Planning travel when you’re tight on time doesn’t need to feel chaotic. With a few practical adjustments and tools, you can organise your trip without missing key details. The trick is to reduce the number of steps it takes to get from decision to action. Instead of second-guessing your choices or juggling too many sources, aim for simplicity and speed. This article describes efficient methods that help people stay on track when preparing for travel under pressure.

Keep Your Essentials in One Place

Efficiency starts with knowing where your important details are. Travel confirmation emails, check-in instructions, loyalty numbers and booking codes often arrive in bits across different platforms. Losing track of any of these slows everything down.

Set up a single travel folder in your email account and use filters to route related messages there automatically. This creates a central spot you can quickly scan. If you’re handling more than one trip or need access to travel documents from different formats, having a reliable tool can simplify that. Some travellers streamline their process with a reliable PDF converter, handy when juggling last-minute bookings and itinerary changes.

Offline access is also worth setting up. Keeping screenshots of booking confirmations and addresses in your phone’s photo album or notes app reduces reliance on patchy connections during the trip. This method is fast and consistent and doesn’t require logging into multiple accounts whenever you check a detail.

Compare Hotels Efficiently Without Getting Overwhelmed

Booking accommodation can drain time fast, especially when every listing looks similar. Focusing on what matters to you makes the decision easier. Instead of browsing dozens of hotels, set specific filters based on your preferences. For example, limit search results by price range, distance from a key location, guest ratings above a certain threshold and amenities you plan to use.

There are plenty of sites that make it easier to view options side by side. Use shortlist features so you can go back and compare only a few promising choices instead of repeating the full search. Avoid falling into the trap of endlessly scrolling. If a hotel meets your practical needs and has consistently good reviews, it’s probably the right one.

Another smart habit is to scan reviews for recurring complaints or praise. If several guests mention noise or cleanliness, that gives more insight than star ratings alone. Time spent scanning for real patterns can help avoid disappointment and reduce backtracking after booking.

Streamline Communication and Confirmations

Sorting out transport times, check-in instructions, and address details takes longer when you’re switching between apps. To keep things smooth, centralise these key bits of info before your trip starts.

Forward all travel-related emails to yourself with consistent subject lines. Labelling them with tags like “Accommodation” or “Transport” helps keep things visible and easily accessible. Some people also find it helpful to create a single travel summary note that includes essential times, booking references and contact details for each leg of the journey.

If your itinerary changes or a hotel requests new information, quick edits are easier when you’re not trying to remember which email held what. That’s why tools that allow flexible document editing or format conversion can make a real difference when confirming or adjusting plans.

It also helps to enable calendar notifications for check-in times and flights. Most email platforms let you do this directly from the message, saving time and ensuring you don’t miss a step.

Smart Packing When You’re Short on Prep Time

Packing quickly doesn’t mean leaving essentials behind. Keeping a ready-to-go kit of basics for frequent travel can reduce the time it takes to get out the door. Toiletries, travel adapters and even snacks can be stored in a designated bag that is always stocked. This prevents last-minute shopping or scrambling.

Instead of starting a packing list from scratch, save a reusable template based on your trip length and purpose. A short city break requires different items from a more extended holiday, so the group lists accordingly. Print them out or keep them on your phone for faster access.

Packing cubes or clear bags make unpacking faster, too, especially when moving between places. This keeps you focused on the trip rather than sorting through your belongings. Consider packing by category: clothes in one cube, tech items in another and health essentials in a separate pouch. It’s a simple adjustment, but it reduces stress at every stage.

Choosing clothing that works across multiple settings can also reduce your needed items. Stick to neutral colours and lightweight fabrics that work well in different temperatures or social settings.

Last-Minute Checks That Save You Trouble Later

Final checks are often skipped when pressed for time, but they can prevent frustrating surprises. Check that your accommodation confirmation matches the address listed online. It’s not unusual for hotel names or contact numbers to change slightly between platforms.

