New Young Pony Club - Jerk Me: This is an ace punk-funk jam in the spirit of ESG/Bush Tetras/Material, working some wonderfully sleazy guitar licks worthy of a Marc Bolan reference. And although I might think the NYPC is strongly influenced by certain artists from certain eras, they continually surpass those influences to produce very modern songs that are (so far) nothing short of bulletproof.
I wonder if the NYPC will continue to release only 7inch singles, or if they will work towards an album? I kind of hope for the former, preferring the current mysteriously exclusive access to their music through the small vinyl format. But maybe that's just me being selfish...

The Hot Springs - CacoDisco: I first fell in love with song when I found it on a Montreal Pop Sampler earlier this year up at the radio station. It became a staple of my show until the station started getting renovated and I couldn't find that particular pop sampler. Fairly frustrating, but whatever. Recently I was reminded of this song while I was re-logging my old playlists and I decided to check the old WWW for some news on the Hot Springs. They have an album out now and are planning to do lots of shows in the fall. Lucky for you if you live around the Montreal area.

Cut Copy - Radio 1 Mix (45 minutes, mp3): If you've been following this page, or my radio program for the past year and a half you'd know that Cut Copy is probably my favorite thing to play on any occasion. Now they're coming to a North American town near you! This is a mix Cut Copy put together for a bbc radio 1 show while they were touring the UK with Mylo. Chromeo - Needy Girl (Bloc Party remix): If Needy Girl wasn't hot enough, Russell Lissack of the Bloc Party reassembled a nice throwback to New Order's Blue Monday, along with added rythm guitar, synths and a more rock oriented bassline. I kinda wished the guitar riff at the end of the first chorus would have carried on through the song, or a least came back for seconds, but whatever. The big sweeping synths at the end keep things moving and this is certainly a refreshing visit to one of my favorite songs.

Shirokuma - Moonlight In The Afternoon: I don't know what took me (or anyone else for that matter) so long to post this song. Originally released on a 10" back in 2003, this big warm slice of electropop was reissued on a double 10" (weirdest format yet, I think. Still waitin on a split 10" from somebody to take the crown though) earlier this year with remixes by Andy Votel and Max Tundra.
On the back of the record sleeve the song is cleverly spelled out on a pink and white checkerboard. With the japanese woman's alphabet interpolation "A...B...C...D..." spelled out on the Pink squares next to Mark Corrin's corresponding verses on the white squares. You'll notice that for each letter, the verse that follows corresponds alphabetically "A - city Arches in the sun as we hurry past," "E - Eating heat in the pink of a hotel bed," "L- Laserprints on our skin at the waterfall," and this goes on through the whole alphabet. This sleeve is almost as fun to look at as this song is to listen to. Definately one of the most cleverly designed sleeves I have ever seen. Not to mention the quality of the vinyl pressing itself. It sounds really good. In fact, I'm finding that all the vinyl I get on 10" sounds better than anything else. I really should find out where these are all getting pressed. I'd post a picture of this one to illustrate the clever graphic design, but I don't have a digital camera or scanner. I'll try and borrow one later.

Your results are back from the lab.

Duchess Says - In Serial: This might be the best song I have posted yet (yeah I know, nevermind that Cribs thing, good song, but I was crazy to say "best song ever"). With In Serial I'm thinking Manga Studios circa 1985 teaming up with Italo-electro-disco pioneer and sountrack genius Giorgio Moroder to produce an Anime feature obsessed with the juxtaposition of contrast and homogenization, and it would have been called Black Moonbird. There'd be tons of crazy dangerous half-machine villians (with forward facing utillity style haircuts) trying to take over Tokyo and make everyone half-machine so they can work for the Evil Boss to create this giant robot that will move the moon into a position where it always eclipses the sun over Japan. The tide is always high and the sun no longer rises. Just this faint halo hovering to blot out the contrast between day and night, good and evil, life and work, man and machine.

Of course or hero, Ryudo Hawkwind (neurological scientist by day, motorcycle vigilante gang leader by night), will not accept this fate. And of course his girlfriend, Kagero (tired journalist by day, underground synth-rock diva by night), get's wrapped up in the boss' plans. Naturally, Ryudo has to save her and the world with his gang on their totally kitted out street bikes, sporting their fashionably futuristic sideways haircuts.

