Shigeru Miyamoto Retiring

In a bit of sad news for Mario fans, Shigeru Miyamoto announced that he is retiring as the head of game design at Nintendo, though he is staying with the company to work on some smaller projects.

He will be missed.

Update: Nintendo says Miyamoto's role in the company is NOT changing.

Mario Vs PETA????

In a bit of puzzling news, PETA has attacked the game Super Mario 3D Land and its inclusion of a Tanooki suit, which they see as evidence that Mario supports the wearing of fur. They created a parody game called Super Tanooki Skin 2D in which a skinless Tanooki chases Mario. Being a family site, I decided not to link to any images from this game.

This is obviously an attention grab on PETA's part. This is especially true considering the fact that Super Mario 3D Land isn't even the first game where the Tanooki suit appears. It has been around since its debut in Super Mario Bros. 3 over 21 years ago. Where was PETA then?

New SMB Domain Names Purchased

Nintendo picked up a good lot of domain names, mostly having to do with its upcoming Wii U console, and it appears they are considering a new Super Mario project with names like:

mariobrosu.com, newsupermariobrosmii.com, newsupermariobrosu.com supermariobrosmii.com, supermariobrosu.com

We should mind you this is in no way confirmation, just showing Nintendo isn't totally looking the other way on Mario making a debut on the Wii U.

New Olympic Games Interview

The site for Official Nintendo Magazine now hosts an interview with Nobuya Ohashi, producer behind the new 2012 Olympic Games title, Wii director Eigo Kasahara and 3DS Director Kohji Shindo. Interview focuses on the differences between Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games.

Miyamoto recently revealed details on Super Mario 3D stating the game is "heavily" in development and would be on display and playable at this year's E3. The title is also a blend of Galaxy and Super Mario 64 and is currently slated for a release later this year.

Iwata officially announces Mario 3D game

Last month we told you Miyamoto had mentioned a new title was on the way to the 3DS. During his keynote at the GDC, Satoru Iwata officially confirmed 'Super Mario 3D' (working title) and displayed its first screenshots as you see. No release date was mentioned.

First 3DS System Update

Nintendo's first 3DS firmware update is an addition of the video channel. Its first video is of a live band playing Koji Kondo's theme for the original Super Mario Bros.

Nintendo revealed 'new installments' for the Mario Kart series later in the year. We could expect something by early June as stated in the PR. Here's a quote:

Guinness Names Top Video Game Characters

With over 13,000 fans voting, Guinness World Records announced the top 50 video game characters of all time as part of Gamer's Edition 2011. Topping the list at number one was Mario, #21 Yoshi, #33 Donkey Kong and #47 Bowser.

Smash Bros. Not Coming to 3DS Anytime Soon

Though neither confirmed or denied as to whether Smash Bros. 3DS will become a reality, Nintendo UK's Head of Marketing James Honeywell revealed in an interview with 3DS Buzz that such a title is not in development at this time, but calling it a possibility.

Nintendo Releasing All-Stars LE Reprints

Since its release December 12th, Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition sold out fairly quickly in stores, however Nintendo's public relations director Marc Franklin told Wired.com that the company may be reprinting the title.