If you’re travelling across regions, look over any travel restrictions or ID requirements. Quickly checking public transport conditions or road closures can avoid unexpected detours. If using ride-sharing apps or taxis, ensure your pick-up spot is clear and accessible.

Weather conditions also deserve a glance. You don’t need a full forecast; you need to know expected temperatures and rainfall. Adjust your packing or itinerary accordingly. For instance, knowing that rain is likely during your arrival window can influence what you wear or how early you leave for your destination.

Finally, double-check your payment methods. Having a credit or debit card that works internationally or offline access to payment apps avoids awkward payment issues when checking in or making local purchases.

Stay Flexible and Travel with Less Stress

Rushed travel doesn’t always allow for perfect planning. That’s why focusing should be on reducing friction rather than controlling every detail. A little structure goes a long way, especially when using tools and habits that do the heavy lifting for you.

Make lists that are easy to reuse. Save templates that cut time on repetitive steps. Keep communication organised. These habits help you make confident decisions faster without going into planning overload.

The next time you have a trip to arrange and the clock’s ticking, apply a few of the steps above. You’ll spend less time chasing tasks and more time enjoying where you’re going.

Remember when I used to live in Austin, Texas? Those were the days – sunshine, warmth, great Mexican food, and of course, Mexican Martini’s from Trudy’s. Life and my locale have moved on, but fortunately it’s possible to get great Tequila in Scotland (I recommend Cool Chile Co for mail-order tequila and mezcal in the UK) so I can recreate this sublime cocktail at home, which, according my friend Claudia, “You should open a cocktail bar based on this cocktail alone.” Trudy’s used to limit customers to ordering just two of these drinks per visit because they are HELLA strong (and so so drinkable). You’ve been warned!

Mexican Martini

Serves 1 generously

Salt

2 ounces reposado tequila

1 ounce Cointreau

1 ounce fresh lime juice

3/4 ounce fresh orange juice

1/2 ounce olive brine

2 olives

Wet half the lip of a martini glass and dip it in salt. Chill the glass if you can. Pour the liquid ingredients into a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Strain into the glass. Garnish with olives on a spear.

Vegetarian Kimchi

Makes 1 large Kilner jar (1 litre)

1 large napa cabbage or Chinese leaf

3 tbsp fine sea salt

1 large onion, chopped

4 spring onions

4 tbsp gochugaru chilli flakes

For the paste mix:

1/2 onion, roughly chopped

3 cloves garlic, chopped

5cm piece ginger, peeled and chopped

1 tsp sugar

Chop the cabbage into large 3cm squares, discarding the stem and core. Place into a large glass or ceramic mixing bowl, and massage in the salt, ensuring it is evenly distributed throughout the pieces. Set aside for 1 hour.

Meanwhile, blend the paste ingredients in a food processor until smooth.

Tip the cabbage into a colander and rinse thoroughly. Drain well and allow to dry a little. It will feel quite limp and soft. Place back into the mixing bowl and add the onion, spring onion and gochugaru. Add the paste mix and, using clean hands, massage through the vegetables to combine thoroughly.

Pack the vegetable mix into a sterilised jar, pushing down well to compact it and avoid air pockets. Leave several centimetres from the top of the jar to allow for expansion during the fermentation process.

Swirl a couple of tablespoons of water around the mixing bowl to collect any paste remaining, and pour into the almost full jar. Seal the top and place in a cool area of your kitchen out of direct sunlight.

Check the jar daily for 3 days, pushing the mix down to release any air pockets and to allow the accumulated liquid to come to the surface. The vegetables need to be submerged beneath the liquid. Seal the lid to cover each day, then refrigerate after 3 days, at which point the kimchi should smell sour but not unpleasant. Keep the kimchi in the fridge, and taste after a couple of days, using once you are satisfied with the flavour development. You may find the flavour needs a couple of weeks to develop enough to your liking. Once fully fermented, the kimchi will keep for up to 6 months (possibly longer) in the fridge.

