I have been using Jott.com for a few weeks now – and I must say – I am loving it.

When I am away from my laptop – and I remember a task for a project component or I am making an appointment with someone – I just call it in to Jott – and it sends a message to MS Outlook . It creates a prompt the task or Calendar entry. - I get a chance to edit it for additional details. I have found this a great way to be productive while I am sitting waiting for appointments . I have even used it while I am standing in line at Costco!

The web-based software uses voice to text technology to convert what I am saying into text. For the most part – the conversion has been “spot-on” in its translation – and the few times – it is not exactly as I had said it – it is pretty darn close – close enough for me to a quick edit for it.

The real test for me will be in a couple of weeks while I am on the road travelling. I can already see how this is going to save me even more time.

One of the functions that I have not tested out is the voice-to-twitter function. I must admit – it sounds appealing – and yet my trust factor is still building for this function. I am looking forward to doing a little experimentation when I have time.

Personal Brain is magnificent for linking thoughts, ideas, concepts, relationships. Once you start creating your maps it is a snap to connect what they call “child” thoughts to a topic and include attachments such as mind maps, documents, spreadsheets, hyperlinks.

The joy of using personal brain comes in when you are needing to do rapid jumping from thought concept to thought concept. I use it for mapping new information and resources related to research I am doing, my own learning objectives, training, as well as my personal interests. I include links to documents on my hard drive – as well as embed things like mind maps right into my Personal Brain file. It is speedy and quick and the only 1 draw back for me is that it does not print out well – and yet, for it’s performance on-screen – I haven’t found anything as fun to use – or as quick.

For me – besides the fun – I can “link” concepts from varied different sources together and quickly move from one to another. This isn’t as easy to do in systems like MindManager and the like – because for the most part in those programs you want to attempt to keep each map relatively small – and you are better off just to use multiple maps. With Personal Brain – Your file can be as large as you want it – and you don’t experience “information overload” like you can in other mapping programs.

This is not for everyone, but for those who are collecting large amounts of knowledge or information who want to access it quickly – Personal Brain can be a great resource.

Personal Brain Website: The Brain

On The Brain site they have a good description of 12 ways most people use Personal Brain

In addition, the folks at The Brain also have information sessions and training sessions they run frequently for new and advanced users.

On August 31, 2008 Buzan iMap Version 3 is being released. This release includes an amazing number of promised enhancements:

New enhancements like Microsoft Office and Open Office integration

Project management integration

Exportable scalable Vector Graphics

vastly improved speed

new sketch pad capabilities

and a long list of additional enhancements

I use other mapping software programs – and all have their own benefits. Busan’s imap system – has the most organic feel – and most closely relates to the manual way of doing a mind map – The ability to manipulate, draw, use colours quickly – is so much like using coloured markers – it makes the whole process alot of fun.

If you haven’t tried a mind mapping software before – and if you want to give imap a try – The Buzan folks have a free 7day trial and if you are reading this post before 31Aug08 – they also have a limited time offer you may want to have a look at.

About a year ago – I decided I would include Social Media as one of the strategies in my own marketing plan. What I have noticed in the past year is Social Media environments are changing like crazy. It’s hard to get a handle on it all if you are just getting exposed to it all. Here is what I have going on currently:

Here are some of the things I have joined and I have already found useful:

A Twitter.com Account to connect with other practitioners and people who you are meant to serve

A Twitpic.com account for sharing photographs in your Twitter Tweets

A Youtube Account for Video uploading

A Digg account for voting

A del.icio.us account for social bookmarking

A linkedIn account for my professional network

A Plaxo account – (new for me this week – boy Plaxo has changed!)

A FriendFeed account

A Facebook account : Insider tip – Have a look at Mari Smith’s Product – She is a Facebook Expert

A Myspace account – just to attract folks who may prefer there instead of Facebook

A Blogtalkradio Account

Here are some I have joined – that I am sure I will be using in the very near future

Here are some of the ones I have joined – and I haven’t yet found useful.

One of the things I am currently spending my time learning – is how to be most effective while casting a large Social Media net.

One person who does an excellent job of teaching you how to minimize your effort and maximize your return with social media is Nancy Marmelejo. Have a look at her offerings to give you a leg up on getting a handle of all this Social Media Stuff.

I am in a learning curve right now. It’s about twittering. – the water is warm in the world of twittering – and the benefits are visible. Finding people to serve who are in alignment with what you offer the world – seems so immediate on Twitter.

I am looking for ways to balance the time I have reading the writings of those Twitter Folks I am following and getting to see how things work.

Here are a few things I have picked up so far:

1. You need a twitter account – firstly go to Twitter.com and sign up for an account.

2. Put up your image in your twitter account – Twitter is all about authentic relationships – Put on your face.

3. Use Your creativity to design a profile that shares both Keywords (so others can find you) as well as represents who you are as an individual. If your intention is to use Twitter to aid in your relationship building around your business – keep your branding in mind as you design your background image. Twitterbacks.com has some nice templates to use to help create your back ground image – all the sizing is done for you.

You can have a look at my twitter profile – to see how I took a twitter background from Twitterbacks – and then modified to more closely fit my own personal brand.

