Writing a special note on describing your purpose of your blog site, achievements and statistical data on homepage can give a very good impression about the site.

Don’ts

Site moderator should avoid heavy design templates and flash animations which requires excessive bandwidth. It is wise not to confuse your visitor by putting hotchpotch design templates. Dark colors which make it difficult to read should be avoided too.

Socialize Your Blog

Socializing is not new to bloggers but associating your blog with social media website is not practiced as yet. It is recommended to post a link of your blog site on different social media websites e-g Facebook, Twitter, Orkut etc. There is an option on Twitter which allows different users to follow your updates. It is very efficient way to divert some traffic from big sites to your blog without much hassle.

RSS Feeds

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) Feeds is unique tool to keep visitors loyal and up to date with your blog. Every time you upload something on your blog site RSS allows the subscribers to get update on their email or mobile. This method is helpful in retaining and maintaining the traffic on your website.

It is important to make it very easy for visitors to contact you. Make your About page very clean and easy to read. Put some real human names on the website, and even consider adding a photo, so that people know who they’re addressing. Similarly, make it easy for readers to comment on your posts.

Easy Navigation

Most of blog owners do not pay attention to importance of navigating on their blog. They do not tend to transform the unwanted clutter into useful links. The main navigation tabs are sometimes difficult to find because just to make it fancy they make the sliding menu. It does not work all the time. It has also been seen that there are undesired tabs which just make the reader confusing.

Working Links

Most of people do not really take care of their blog site which should not be the case. It is a proper business but people just upload any template and do not remove the junk out of it. It leaves many broken links on the site which gives very negative impression about the owner. So it is highly advisable to remove unwanted links or at least post only those links which are not broken.

Running a blog is unique and new way of earning money. Whether you are a freelance graphic designer or own a cutting-edge advertising agency or design house, there is a cut-throat competition being face in the field of graphic designing. Learning how to pitch your services to potential clients (also known as prospects) is a skill one must master in order to generate more business and become successful.

A perfect sales pitch is almost a myth, as it depends on a number of probabilities and uncertainties. A perfect sales pitch has a simple formula i.e. ‘knowing how to talk about your services’, however; it is often easier said than done. Pitching a design client can be more complicated than pitching any other client. It must be well thought out before hand and executed properly while engaged. So n this post I will try to mark out some practices and techniques that can help you better prepare yourself and deliver the knowledge about your services. For those who might already have most of these points at the back of their minds, this post may turn out to be a refresher course and turn your pitch into a direct call-to-action.

Pick the Right Potential Client

Not every company that involves graphic designing is your potential client. Being selective about the clients you pursue saves your time, resources and money. Being wise about knowing who your ideal client is, improves your new-business success. Given the expenses involved in the business-development process can be (manpower, money and resources) you should become highly selective on who to serve and who not. Ask yourself questions like: Does it suit our range of services? Will it be a challenge client? Will it be interesting for me or my employees? Are the client’s values and culture compatible with ours… If the answers of these questions go positive, then you should proceed with the pitching process, otherwise, forget it!

An Email Interaction to Start With

Once you have decided which potential client you want to pitch, stat with an email interaction. Making cold-calls or visiting their office all out of the blue is not the way to go. Send a soft introductory email telling them about what you do and what you want to do with their company. Check if they have already been using the services of graphic designer/ company. You will be in a much better position if they already have a design company working for them.

Catch an Insider

Nowadays, most email services have developed an active spam system. And here is where the introductory email tip fails. To counter this, try to find an acquaintance from within the company you are pitching. Knowing an insider has multiple benefits during the pitching process and even after you have nailed the client. The insider can give you valuable information about the company, the decision-makers, company’s requirements and its tendency towards a new pitch. However do keep in mind that the insider should be authentic and reliable.

Research Well Beforehand

Know the client and the project you are pitching before you end up in their boardroom. Your inside acquaintance can help you at this step. Otherwise, the company’s website, brochures, flyers and even the business cards can help you gain information regarding the taste and aesthetics of the potential company. Try to yield the information like, yield the following information: what the client is looking for, the attributes the potential company is proud at, the criteria for selecting a design firm, the budget, any existing research that can be used in the project, the meeting participants and the major decision-makers, the other competing firms and the client’s reasons for ending any current relationships with creative firms.