This is part one of my story about how I achieved freelance freedom through a myriad of side hustles and independent projects that have led me to where I am today. This is only part one, because this story has a lot of layers. But it all started here, with my decision to leave my full time job at a major international bank and have a go at freelance writing.

One of my “Smarter Fitter” philosophies has always been to work towards a life where work equals play. That’s why I delved into the world of freelance writing almost twenty years ago, a side hustle that’s still going strong. It also led to my other side hustle, Writer’s Residence, an online portfolio for writers that lets other writers create a website to market their work. But building that side business is another story for another day – another layer of the freelance cake! I know a lot of you out there dream of writing for a living. So in this post, I want to talk about the virtue of writing portfolios and how they can help anyone launch a successful career as a writer.

What is a writing portfolio anyway? Sounds old school!

A writing portfolio is a curated collection of a writer’s work that showcases their skills, experience, and range. It can serve as a professional representation of the your abilities and provides potential clients, employers, and editors with examples of your past work. Old school portfolios were printed, and may have been delivered in fancy binders. Today, online portfolios are the norm, and just like their printed counterparts, and typically include samples of articles, blog posts, essays, reports, or any other written content.

What did I put in my first writing portfolio?

When I first started out in freelance writing, I knew I needed to show potential editors what I could do. But how to do that when I hadn’t been published before? What a quandary! Here’s where self-publishing is handy, and I don’t mean books. Blogs have become almost the new normal in the publishing world, and those who blog to a high standard are totally justified in using those works as professional writing samples. When I first created my writing portfolio, the writing samples included were largely articles I’d written myself on this very blog. I also looked tangentially for other writing experience to include – research papers, copywriting, newsletters, press releases, and so on. (See how to create a writing portfolio with no experience.)

Amazingly, it worked…

How my writing portfolio helped me launch my freelance writing career

Once I took the time to build out a reasonably complete portfolio, it came down to pitching for work. The portfolio made this process a whole lot easier. When it comes to pitching, short and succinct emails (what some call “letters of introduction”) worked the best. Including a link to the portfolio, or better still, specific writing samples, was a straightforward way to quickly demonstrate my skills.

There’s a great example on LinkedIn, written by a hiring person, on the type of email they look for from a writer pitching for work…

Here’s one of their pitches:

“Hey Steven,
I see you’re looking for writers in the CATEGORY space. I’ve written several articles on CATEGORY – I’ve included 3 links below. Hope you like them!”

Short, to the point emails, that were highly relevant.

(And they got my name right).

It took me 10 seconds to see if they were a good fit.

That’s why they moved forward.

Read more about how I got my first writing job with no experience.

You too can have a writing portfolio!

There are plenty of website builders for writers out there. Naturally I’m biased towards Writer’s Residence, which uses a 5-step framework the will show you how to create an online portfolio in a structured way with little hassle and razor sharp focus on your career objectives.

That said, there are other portfolio website builders out there. You can compare them all in my review of the best portfolio websites for writers.

Set Realistic And Measurable Goals

The foundation of a successful fitness journey lies in setting realistic and measurable goals. Instead of vague resolutions, define clear objectives that are attainable and can be measured over time. For example, aim to walk a certain number of steps daily, increase your weekly workout duration, or achieve specific strength or flexibility milestones.

Diversify Your Exercise Routine

Monotony is a common culprit in derailing fitness resolutions. To keep things interesting and sustainable, diversify your exercise routine. Incorporate a mix of cardiovascular workouts, strength training, flexibility exercises, and activities you genuinely enjoy. This not only enhances physical well-being but also keeps you motivated and engaged.

Leverage Technology for Accountability

Technology can be a powerful ally in your fitness journey. Invest in fitness trackers or mobile apps that monitor your progress, provide insights, and offer reminders. These tools track your activities and serve as constant reminders of your fitness commitments, helping you stay on track.