At the climax of the movie, just when the giant Black Moon robot is blasting off into space, Ryudo will expose the fact that he is a man-machine and he will sacrifice himself by boarding the robot to stop the Evil Boss' planned blackening of the sun. and just as the giant robot is pushing the moon into position slowly in front of the sun (Duchess Says' In Serial is expertly chosen to score the scene: Kagero crying safely on earth, the war is fighting fiercly in the streets. We see the sunlight dimming over the trees, faces going dark highlighting the terrified watering whites of their eyes, the melancholic synth solo of In Serial [@ the 2:53 mark] driving the point home), the robot explodes into a giant silent fireball, killing Ryudo while making obvious references to the Phoenix as the moon glides safely over the sun to resume it's natural orbit.

Lo-Fi-Fnk - Wake Up: These two swedish kids started their band in high school back in 2001. I was a big fan of last years Unighted single. Now this track is the b-side of their Change Channel 7-inch put out on moshi moshi records, which was incidentally released in England on June 6th, the Swedish National Day. Look out for their upcoming full length, and as well as one track on Kitsune's next upcoming compilation.

Annie - Me Plus One: Finally out in North America care of Vice Recordings. I hope vice issues the same wonderful gatefold sleeve double vinyl that came out on 679 back in january.

Hard-Fi - Better Dub Better: What constitutes "limited edition?" This bright yellow 7-inch is apparently a limited edition, of which I have number 2687. Seriously. So there's at least 3000 of these little yellow records? Sounds exclusive...
Anyway I am a sucker for dubs, and b-sides, especially dub rock on b-sides of limited edition yellow 7's! (am I the little brother of Art Brut?) This track is the Gran Tourismo dub remix of "Better do Better" which is the b-side of the Hard to Beat single, which will be on their recent full length "Stars of CCTV." NIce cover art for this single, "I love you Tina".

Sexual Harassment - If I Gave You A Party: Originally released on Heat records back in 1983, Gomma Records (Munk, Who Made Who, Leeroy Hanghofer, headman, rammelzee...etc) reissued this track on their 2001 Anti-NY compilation. Brilliant track, thanks to Neil Frost at Beatstreet Records for pointing this one out to me, cause I think I am so rad and wouldn't listen to anything that was released more than a year ago. I am working this out.

Fox n'Wolf - Youth Alcoholic: This song totally kills it. I swear these two swedes are going to be the best band to see live. They have apparently recently finished recording their full length and are looking to put it out later this year. Watch out for it!

Manhead - Birth, School, Work, Death: This is an older Manhead track, but his full length album was recently released this past April, and this one happens to be my favorite one. The album seems more like a compilation of dance singles, good dance singles mind you, but not a cohesive album in my opinion. This song is also redone instrumentally as "dancer" which is the b-side of the 12" this is off. But I like this track for the hopeless lyrics by Christian Kreuz.

VHS or BETA - Night on Fire (cut copy remix): I like the Robert Smith vocal cribbin. It's nice. I also like the way Cut Copy has remixed this track. The heavy electro-funk bassline and the dub style echo on the guitars. This came out as a 12" on Kitsune and also features remixes by Interpol's Carlos D, and Tommy Sunshine.

This song sounds like it's speeding up when you leave the room. I was letting my record run till the end and I went downstairs for more coffee and I thought my turntable was speeding up on it's own. I almost stopped it and had to redo the whole mix. But what does that have to do with Dieter Schmidt?

Fellini - Rock Europeu: The first time I heard this song, at the end of the first sixteen bars I was expecting Ian Curtis to start complaining about how empty somethingorother was, but no, he doesn't. Instead I was pleasantly surprised to hear a brazillian guy singinging in Portuguese about (what sounds like) chicks and partying. I guess Fellini could be bitching about post-industrial lonliness, but I can't understand Portuguese so I'm gonna call chicks and partying on this one.
This track came off a 7" split with As Mercenaries, and will be coming out on a full length compilation of classic Brazillian post-punk called The Sexual Life of The Savages, on Soul Jazz Records. I am looking forward to it.