If you are targeting a specific market or industry, try to surround yourself with their market as much as possible. Look into the latest trends of that industry and research your prospect’s competitor as well. This will help in differentiating your services from your competitors and will provide reasoning for them to choose you over the next guys.

Connect with the Client

You have thought through your presentation and crafted a perfect message in your ads, brochures, flyers, post cards and other communications on your unique approach towards your prospect. However, your objective should be connecting with the prospective client on a personal level. Try to forge a bond with clients. There are many forms of creating this bondage i.e. build personal trust, differentiate yourself and communicate your strengths, style and business methods in a way they can relate to.

Listen

If you are well-prepared and know a lot about your prospective client, it is not necessary that you have to show it off to them as well. You would not want to get into habit of saying the same stuff over and over again, just because you prepared it that way. It is important to note that when you talk to your prospective client, be interactive. Talk well and hear your prospects out by listening closely to what they are saying. The longer you are engaged in this interactive presentation, the better chance you have of them remembering you.

Focus on their goals

Try to get into your prospect’s mind and capture their interest to tap it for your own success. Focus on the outcome and match them with what services you can provide to achieve them the best. Show them that your designs and graphical approach can take their company in a different direction which is much better than where it is going now.

Show a Bigger Picture

Your experience in the field of graphic designing can be one of your most powerful weapons in a new-business pitch. Show the prospective clients that you have relevant and meaningful experience with similar projects or companies and that you have a process in place to tackle such projects in future as well. Presenting a bigger picture of your work is the key strategy. Show the kind of your work that has been a vital part of something bigger related to your clients in the past and assure your prospects that you can do the same for them as well.

Sell Your Services

Most companies understand what a graphic designing service is, but few understand why and how they are so important. Explain to your clients about the range of services you can provide to them and how your designs can help them make a mark in the market. Even a simple call-to-action design campaign is enough to increase the bottom line for a lot of local companies. Someone who is not from the design industry might not know this. It is you who should communicate to them that how beneficial you can be for their business.

Don’t Be Afraid to Fail

Even after all the research, hardwork and preparation, there is a possibility that you might get a ‘No’  as a reply from the client. However, you should not at all lose heart on it. Remember that there may be a number of reasons behind the refusal and many of them may not be your fault. When you get turned down for a major project, it’s not a jab at your skills or your business. With every failure comes the chance for you to do two things: pack up and leave, or concentrate and improve your efforts. If you ask me, the better way is to focus on using failed pitches as a chance to refine and optimize your sales message.

For a graphic designer or a graphic design companies, getting involved in the pitching process is almost inevitable. So when you know that you cannot avoid a certain thing, you should do it will all your heart. Same goes for new sales pitching for graphic designers. Creative minds sometimes undergo dry spells, which affects their working ability in general and creativity in particular in a very negative manner. However, the trouble actually begins if they’re not aware of what’s happening to them and let the situation take them over.

A burnout can happen to anyone, whoever is involved in creative thinking process at any platform at any time of age. However, this post specifically addresses to the burnout that hits a freelance graphic designer’s mind. We will discuss this problem in detail in the following.

What Causes A Burnout

When looking into a certain issue, one should start off with its root cause. Burnout of a freelance graphic designer may have many causes. In many cases, burnout stems from the work itself i.e. being over-worked, work being undervalued or having a responsibility greater than one’s capacity. Other factors contribute to burnout of a graphic designer can range from your lifestyle to certain personality traits, like being unsatisfied from your work and even being socially hostile or not getting enough sleep. Whatever the reason of your burnout may be, it is important to avoid it in the first place in order to have a more fulfilling work life.