Cultivate A Supportive Environment

Surrounding yourself with a supportive environment is crucial for maintaining fitness resolutions. Engage with friends, family, or fitness communities that share similar goals. Having a support system can provide motivation, encouragement, and a sense of accountability.

Integrate Fitness Into Daily Life

Make fitness an integral part of your daily life by finding opportunities for physical activity. This could include walking or cycling to work, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or incorporating short workout sessions during breaks. Integrating fitness into your routine eliminates the need for drastic lifestyle changes.

Nutrition: A Cornerstone Of Fitness

Fitness resolutions are incomplete without addressing nutrition. Fuel your body with balanced meals rich in nutrients that support your fitness goals. Consult with a registered dietitian to create a personalised nutrition plan that complements your exercise routine and promotes overall well-being.

Get Proactive With Your Healthcare

Proactively managing your health is a vital component of any fitness resolution. Schedule regular check-ups with healthcare professionals to monitor key indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and overall health. If you have existing health conditions, work closely with your healthcare team to tailor your fitness routine accordingly. You can also find treatments for issues that hinder your fitness online. All sorts of conditions can keep you on the sofa, from allergies to migraines. The Independent Pharmacy is an online pharmacy that can help you find treatment solutions for a wide range of issues. Visit their website to find out more.

Embrace Rest And Recovery

Recognise the importance of rest and recovery in a well-rounded fitness plan. Adequate sleep, rest days, and recovery practices such as stretching, or yoga contribute to overall physical health. Overtraining can lead to burnout and increase the risk of injuries, so listen to your body and prioritise recovery.

Prioritise Consistency Over Intensity

Consistency trumps intensity when it comes to sustainable fitness habits. Rather than sporadic intense workouts, focus on creating a consistent exercise routine. Regular, moderate-intensity activities are more likely to become ingrained in your lifestyle, leading to long-term success.

As consumers, we often find ourselves entangled in a web of fleeting styles where the pursuit of quantity overshadows the importance of quality. This relentless pursuit leads to overflowing closets, paradoxically leaving us feeling like we have ‘nothing to wear.’ However, a transformative shift in perspective towards valuing the intrinsic worth and longevity of clothing can bring about significant change.

Opting for quality over quantity results in versatile and stylish wardrobes and aligns with sustainability and economic sensibility. This conscious approach promotes thoughtful consumption, reduces waste, and fosters a more symbiotic relationship with our garments. Let’s explore why prioritizing quality over quantity remains paramount for a sustainable and meaningful fashion journey.

Pioneering Sustainable And Ethical Practices

Making the conscious decision to choose quality over quantity translates into supporting sustainable and ethical fashion practices. High-quality garments are crafted using superior materials, reducing the environmental impact associated with frequent replacements.

Furthermore, premium brands often adhere to more ethical production processes, ensuring fair wages and improved working conditions. By being mindful of our fashion choices, we actively contribute to a more sustainable and equitable fashion industry.

Aligning with Your Values Through Brand Selection

While building a wardrobe that champions quality, selecting pieces from brands that resonate with your values and standards is imperative. Opting for designer wear, such as the meticulously crafted trousers offered by The Row, available at SSENSE, exemplifies a step in the right direction.

The Row’s commitment to sophistication and timeless style ensures that each garment is a worthwhile investment. Supporting brands prioritizing craftsmanship, ethical production, and sustainability results in enduring pieces and fosters a more responsible and conscientious fashion industry.

Mindful Wardrobe Curation for Sustainability

Adopting a sustainability-focused mindset in building your wardrobe ensures that each addition is a conscientious choice made with deliberate intention and care. Mindful curation goes beyond merely aligning with personal style; it involves selecting items that resonate with your aesthetic and contribute to a sustainable lifestyle.