Gang of Four - Damaged Goods: I went to the Gang of Four concert here in Vancouver on Saturday night expecting an okay show. I knew they'd be the Gang of Four, and they'd be playing some Gang of Four songs, and that would be cool. I didn't think they were going to be awesome or anything, just an adequate account of musical history I missed the first time around cause I was only just born the year Entertainment came out. And instead of my parents taking me to see angry post-punk shows I went to Raffi while these guys were originally touring, fair enough though - children don't really get swaggering Brittish lads decrying consumerism. Anyway, like I was saying, I wasn't expecting a whole lot from this lot. But seriously, the Gang of Four were incredible. Jon King had the most British moves I'd ever seen and Andy Gill was all deadpan till he randomly smashed his guitar during some slow song about love. This song, Damaged Goods was originally released as a single in 1978, and then on their debut LP Entertainment! in 1979. And this was what they played for the first encore, finishing the show with I Found That Essence Rare. There are some dates left on the tour, go see them.

Pink Grease - Peaches: So there are these two guys named Norman and Tony. On the surface they pretend not to get along, but they live together so this is merely a facade to entertain guests. Every Friday night Tony's twenty-year-old friends come over to their house, get drunk on the couch and ask Tony when they're going, where they're going, and if he's called a cab yet. Norman ends up joining them cause he doesn't really have a choice- he could go upstairs to noodle around with his guitar, read and go to sleep, but hell this is Friday night in the city! There's girls downstairs and god dammit people are partying in his house. Although Norman knows that these kids are completely disorganized and lack leadership he will join them, and against his better judgement get trapped in his own living room on a Friday night. Around 1:00AM Tony will call two cabs to take everyone out and they will ask "where?" The cabs get tired of waiting so they just leave empty. The kids drinking on the couch eventually become the kids sleeping on the floor. I come home from work at 4:00AM, wake them up briefly and go to bed.
The whole night has been wasted because of a lack of direction and Norman is finally over it. From now on at 10:30PM when all the kids on the couch start asking where they're going and when they're leaving Norman will put this song on, rock out for three minutes and just leave straight-up. This is what will happen every Friday night for the rest of the summer.

The Cribs - You're Gonna Lose Us: After Norman leaves properly, Tony will put this song on with the hope it will inspire the kids on the couch to follow Norman, because although Tony doesn't know it yet, this is his anthem. This song kinda reminds me of old school 2-tone era Specials. Not in the way that it sounds like a ska song, because it doesn't, but in the way it sits next to Friday night, Saturday morning in lyrical quality and content. Both songs are proper self aware abstracts on drinking in England that seem to question the direction of youth, but aren't afraid to be a part of it. Well maybe, I've never been to England, so I apologize if I am out of control here.

With the fantastic plethora of wonderful mp3 blogs posting an unending supply of good new music I don't even know what to post anymore. It's all been done. Like am I going to post the alan braxe remix of heartbeat? I think I'll let the club dj's play that for you first. The Buzzcocks? When in Rome? Weird long electro tracks by Lindstrom? I can't think of anything to post today that would make any sense. So I'll round-up all my latest favorite posts by other bloggers.

The New Black has posted an amazing cover by Vitaminsforyou, of the Arcade Fire's "No Cars Go." I think the new black review is just about right.

The Swish Blog has posted an infectious example of unfinished indie scales called Another Number by The Cribs. The Theme from Chalets is pretty good as well.

Uncritical, always one of my favorites, has posted two great songs in his Wednesday, March 30th post. The Moneybrother song (they're building walls around us) is incredibly poppy and catchy and reminiscent of "crappy late eighties tv shows" (what's wrong with that?). The Boogers track is totally different and totally fun. Thanks for all the great posts Chris!

the SpoiltVictorianChild is consistently posting good fresh music, another regular favorite of mine for sure. About a month ago he posted The New Sound by The Capricorns in this post. I still really can't get enough of these "dracula synths." There's also a post for swedish synth pop girl Compute.

I promise to have something real juicy for all y'all by next wednesday. These sites ought to keep you busy for now though.

