Hopefully, the report is false. If it’s true, Google should rethink its strategy. Chrome OS, a browser-based operating system that stores all of a computer user’s applications and data online, is a bit too fanciful for today’s mobile-Internet reality, which isn’t always reliable.

“Chrome OS was developed for highly and persistently connected devices,” says IDC mobile analyst Susan Kevorkian. “In that context, the device and the operating system are highly reliant on a dependable connection. But the reality for many consumers today, even with mobile broadband, is that connectivity isn’t as reliable as we’d like it to be, either for Wi-Fi or mobile broadband.”

If Google is planning to launch a tablet device in the near future, it should bypass its embryonic Chrome OS and instead go with Android, the company’s other mobile operating system that’s taking the smartphone market by storm.

Android, by comparison, is a more pragmatic solution for today’s wireless world. “Android is the most viable media-tablet operating system to compete with Apple’s iPad. It has many of the right elements, including an app store associated with it,” says Kevorkian, who adds that IDC’s conversations with mobile device vendors indicate that Chrome OS isn’t a viable option for today’s tablets.

“We think it would be wiser for Google to pick its battles and put all of its chips behind Android at this point,” Kevorkian adds.

According to PCWorld, Google, of course, hasn’t announced plans to introduce a Chrome OS-based tablet. But a report this week from tech news site Download Squad predicted that Google-branded Chrome slate could arrive in time for the holiday shopping season.

Pandigital try Android Gadget based Novel tablet eReader

Nate Hoffelder of The Digital Reader checked out the original Novel both before and after the software repair. Hoffelder blogged that the fix did a lot to improve WiFi connectivity and touchscreen responsiveness, but that page turns in the Reader and Library applications remained slow. Hopefully, Pandigital has dealt successfully with those issues in the new device.

With 2GB of internal storage, the new iteration of the 7-inch device offers twice the built-in memory of its predecessor, which had a white chassis. The new Novel device model PRD07T20WBL1 is also lighter, weighing in at 11.8 ounces.

Pandigital is now giving its Android OS-based Novel tablet eReader a second try with the announcement of a new version, this time outfitted in a black chassis and Barnes & Noble eBookstore integration. Some have suggested, though, that the gizmo might work better for those seeking a general tablet than an eReader, particularly with pricing tumbling down on established eReaders such as Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook.

The first Novel gadget made news when Kohl’s started selling it for $260 after Pandigital had already announced an MSRP of $199.99 upon initial product launch in May.

Although both the new and original versions of the Novel have access to the Barnes & Noble eBookstore, many have found the specs to be more along the lines of a tablet PC than an eReader. Intel will purchase all of McAfee’s stock

Ashok Kumar, analyst for Rodman & Renshaw, said the merger will make Intel more competitive in the face of rivals such as Qualcomm, a company specializing in wireless communications technology.

“Given [Intel's] position in the ecosystem, it behooves them to have the expertise and domain knowledge in all the three key vectors,” said Kumar, referencing Otellini’s statement about the three pillars: energy efficiency, connectivity and security.

Kumar said the Intel-McAfee merger might prompt Qualcomm (QCOM, Fortune 500) to bolster its position in the market by pursuing a similar deal.

The deal has been approved by boards of directors at both companies, and must be approved by McAfee shareholders and government regulators for it to become final.

“In the past, energy-efficient performance and connectivity have defined computing requirements,” said Intel Chief Executive Paul Otellini. “Looking forward, security will join those as a third pillar of what people demand from all computing experiences.”

Intel Corp., the world’s largest chipmaker, said Thursday it has agreed to acquire security software maker McAfee for $7.68 billion. Intel (INTC, Fortune 500) said it will purchase all of McAfee’s stock for $48 per share in cash. McAfee’s stock surged 58% at the start of trading. Intel stock slipped 2%. Dell and Hewlett Packard Report Earnings

Dell is expected to report earnings of 30 cents a share on revenue of $15.2 billion for its fiscal second quarter. Gross margins are expected to be about 17.7 percent. HP is expected to report earnings of $1.07 a share on revenue of $30.46 billion for its fiscal third quarter with gross margins of about 23.5 percent. The elephant in the room for both companies is PC demand. Reports from the supply chain front in Asia indicate that PC demand is slowing. However, much of the angst around PC sales revolve around consumers. Dell makes most of its money from corporate customers.
Stifel Nicolaus analyst Aaron Rakers sets the scene:

Despite increased/justifiable angst over PC demand dynamics over the past few weeks (largely consumer driven), our checks have remained net-positive on Dell’s trends for F2Q11. We remain optimistic with regard to a gradual corporate PC upgrade cycle and Dell’s execution and share gains in the x86 server market (capitalizing on a lead with Nehalem-EX platforms; industry checks point to some availability slippage at HP). We expect Dell’s results to outperform HP in both PC and servers.

Meanwhile, Dell’s focus on the enterprise means it has more runway for Windows 7 upgrades.

Microsoft reported that about 15% of PCs ran Win7 OS exiting June, vs. 10% exiting March. Dell noted less than 5% of commercial PC customers had migrated to Win7/Office 2010 exiting F1Q11.

In fact, Rakers notes that Dell could become the top enterprise PC dog if the stars line up well. According to ZDNet, there will be an interesting compare and contrast exercise as both Dell and Hewlett Packard report earnings Thursday. HP’s quarter performance is largely known since the company announced its results along with the ouster of former CEO Mark Hurd. Dell’s results, due to its focus on the enterprise, may look better than HP’s when it comes to growth.

Android App Been Hit by Malicious Data

An Android app distributed by Google have been hit by malicious data and collecting individual data of millions of users then sent to China servers.

Confirming Apple’s uniquely hard stance on mobile protection in the iPhone App Store. The app “picks up a user’s browsing history, text messages, your phone’s SIM card number, subscriber identification, and even your voice mail password. It sends the data to a web site, imnet.us. That site is evidently owned by someone in Shenzhen, China,” the report noted.

The data theft was only discovered afterward, through forensics performed by mobile security firm named Lookout which sells virus and malware protection software for Android, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices. The problem was announced at the Black Hat security conference being held in Las Vegas.

The issue recalls a recent AT&T website leak that could hypothetically have enabled a malicious hacker to access 144 thousand of iPad 3G user’s email addresses.

However, the Android app data theft was actually perpetrated by malicious hackers and not just demonstrated by researchers, it involves far more sensitive data, and affected far more victims by more than an order of magnitude.

Exploitable vulnerabilities in the iOS platform have been reported elsewhere, including the Safari browser, but crafting a malicious attack via the browser requires luring users to a malicious site rather than simply distributing a bad app that appears to be useful and genuine.

Lookout chief executive John Hering said in the report that “he believes both Google and Apple are on top of policing their app stores, particularly when there are known malware problems with apps,” but the report noted it’s “unclear what happens” when apps don’t actually do what they represent.