This thoughtful selection process emphasizes versatility and wearability, enabling you to assemble a collection of clothing that transcends trends. By choosing garments that can be mixed, matched, and layered effectively, you actively reduce the environmental impact of impulsive purchases, making each addition a valuable and sustainable asset to your curated wardrobe.

Sustainable Expression of Individual Style

Consciously embracing your style through a sustainable lens is at the heart of prioritizing quality over quantity. This goes beyond fleeting trends, focusing on recognizing and celebrating authenticity. Your unique style is brought to life through nuanced choices that reflect your values, personality, and aesthetic preferences.

Understanding and honoring your style lead you to high-quality pieces that align with your identity and contribute to a more sustainable fashion ethos. This heightened self-awareness shields against unnecessary purchases, ensuring that every garment in your wardrobe becomes a purposeful expression of your true self while positively impacting the world of ethical fashion.

The enduring impact of prioritizing quality over quantity in fashion is more than aesthetics. It is a powerful commitment to sustainability, ethical practices, intentional curation, and the celebration of individuality. Making mindful choices means we build timeless wardrobes and contribute to a fashion landscape that values longevity and responsibility.

Am I the only person who finds water a little boring? I blame my addiction to diet soda, which I gave up last Friday but still crave more than I care to admit. The whole point of going pop free is to put the kibosh on cola-chemicals and replace them with glorious, pure H20. So how do I get myself to guzzle the wa-wa while I'm still craving that weird nondescript cola flavor!?
Leisureguy had an excellent suggestion: flavored water! I love this idea, and apparently I'm not the only one. I scoured the internet and found tons of ideas for naturally enhancing the flavor of water with fruit and herbs.
A couple of general tips before I get into the monster list:

Sparkling water can be used instead of still water for that bubbly goodness

Fruit infusions are best if they've been allowed to steep for at least four hours

Freeze any of the following into ice cubes

Use a French Press to filter herbs, spices and other bits you don't want to drink

Now let's get on to the monster list. Got any other ideas? Add them to the comments.

32 Natural Ways to Flavor Water

Citrus fruit - Lemons, lime, oranges, grapefruit. Flavor is just a squeeze away!

Tea - A tea bag works just as well in cold water as it does in hot water. Just steep it for longer. (Thanks, Leisureguy!)

Ginger - Steep slices of ginger in hot water. Pour over ice.

Sliced cucumber - 'nuff said

Mint - Break apart the leaves to release the flavor. Also good with vodka and lime. =)

Unsweetened fruit juice - Leisureguy suggests cranberry or pomegranate juice. Just add a splash or two to a glass of water. Zing!

Fresh pomegranate seeds - Here are step-by-step instructions that explain How to Cut and De-Seed a Pomegranate.

Wine - I must say I love this idea from Wisebread. The recommend plum wine or umeshu: "It is a very sweet Japanese liquere made from green plums so I drink it with a lot of water. The distinct sweet flavor still comes through when there is one part umeshu in ten parts water. I am sure the same can be done with other syrupy liqueres."

Strawberries

Raspberries

Blueberries

Peaches

Pineapple

Sangria water - Mix the following and let steep for four hours: 1 quart filtered water; 4 slices each of lemon, orange and lime; 1 ripe peach, cut into quarters; 1 cup fresh pineapple chunks

Fresh stevia leaves - Stevia is a naturally sweet non-caloric leaf that is usually sold in packets, but it also makes a nice houseplant. Read more about growing Stevia.

Mixed fruit - Orange, lemon, lime, strawberrys, and cucumber go well together

Lemongrass - Let a sprig of lemongrass steep sit in a glass of water for a few hours.

Parsley - Break apart the leaves to release the flavor.

Sliced cucumber and lemons

Ginger and lemon

Strawberries and mint

Citrus fruit ice cubes - The sweet and sour kalamansi orange can be frozen whole and used as ice cubes. You could do the same thing with mandarins, clementines or satsumas.

