that Samsung's bada-powered smartphones likewise grew, while demand for its Windows Phone smartphones has cooled off.

Apple's rise to the top comes at a time when former worldwide leader Nokia is in the midst of a major transition.

Nokia ceded the number one position for the first time in the history of IDC's Mobile Phone Tracker, with smartphone volumes dipping below the 20 million unit mark for the first time since 3Q09.

Even as the company released new smartphones running on Symbian^3, demand for its products running on the aged Symbian platform has shifted to other devices.

Businesses need money in order to be able to do business and so without it a business can easily fail or have a hard time expanding in any way, shape or form. With that in mind, a great way for business owners to gain more money is through factoring. For individuals who would like to know a whole lot more, this article will discuss what it is and how it can benefit almost any organizations.

It's challenging to reap the benefits of factoring if an individual doesn't know what is it and this is what this document will start out doing. It primarily consists of the debts owed to a enterprise by debtors. In the event that corporations are owed cash they typically don't receive it in one giant lump total. Instead, they obtain it in smaller increments over a longer period of time, which can really restrict the business' cash flow. However, if they sell it to a different firm they should be able to get the funds they will need, which is basically what the entire process demands!

Thus, who needs factoring? Corporations that feel as if they currently have a lot of cash to be paid to them by debtors and really feel as if they require it quicker compared to they will likely obtain it will definitely want to benefit from this opportunity. When companies don't possess the income they need in order to do what they need to be able to do then it actually restricts the company. That being said, any firms that would really like to get the money they are owed and put it into the business can definitely benefit from this approach.

Firms that really feel they have way too many workers working in accounts receivables and would like to try to reduce down costs in that area could also really benefit from factoring. The reason being in the event that presently there isn't too much debt payable to the company then there isn't a whole lot for accounts receivables to carry out. That being said, less workers are needed, which saves the firm money straight away! Hopefully this information has been ideal for firms managers who would like to release more money as well as save some money in order to put it back into the business and make it as successful as possible!

 Article Source: EzineArticles

The North Sea element of the sale—which press reports value at potentially $1 billion—is part of a plan to sell as much as $30 billion of assets to cover an expected bill of $40 billion relating to the oil spill off the U.S. coast last year.

The British oil giant also said the prospective sale would help focus resources in other areas of the North Sea where it intends to invest about £12 billion ($19.46 billion) in total over the next five years.

The assets include Wytch Farm onshore oilfield in Dorset, southern England, which BP describes as the largest onshore oil field in Western Europe but recently shut it down for a few months after an oil-pipeline leak.

BP is also selling all majority stakes in aging gas fields in the southern North Sea and associated infrastructure, aiming to complete the divestments around the end of 2011. The North Sea was one of BP's core areas but many of its oil-and-gas fields there are old and its production is now a third of what it was at its peak.

Apart from Europe, the oil giant has also agreed sizeable sales elsewhere. Last fall, it sold its stake in Argentina-based oil-and-gas company Pan American Energy LLC to Bridas Corp. for $7 billion.

SYDNEY, Australia – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, today announced it has sold 10 million of its Android-powered GALAXY S smartphones. The milestone was reached less than seven months after the device was launched in June 2010.

JK Shin, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics, said “The GALAXY S is the result of our 22 year heritage in the mobile industry. It is the realisation of our concept of ‘the Smart Life’ – we wanted to makes users’ lives more convenient, more exciting, and more integrated. Today’s milestone shows that we have succeeded: 10 million GALAXY S users around the world are living the Smart Life.”

“The GALAXY S has set a new standard in smartphones and outperformed even our own expectations. We are proud of this achievement; to consistently sell over 1.4 million devices per month clearly demonstrates the consumer demand for relevant, empowering mobile experiences. We will continue to meet this demand, delivering leading innovation and building smartphones that will maximize user experiences.”

Introduced by JK Shin at CTIA Las Vegas in March 2010, the Android-powered GALAXY S incorporates a 4-inch Super AMOLED screen and a 1 GHz application processor that enables vibrant HD videos, rich augmented reality content through Layar Reality Browser and advanced LBS (Location Based Services).

“The Samsung GALAXY S has also achieved outstanding success in Australia,” said Tyler McGee, Vice President of Telecommunications, Samsung Electronics Australia. “Since its launch in July 2010, we’ve seen strong consumer adoption with a consistent growth in sales. The continuing demand has driven us to introduce a new white GALAXY S to the range, exclusive to Vodafone for the first 8 weeks, available January 12th.”

The release of the white Samsung GALAXY S this week follows on from the recent launch of the Android 2.2 (Froyo) software upgrade in which Samsung offered Australian users additional value through the inclusion of two free mobile applications. These are turn-by-turn navigation by NAVIGON with Australian and New Zealand maps and the Press Reader app where consumers can subscribe to have both Australian and international newspapers delivered direct to their phone daily.

