Life With Julie and The Kiddos

Already Saturday

2013-08-10T17:03:00.000-05:00

Well this weekend is the no tax weekend and I have been waiting patiently to go shopping. On Friday Paula and I spent over 6hrs at the mall, now that is what you call dedication! Today we went to the Lowe's Build and Grow to make the crop duster, Dusty, from the new Disney film Planes. I think we are going to go see the movie tomorrow. I tried going shopping afterwards but between Ben and the kids it was nothing but whines from them. So we came home and I am making them clean.

Sunday, the day of rest.....kind of.

2013-07-28T20:40:00.001-05:00

Today was Sunday and I woke up not feeling 100%, so I decided I would actually try to rest today. Screw mowing the lawn in the morning or cleaning as much as I could, I slept in till 8:30am (pathetic, I know), refused to make breakfast and then 11am hit. I got hungry and sent Ben for stuff to make tacos. While he was out, I decided to to the Pinterest idea of using painter's tape across a doorway and letting the kids throw things at it. I had bought some ping pong balls from the Dollar Tree, for just this activity. Anyway, the kids loved it, I just wish I had more ping pong balls because that got a little annoying towards the end. I was able to make a yummy lunch of crunchy tacos and Spanish rice for lunch, so I consider it a success. After lunch I wanted to take the kids to the library and let them pick out some new books. Vincent fell asleep in the car, which was nice, we got to actually look around the new library without having to hush a child every 10 seconds. Eileen picked out 7 books and I can not believe they have nothing on how to teach your child to read. So I need some suggestions, please.

Anyway, the reason I originally did start this blog was to tell everyone about good shopping deals. Apparently Target has school supplies for free with some coupons. If you received the Target Mailer with the Back To School coupons or have the Mobile app. You can save $1.00 off 4 Up and Up school items. They have glue sticks, liquid glue, and crayons for $.25, so buy 4 and use the coupon and you get free stuff! Thank You Save at Home Mommy for the updates!

I am thinking of starting a blog for Eileen and the books she gets from the library, kind of like a book report, cute or no?

Christmas in July

2013-07-28T14:33:00.000-05:00

On Saturday we celebrated Christmas in July with a huge feast of turkey, ham, and all the fixings at our wonderful friend, Paula's home. Paula pulled out her teacher pants and had a craft project for the kiddos, they made paper plate snowmen. It was very festive and everyone had a great time, the kids played and got presents, watched some Christmas cartoons, and ate lots of sugar. We came home and were exhausted, luckily the kids fell asleep easily.

Here are some pictures from Christmas In July.

Saturday was also the day my Dad went in to have surgery for skin cancer. So far everything is going well, they cut a lot out from what my Mom has reported. He is at home, laughing and talking up a storm (I guess they have him on some good meds). We will probably go see him around Thursday, I didn't want to take the kids this soon, since the wounds are still very fresh.

We also, had the Lowe's Build and Grow in the morning on Saturday. The kids made a race car with Toy Story Characters. Of course little man took right too it and banged everything together. They had a blast making their cars. We plan to go this coming Saturday to the Home Depot one too.

Whoa, how is it Friday?

2013-07-26T20:28:00.003-05:00

So, this week is already gone. We made it to Story Time at the Pflugerville Library on Monday, which was fun, but it turned out to be the last one for the summer. The kids loved the new library in Pflugerville, it is very nice. They listened to the stories and then made little mice masks. Vincent and Eileen had their dance classes. We made it to Ikea on Tuesday with our friends, that was an adventure. Wednesday I picked up Mom and kidnapped her, she was more than willing to come this go round. I thought the Target Toy Clearance was going to happen, but it didn't. I was able to get some deals but nothing great. I put a tree out for the kids on Thursday for Christmas in July and they have been having fun singing Christmas Carols and playing with the toys I gave them. We took Mom back today, Friday, and it was hot in Lockhart, I have a migraine now and I am not sure if it was from the heat or from having Mom, Eileen, and Vincent constantly talking to me for the past three days. Anyway, tomorrow we are having our Christmas in July feast with our great friends! I am making the dressing with gravy and bringing a pecan pie. I am super excited about that!

Here are few pictures I did take.