Burnout Indicators

Like sneezing is the most obvious symptom of Influenza, in case of creative burnout, stress is considered as the very first indicator. Burnout doesn’t happen without stress. Stress may come from too many meetings, work imbalance, social hostility, projects, responsibilities, unrealistic deadlines, improperly set expectations, distractions etc. In order to analyze if you are going under stressful condition or not note if you have the following feelings:

• Every project turns out bad

• Losing interest in your job or the work you’re doing

• You feel unappreciated or do not feel like you’re making a difference in your job

• Disconnect between your personal values and what is expected of you

• Self-defined goals or those imposed on you are unrealistic or unreasonable

• Significant amount of incomplete projects

Ways to Avoid A Burnout

As a freelance graphic designer, a burnout can strike you anytime. The main reason may be the free-wheeling involved in this kind of work pattern. However, like every other physical and psychological disorder, creative burnout, if left uncured, can lead you to a permanent inability to do creative tasks.

Although I am not a psychologist or something, but being able to successfully take over such kind of burnout once in my life, I am mentioning some tips that can help my freelance designer fellows to avoid the burnout situation in the first place and to maintain an efficient, rewarding and creative work process.

Set up Balanced Work Hours

As I have mentioned earlier, one of the most crucial causes of creative burnout for the freelancers is the imbalance in working schedule. In avoiding burnout, the first thing is to have some sort of a set schedule that involves only working a reasonable number of hours each week. Most freelancers do try to set a solid timetable for work, however, there are few amongst us, especially the newcomers do not care for the time they spend on their work. For such people working longer hours is a symbol of hard-work and dedication. However, this should not be the case. There are times when upcoming deadlines may force you to work longer hours, but that should be your routine. You can work flexible hours that change from one week to another, but the important part is that you set a schedule for yourself that will help you avoid working hectic long hours on a regular basis.

Say No to Sharp Deadlines

Deadlines are not bad in themselves, infact for freelancers, deadlines provide them a specific time-frame to finish their task and start working on another projects. However, what is bad is an unrealistic deadline and a limited time to finish your task in. While you cannot eliminate deadlines altogether, you should only accept deadlines that are reasonable and realistic. If a client wants to give you a project but with an unrealistic deadline, do not accept the job (even if you don’t have any). Instead, take the time to explain to them why it is not realistic and how it can hurt the quality of your work. Also suggest a reasonable time line that will allow you to get everything done without working around the clock.

Charge Equal to the Time Spent

Evaluate the rates that you are charging, once every 6 months, to make sure that you are not under-charging your services. Many freelancers charge less than they are worth or the time they spend on the project. If you set a value for your services lower than the time and hard work you put in your tasks, you will ultimately fall a prey to creative burnout and at some point in time your ability to think creatively will die off. If you are able to increase your rates and still retain the same interest level from clients, you can reduce the number of work hours and will automatically have enough time for other things too.

Accept Projects that Match Your Interest

This is a universal fact of the world of creativity that one can only give his best to his work if it is done with greater interest. So always try to consider the type of projects that match up with your own interests. Every designer has something that they are passionate about. So try to finding work that interests your passion and keeps you fallen in love with your project. Although it is quite inevitable that you come across different kinds of projects, some of which may not interest you very much, but you can at least try to find the job that you feel comfortable with. Your interest can be related to doing work for a particular type of organization, working within a specific industry, or specializing in a particular type of design or development.

Set Priorities

Setting priorities can be synonymous to getting organized. Prioritizing your daily work is really just as vital as setting working hours. To-do list is the best tool you can make use of to prioritize your daily tasks each day that shows you exactly what you need to be working on and what is most important. If you don’t set priorities to your daily, weekly or monthly tasks, you’ll end up in an emergency situation in order to meet a project deadline and a hurried situation absolutely kills creativity. So, make it a habit to knowing exactly what you should be working on and what you need to get accomplished.

Outsource Services of Other Designers

If you feel like you don’t have enough time for a certain project deadline, consider outsourcing the services of other freelancers. There are plenty of opportunities for designers to outsource. However, it needs to be done carefully since their work puts your reputation is at stakes. Outsourcing can help to speed up your development time and leave you with more time to do other things, or just less time for work.

Give Yourself a Break!

Last, but not the least, free time or vacation is very important to keep a freelance designer’s mind away from burnout situation. Time away from work is necessary in order to re-charge and refresh your capabilities. Freelancers often deprive themselves of adequate free time because they don’t want to miss out on potential work. One thing they should understand is to create a balance in work and taking vacations is important. A proper planning and preparation a vacation does not have to hurt your business.