Salt - An interesting tip from Wisebread: "I am sure you have heard of the term "electrolytes" in the marketing for energy drinks. Actually electrolytes are just ions that can be found in common table salt. Adding a little bit of salt to water helps your body absorb the liquid more quickly. As long as you don't go overboard with the salt the water should be very quenching and it would be great for workouts since the body loses salt through sweat."

Vinegar - Again, from Wisebread: "Adding vinegar to water is similar to adding citrus. You will get sour water that has vitamin C. When I was a kid I liked adding apple vinegar to water and then drinking it."

Hibiscus (Red Zinger) tea. I used to drink buckets of stuff at The Spider House Cafe in Austin, Texas. It's easy to make, just put four bags in a pitcher for a few hours.

Cubed honeydew melon with cucumber

Lavender buds - Put them in a small muslin bag and let it steep for a while.

Angostura bitters - This stuff is often used in martinis and other boozy drinks, but it's also good in ice water. Just add a few dashes. If you're feeling more adventurous, check out the Angostura website for more recipes.

Spiced Ginger and Citrus Infusion - Steep the following over hot water for 5 minutes, then drink it hot or on ice: 1/2 in of peeled ginger, a couple of cloves, a small piece of cinnamon stick, and a couple of slices of citrus fruit. You can add honey if you like as well.

Watermelon juice - Thanks again to Leisureguy for the idea!

Herb Infused Water made with cucumber, lemon, mint and rosemary.

Sun Tea - This is an old favorite of mine that my fam used to make with Lipton tea bags and sliced lemons served over lots of ice. Here is a basic recipe for Sun Tea. You can make it more interesting by adding mint, fresh fruit, lemons, whatever you fancy. It's SO refreshing on a hot summer day.

We all know it’s important to hydrate, but sometimes plain water seems a little bit boring. So I’ve been exploring natural water flavourings using fruit, herbs, and spices. These healthy all natural ingredients can all go a long way towards making water taste better, without any added sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Travel tip: To make it easier to take your naturally flavored water on the go, try carrying it in a reusable water bottle with a custom lanyard or bulk luggage tags. It’s a handy way to keep your bottle close (and harder to lose), especially when you’re out walking, hiking, or running errands. You can even personalize them with designs that reflect your style—practical and a fun accessory.

Although most of the UK has been out of lockdown for a while now, evidence abounds that lockdown fatigue still looms large. The months of enforced quarantine – particularly over the cold dark British winter – took its on the mental and physical health of me and many others. I managed to stave off some of the damage with CrossFit Zoom classes and the allocated daily dog walk (or ‘the joyless trudge’ as Monica Heisey describes in reference to being utterly sick of going for a walk – she has a point). Still, rosé days and afternoon cake became regular habits. And coming out of lockdown hasn’t exactly been an instant transition back to regular life. The return to in-person CrossFit was much welcome for the social aspect, but a rude awakening to my depleted skills. And speaking of socialising, even that’s stressful: after a period of isolation, spending time with other people is hard work! Social hangovers: it’s a real thing.

This Covid-induced rollercoaster has made bouncing back a painfully slow process. I’m not getting everything right (cue the butter, eggs, and sugar on the counter for the polenta cake I plan to make this weekend). But here’s a few things I’m trying to get back to peak Monica!

Get outside

Time to think outside the box of the allotted lockdown daily walk. No doubt spending time outside, be it gardening or hiking up a mountain is great for your physical health, but it’s good for your mental health too. Science has shown it to be so!

“There is mounting evidence, from dozens and dozens of researchers, that nature has benefits for both physical and psychological human wellbeing,” says Lisa Nisbet, PhD, a psychologist at Trent University in Ontario, Canada, who studies connectedness to nature. “You can boost your mood just by walking in nature, even in urban nature. And the sense of connection you have with the natural world seems to contribute to happiness even when you’re not physically immersed in nature.” Nature

Nail a sleep routine

Sleep is magic. I know from personal experience that when I’m sleeping well and at regular hours, a whole bunch of other things happen for me. I feel better, I’m more productive, and generally just more positive about life.