Ultrapost: Ragazzi, MIA, You Say party! We say Die!, the Five O'clock Heroes...

Ragazzi - Weekend: I was introduced to this band thanks to Chris at Uncritical when he posted "Ends" last summer. This song is new-wave synth pop at it's best, played by five guys who resemble Gary Numan. Weekend has priceless post-industrial lyrics coupled with a heart-wrenchingly-refrained-from-fist-pumping melody. In fact the whole album, Friday, seems steeped in dreamy post-industrial frustration and melodic refrain/sustain.. Like the song Ends (click to download), where the chorus succinctly deconstructs working class: "you sleep and wake up, you have your hair cut, you go out voting, yeah that's working, the home I live in, the wife and children, these are the things that can make me feel in love!" over the most intense synthesizer workout you're likely to hear in your life. The album also saw some superstar guests, Erland Oye literally phoned in his parts on The Partner and japanese musician/ex-geisha/photographer/vogue columnist Hanayo appears on Call and reply. The composition of this album was also aided with unbelievable production from Mario Thaler (producer for the Notwist and Lali Puna).

You Say Party! We say Die! - Apocolypse Meow: Nothing beats a post-apocolyptic joycore love song done by an artsy bike gang (I assume they ride bikes) from Abbotsford BC. Nothing except maybe one that's longer than a minute forty-nine seconds. The sincere naievety of the lyrics remind me of the nineties, but in a good way. This song's like Kathleen Hanna doing a cover of a Portishead impersonation. Maybe that's why I like this song so much, that and the rickety synth rythm easily finds a place in my heart.

The Five O'clock Heroes - Head games: Title track from the debut LP of the Five O'Clock Heroes. Reminds me of The Jam, but not too much, not directly. Just enough that I'd play this song next to "In the City" in a DJ set or something. I saw them play in the basement of the Lit in New York about a year and a half ago and it was one of the 3 best shows I saw in 9 days, and I took in at least 20 bands. Yeah, the Five O'clock Heroes are awesome and I think they're touring the UK right now. In fact they are, Here's the dates:

M.I.A. has made it, Eugene Mirman gives a stellar performance, having me convinced he was MIA in this "experimental" comedy piece. It's obvious that's how MIA would behave when confronted by Ex-Onion intern, Aziz Ansari (they have a lot in common) outside the knitting factory. Seriously, this is funny.

Bang Bang - Shoot the Model (teen remix): 11 months ago I heard Alan Braxe and Fred Falke's song Rubicon and I declared! it would be the number one summer jam of 2004. I live in Vancouver so Rubicon never really blew up the spot, unless the spot happened to be my living room. I know rubicon took off in other cities, and for all the right reasons - Campy disco beat and an awesome solo played on a cheap guitar. This version of Shoot the Model has all the elements for being the number one summer jam of 2005 (except it was released as a single 12 months ago in Europe, but whatever North America's supposed to be late). We have the standard new rock/house beat, real bass, and a hotter-than-sunburn guitar riff for a chorus. This guitar is the most amazing thing I have heard all year. Much like the Alan Braxe and Fred Falke track in question earlier, the chorus guitar sounds like one of those starter kit electric guitars with the speaker built into the body, like the one in Bart Simpson's closet. And somehow this cheap-ass guitar tone makes me want to strike the most intense hi-top crushing air-guitar pose and rock an extreme overbite. How can French people get away with this?

This isn't some rocking floor filler like you should expect from their live performance, but it's more of a Roxy Music influenced post party jam. That said, Autobahn Music Box was immediately my favorite song from their debut full length Bright Like Neon Love.

Cut Copy - Bright Neon Payphone: Another one from the end of the album. I can't pin down who Dan Whitfords vocals on this track remind me of. I wish I could because then I could have something relevant and witty to say...nope.

Hot Chip - No More Master: Hot Chip's debut album "Coming On Strong" was really fantastic. It blew me away to be honest. It was this campy/sincere bedroom electrofunk album unsure of it's place in the world, and you know Alexis Taylor sang all those lyrics in front of a full length mirror. Now we have the new Hot Chip and it's shit hot. The boys have grown up some, stepped away from the mirror assuming control of the listener and given us an intelligently ridiculous and wonderful song. I wonder if this is an indication of their next full length.