4. Decide how you will keep up with the “tweets”. There are a number of platforms available. You can update from the web at Twitter.com, Use a downloadable platform like Tweetdeck.com or Twhirl.com. There are also Twitter applications to help you you do research or find things like what feeling words people are using today.

5. Save yourself time if you involved with other Social Media sites: If you use Wordpress or Facebook there are plug ins and tools to help your Twitter messages appear in your blog or on your Facebook page.

A twitter tool for wordpress

6. Be effective with your tweets. If you have something you want to appear at a specific time – when you won’t be available to tweet it, you can use a service called TweetLater. And here is a big one – spend only an assigned amount of time per day using twitter.

7. Find out the Twitter best practices:I am noticing an every evolving list of best practices with regards to using twitter. Of course it all depends on how you intend to use this social media platform. One of the best ways to find out about best practices is to first have a look at some of the handbooks for Twitter that have been developed by some Twitter users.

Have a look at these three:

www.Twitterhandbook.com – a handbook developed via social media tweets by Deb Micek and Warren Witlock. In addition to the handbook they also have a blog where you can keep up on twitter related stuff.

A Geek’s Guide to Promoting Yourself and Your Online Business in 140 Characters or Less with Twitter is a free 48page twitter handbook from the gues at GeekPreneur.com

TwitterSecrets by Joel Comm is a 30page report that shows you how to use twitter – and how to use it for your goals.

8. Be on the look out for Twitter Traps. These are the things than get get you side-tracked from your other effective actions in the day.

Doing nothing else but reading other peoples tweets and thinking about what you can next tweet about

Spending time reading your twitter stats daily

9. Decide how YOU will use Twitter. Here are some ideas:

Share information you are learning (Others might want to learn too)

Share your own blog posts and articles

Share great posts and articles writing by other people

Follow key people in align in your target market to find out what they think is important

To follow media coverage

10. Have Fun. Aftercall – if you can do it with joy – is it really something you want to be doing?

Two really cool benefits of using Twitter for me personally:

I love the time line that twitter creates. It creates a story for me – look back on the path I took for the week. What I focused on and what was pulling my attention. I am loving the story telling effect that Twitter provides

I am also appreciating the value of having access to other tweeters who can give me research information, feedback, and access to the pattern language that people use to describe problems. I am finding it very useful as I fine-tune my own marketing messages about the services I provide.

In the end you have to decide for yourself if Twitter is something you want to use – and if you are aligned with the benefits in the effort of participating with all the souls you will come in contact with.

Finding low cost graphics for blogs an websites can be easy if you have the right resources.

If you are doing things yourself:

My main source for royalty free graphics is Istockphoto. Depending on the size of the image you are charged a certain number of credits to purchase an image. Most small images for the web are just a dollar or two – and a large file for printing may cost you 10 to 15. All in all – great value when you need to create an impact in your marketing material.

Another source is 123rf.com

123RF has a very large selection of free images they offer which are offered on a time-limited basis – definitely worth taking a look as the “just right” image may be right there waiting for you.

If you are looking to have someone help you with your graphic marketing materials there are a number of sources for which you can find economical help depending on what your needs are:

Try these folks:

99Designs.com

99designs connects clients needing design work such as logo designs, business cards or web sites to a thriving community of over 17,000 designers.

Elance.com

Elance is not just for graphic design – but also great to find writers here.

Guru.com – also has a very large freelancer data base

Outsourcing your design work can save you a lot of time and frustration if you are not an expert with graphic programs and up with best practices – and at the same time – it can also cost you some time and energy when working with outside suppliers.

A couple of quick tips:

Don’t just accept the 1st offer you get in response to your request – as some of the folks on these data bases – respond to everything – and sometime they don’t read what they are responding to. I often put a codeword in the post – and ask any reply to include the code word in the response – that way I know I am not getting just an auto-response.

So some smart best practices are often a great idea.

Things like:

not paying full balance until the work is completed to your satisfaction – Keep the funds in escrow ready for the work to be completed

not writing a positive recommendation until the work has been completed

find someone who you like and who is efficient – and then use them

be very specific about B timescales, quality required, layout etc – and renegotiate after anything changes

I watched today as twitter messages streamed in -telling of the earthquake that happened today California. The messages came in just moments after folks were feeling their offices and homes shake. It was amazing to me – that I was witnessing the feelings and emotions of those I am connected to. 9 or so minutes later – across one of the TV’s in our office – came the notices of the earthquake. What was missing in the newscast was the experiential reports. The newsy version seemed flat – whereas the content in the tweets were multi-dimensional. They were extremely human. And I felt as one with them.

Now that I am truly converted from hesitancy to eagerness. I will make a post of some of the tips and tools I have been related to using twitter to make connections.

Quite a few enhancements are included in this update

Enhancements for collaboration, previous post version options, restore earlier version.

A press this button – to capture quotes, text, images or embed video.

A place to add caption for images.

A theme preview – so you can see how things look – before you activate a theme

Also an option – to store images to your own computer. (Gears)

Plus a whole whack of smaller enhancements – plug ins, image galleries and avatar options.

Lot’s of good stuff in this enhancement.