“One in 3 of us suffers from poor sleep, with stress, computers and taking work home often blamed. However, the cost of all those sleepless nights is more than just bad moods and a lack of focus. Regular poor sleep puts you at risk of serious medical conditions, including obesity, heart disease and diabetes – and it shortens your life expectancy. It’s now clear that a solid night’s sleep is essential for a long and healthy life.” NHS

Get real

I do not advocate the use of scales – they’re called a “sad step” for a reason and are not an accurate measurement of the path to good health (for example, I’m 10kg heavier and a helluvalot stronger and healthier since I started CrossFit). However I do find taking some basic body measurements, ideally using a tape measure or skin fold callipers, a motivating benchmark (you can use an online body fat calculator to run the numbers for you. I don’t take these measurements too often – maybe every 2-4 weeks. They’re especially useful when taking on a new fitness routine like a Couch to 5k so you can craft your progress.

Juicing

I’m a long time advocate of juicing and have regarded my occasional 7-day juice feasts as the ultimate reset. I did a couple juice feasts during the last year in response to when things were seeming particularly low. They were both super helpful – the first one even gave me the focus and energy to kick off a new business. Read more about why I juice feast.

Food Plan

My food planning is hit and miss but I know when I DO make the effort, I generally eat healthier, tastier food and feel way better for it. And though I’m not a fan of long-term calorie counting, spending a few days tracking your food can help remind you exactly what you’re putting in your body. If you need help remember exactly how much you should be putting in your body, you can use this simple calorie requirement calculator to find out roughly how much you should be eating for your level of activity.

Group Exercise

I’ve mentioned CrossFit a few times – sorry! (I promise I’m not a CrossFit wanker.) BUT I’m super lucky to have the friendliest ever CrossFit box here in Cirencester to go to. Down to earth people, great teamwork, and an amazing coach. When the rest of the day is crap, if I get to CrossFit, I know I’m doing at least something right.

Plan some trips

Related to social hangovers – I’m finding trip planning so hard at the moment! After being home so long, it’s hard to imagine going away. Fight the temptation to become house bound! I’ve got a trip planned to Scotland next week, and though it was hard to get my head around it at first, now that a few basic things are booked, I’m getting more and more excited for a change of scene. (I’ll be writing more about this on my other website over at Eat Sleep Wild.)

There seems to be a trend at the moment (e.g. Instapot, Ninja Foodie, and the like) for do-it-all kitchen appliances designed to take away the heavy lifting of cooking whilst still producing tasty nutritious meals. As such I was eager to have a try of the new Froothie Evolve High Speed Blender which touts all of the features of a quality high speed blender plus the added functionality of steaming and cooking (particularly soups, sauces, and the like). The Froothie Evolve isn’t exactly an all-in-one cooking system (don’t expect it to slow cook a brisket for you) but its added cooking features make it pretty compelling as an appliance that can save a bit of time without taking up epic amounts of space in the kitchen.

Quick disclaimer: I’m a Froothie affiliate so I may get a small kickback if you purchase an Evolve blender after clicking this link. That said, all of these opinions are my own. I’ve already been really happy with the Froothie Optimum Vac2 Air Vacuum Blender for my general blending needs so hoped that the Evolve’s added cooking functions wouldn’t compromise on the other features. On paper, the specs are favourable as compared to similar products. But how did it stack up?

I won’t do a deep dive on all of the features – you can absorb all of this on the official Froothie Evolve website. Here’s the stuff that really stood out for me:

Froothie Evolve’s Soup Making Function Actually Works!

