As a Professional (onsite) Hair & Makeup Artist, I have to be ready for everyone & anything! The most challenging part of my job is making sure that all parties are "speakin' the same language" - This means: When you say, "natural makeup " I know what your version of "natural" is. A photograph is worth a thousand words, and we encourage all of our guests to bring them to appointments.

It can be a challenge for some woman to find pictures that represent their style well. Our media is SATURATED with 18-25 year olds, which can leave the 50 year + community with slim pickings. A great way to find an "inspiration picture" for your big event is to channel your own style icon. Your icon doesn't have to be a Hollywood movie star - It should be someone who's image is admirable, someone who's age is relative to yours, and who's "beauty details" are something you'd like to replicate .

Paula Deen: Paula's hair & makeup are always flawless - She switches between heavy eyeliner (top & bottom) or heavier on top - Either way, her eyes are brightened & become the focus of the look. Which look do you like better?

Helen Mirren: Her stylish bob is never "over done." There is a tendency to "grandma-fy" bobs when a photograph isn't shown to the hairstylist first - To make sure this doesn't happen to you, take a picture of Helen to your next styling appointment and come out looking polished, not 20 years older!

Barbara Walters: Babbs wears her hair pushed back on the sides exposing her latest earrings. *Note that she doesn't wear a definite part, instead, her hair is styled towards her face with volume * She tends to wear a light, yet smoked eye at the corners , with partial liner on the bottom.

Raquel Welch: this bombshell is always glamorous! Between her wigs and "bronzey" makeup, she is a fun style icon with numerous looks and a youthful glow. Take a lead from Rachel and try bronzer instead of blush!

McKenzie: MAC lipgloss. I have at least 20 tubes, almost all of them in the same color - they're in my makeup bags, my car, my desk, coffee table, bedside table, suitcase, everywhere. I love the color of Little Vi, I love the texture, consistency, the fact that it doesn't have much scent. The way it matches my skin tone. It's the best!

Kira: What is your fave new beauty product?

McKenzie: My favorite new beauty product... I borrowed some Love and Toast lotion from a friend and I am a convert! I am in absolute adoration of Honey Coconut hand cream and eau de perfume. It's my new signature scent!

Kira: What is an essential part of your beauty routine?

The Classic: Half Up Style

I have to admit that the anticipation of what hair style Kate Middleton would choose was killing me! From the moment I heard she had a team of 4 hair dressers preparing her, I was on the edge of my seat. In the end, Kate chose the classic & beautiful "half up/half down" style.

Kate is known for wearing her long hair down , she noted that for her wedding day "She wanted to feel like herself" - I think this look is a perfect way to balance the glamor of the occasion, while staying true to her trademark "look."

I love the volume through the top! A perfect compliment to the 1936 Queen's "Halo" tiara from Cartier. * Kate's hair was given volume in the crown and sides, pinned back at the ears, and loosely curled. * This style shows off the beautiful v-neck of her dress and elegant earrings. It has been, and will continue to be a favorite style in Bridal fashion.

Bronzer is a must have for every makeup kit - It not only gives your skin tone "warmth," it is also essential for contouring your face!

MUA Tricks:

To make cheek bones appear more prominent: Sweep bronzer in the "hollow" of the cheek (just under the bone) on into the hair line.

note how the cheek bones are further defined through the use of a darker tone under the bone

To slim the face: Apply bronzer under cheek bones, and around entire hairline and under jaw line.

slimming technique: note darker/tanner areas along hairline and jaw

Where ever depth ( the bronzer ) is in contrast with your natural color, a reduction will appear. This means the highlighted / natural color will "come forward" where the tanned areas will recede/ appear farther away - creating a slimming effect!

One of the biggest challenges for Brides is keeping their lip color on the day through! S&C Artists always recommend carrying a "touch up" color with you - Whether you're a cherry chapstick girl, gloss, or stick, having your favorite color on hand will be a lip-saver!

For those of you wanting a long lasting color, we have tricks for you!

Trade Secret numero uno:

Apply pressed powder to your lips, & follow with full coverage of the entire lip with lip liner, finish with gloss, chapstick, or lipstick for added va-voom!