Eileen let me french braid her hair, I just have to work on getting the sides even.

Fast Friday

2013-07-19T22:53:00.002-05:00

Today seriously flew by, I swear I got up and then it was 9:45am and I did not sleep in, I was up and about by 7:30am. Any who, we actually got a lot of errands done today, I managed to use my Gymbucks today, the outlet mall had amazing deals, I walked out with 3 bags full of clothes for $100. We hit Joanne's for their coupon extravaganza, made it to Pint Size Polka, went to the toy store, and made dinner for friends. Considering I am suppose to have a garage sale in the morning, I got a lot done.

So, it seems it is crazy sales lately at the stores. Target is about to have their large 75% off toys this coming Thursday, back to school sales happening everywhere, and Once Upon a Child is having their fill a bag sale July 27th. Seems like I am going to be spending a lot of money.

Manic Monday, Seriously

2013-07-15T20:53:00.000-05:00

Today, which is Monday, seriously flew by. With the excitement of it only getting into the 80's today and rain in the forecast, I was a ball of energy. Vincent had dance at 4pm, so I knew I had to keep the kiddos busy. I wanted to clean the bathroom from the weekend painting fiasco, so I got the great idea of doing the shaving cream paint in the bathtub to keep the kids occupied while I cleaned up. We also made red velvet cupcakes just for the heck of it.

Shaving Cream Paint
what you need:
Dollar Store Shaving Cream (I used the strawberry smelling one)
Food Coloring
Spoons
Bowls
Painting accessories

I separated the shaving cream into separate bowls and added different colors to let the kiddos play with stirring it. Then we headed off to the bathroom to paint my tub. Vincent found a brush that you use to brush bar b que sauce on things, so I let him use that as a brush and Eileen just used a paint brush I had laying around still. The kids had a blast and I wish I could post more pictures but little man was naked.

Speaking of being naked, after they had their thrill with the paint, they sat down for a cartoon. Or so I thought, I was finishing up the bathroom and then I come out to Vincent stark naked on the couch in headstand leaning off the couch watching TV. He saw me, flipped over and proceeded to do that over and over. It was hilarious and yes I did get pictures and video for blackmail later on. Guess I will have to put that boy in gymnastics soon. He didn't do to well in dance class today, but I think he was tired. He had taken his nap early on in the day, I will try a later nap next week. Now bring on Tuesday, it is supposed to be cool weather again!

Weekend Recap

2013-07-15T20:36:00.002-05:00

Well, this past weekend was very busy. I had intended to do nothing on Saturday but around lunchtime I got a surge of energy and decided let's paint the bathroom. I started painting and was not impressed to much with the color. We have decided to do these purples for the master bath and bedroom and I hope the bedroom comes out nicer than the bath. It is not a bad color, I just thought they would have more gray to them. Here are some pictures of what it looks like.

As you can see from the last picture, we are not very good painters, the ceiling looks terrible. I guess we are going to paint it too, just to cover up our mistakes. Other than that I hope that will be all for the bathroom. I ended up going to Target on Sunday and buying a silver/white shower curtain that looks nice and then the plum rugs brings in the richness. It looks a lot lighter than the color actually is.

As for the kids this weekend, I am not really too sure what they did, between painting the bathroom, mowing the lawn and a few other chores I was not being a very good mother. I however got a bunch of stuff done that I am happy about.

And if you are not here, you won't believe this weather. Saturday was in the 100's, Sunday was in the low 90's and it felt amazing and today it was in the 80's! What is going on? We are in Texas, it is supposed to be sweltering this time of the year! I mean I will take these temperatures any day, it is amazing, just wish I hadn't gotten this bug in me to do chores.

Is it Saturday, yet?

2013-07-12T20:55:00.000-05:00

Thursday and Friday flew by like a blur. Thursday was 7/11 which meant free slurpees, we could not pass that up. We had a lovely lunch with Paula and Joshua at Luby's and then followed it with slurpee's at a local Seven Eleven. The rest of the day was just running errands with Mom so it was all fun and games.