But it is not often that you see women eying sports cars. Chinese women, however, seem to be turning this stereotype on its head. Recent studies have revealed that a large proportion of China’s women millionaires (a third of Chinese millionaires are women) have been splurging on fast cars. Statistics have revealed that Chinese women have been purchasing a disproportionately large percentage of high-end sports cars. Apparently, the number of Chinese women buying Maserati's is thrice the number of women buyers in Europe. Chinese women also account for double the global average of female buyers of Ferraris.

The Chinese economy is growing by leaps and bounds, the number of Chinese millionaires is multiplying quickly and the sale of ultra-luxury vehicles in the Chinese auto market is likely to rise by 35 percent in 2011. Sales for Maseratis in mainland China increased by 50 percent last year and China looks poised to beat Italy and become the second-largest market for Maserati. While women in Europe account for 10 percent of Maserati’s sales, women in China account for about 30 percent.

Everyone, from Ferrari to Lamborghini are looking at a huge growth in the Chinese market. With more and more Chinese women taking over what was once “men’s jobs”, perhaps their need for similar rewards has increased. Fast cars are fast becoming gender-neutral buys. High-end car manufacturers’ marketing plans need to factor this in, especially as China seems poised to become the world’s largest luxury market.

After several months of strong growth, the number of smartphones powered by Google's Android platform surpassed the Apple iPhone in the U.S. for the three-month period ending in November 2010, a market research firm says.

61.5 million Americans ages 13 and older owned a smartphone in the period, and 26% had an Android-based phone, ComScore reported Friday. Third-place Apple followed with a 25% share and Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry, led the pack with a 33.5% share.

Android's number two ranking followed an increase of 6.4 percentage points from the previous three-month period. During the same timeframe, Apple's share grew by less than one percentage point, and RIM's BlackBerry fell 4.1 points. The overall number of people sporting smartphones rose by 10%.

Rounding out the top five smartphone platforms was Microsoft with a 9% share, followed by Palm 3.9%. The platforms' shares fell by 1.8 and 0.7 percentage points, respectively.

Analysts have said that Android would eventually overtake Apple's iPhone, which uses the company's proprietary iOS, because of Android's widespread adoption among so many manufacturers, such as Samsung, LG, Motorola, and HTC. Apple is the only maker of the iPhone, which competes solely in the high end of the smartphone market.

Besides fewer manufacturers, only one carrier, AT&T, sells the iPhone in the U.S., while multiple carriers sell Android phones. That situation is expected to change soon. Industry observers expect Verizon Wireless to start carrying the iPhone soon, which should give Apple a market boost.

ComScore's findings were different from Nielsen's, which reported this week that Apple in November managed to stay ahead of the Android platform in the U.S. market in November, 27.9% versus 25.8%. Android in the month had cut Apple's lead in October nearly in half. Nielsen also found that of the smartphones purchased in the last half of the year, 40.8% were Android based, 26.9% were iPhones, and 19.2% were BlackBerries.

Starting from an estimated 83.3 percent of the market this fall, the iPad would drop but still hold on to 61.7 percent in 2011. Most of the drop would only come in the summer, when Android 3.0 tablets would ship in earnest.

The iPad would see a steep drop off at the end of 2011, but Moskowitz estimated that Apple would still have the largest individual share for a manufacturer in 2012 at 44.3 percent. He didn't say how much of the share would be divided by operating systems, where Android would still be the main rival. HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung and numerous others are planning models with Android 3.0, but with the exception of Samsung, most have held off since they didn't feel Google's OS was ready for tablets.

Much of the continued grip would come from the tablet market inherently playing into Apple's strengths, the analyst explained. While an app-heavy model was relatively simple to replicate, Apple had a movie and TV service ecosystem that weren't likely to have equivalents from competitors for awhile. The physical design itself and the OS "robustness" also played a role, Moskowitz wrote.

The remakes conspicuously omitted RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook as a significant factor from the sales and suggested that RIM wouldn't repeat its early smartphone lead in the tablet arena. The company in its results call on Thursday hinted that it wouldn't sell the PlayBook until March, just before a second-generation iPad is expected and possibly as the earliest Android 3.0 tablets arrive.

According to TIME.com, AT&T has the worst mobile phone service in America. That's saying a lot, considering AT&T is one of the most widely used wireless carrier. The findings come from Consumer Reports, which surveyed 58,000 readers to see how they felt about their carriers.

The AT&T wireless carrier "was the only one to drop significantly in overall satisfaction," compared to last year, accordign to Consumer Reports. Furthermore, over half of this wireless carrier's users surveyed used an iPhone.

"AT&T is now the worst carrier," the magazine said. "AT&T is now positioned in last place overall and in almost every market we rate."

Wireless carrier Sprint Nextel "pulled even in overall satisfaction with Verizon" -- a pretty big change as Sprint tied with AT&T for being the worst service provider.

Which wireless carrier is ranked the best according to Consumer Reports readers? That would be U.S. Cellular.

The January 2011 issue of Consumer Reports will be available on newsstands beginning tomorrow.