TS dos:

Use a "long wear lip color" or use a "lip stain" - The formulas have drastically improved since their beginnings! I can remember being in terror when my "long wear" circa 1998 dissolved away in the center of my lip, and left me looking like I had (only) red lip liner on the rest of the night! Those days are over, I recommend: S&C Long wear lip creme (color on 1 side, clear gloss on other ) and for a kiss of color, I love Benefit's "Benetint" - It's like having crushed rose petals on your lips!

TS Tres:

Use a Primer! It's true: From foundation, to eye shadow, to lipcolor, there's a Primer for all of your beauty need!. I recommend Urban Decay's "Lip Primer Potion" - Think of it as a "clear" lip pencil with hydrating ingredients!

Jeckyll & Hyde Hair? Clarify it!

Do you have a "Sunday Shampoo?" - You should! A Sunday Shampoo is a cute name for a "Clarifying Shampoo." Along with your favorite shampoo, a clarifying shampoo is essential for your beauty routine. These gentle, yet effective cleansers are typically used once a week (hence the "Sunday" reference) to remove build up or pollutants from your hair and scalp.

When To Clarify:

1x a week for normal product use (twice a week if you consider yourself a product junkie)
After swimming in chlorinated water - Preferably while your hair is still wet with the pool water *Chlorine can "crystalize" when dry, which makes it very difficult to remove without a Professional's assistance.*
Before a chemical service - If your hair fades quickly after a hair color, try a clarifyer to remove mineral build up BEFORE your service (The build up may be blocking the color pigments from penetrating deep enough to last)
After a special event hair-do *The product cocktail that made your hair last the night, might last the month through without a clarifyer*
On vacation - If your hair has taken a vacation of it's own and you are now a slave to it, try a clarifyer - Unsoftened water can leave a heavy mineral residue on hair which often leaves it limp, brittle, and even oily feeling (see reason for faded color above)
Flakes, Dry Scalp, or Dandruff -These can be caused by product or mineral build up on the scalp
If you have "hard" water/no softener/older metal pipes *If you have moved into an apartment and notice that your blonde hair is looking "brassy" or your red is "ruddy," this may be the culprit.
If you have been exposed to air pollution (smog, smoking,etc) - These pollutants will soak into your hair like a sponge and can discolor it, as well as react poorly with future chemical services.
If you have oily skin - This is also the reason for oily hair.

Every professional product line carries a "Sunday Shampoo". Some lines will have 2 to choose from - for example, Paul Mitchell Systems carries "Shampoo 2" which is a gentle, yet effective for "normal" buildup &/or oily skin, and they also have "Shampoo 3" which is more effective on harder to remove minerals and chlorine.

Aveda Sun Care Hair & Body Clea nser - I LOVE the tangerine scent and the condition of my hair/skin after using this effective yet conditioning clarifyer.

Malibu Well Water Action Shampoo - Malibu shampoos, conditioners, and treatments have long been known for treating "build up issues" - From well water, to chlorine, to hair color challenges,Malibu has something for everyone!

Do you love warm, sunny, beach days, but hate what your hair does with them? Living near the beach has taught me a few tricks - I have fine, wavy hair and alot of it! - My hair puffs up when I just think of humidity! Spring showers may not have reached your part of the country yet, but a tropical honeymoon may be in your mists, and I want you to look your best without being a slave to your hair!

I am a huge fan of shampooing every other, or every third day and using dry shampoos in between. A personal favorite of mine is Big Sexy Hair's Volumizing Dry Shampoo - It gives me an awesome texture! This trick is two-fold: First off, it keeps my hair color looking shiny and fresh ( no worry about premature faded ends for me!) Second, because my hair is wavy, my hair actually behaves better when it isn't fresh from the shampoo bowl. The dry shampoos take care of any debris and excess oil while keeping my hair looking, and smelling clean.

Something that I have recently added to my " if ever stuck on deserted island list " is my conditioning ( hair) Beauty Elixir by Orofluido. I love this product! The high quality ingredients and exotic fragrance make my hair feel, smell and look absolutely lovely. I just apply 1-2 drops to my ends when they are (either) wet or dry, and enjoy tangle-free, non greasy, control.