Today, which is Friday, was Vincent's make up 2.5yr appointment, it went well, he performed on command and got all good marks. He is 36inches and 30lbs now, so if you want a workout, try carry him around for an hour. Today was also, Cow Appreciation Day, so free Chick Fil A if you dressed like a cow. We managed to have lunch and dinner at Chick Fil A, so yeah, NO COOKING for me! Vincent wasn't having the dressing up for lunch but he did go for it at dinner time, too bad I didn't get any good pictures of it. We rounded out the day taking Mom back home and Vincent has now decided he loves to swing. He spent the majority of his time switching back and forth between the swings and then playing tea party with Eileen inside.

Here are a few pictures of our adventures.

Two Days, Rolled into One

2013-07-10T21:10:00.002-05:00

So we finally got cable back on Tuesday! Woo Hoo, now I can let the TV babysit the kiddos....well sort of. Anyway, Tuesday was also, Eileen's first day back in dance class, she is now in Combo II and she was beaming ear to ear for being in the older girls class. We attempted to make macaroni necklaces, but two problems occurred, the first being that I did not have macaroni and the second being Vincent. We ended up using penne pasta and wagon wheels, that got scattered by Vincent and eventually some consumed by him also. We ended the day by playing with silly string, but I think I was the only one actually enjoying it.

Wednesday we headed out to Lockhart, where Mom decided to get her hair cut and the kiddos too. That took way longer than we expected and Shaggy Vincent did not get his hair cut. The kids had a ball playing with Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle Ken, and Ashley. They were wore out on the ride home and Mom came home with me. I was able to run away with my Mom to Salvation Army to round out the day. Not too bad for two really fast days. Tomorrow is July 11 or 7/11, so Free Slurpees! We will be hanging out with friends and fun is sure to follow!

Rough Start Monday

2013-07-08T20:27:00.000-05:00

Today was a rough start in the morning, Vincent had a well check appointment that I thought was at 10:30am, but it turned out it was supposed to be at 9:30am, so that got rescheduled. I then decided to go grocery shopping and ended up spending way too much money. The afternoon was pretty lame because it rained all morning until about 2pm, so water balloon pinatas didn't happen. Around 3pm, we started to get ready to go to Vincent's dance class and the day turned out better.

Vincent woke up from a long nap in a good mood, so when I mentioned his dance class he was excited about going. I found his train backpack and had him put his ballet shoes in there, he was so proud. We put the backpack on and headed for the car. When we got to the dance studio he was all giggles walking in with his backpack, he sat down and let me put the ballet shoes on without a fuss too. When the teacher opened the door, he bolted in and took a seat, no tears at all, he called for me once and I reassured him he would have a good time. He didn't really participate much but he stayed in there. I couldn't really see, since apparently all the other kids had to have mommy and daddy watching at the window. He came out all smiles and asked to go back tomorrow. So, YEA!!! dance class is a success!

Dinner turned into a flop, I was going to make lentil burgers, but they did not stay together very well and I didn't even attempt to taste them, we just had leftovers. Since Vincent did so well, I told the kids we could go get snow cones, which were delish. Then when we got home we had a small water balloon fight.

Now for the pictures.

Tye Dye Shirts

2013-07-07T19:02:00.003-05:00

Today we made Tye Dye shirts. Thanks for the Goodwill site for some instruction (which I did not follow very well), they seem to be coming out pretty well. Currently one shirt is sitting in the vinegar and salt solution to set the colors and that will be the only shirt, I ran out of vinegar.

As for the kiddos, they seemed to enjoy coloring the shirts, Eileen really got into it, Vincent was just not happy with anything. It was his nap time, I really need to get better at doing things either after he falls asleep or when he wakes up.

What we used:

Boys size 4 Fruit of the Loom white t-shirts package of 5
Sharpie's
rubbing alcohol
turkey baster
plastic cups
pony tail holder (I couldn't find rubber bands)
white vinegar
salt

Apparently you are supposed to draw on the shirts before you put the cups on. The first three shirts, I did not follow that, I set the cups up and let the kiddos color on that surface. I like the way those turned out better, just not as much on those shirts as the ones we decorated that were flat.

What you are supposed to do, decorate the shirts, place the cups under the drawing, and use an eye dropper to put alcohol on the design to make it bleed. Let the shirts dry, then soak them in a solution of vinegar and salt for an hour, then dry in the dryer to set the color. Seems pretty easy, right?