Be Passionate About Your Work

This is a universal law, that in order to be successful in anything you do, you’ll have to be passionate about it. Especially in freelance designing business, where you don’t have a boss to motivate you, your passion for your work should be the source of your motivation. If you are an employee of some company, it’s easy to do your 9 to 5 job and then leave it behind for the next day.

Well, in freelancing, this should not be the attitude. To be a successful freelancer, you need to have an excitement for what you do. Passion will be that driving force that’ll keep you working till late night. Equally passion will keep you focused and it is quite possible that this same thing that will guarantee your success.

Keep Learning New Things

Graphic designing is a multi-disciplinary skill that is as broad as it is deep. Every new day brings in new ideas or techniques and often it is hard to keep pace. So, it is good to be endlessly inquisitive and always wanting to keep learning the latest trends and technologies. Flush the web, reading every single piece of information about the newbies of the field. A freelance graphic designer should love what he does and constantly learn how to do it even better.

Make a Perfect Portfolio

As a freelancer, it is neither your face nor your resume that will tap the interest of your clients. It is basically, a portfolio that will speak for your talents and skills in the field. The decision-making of your clients depends highly on your portfolio. However, when I talk about a portfolio, I am certainly not referring to the point that just any portfolio can do the magic spell on your client.

Your portfolio needs to be a perfect one. Also, in this regard, put your best foot forward by filtering out your best-of-the-best work and then putting it in the portfolio. If you have been doing 360 degree campaigns, case studies may be the better way to go. A good case study will allow you to explain your involvement with the project, justify the decisions you made and demonstrate how you contributed to the success of the project. People are very visual, so portfolios are a much easier prospect for designers to nail a project.

Network Your Way to Success

Networking is perhaps the easiest way to catch the business as a freelance graphic designer. ‘Charity begins at home’ and so when you start out your freelance business let all of your friends and family know what you are doing. Ask if they know anybody who needs your services and whether they would be kind enough to introduce you.

Events like the local chamber of commerce are a great way to meet potential customers or gain those all important referrals. Also consider contracting directly with a design house or advertising agency. Such organizations are always on the lookout for reliable freelancers, often at a very short notice. These agencies do the hard work of finding and managing clients, leaving you to get on and do what you’re best at.

Networking is an interesting thing to do for a freelancer, which usually involves hanging out with people in your industry, sharing your stories and occasionally getting some work out of it.

Manage Your Time

As a freelancer, you don’t have any direct authority over your head to continuously push you to do meet the deadlines in time. So you need to make sure you manage your time well and meet the project deadlines efficiently. Your time management should be balanced means you should neither do over-time 365 days a year nor sit idle most of the time.

Also, make sure people know the difference between your work time and your personal time. Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you are available 24/7 for your client. One benefit of being a freelancer is being your own boss, so make use of this liberty and be both strict and fair with your time.

Be Well Organized

Like any other business, you really have to be organized in freelance graphic designing as well. This starts from the way you organize your files on your computer, all the way you store printed materials. Losing a client’s important documents or work is just not acceptable. The last thing you want to have is a bad name and the best way to avoid it is to be organized in everything you do.

Maintain Good Reputation

One of the best ways of becoming a successful freelancer is to become the person people want to do business with. This means that you need to build and then maintain a good reputation as a person and as a professional among your clients and in your industry. If you are successful in building a solid reputation, the clients will come to you, instead of you going after them.

You can do this by doing great work and meeting the deadlines efficiently. Another way of build your reputation is by sharing your experiences and knowledge through writing articles, blogging and speaking at local events. By building your reputation as an expert, people will be happy using your services and recommending you to others.

Defend, but don’t  Go Defensive

Always be fully prepared to defend yourself and your design in front of the client; however, do so without being defensive. Actually, whenever you present your design to the client, chances are that you will get some feedback you do not agree with (frankly, sometimes it could really damage the integrity of the design). Your selling talent here will be not let your clients do or say something bad to your work in a peaceful manner. Of course, I am not telling you to roll over on major design decisions, but do take care without getting defensive. Do not let your ego get in the way of your success. When it comes to the smaller stuff, go ahead and let the client win and fight those only worth fighting. A defensive attitude will clearly result in damaging your credibility and the designs as well.