Another fan favorite that is similar to Orofluido is Moroccan Oil. Moroccan Oil is a bit to heavy on my fine hair for daily use, but for those of you with medium to coarse hair or with a heavy coiled curl, - Who need alot of control, this may be just what the Stylist ordered!

Whether it's wine stained or cherry red, I'm a fan. The wonderful news that red lips are leading the trends made me swoon! This luscious look is perfect for a classic and fashion-forward Bride.

The trick to red lips is to find the right shade. There are warm, neutral, and cool reds. Do you know what skin tone you are? - This is a perfect place to start! Ask a professional at a beauty counter to identify your perfect shade.

Tips to help find a red for you:

q: Do you have alot of blue and purple in your wardrobe? Do you tend to get flushed or pink in the cheeks, and have blue eyes?

tip: You probably have a cool skin tone and would look best with a wine or berry red.

q: Do you love the way you look in orange and yellow? Do you have a peachy or golden skin tone? Are your eyes brown, hazel, or green with golden flecks?

tip: You may have warm skin tones. You would look great in a tomato red, or coral red.

q: Do you have olive skin?

tip: Go with a neutral "red red."

As a Makeup Artist who does alot of weddings, I have to make sure my Bride's lip color stays on her! * For longer lasting lipstick, fill in entire lip with a lipliner before lipstick application ( there are also modern lip primers available which will "grab" your color too) Note: Try not to rub lips together after application!

* Buy several lip liners in colors that are similar to your favorite lipstick tone ( This way you can bump up, or simmer down your lipstick's color ) Think day to night...

Fashion faux - pas? - Consider it a necessity to be filed under: "In case of emergency!"

To keep your gorgeous "wedding do" looking spectacular while traveling to your wedding sites, slip a shower cap over it to protect it!

Attention Personal Assistants: Shower caps are a must have in the "wedding - emergency kit."

This Winter is in the record books. Blizzards, snow, wind and rain, it has been a challenge for many to travel in - even if it's from the church to the reception hall. After assisting in a few weddings where couples spent their honey-moons in airports, and elderly guests cancelled their reservation due to driving conditions, I think it's fair to say that there has got to be a better way!

As a Smart & Chic Artist, I have the pleasure of seeing many, MANY wedding venues. If it's in the Twin Cities, or Honolulu, I can probably tell you about it, this is why I want to bring up the " staycation . " Many couples choose this awesome idea for their vows. S&C Twin Cities Artist, "Amber Walker" does beautiful work. Her attention to detail and fun personality made her a crowd favorite at Kate Koschak's wedding! Kate had an amazing wedding with reception at the famed Varsity Theater - the gorgeous photos done by talented Photographer, "Biff Ulm" of Vada Photography show so many intimate details of the day, you almost feel like you were there!

I am a beach baby. The salt air, blue water, and warmth makes my heart sing. Originally from Hawaii, there was a time when snow and Winter sounded amazing and exotic to me! After spending much of my adult life on the "Mainland," I fell in love with a Minnesota man, and had seen my share of brutal winters. When we started planning our own wedding, it was easy - Destination: Hawaii. I wanted an intimate affair, on the beach, with a lovely luncheon at theWaioli Tea Room in Manoa Valley, and warmth - I wanted to be warm - Done & done!

The Destination Wedding has become a "one stop shop." A few clicks on the keyboard, and you can have a wedding planned, and ready to go in less than a few hours! Once you arrive, you unpack and enjoy - right through your honeymoon. I recently interviewed Bride-to-be "Sharon," who has chosen S&C to help with beauty services at her destination wedding. Sharon and her Fiance LOVE Hawaii, and with a brother living on the island of Oahu, they visit often and know their way around. Sharon had great in-site for other couples thinking of having a destination wedding.

Sharon wants an intimate " toes in the sand " wedding, away from the hustle & bustle of Waikiki. She has chosen beautiful Waimanalo Beach - white sand, small islands off shore, clear water -it's perfect! With 4 bridesmaids and groomsmen on board, they sent out 91 invitations - They are expecting 40 will be able to make the trip. To accommodate the loved ones who can't make it, Sharon and her Groom are having a large reception upon their homecoming.

S&C: What has been the biggest obstacle while planning your trip?