Let's see what else happened today, we cleaned out my car, it looks nice for right now. I made lentils in the crock pot, they are pretty bland, but I got Ben to eat some. No comment so far on how they were from him. I also made a trip to the Dollar Tree store minus the kiddos, I got a lot of stuff for the week! We are going to be busy, busy, busy. Tomorrow, little man has a well check (they do 2.5yr old well checks now) and he starts Creative Movement tomorrow too! I am excited about it, I hope he stays in the class by himself! I plan to do the water balloon pinatas tomorrow too!

Now for some pictures.

Home

2013-07-06T20:35:00.002-05:00

Ugh, we are finally home. I thought we could make it back in one day from Mississippi, but I did not account for Vincent's tantrums and earth shattering screams that would hit around the Houston area. Needless to say between Vincent and the stupid highway being shut down, we decided to stay in Waller for the night. It was a nice sleep and we all woke up in a better mood for the most part. After we got past Giddings, TX, Vincent had another meltdown, the plus side to this meltdown is that it got me out of a speeding ticket. The officer who pulled us over took sympathy on us and just gave me a warning, I really need to write a Thank You note to him, because I was a B towards him. Anyway, I do plan to write in this blog and keep you all updated on the fun. Tomorrow, I have plans to make tye dye shirts with the kiddos and Monday we are going to make water balloon pinatas! Pinterest should keep me busy.

As for the trip to Mississippi, it was great! I got Ben to drive us to New Orleans and well I was not impressed, that place is nasty, with a capital N. Maybe at night when the filth is hidden, but shudders during the day. The Audubon Aquarium was nice, pricey, but the kids kept entertained. As for Gulfport, it was nice, the beaches were not crowded when we visited them, the Lynn Meadows Children's Museum was awesome, and visiting family is always a plus. On the fourth the kiddos actually stayed up to see the fireworks. I walked them down to the beach and they stared up at the sky in awe and then terror. There was a thunderstorm brewing over the bay, so the thunder kept them close to me. All in all an A+ trip, now for some pictures.

Fun Filled Friday

2013-06-28T20:54:00.001-05:00

Today was a crazy day, filled with lots of phone time with AT&T. I just don't get how they can be so stubborn about giving discounts then when you leave, they give you way more than what you asked for. I seriously would have been happy with just keeping my existing discounts, but no, they made me say screw you, I cancel. Then when I called back, literally an hour later, they gave me a better TV service, better internet, free extra receiver, wireless receivers, and a $200.00 gift card all for the same price we were originally paying. Seriously, AT&T, all I wanted was my original $31.00 discount off U200, but whatever. So, we will see how this all goes, supposedly these prices are good for 12months.

I also had a fantastic lunch with The Coven today, it was nice that we were all able to get together and make a ruckus at Culver's today. Tomorrow our journey to Mississippi begins, so I will try to post at least once on the trip, depends how well the kids take to the relatives. Till then folks, I got to pack!

Third Time is the Charm

2013-06-25T14:54:00.002-05:00

So, I am going to attempt to do this blog once more. Since Lisa will be moving to South Korea, she will need a play by play on the craziness over here and vice versa. Lisa will be documenting her travels on her blog Tea and Travel.

About our lives right now, the kiddos are now 4.5 and 2.5 years old, so life is very busy. We are surrounded by tons of activities and good friends to hang out with. I am trying my best to make as much of our food homemade, again, and I even have a decent vegetable garden growing in the back yard. We have tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, peas, and egg plant growing. I am probably going to have to learn how to pickle with all the cucumbers that the vines are producing. Soon, E, will be going to pre-school, I am excited and sad about it. I am excited about the alone time I will get with, V, but I am going to miss that little girl. Both kiddos will be continuing dance lessons for the summer and next school year. I hope the little man will take to it and enjoy the freedom of class without me this year.

Now onto what has happened in the past 24 hours:

Recent escapades in the garden have been a battle with fire ants that invaded one raised bed. I am assuming they didn't make their home in the other raised bed because I had added cinnamon to the dirt when I made the bed. I think I may have drove them out with the help of the internet and great advice from Facebook friends. I poured 2 cups of club soda on the mound and spread instant grits around the bed. Today when I checked the garden, there was no sign of the little buggers. So here's to hoping that worked!