I’m mentioning this first as it was a key selling point for me and a unique feature as compared to other power blenders. But does it work?! I was mesmerised to discover that it does, and pretty well, too. Not a whole lot of attention is given to this feature on the website or in the manual, and I’m not entirely sure why. In fact the manual makes the whole process a bit mysterious. It says to put everything in a blender, add water, and select “Smooth Soup” or “Chunky Soup” but there are no guidelines on ingredients, quantities, etc. So I had to sort of wing it. I trialled the soup function with my favourite red lentil soup, Shorabat Addas, simply putting all of the ingredients (dry lentils, a quartered onion, 3 cloves of garlic, some spices, water, salt) into the blender, holding my breath, and pressing the start button.

Would it cook my lentils? Would it even be hot? Who can say. I’d have to wait 30 minutes to find out (that’s how long the soup setting takes to run).

During those 30 minutes the house started to fill with the usual aroma of this Persian soup and I could see in the jug the lentils moving around. Things were happening! I chose the “chunky” setting, so through the process the Froothie kicked into blender mode for a few pulses. Finally it was done, and the soup was good!

This is going to be a huge time saver for me. What can I say – I eat a lot of soup, especially during the winter. I fill up my Thermos flask and take it with me to off-site jobs or hiking trips. Having the option to make nutritious soup quickly and easily is an enabler. I’m still experimenting with the soup functions but I can see it becoming my favourite feature of the Froothie Evolve.

A couple points to remember…

The soup setting is 30 minutes long so anything you put in the jug needs to cook in 30 minutes (so red lentils are fine, but longer cooking pulses probably wouldn’t work so well).

Be mindful above with vegetables, too… you’ll want to cut up things like sweet potatoes, squashes, and so on into manageable pieces that will cook in a timely fashion.

The cooking jug size is 1.75L so you might have to scale recipes in order to fit everything in the jug.

A bonus for anyone counting calories or being mindful of fat intake is that this method allows you to make soup without any added oil.

The cooking jug also comes with a steamer basket for steaming vegetables, rice, etc. Another enabler for healthy cooking.

Two Glass Jugs

I’m really glad that Froothie has started shipping its blenders with glass jugs (rather than plastic). This is a huge step up in terms of quality and aesthetics. I’ve found the plastic jugs of previous Froothie blenders to go cloudy over time. The glass should mitigate this. Some might complain about the weight – they are heavy – but to me the heft just adds to the quality feel. I’m pro. The blender comes with two jugs, one for vacuum blending (basically a standard blunder jug perfect for smoothies), the other for cooking (this has a heating element so should only be used for soups, sauces, etc).

Voice Activation and Bluetooth Option

Check this out: you can activate the machine with voice commands and even operate it through an app on your phone. I’m a nerd so of course I found this cool. How often will I use this? Probably not a lot. But I love knowing that it’s there and if I wanted I could make a breakfast smoothie (pre-prepped the night before!) from the comfort of my warm bed!

All of the qualities of a quality power blender

I was worried that the Froothie Evolve’s extra functions would compromise on its core strength as a powerful blender. The Evolve has a Max Blending Motor Power of 1800 Watts. This is more than either the Vitamin or Blentec, so I probably shouldn’t have worried. I’ve tried making both smoothies and nut butter with the Froothie Evolve with great results. No grainy bits. No overheating. And easy to clean with the pre-set cleaning function.

Any downsides to the Froothie Evolve?

Extra storage space required for multiple jugs

You need to be careful when cooking the cleaning jug to ensure you don’t get the bottom heating element wet

It’s a little loud, but then again, it’s a blender!

The jugs are heavy. This doesn’t bother me, but others with mobility issues might find it cumbersome.

My verdict

I really like the Froothie Evolve. More than I anticipated – it is indeed more than just a blender. The Froothie Evolve is a quality piece of kitchen kit that fulfils all of the functionality of a top class power blender with added cooking features that make it a huge enabler. Anyone who wants to engrain healthier habits in their lifestyle will find the smoothie and soup functions enormously helpful. Equally, anyone who just needs a tool for making top quality blended creations, healthy or otherwise, will find this powerful blender very effective.