Fannypack - You Gotta Know: Here's the thing. About a year ago this guy gave me Grandia for the playstation one and told me I had to finish it. It is hands down the most annoying video game ever created. Non stop repetition of you killing birds, snakes and scorpions in the desert for 100 hours just so you can get strong enough to beat this lame boss. It's insane. I brought my playstation out of the closet to finish this game, lost two weeks of my life, put the playsyation back in the box and refiled it back in the closet. Now about a month or so ago I bought an RPG for my computer called Neverwinter Nights because I thought it would keep me inside, installed it and played it for a couple of days, went out and got drunk then forgot about it. I'm not really into video games, though sometimes I think I can be. This week my internet went down cause the modem broke or something so I couldn't post to this page or do any web related work. I decide to play Neverwinter Nights and it ruins my whole week. I lost my identity in the real world and had a hard time going outside. I listened to this record over and over without even realizing it while I battled this stupid video game and anytime I peeled myself away from it, this "you've got to know" hook was in my head. Yesterday night the internet works again so I put on this Kitsune X record minus the RPG thank god, and beheld the magic that is fannypack.

The T.A.L.A. Band Disband

T.A.L.A. Band - mystery track: So another Vancouver band (see Fuck Me USA)records an EP and breaks up before it sees the light of day. I wonder why this happens. I wonder why it only happens to my favorite bands in the city. Do I have a taste for tension? No, I just like post-punk/art-dance-rock/new-wave bands- you know how it is. With the T.A.L.A. Band we have the post punk/funk rythms, post punk guitar, and vocals like Mark E. Smith covering Ian Curtis doing an exaggerated impersonation of Robert Smith, but still original- sounding nothing like the above mentioned artists. It was all so perfect in 2004, complete with promises of seven minute sets at artsy fartsy skate shops. These kids were getting my vote as the best band in Vancouver. Then a week ago I got this CD with news the members of the T.A.L.A. Band had moved on to other projects. Let's hope they can start 4 bands as awesome as this.

No way man, Paul McCartney just doesn't DO italo-electro disco.

Paul McCartney - Temporary Secretary: Well actually, Paul McCartney does do italo electro. This is actually an official Paul McCartney release, released by Parlophone first in 1980 as a twelve inch b/w Secret Friend limited to 25,000 pressings, and again by Parlophone in 2003 as the Radio Slave edit, a single sided twelve inch limited to 500 copies worldwide. Now I recorded this version off the single sided 2003 release, but it's pretty much the same as the original track. From what I can gather, the Radio Slave edit has some extra hi-hat accents, some reverse snares, the arpeggiated synth intro has been extended, as has the entire track, by about 2 minutes. But that's it. Paul McCartney was actually behind this song and he actually released it in 1980. Many thanks to DJ Beef who played this song on his radio show a couple of weeks ago. That's where I heard it for the first time.

Charlie - Spacer Woman: Now if you are wondering just what Italo-Electro Disco is, this is one of the finest examples. I can't believe people were dancing to this in 1982, cause it's really fantastic electro with really fantastic lyrics: "I'm a spacer woman, don't you want to love me/ I don't want to hurt you, I just want to love you." This song was recorded off the vinyl version of I Robots compilation of early italo electro disco.

Ego Wrappin - Track Scorcher: This song is so much fun I can't even believe it. It's like they are at the international departures gate and they are going somewhere fresh. And since it's in Japanese, Ego Wrappin could be singing about dead birds for all I know, but I doubt it cause dead birds aren't this much fun. By the way, the track gets scorched at the 1:20 mark by an amazing wall of reverbed guitars.

Yukari Rotten - Break: I was so worried I would never get this record by the way Picadilly Records was talking about it, but I totally fluked out and found it on Jet Set Records. Now I have it and so do you. Yukari Rotten is Yukari Fresh, although I don't know what the distinction is between the two monikers. This song is the first single off her newest album called Me, this 12" also features remixes by Headman and Chicks On Speed.