Brain is excellent for doing non-treed mind maps. Me personally, I am a daily user of MindManager – which helps me organize using a treeing format. But for my own personal learning of complex subjects I use a non-treed mind map.

If you want to watch an excellent use of non-treed mind mapping and you have 15minutes to spare- give this video a look (its in 5 sections of about 3minutes each)- and see how you could use this kind of brain approach – is could be an excellent format for story telling.

Learn more about The Brain Mind Mapping Software – you can go to their main website at www.TheBrain.com

What it does: If you are into "Law of Attraction techniques" this is a fun little tool. Just program in your intention statements after you download the free software – and then notice how it helps will awareness focus on what you intend for yourself.

So, got some marketing related intention statements you would like to rehearse or focus on? This might be a great tool for you.

Find out what top marketers belief about them selves, about marketing, about their markets – and model those beliefs through practicing them. This is a super tool for this.

I have had it downloaded for 1 day – and already see the benefits. One of the stock statements is an intention to sit up straight. I love it and find myself doing it more.

My Experience: Mark Joyner is giving free access to this "Blogging for Fun and Profit" course in exchange for folks mentioning in their blogs – An interesting concept in the way it gets folks to take action towards success. For anyone who doesn’t know Mark – He has some very effective course ware called Simpleology that helps folks to take more effective action towards their goals. In this case, Mark is asking folks to evaluate the product for free – in exchange for links to their product squeeze page. At first glance – this seems like a new-to-me tactic to help them increase page ranking – back links etc. The way Mark is doing this – might indeed be a very good way to create some "viral action" on this blogging training course.

It’s good to be clear on what you are looking for in a virtual assistant before hiring one. For example, there is a distinction between looking for a VA that can be an extension of your brand and one that is doing strictly admin tasks and working on information technology tasks. They have different skill sets. You will also find that a lot of VA’s specialize in a couple different areas.

Here are some online sources of Virtual Assistants:

www.getfriday.com -Overseas assistance – lower cost
www.ivaa.org – virtual Assistant Networking Association
www.virtualassitanceu.com – you can submit a request for proposal and receive info from many different VA’s in training.
www.vacertification.com

Google " Virtual Assistant Training" and you will get a few options – and your biggest assistance would to be to ask for a referral from someone. The very best way to find an excellent VA is to ask for and get referrals.

Expect to pay 30-60/hr and to commit to a retainer for Virtual Assistants.

Here are a couple of Virtual Assistants I have been referred to:’
Virtual Accurracy
http://www.victoriabusinesssolutions.com/

My experience: If you want your freebies, some of which are original products in this promo, you need to “opt-in to each one to get them. You will also be offered OTO (back end offers which you are free to decline) You have the option to browse and just request those that most interest you and you have the option of staying subscribed to the marketers list – or unsubscribe at anytime. If you are organized in your email system – these give aways can be an effective way to pick up tools of need. I did notice a couple of the links are already broken – so I would definately get your gifts soon.

The Marketing Blurb: "The great thing about Reader, is it lets you follow sites more effeciently than you could just by visiting them directly"

What it is: A free feed (rss) reader

What it does: provides a central reading place for all the newsfeeds you are interested in. A nice drag and drop function lets you easily organize folders and move feeds between folders and well as re-order thing sup and down your list. One of the nice functions of this reader is that there is no software to install

Product link: Google Reader

My Experience: I have used NewsGator and for longest time now Bloglines for my online feed reader. What is different about Google’s reader frankly is that it seems easier to read – and anything that makes my life easier – I am all over it.

The Marketer: VistaPrint

The Marketing Blurb: "VistaPrint is the easy design and print solution chosen by more than 11 million people worldwide."

What it Does: Anything from Business cards, Corporate Identity items, promotional pieces, return address labels and stamps etc.

The Product Link: VistaPrint

My Experience: If you have been around a while – you’ve probably seen the ads from VistaPrint for 250 free cards and that has prompted you to take a look at some of their templates – and if you are like me – you have probably wanted something more unique and creative.

Something that not many folks know is that you have the option of putting your own business card design in to the online system – and have your cards, brochures or whatever printed. You can do it all yourself if you have a good handle on good design, graphics and branding – or better still – outsource it and then when you get the file back from the designer you can upload it into vista print. Just give your designer the VistaPrint template to work from.

The process is easy to do – easy to follow and at the end you get a very professional product. For example with the business cards, great card stock, coating, cutting and colours make for a great image supported by these cards.

I like to remember that if folks are like me – the save business cards – I have a collection of them from the 80’s that I still refer too.

What it is: A free 118 page e-book, down loadable

What it does: This e-book gives a nice overview of an effective product launch after you have created your product : creating buzz, contacting JV partners and affiliates, creating a solid marketing funnel – and more importantly a story of the post launch phase (7days + ) after your launch – and through story telling – including some of the money-costing mistakes Alex made and some of the structures of the ways he kept track and built an effective list of Joint Venture Partners.

There are organizations that will do this for you such as PageRankSubmit.com as well as some others – or if you are like me, you might be interested to to know that you can get direct, targeted traffic and one way links from directories by directly submitting to them.
