It's still winter around here. Feeling a bit chilly, I thought I would take sometime to acknowledge the coolness of the winter. Focus on the purity of the white around us. Here are some inspirational images from various sources.

Winter white

Sleek, simple, slippery, cool

wet, wisful, mixed with blue

Hard, soft, catches my fall

I've been thinking alot lately about contrasts, how they exist all around us in various forms. It is the contrast that allows you to recognize the difference in things. Without the "other" you would not recognize the uniqueness of what you are seeing. I have been focusing on light and dark recently. Light illuminates the darkness, Darkness covers the light. There is such poetry in these two opposites.

To love beauty is to see light. Victor Hugo

I saw this one after the election had passed...but I love a good comment on politics in the form of artwork.

Dark, light, faded, crisp. Defined, blurry, silhouette. Still, moving, making time, keeping track, letting go. Marking day, losing time, always there and never at the same time.

A year later and the effects of the Tsunami are still being felt.

I thought this was worth sharing.
Text and images below from the Arrested Motion website.

After working on a particularly poignant mural in Washingon DC, JR has headed to the Far East to spread his Inside Out love. Going mobile with his giant photo booth in a converted truck, the French photograffeur has been traveling though Japan with his crew and local volunteers, focusing especially in areas hit by the devastating tsunami which still have not completely recovered over on year out. I have been doing some research on the people that are influencing design and architecture today, looking for the current Ray and Charles Eames of our times and want to start sharing some great design. I have been following Patricia Urquiola for awhile, she has created some of the most prolific pieces of furniture for companies like Moroso and Kartell. What I love about her work is that it appears nothing is off limits, she will take a shot at designing any object, she does not have a distinctive style and it appears that she is always exploring the boundaries of taste and function. Here are some images of her work...it's only a sliver, do a google search and you can find soooo much more.

This weekend I had the pleasure to see one of my favorite artists speak about her process at Martha Ortero Gallery in Los Angeles. Not only did she do a Q&A with her good friend Sam from Friends with you but many of her pieces were on display. I have been admiring her work for sometime online and was very excited to see them in person. I must say they were even cooler than I could even have imagined. Here are some shots from the show and Q&A.

My favorite piece from the show, about 3 feet wide, goes back in space about 4 feet deep.

Detail of the edge.

Looking deep into the wall.

This pieces is 2"x2", amazing detail at this scale.

Freestanding sculpture.

Peering into the sculpture.