Sell Your Designs Well

To succeed in freelance graphic design, you will have to market and sell yourself, your reputation and your designs to the client. This can be done by a number of ways including word of mouth, advertising in the newspaper, news groups, forums, and by the help of the clients who are happy with your work. The best way to get started is by doing work for people that you know and the ones who know you. This way, you will be able to gauge your potential for less known clients and ultimately will be able to sell well.

Similarly, at a business meeting where everyone is handing out their personal cards, the client is usually left with a stack of business cards at the end of the day. So it is important to make your card catchy and ideal. Also, a card that stands out from the rest makes the business competition healthy.

Legibility

Legibility means that your business card should be easy to read. Basically, a business card is small by nature so printing large fonts is virtually impossible. That means that the type of font you use should be easy to be read in a small size.

Your business card should be neat and unique as well as every alphabetical letter needs to be clear and easy to read. Also remember that too many details complicate the understanding of your message, so try something which should be subliminal.

Quality

Quality matters the most when it comes to business promotion. The material of your card should be of high quality. It may happen that your potential customers will doubt your ability to provide them with high-quality goods if they see your contact information printed on cheap, low-quality material. The sensation of the card should be unique.

When touching your card, prospects will associate any unusual concrete feel with you. For instance, you may use velvet for gentler information or rough surface or even sharp ends for business association.

Elements of an Ideal Business Card

Following are some important and unavoidable elements of a business card which an ideal one should contain:

Name

Your name is very important to be written on your business card. It lends a touch of personalization to your card. In all large and small organization it is important for the recipient of the card to have the name of a specific contact person. The name of the individual is usually the most outstanding text element of a business card.

Business  Name

Like mentioned earlier, an ideal business card should always have your business or organization’s name on it. This is yet another prominent text element of an ideal business card that should standout. An organization with a highly recognizable logo might de-emphasize the business name; however, it should be treated as an essential piece of information.

Job Title

this is not a very important element of the business card, however, it looks professional to mention your position in the company. For instance, some entrepreneurs or sole proprietors might include “President” or “CEO” etc. to give the appearance of a larger organization.

Address

Physical address or a mailing address or both are typical parts of a business card. However, in case the company’s business is exclusively online, a physical address might not be important to include.

Phone Number

Phone number or contact number is also very important to be mentioned in your business card. Usually multiple numbers are listed in order of voice, fax, cell. However, you can omit any numbers that are not the preferred. Don’t forget the area and/or country codes and extension, if required.

Email Address

Like all other addresses, including an email address is an important element for a businesses card. As nowadays, companies are becoming more and more IT savvy and an email address is very important.

Website Address

Almost every company has a website. So website addresses can be listed too. However, do keep in mind that it should be without the http:// preceding the URL.

Logo

After all the written elements, a logo is perhaps the most important visual element of a business card. It is important for instant recognition of the company. It is used consistently on business cards and other print / electronic materials and help to establish a company’s identity.

Color

Colors are a great way to express certain feelings or identity. So, it is in your best interests to study different messages that each color sends (color psychology) and incorporate the most suitable one in your business card, which will be instrumental in creating beautiful business cards with the proper message.

You can also experiment with colors and always check with others before settling on a design – a set of fresh eyes can always cast an objective light on your business card designs. However, most companies use their corporate color in their business card in order to keep consistency in all communication material of that organization.

Business Card Material

Apart from common business cards made of paper or card material, there are also special business cards made from many other interesting materials.

These materials may include plastic (PVC), especially frosted translucent plastic, crystal clear plastic, white or metallic plastic. Other extraordinary materials are metal, rubberized cards, rubber, magnets, poker chips, thin wood and even real wood.

For the most part these special material business cards are of standard format, preferably with rounded corners. These new materials are popular among companies that wish a unique and eye-catching look and will leave a long-lasting impact on the receiver of your business card.