Sharon: It hasn't been that bad to plan. So much is on the internet these days and I've been doing most of my correspondence with vendors over email. Plus, we have my brother and other friends there so they've been a huge help. Although, the biggest obstacle has been not being able to see things in-person (the reception venue mostly) and meet with the vendors face-to-face.

Inspiration boards are becoming a necessity of planning for our brides from photos of the cake to chair covers to hair and makeup looks. Last season (2010) it was all about the Eva Longoria and Carrie Underwood hairstyles and makeup, but this year (2011) we predict the inspiration will be from the GLEE girls. Soft, slightly messy and romantic upstyles, like Lea Michele's (top photo) will remain our most requested, but the classic 'Veronica Lake' S-wave downstyle is making a comeback. Dianna Argon's (bottom photo) hair and makeup is an elegant and timeless look for any bride. Don't have long enough hair? We have hair extension specialists on our team or we can add clip-in hair wefts for less than $100. Afraid your bold lip color will fade? We use layering techniques to ensure longevity and carry a line of long wear lip colors.

I have a fortunate pallet - I can eat it all with no worry of allergies or reactions. There are far to many people who aren't so lucky. From dairy, to fish and gluten allergies, I've seen many suffer at a night on the town because they had a limited menu. This can provide a challenge for many couples when planning their wedding menus. I hope to offer a helping hand to you in the form of cupcakes! I know it's not the "end all/cure all," but, it can help end your Reception on a great note.

This smart trend allows everyone to partake and indulge in sweetness!

Cupcakes are having such a huge "comeback" right now that while driving cross country last week, nostalgia got the best of my "health conscience" husband. A Picture is Worth 1000 Words

Our S&C Artists are noted as being some of the best in the business! With all of that experience, it's easy to think that we will know exactly the look you are going for - usually we do - but occasionally the subtle details can literally be lost in translation! I occasionally will joke that I am great at "hair sign language," meaning that with a wave of your hand, or a crinkle of your eyebrow, I know which direction to take your style without seeing a photograph of the desired look.

The mantra of " We won't leave til we get it right " is in every S&C Artist's head - Naturally, we are in this business to make people look, and feel wonderful! To make the task easily achievable, please bring pictures to all meetings with us - Whether it's your trial run, or your big day, a picture will guide us in the right direction. This rings true for everyone in the Wedding party - besides getting the "look" just right, it helps us stay on time. The stress of running late on the wedding day sends everyone over the edge: an ounce of prevention is a pound of cure.

A great way to keep every detail on task is to email pictures from your trial run to your designated Artist. It will provide you with peace of mind and it will prep the Artist - especially if you add a few notes of your own ( i.e. I'd like more volume, I love the curl by my ear, etc ) This is also a great way to save any details that were "shifted" from your inspiration pictures, so they won't be forgotten about on your Wedding Day.

Tips:

1. Bring in a front & back view of the desired hair style/look ( they can be from different pictures/models )

2. Bring a picture of your version " bad wedding hair. "

3. A picture of yourself with a makeup look that you love/or feel comfortable with.

* Our goal is to make you feel pretty!*

Lastly, be creative. You never know where the hair style or makeup look " that will make your heart sing " will come from! Just last weekend, we had a Bridesmaid bring in Paris Hilton's mug shot - The Bridesmaid was right - her hair was great!

If it's Good for a Road Trip, it's Great for a Wedding!

There are so many wonderful vendors of Limos, Party Buses, Ice Cream Trucks, etc - but after hearing this next idea, I'm looking at these type of vehicles in a whole new way! This next great ( money saving ) idea came to me via a lovely Smart and Chic Bride ( Thanks Thyra! ) It was the day of her Bachelorette Party and we were " Snookying " up her hair for the " Jersey Shore " themed party. Rather than renting a " party bus " to carry this fun group around town, her parents were driving them in their RV!

This was " ah-ha " moment... Hmmm, if an RV is perfect for toting a Bachelor / Bachelorette party around, then it's also perfect for moving wedding parties to and fro ceremonies, receptions, hotels - I could go on & on! I love this cost effective and creative idea.

Bonus Tip: Decorate the RV for added fun & surprise!

Kat has an amazing eye for makeup and has an extensive resume.