We made an attempt to go to a story time at Baby Earth today up in Round Rock, but it had been cancelled. I think maybe we are growing out of story time anyway, all the children there were considerably younger than mine. I guess I am going to have to find something else to take them to. For those with little ones, the Facebook Page for Baby Earth , lets you see all the events happening at the Round Rock store.

Well nap time appears to be over, let the fun begin!

A better day

2012-11-28T08:50:00.000-06:00

So today was a bit better. I was able to make a decent dinner, it wasn't all from scratch. I have way to much food in the pantry that is 'pre-prepped' food. But besides that, the pork tacos came out pretty good. I still have a ton of left overs, but my Dad will take care of that.

Ingredients:

Left over pork roast, about 1 1/2lbs
1/2 cup of mushrooms
5 green onions
1 tsp of ground cumin
1 tsp of garlic powder
Salt and Pepper to taste
1 cup of water
Cooking spray

1. Chop onions and mushrooms to your liking.

2. Spray the bottom of a pan and saute the mushrooms and onions till tender.

3. Add pork (my pork was falling apart, so I just broke it up as I put it in the pan).

4. Add spices and water, and give the mixture a good stir.

5. Cover and let simmer on a med-low setting till it is hot, mine took a good 45minutes to get hot.

I made rice with garbanzo beans to serve with it, and Eileen made cupcakes for desert. The rice I used was a Spanish rice mixture and I just add a can of garbanzo beans to it, so tasty.

Ben liked it, the kids ate the rice, but that is usually all they eat anyway.

As for Elfie, she pulled out Candyland and played with some of the toys around the house. She recruited Pig Bunny, Rudolph, and Greg the Nutcracker.

Trying to be homemade

2012-11-27T14:55:00.000-06:00

Well day 2 of being homemade kind of sucked, since I had a Frito pie for lunch, but it was tasty! I did try to make a pork roast with cinnamon apples, a recipe I borrowed from Cross-Fit + Paleo. I didn't have a pork loin, but used a pork roast instead and used Granny Smith Apples. It didn't turn out too hot, the apples turned into nothing and the roast had hardly any seasoning, so I didn't take any pictures. I consider it a FAIL. The plus side of it was that the roast was extremely tender and moist. So tonight, with the left over roast, I am going to try and make some pork tacos.

As for Elfie, she was busy making a popcorn garland last night, but she ended up eating most of it......oops.

She also, did not dig Revolution, although I can't really blame her, the show is starting to tick me off.

How to Make a Popcorn Garland

What you need:
Bag of Popcorn - the plain kind with no butter works the best.
Dental Floss - minty floss smells nice
Metal Needle - regular old sewing needle

All you have to do is, string the floss through your needle and start threading the popcorn through, just be careful not to eat too much of it. I have even seen, where people add little red berries between, which makes it a little more festive.

Christmas Homemade

2012-11-25T23:36:00.002-06:00

Hello All,

I wanted to start doing this blog again and hopefully inspire myself to be more creative and help myself get into better shape for the new year. The holidays are upon us and I am hoping to make it to the end of the year by making mostly everything from scratch. Also, we have an elf of the shelf that has invaded our home, so I will be sharing our ideas and reactions from the kiddos. Day one of made from Scratch food starts tomorrow! Wish me luck.

Tonight our elf, Elfie, made some paper snowflakes and attached them to the ceiling fan.

So, I found out tonight, that I am terrible at making paper snowflakes, hence there are only 3 made. My husband ended up folding the paper for me and I was able to cut two.

We used this tutorial from Garden Mama to make the snowflakes. Good luck, they would be really cute as a garland.

HEB Meal Deal

2012-07-27T10:53:00.001-05:00

So, I went into HEB today for a few things and found a pretty sweet deal on fajitas. The meal deal is for seasoned beef, pork, or chicken fajitas. I bought a package of the chicken fajitas for $6.84 and got a 2 liter Big Red, Isadora Refried Beans, Herdez Salsa, Kraft shredded cheese, and HEB tortillas for FREE. All the free things totaled $8.53, so I saved more than I spent, plus it is all stuff we will eat! I am going to go make my fajitas for lunch and savor every bite! Enjoy!

Making Play Dough

2012-07-25T20:55:00.000-05:00

We made play dough, it is very salty though. Eileen, enjoyed making it but she did not like playing with it, she said it smelled. So I am thinking of adding for lavender or vanilla for the next batches.

What You Will Need:

1 cup flour

1 cup water

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

1/3 cup salt

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

food coloring

It is quite a lot, so use a good size sauce pan, and add flour, cream of tarter, and salt (make sure you use all that salt, it helps with the stickiness). Then add the water and vegetable oil, turn your burner on Medium, keep stirring. It will start lumpy but after a few seconds it will smooth out, add in your food coloring and stir a little more, then Voila you have play dough. It takes like 5 minutes to do and makes quite a bit as you can see in the pictures below.

Cheese Steak Dinner

2012-07-10T12:26:00.001-05:00

Last night, I made what we call Philly Cheese Steaks, and I know they are not true Philly Cheese Steaks, but you get the idea. They are so yummy and cheap to make. The recipe I make, is enough for my husband and myself with enough left overs for the next day.

What you need:

Half a Bell Pepper
Half a Onion
Mushrooms - I usually use a whole container.
2 cups Mozzarella Cheese
Soy Sauce or Teriaki Marinade
1lb of some thinly slice beef, I used sirloin this last time, normal skirt steak works well too.
Hoagie Buns or whatever bread you prefer.

Step One: Marinade your meat in the soy sauce or Teriaki the night before, or if you are like me, during the day works too.
Step Two: Slice your bell peppers and onions into strips.
Step Three: Heat your pan, add your meat, and start browning your meat. You can add any spices here if you want. I don't because the soy sauce is enough for our taste.
Step Four: Once your meat is almost cooked, add your bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms. Place the lid on and let simmer.
Step Five: Once the veggies are cooked down, add your cheese and stir and SERVE!

This is super easy to make and so yummy. It takes all of about 10 minutes to actually cook, which is nice. In the pictures below, I didn't have any hoagie bread, so we just used slice bread, it was still yummy. This was actually one of Vincent first foods, he had the bread soaked in the juice, he totally gobbled it up too.

Rainbow Rice

2012-07-09T15:55:00.000-05:00

Well, thanks to Pinterest, I have been finding all sorts of cool things to try with the kiddos. I decided to do the Rainbow Rice, because I hate sand. My kids, like all kids, love digging in sand and well I can't stand it. I think it is just so gross, cats poop in sand, animals in general do nasty things in there, it sticks to everything; can you see that I don't like sand! Anywho, I saw the Rainbow Rice idea and thought, that is awesome.

what I did:
4 cups of Rice
2 tbs of Food Coloring
3 tbs of rubbing alcohol

Throw above ingredients into a ziploc bag and shake it like a milkshake. We put ours out to dry for a few days, just because we had time to, but it said to let dry for at least 24 hrs. Then play with it! It was a fun to make with the kiddos and fun to play with.

The below picture was after 2 days of drying, so if you are a worry wort about stains, be cautious.

The kiddos, didn't actually play with it till about 5 days after we had made the batches and as you can see, it still got food coloring everywhere. It worked out fine, outside, because I just turned the pool on for them to rinse off.

Vivo's Mexican Resturant

2012-06-30T11:15:00.001-05:00

I had a Groupon to use at Vivo Mexican Resturant up on 620. So since it was the start of my weekend off; Vincent, Lisa, Ben and myself, went to dinner there. I have to say that I was very impressed by this place. It was just a pleasant place to look at, they had some awesome art on the wall, it was dark and very romantic (minus my screaming kid), and the food was mighty tasty. They had a wall full of candles, Lisa and I were discussing it, and Vincent turned around to look and point at the wall and discuss it with us too. So that must say something for the place, when an 18 month old admires their decor and comments in a rather grown up babble. For a date night, it would be perfect, it had reasonable prices without the groupon and it had slow but attentive waiters, they were not trying to rush you out the door. So, go check it out!
